Abstract:Microwave-driven liquefaction of bagasse was conducted in the mixture of multifunctional alcohols, and the liquefaction behavior was compared with that by conventional oil-bath heating. The residue content was used to evaluate the extent of the liquefaction, and the residues of different liquefaction processes were analyzed to characterize the liquefaction process by lignin content analysis, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The residue content was only 0.07% at 160 degrees C in 17.5 min by microwave heating while the residue content was as much as 1.231% at the same temperature in 120 min. In comparison to conventional oil-bath heating, the use of microwave offered advantages of rapid and homogeneous heating to the reaction mixture, which accelerated the liquefaction procedure and offered a relatively low liquefaction temperature to obtain same results. The hydroxyl number of liquefaction products was also measured to evaluate the reactivity of the polyol. However, the hydroxyl number of liquefaction product was 293 mg KOH/g by microwave heating lower than 651 mg KOH/g by oil bath heating.
