Abstract:We review the role of 5-HT systems in constructs of impulsivity and compulsivity, as well as decision-making cognition, in the context of modern reinforcement learning theory. Data from experimental animals (mice, rats, and nonhuman primates) as well as human volunteers and patients (e.g., with depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder) are reviewed in studies using multidisciplinary methods, including neuroimaging, neuropharmacology, and recent neurobiological approaches. We summarize the evidence as it stood in 2010 at the time of the first edition of the Handbook, and update it to 2018. While theoretical positions in 2010 have generally been upheld and nuanced by recent advances, several important questions still remain.
