Abstract:Single crystals of Sr3Ga2Ge4O14:Cr are grown by the Czochralski method. The polarized optical absorption spectra of Cr in visible and near-infrared wavelength are presented and analysed. It is suggested that Cr enters the octahedral and tetrahedral positions as Cr3+ and Cr4+ respectively.

Abstract:The Er3+ doped transparent oxyfluoride glass ceramics containing Sr2GdF7 nanocrystals were prepared and their spectroscopic properties were discussed. The formation of Sr2GdF7 nanocrystals in the glass ceramics was confirmed by x-ray diffraction. The split peaks of the upconversion and near infrared emission bands of the Er3+ doped glass ceramics can be observed. The upconversion luminescence intensity of Er3+ in the glass ceramics increased significantly with the increasing heat treated temperature. The luminescence decay curves and time-resolved spectra indicated that the lifetime of the S-4(3/2) state of Er3+ in the glass ceramic was longer than that in the glass. Abstract:Upon 808 nm excitation, an intense broadband near-infrared emission from Cr4+ has been observed in 80GeS2-20Ga2S3 chalcogenide glass-ceramics (GCs) containing Ga2S3 nanocrystals. The emission band peaking at 1250 nm covers the O, E, S bands (1000-1500 nm). The formation of Ga2S3 nanocrystals (∼20 nm) increases the emission intensity of Cr4+ by more than three times. The quantum efficiency of the present GCs is as great as 36% at room temperature.

Abstract:The spectroscopic properties of Eu3+, Tb3+, Sm3+, Dy3+ and Er3+ ions in MgSiO3 gel and the MgSiO3 gel-derived crystals have been investigated. The main excitation band of Eu3+ ions and Tb3+ ions in the gel-derived crystal is attributed to a charge transfer transition and 4f–5d transition, respectively. The emission bands of Tb3+ ions in the gel appear at the same positions as in the gel-derived crystal and the relative intensities of the groups of bands are approximately the same. Similar to Eu3+ ions, however, the intensities of emission bands of Tb3+ ions in the gel-derived crystal are orders of magnitude greater than that in the gel since multiphonon relaxation effectively competes with radiative transitions due to the higher phonon energy in the gel. The energy level split caused by crystal field is observed clearly in the emission spectra of Eu3+ and Sm3+ ion activated gel-derived crystals. The excitation and emission spectra of Sm3+ and Dy3+ ions in the gel-derived crystal are predominantly different from that in the gel. In contrast, the excitation and emission spectra of Er3+ ions in gel-derived crystal are approximately the same as that in the gel with respect to the positions, numbers and intensities of excitation and emission bands.

Abstract:Spectroscopic properties of Tb3+, Eu3+, Er3+ and Pr3+ ions in silica glasses prepared by sol-gel techniques have been investigated. The results showed that the emission spectrum of Tb3+ consisted of transitions from the 5D4 excited level and the 5D3 excited level to the 7F manifold of the ground state. The emission bands of Eu3+, Er3+ and Pr3+ consisted of transitions from the single excited level (5D0 excited level of Eu3+, 4S32 excited level of Er3+ and 1D2 excited level of Pr3+) to the manifold of the ground state. It was also found that the emission intensities of rare earth ions in silica glasses were significantly dependent upon the energy gap between the emitting level and the next level. The relative emission intensities of rare earth ions in silica glasses followed the series Tb3+ > Eu3+ > Er3+ > Pr3+.
Unraveling Broadband Near-Infrared Luminescence in Cr3+-Doped Ca3Y2Ge3O12 Garnets: Insights from First-Principles Analysis

Abstract:In this study, we conducted an extensive investigation into broadband near-infrared luminescence of Cr3+-doped Ca3Y2Ge3O12 garnet, employing first-principles calculations within the density functional theory framework. Our initial focus involved determining the site occupancy of Cr3+ activator ions, which revealed a pronounced preference for the Y3+ sites over the Ca2+ and Ge4+ sites, as evidenced by the formation energy calculations. Subsequently, the geometric structures of the excited states 2E and 4T2, along with their optical transition energies relative to the ground state 4A2 in Ca3Y2Ge3O12:Cr3+, were successfully modeled using the ΔSCF method. Calculation convergence challenges were effectively addressed through the proposed fractional particle occupancy schemes. The constructed host-referred binding energy diagram provided a clear description of the luminescence kinetics process in the garnet, which explained the high quantum efficiency of emission. Furthermore, the accurate prediction of thermal excitation energy yielded insights into the thermal stability of the compound, as illustrated in the calculated configuration coordinate diagram. More importantly, all calculated data were consistently aligned with the experimental results. This research not only advances our understanding of the intricate interplay between geometric and electronic structures, optical properties, and thermal behavior in Cr3+-doped garnets but also lays the groundwork for future breakthroughs in the high-throughput design and optimization of luminescent performance and thermal stability in Cr3+-doped phosphors.

Abstract:Alloying β-Ga 2 O 3 with Al 2 O 3 to create (Al x Ga 1− x ) 2 O 3 enables ultra-wide bandgap materials suitable for applications deep into ultraviolet. In this work, photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Cr 3+ were investigated in monoclinic single crystal β-Ga 2 O 3 , and 10 mol. % Al 2 O 3 alloyed with β-Ga 2 O 3 , denoted β-(Al 0.1 Ga 0.9 ) 2 O 3 or AGO. Temperature-dependent PL properties were studied for Cr 3+ in AGO and β-Ga 2 O 3 from 295 to 16 K. For both materials at room temperature, the red-line emission doublet R 1 and R 2 occurs at 696 nm (1.78 eV) and 690 nm (1.80 eV), respectively, along with a broad emission band at 709 nm (1.75 eV). The linewidths for AGO are larger for all temperatures due to alloy broadening. For both materials, the R -lines blue-shift with decreasing temperature. The (lowest energy) R 1 line is dominant at low temperatures due to the thermal population of the levels. For temperatures above ∼50 K, however, the ratio of R 2 to R 1 peak areas is dominated by nonradiative combination.

Abstract:There has been a lot of interest in trivalent chromium ion-doped phosphors for near-infrared (NIR) luminescence in recent years. Here, trivalent chromium-doped NIR emitting SrGa2Si2O8 phosphors were synthesized. The electronic structure was calculated via density functional theory. Although only [SrO7], [SiO4], and [GaO4] polyhedra were found in the host, we still observe broadband luminescence of Cr3+ in the region of 650–950 nm from octahedra site. Due to the doping of Cr3+, a transformation from [GaO4] tetrahedron rearrange into [CrO6] octahedron was produced. The experimental results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of Cr3+. A systematic study of the photoluminescence properties of SrGa2Si2O8:Cr3+ was conducted. The luminescent intensity of SrGa2Si2O8:0.005Cr3+ at 420 K can be retained at 83.42% compared to 300 K, indicating its high thermal stability. The electroluminescence of the prepared light emitting diode (LED) based on SrGa2Si2O8:Cr3+ and blue LED chip was measured under various currents. The application as a NIR LED light source was demonstrated in human hands.

Abstract:A spectroscopic investigation of Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped 50SiO(2)-20Al(2)O(3)-30CaF(2) glasses and transparent glass ceramics containing CaF2 nanocrystals is presented. The formation of CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramic was confirmed by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Judd-Ofelt parameters of the Er3+ ions in the glass and glass ceramic have been calculated; they suggested that Er3+ ions had been incorporated into CaF2 nanocrystals in the glass ceramics. The upconversion luminescence intensity of the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass ceramic was much stronger than that of the Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped glass. The upconversion luminescence mechanism has been ascribed to a two-photon absorption process for the green and red luminescence and a three-photon absorption process for the blue luminescence.
First-principles calculations of structural, electronic and optical properties of ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ system

Abstract:ZnGa2O4 is an important cathodoluminescent material which exhibits good near-infrared long afterglow characteristics after being Cr-doped into Ga sites (ZGO: Cr). The band structure, crystal structure and optical properties of ZGO: Cr are investigated by using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. It is found that, in the ZGO: Cr system, due to the presence of the Cr-O bond, the distortion of the local lattice goes up as the Cr3+ doping amount increases. Meanwhile, impurity levels appear near the Fermi level of the ZGO system, and the orbital controlling the conduction band bottom gradually moves from the Ga-4s orbital to the Cr-3d orbital. Consequently, the real optical band-gap of the ZGO: Cr system becomes narrower, and the absorption edge undergoes a red-shift. The density of states of all upward and downward atomic spins is distributed asymmetrically, indicating that ZGO: Cr exhibits a certain amount of spin polarization. Additionally, the static dielectric constant of the ZGO: Cr material system increases with the increase in the Cr3+ doping amount. According to the findings, adjustments can be made of the doping concentration and energy range in the optical applications of ZGO: Cr material system.

Abstract:Garnet-type Y3Sc2Ga3O12:Cr3+ phosphor has been synthesized by a solid-state reaction. XRD result revealed the successful phase formation and Cr3+ doping in Y3Sc2Ga3O12. The excitation spectrum at about 260, 450, and 630 nm corresponded to three spin-allowed Cr3+ d-d intra-transitions of 4A2-4T1 (4P), 4A2-4T1 (4F), and 4A2-4T2 (4F), respectively, among which the near infrared (NIR) emission peak at around 740 nm is identified. Moreover, the phosphorescence emission property, thermoluminescence and related luminescence mechanisms are discussed as well. The fabricated NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) suggest its potential of Y3Sc2Ga3O12:Cr3+ phosphor for non-visible light source application.

Abstract:Demand for novel near infrared (NIR) emitting phosphors due to their potential applications in various fields led to exploring different systems for broadband NIR emission. Here, we report synthesis of novel Cr3+ activated SrGa2O4 via solid state reactions which depicted NIR in the range of 670–1100 nm with FWHM∼170 nm. The maximum NIR intensity was obtained for 5 % doping having less number of vacancy clusters. The broadband NIR emission is due to doping of Cr3+ at multiple sites in SrGa2O4, namely, two different Sr octahedra and Ga tetrahedral sites with weak crystal field splitting. The results indicate that Cr3+doping in simple hosts with multiple doping sites with weak crystal field splitting could be used to get broad NIR emission in Cr3+ doped samples. This work would help in further tuning the NIR emission with careful choice of hosts with varying doping sites and offering different crystal field strengths.

Abstract:To obtain a deeper understand of the energy transfer mechanism between Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions in the aluminum garnet hosts, (Ce, Tb, Gd)3Ga2Al3O12 (GGAG:Ce, Tb) single crystals grown by the optical floating zone (OFZ) method were investigated systematically in a wide range of Tb3+ doping concentration (1–66 at.%). Among those, crystal with 7 at.% Tb reached a single garnet phase while the crystals with other Tb3+ concentrations are mixed phases of garnet and perovskite. Obvious Ce and Ga loss can be observed by an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscope (EDS) technology. The absorption bands belonging to both Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions can be observed in all crystals. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra show the presence of an efficient energy transfer from the Tb3+ to Ce3+ and the gradually quenching effect with increasing of Tb3+ concentration. GGAG: 1% Ce3+, 7% Tb3+ crystal was found to possess the highest PL intensity under excitation of 450 nm. The maximum light yield (LY) reaches 18,941 pho/MeV. The improved luminescent and scintillation characteristics indicate that the cation engineering of Tb3+ can optimize the photoconversion performance of GGAG:Ce.

[Structure and luminescence properties of Ga2O3 : Cr3+ by Al doping]

Abstract:The Al doping gallate phosphor (Ga(1-x)Al(x))2O3 : Cr3+ (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) was synthesized by a high temperature solid-state reaction method. The X-ray diffractions show that the phase of the phosphors remains to be Ga2 O3 structure with increase in the contents of Al3+ ion. Beside, the fact that the X-ray diffraction peak shifts towards big angles with increasing Al3+ ions content shows that Al3+ ions entered the Ga2 O3 lattice. The peaks of the excitation spectra located at 258, 300, 410 and 550 nm are attributed to the band to band transition of the matrix, charge transfer band transition, and 4A2 --> 4T1 and 4A2 --> 4T2 transition of Cr3+ ions, respectively. Those excitation spectrum peak positions show different degrees of blue shift with the increase in the Al3+ ions content. The blue shift of the first two peaks are due to the band gap energy of substrate and the electronegativity between Cr3+ ions and ligands increasing, respectively. The blue shift of the energy level transition of Cr3+ ion is attributed to crystal field strength increasing. The Cr3+ ion luminescence changes from a broadband emission to a narrow-band emission with Al3+ doping, because the emission of Cr3+ ion changed from 4 T2 --> 4A2 to 2E --> 4A2 transition with the crystal field change after Al3+ ions doping. The Al3+ ions doping improved the long afterglow luminescence properties of samples, and the sample showed a longer visible near infrared when Al3+ ions content reaches 0.5. The thermoluminescence curve shows the sample with suitable trap energy level, and this is also the cause of the long afterglow luminescence materials.

Abstract:Series of Cr3+ doped Mg3Ga2GeO8 magnesium gallogermanate near-infrared (NIR) materials were synthesized by solid state method. Mg3Ga2GeO8 with a spinel solid solution structure can provide three different sites for Cr3+, and the priority of Cr3+ entering the three sites has been clearly determined by analyzing the distortions of the three polyhedral sites and local crystal field strength. The emission of the phonon vibration line from the non-forbidden transition 2E→4A2 is observed at T = 10k in sub-peak 1, however, at room temperature, the spectrum presents a broad emission band 700–1200 nm superimposed on 2E→4A2 emission. When introduced In3+ into Mg3Ga2GeO8 to substitute for Ga3+, the emission intensity can be greatly enhanced and a red shift of emission spectra is observed, which may be ascribed to the crystal field environment getting weakened with increasing In3+. A novel NIR phosphor converted light emitting diode was fabricated by combining Mg3Ga1.87In0.1GeO8:0.03Cr3+ with 455 nm blue chip, of which an optical power is 6.143 mW, a photoelectric efficiency is 8.5%, importantly, the spectrum range of device covers 650–1200 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 244 nm.

Abstract:Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a rapid, non-destructive analytical characterization tool. In this study, we report near-infrared (NIR) phosphor Ca3MgTiGe3O12:Cr3+ in garnet system, achieving ultra-broadband NIR emission. The emission spectrum of the phosphor ranges from 690 nm–1100 nm with a full width of half maximum (FWHM) value of ∼127 nm. The emission peak is observed at 786 nm when the excitation wavelength is 463 nm. The broadband emission seen in this study was identified as a result of 4T2 → 4A2 transition of Cr3+ in host lattice. The internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the material was found to be as high as 66.5 %. The energy transfer mechanism, quantum yield, thermal stability and preparation conditions of the material were further investigated. These studies show that these materials with highly-efficient ultra-brosd near-infrared emissions are promising candidates for high-quality near-infrared light sources.

Abstract:Ce3+-doped SrGa2O4 was synthesized by citrate-gel with citric acid as chelate agent and sintered in a slightly reduced atmosphere of hydrogen and nitrogen mixture. It was found that the phosphor synthesized by citrate-gel can be sintered at relatively lower temperature. The luminescent properties of Ce3+-activated SrGa2O4 and the complex Sr(Ga-Al)2O4 were studied.
