Abstract:The world&#8217;s agricultural and food systems vary by climate, geographic region, and local economic development conditions, but trade is making food products global in many cases, which is then followed by global interest in the efficiencies of production, water consumption, energy use, and emissions. Consumers want to know and consider in their decisions the environmental implications of the food they eat, and want to see profound reductions. Farmers and agricultural and food companies want to react positively and make changes, which is a challenge in the face of changing economic, climatic, labor, water, dietary, energy, labor, and emissions considerations and conditions.Food, energy, and water systems are individually complex and inherently interdependent. Their joint study is both a necessity and a challenge. We have developed an integrated model of food, energy, and water systems to employ all three models simultaneously to tackle complex questions that span all three systems, but also problems that one would only see once the components and parameters of the three systems are in the same framework.Our model accounts for the various inputs of agricultural production, food processing, and food distribution, from farm to consumer, including water, energy, biocides, labor, capital equipment, productivity, supply chains, transportation, retail and distribution, cooling, food processing, and food and packaging waste. The methodological basis for our model includes life-cycle assessment, life-cycle cost analysis, and a dynamic Bayesian network that allows us to propose optimal solutions in the face of changing conditions.Through case studies we show what environmental and economic costs are expected to be when evolving water treatment technologies and sources (especially wastewater recycling, stormwater capture, and desalination) and water-saving technologies are deployed in most agricultural production areas of the world to maintain production in the face of climate change and disruptions. Packaging of products holds a key to reducing the environmental impacts of fruits and vegetables. Changing the electricity and energy supply has become an economically feasible opportunity. We incorporate into our model the enormous inefficiencies food waste represents.The target audience for our model and results includes farmers and agricultural planners in the private and public sectors, individual consumers, water and wastewater agencies and companies, energy companies, food processors, and retail and distribution companies. Our model is globally applicable and scalable.

Abstract:Theoretical understanding behind the relationships among multiple ecosystem services has been the hotspot of sustainable development.In this paper,we summarize the lasted advances in modeling and analyzing the complex relationship among multiple ecosystem services,mine the questions in current researches and provide a new way based on the interdisciplinary approach.We model the interaction among multiple ecosystem services by boolean network from the genetic regulatory studies.Taking four major ecosystems services of general food production system,we establish one baseline scenario and one regulation scenario,and study the influence of the interaction among multiple ecosystem services to ecosystem functions.The result proofed that,with simple rules and data,Boolean network model could simulate nonlinear and complex relationships among multiple ecosystems services,and provide effective suggestions for ecosystem regulation.This work provides an initial validation of ability and rationality of Boolean network in modeling complex behaviors of multiple ecosystem services,and has illuminations on future studies in the field.
Modeling the integrated framework of complex water resources system considering economic development, ecological protection, and food production: A practical tool for water management

Abstract:Abstract. The rapid increase of population and urbanization is accelerating the consumption of the water resources that play an essential role in economic development, ecological protection, and food productivity (EEF). This study developed an integrated modeling framework to better identify the dynamic interaction, coevolution process, and feedback loops of the nexus across EEF systems by incorporating the multi-objective optimization and system dynamic (SD) models. The multi-objective model optimizes the water allocation decisions considering the adaptive status of both the whole system and each agent, while the SD model discloses the dynamics of the coevolution process and reciprocal feedback of the EEF system. The framework is applied to the Upper Reaches of Guijiang River Basin, China, in the context of interconnected systems considering the agents of economic development, ecological protection, and food productivity. Results show that the proposed framework enables the optimal water allocation decisions in each time step, and the SD model can adequately reveal the coevolution process and reciprocal feedback that differs in different stages in integrated, dynamic ways. The rapid economic growth intensifies the ecological awareness that cannot support such rapid development because of the conflict between environment and economic water uses. Once the economic growth rate decreased, water resources are able to support economic development because the ecological awareness is alleviated in this respect. The different water usages demonstrate the competitive mechanism, and the river ecological agent is the critical factor that affects the robustness of the model. The equal consideration of each water usage is the most beneficial to sustainable development. These results highlight the importance of water resources management considering multiple stakeholders and tradeoffs and give an insight into future dynamic changes of complex water systems.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>Irrigated agriculture is the primary user of world's fresh water resources on one hand and the producer of food to feed the world's growing population on the other hand. Water, food, and energy are intertwined in irrigated agricultural systems and an effective and coordinated management of the water-food-energy nexus is needed for the sustainable development of agriculture which is challenging because of large uncertainties involved therein. This paper developed an optimization model for the allocation of resources toward the sustainable management of agricultural water, food, and energy nexus under uncertainty. The model is capable of providing policy makers with the ability to determine optimal policy options among water, energy, and land resources to obtain the maximum system economic benefit and simultaneously minimize environmental impacts. The model is also capable of handling complex uncertainties of random boundary intervals. The model is demonstrated to solve a real-world nexus management problem in an irrigation district in northeast China. Results highlight the sensitivity of food production and environmental pollution to the utilization of water, energy, and land resources. The model is applicable for similar agriculture-centered regions with limited resources.

Abstract:Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) appeal to decision-makers to consider the impact of agriculture on different aspects, including the economic, social, ecological and environmental influences. This study establishes an integrated distributed water-food-energy management model that simultaneously considers resource-saving, economic development, ecological restoration, social security guarantee and environmental improvement to realize sustainability according to optimal resource allocation. The developed model considers the full dynamic of the water cycle, including water exchanges between river, canal, soil and aquifer. The irrigation units are regarded as decision units and hydrological response units, which are determined based on the canal distribution. A net-primary-productivity-based method is proposed for ecological and environmental benefits of agricultural production. Additionally, a comprehensive multi-objective robust programming is proposed to deal with uncertainties in both objectives and constraints, with optimality and feasibility robustness guaranteed. Taking an arid area in northwestern China as a working example, the modeling outputs offer strategies for water and energy uses under 27 risk scenarios. The feasibility robustness analysis uncovers the degree and source of risks faced by different vegetation and decision units. The optimality robustness analysis shows the influence of different uncertainties on the objectives and helps recognize sensitive objectives. These outputs can satisfy decision-makers with different risk preferences, reveal the independent and mutual effects of different uncertainties, and help recognize the key indicators of sustainable development.

Abstract:Agriculture is the largest user of freshwater which is essential for food production. Water, energy and food are closely intertwined, as both water and energy are critical inputs for food production. Increasing pressure from shortages of resources and increasing demand for food reinforce the need for optimal management of the water, energy, and food nexus. Uncertainties caused by natural conditions and human activities complicate the optimal allocation. An integrated model, called AWEFSM, was developed for the sustainable management of limited water-energy-food resource in an agricultural system by incorporating multi-objective programming, nonlinear programming, and intuitionistic fuzzy numbers into a general framework. The AWEFSM model is capable of identifying the tradeoffs of water, energy and land resources among various subareas and crops, generating high-profile and environment-friendly strategies and policies, and addressing parameter uncertainties associated with the fluctuations of natural resources and variation of socioeconomic activities. The AWEFSM model was solved, considering nonlinear membership and non-membership functions with both optimistic and pessimistic views of decision makers, and was demonstrated for a real-world case study in northwest China. The interrelationships and trade-offs among system components, including water supply-demand, energy supply-demand, land demand, food production, as well as water and energy footprints, were quantitatively analyzed under different scenarios. The AWEFSM model is applicable for similar regions dominated by agriculture with limited resource supplies to determine water-energy-food strategies under uncertainty.

Abstract:With the increasing conflict between water availability and demand on a global scale, regulating water user behavior from the bottom-up perspective has gained attention from both water managers and researchers. This paper presents an agent-based model (ABM) to simulate the farmer behavior under changing physical and institutional environments in a case study of Miyun Reservoir watershed, China. The ABM model simulates the complex adaptive systems of agricultural water users under an agricultural water-saving compensation policy. The model we developed in this study characterizes agents' sensitivity, learning capability, and information radius, which impacts agricultural income and water consumption of a household. By applying this model to a local 'paddy to dryland' subsidy policy program aiming at reshaping the agricultural water-saving behavior, the results show that this policy program reduces agricultural water consumption while also reducing household agricultural income. The policy depends on administrative intervention and financial subsidies at first to ensure compliance and gradually shape household behavior in the long run. And we also propose a suitable subsidy range of 250–350 yuan for this policy program in the long run. The model we built can help to understand agricultural water use adaptation to both anthropogenic and environmental interventions. This research also contributes to the coupled natural and human systems study with the bottom-up agent-based model, and the empirical case study provides solid policy implications for the agricultural water use allocation and adaptative management at the watershed scale.

Abstract:Confronted with diverse water management schemes, policymakers in arid basins face difficulty in choosing a particular scheme due to a lack of appropriate tools to estimate possible physical and economic outcomes in a comprehensive manner. This study develops a coupled agent-hydrologic model to both capture and provide insights into the dynamics and patterns of real-world water management using the midstream area of the Heihe River Basin in northern China as a case study. Water consumption patterns, economic efficiency, and environmental externalities of three different management schemes, namely an administered scheme (AS), a surface-water market scheme (SWMS), and a surface-water-groundwater market scheme (SGWMS) are evaluated. The results show that an agent's (irrigation district) behaviors under market schemes are determined by the difference between equilibrium price and pumping cost, related to water table depth. The annual total benefits are improved under market schemes, especially in dry years. Negative environmental effects of the market schemes do occur but are not significant. The travel time of groundwater corresponds to a delay longer than 2 months in upper agents' pumping influence on drawdown. In general, the proposed model application in this study addresses complex real-world management issues by presenting physically interpretable and verifiable outcomes, and therefore aids policymakers in decision making by providing a broader view of water management.

Abstract:Modern agriculture calls for efficient and environmental-friendly agricultural water and land management practice. Agricultural water and land utilization mode has a great impact on the amount of carbon emissions, and thus the aim of this work is to propose an optimal modeling approach for generating efficient agricultural water and land management alternatives and reducing carbon emission in agricultural water-energy-food nexus system. This study presents a novel approach consisting of carbon footprint lifecycle assessment method and bi-level multi-objective stochastic programming model. The proposed approach has contributions in following aspects: (1) the environmental impact of different resource allocation strategies can be measured in optimization (2) the spatial variability of spatial data (e.g., ET0 and precipitation); can be fully reflected via remote sensing information; (3) tradeoffs among two decision-making levels and their conflicting objectives under randomness of surface water availability can be addressed. The proposed approach was applied to the middle reaches of the Heihe River basin, northwest China. After solving the proposed model, the optimal water and land use alternatives under different hydrological years can be generated. Decision makers can plan agricultural production strategy according to optimization schemes, and reduce carbon emission through increasing vegetable cultivation and surface water utilization. Furthermore, the performance comparison of different models indicated that fierce conflicts exist between income fairness and economic benefits. The comprehensive evaluation value of bi-level multi-objective stochastic programming model is 0.7036, which is highest among single- and multi-objective models, showing that such model has obvious advantage in dealing with multiple decision-making levels and conflicting objectives. This approach can help decision makers of similar regions manage the agricultural production system in a more efficient and environment-friendly way.

Water resource systems involve multiple stakeholders and sectors, complicating the identification of dynamic feedback between agriculture and ecology. This study presents an agent-based socio-hydrological modeling (ABSHM) framework to address these interactions. New hydrological insights for the region Feedback is quantified using dynamic state variable of oasis decision-making sensitivity in the Hotan River basin. When this sensitivity ranges from 0.03 to 0.06, water managers prioritize agricultural irrigation, increasing its usage from 8 to 47 million m 3 at the expense of ecological water. Conversely, when sensitivity is from 0.015 to 0.03, ecological health requires increasing ecological water use from 27 to 66 million m3 by reducing irrigation. The ABSHM framework effectively captures these dynamic feedback processes, supporting basin water resources management and decision-making. The uniqueness of the ABSHM framework lies in its ability to capture the impact of individual decision-making behaviors on the overall water resource system. This offers new perspectives and approaches for addressing current and future water resource management challenges.

Agricultural Water Management Model Based on Grey Water Footprints under Uncertainty and Its Application

Abstract:The grey water footprint theory was introduced into a fractional programming model to alleviate non-point source pollution and increase water-use efficiency through the adjustment of crop planting structure. The interval programming method was also incorporated within the developed framework to handle parametric uncertainties. The objective function of the model was the ratio of economic benefits to grey water footprints from crop production, and the constraints contained water availability constraints, food security constraints, planting area constraints, grey water footprint constraints and non-negative constraints. The model was applied to the Hetao Irrigation District of China. It was found that, based on the data in the year of 2016, the optimal planting plans generated from the developed model would reduce 34,400 m3 of grey water footprints for every 100 million Yuan gained from crops. Under the optimal planting structure, the total grey water footprints would be reduced by 21.9 million m3, the total economic benefits from crops would be increased by 1.138 billion Yuan, and the irrigation water would be saved by 44 million m3. The optimal results could provide decision-makers with agricultural water use plans with reduced negative impacts on the environment and enhanced economic benefits from crops.

Abstract:Managing the nexus of food, energy, and water (FEW) systems is complex due to uncertainties, especially concerning climate change’s effects on resource demand. To assess these uncertainties’ impacts, we crafted optimization models treating the FEW nexus as a spatially distributed multi-agent system (MAS). Applied to a synthetic Columbia River Basin (CRB), our methodology offers guidance for CRB management. Results inform optimal energy investments, food production, and water allocation, highlighting a reversed water accessibility priority among irrigation and industrial agents. Hydropower’s relevance to policy is minimal but susceptible to climate change, affecting river inflow. Our alternate model evaluates emissions policy, suggesting current caps yield the highest marginal profit. Benchmark tests against a deterministic model reveal significantly increased regional profit potential with our proposed model.

Abstract:As the global food supply chain becomes increasingly unstable, food security is gaining importance in China. Nevertheless, factors such as water scarcity, limited land resources, and global climate change pose great challenges to increasing food production. Therefore, it is crucial to explore sustainable development models for food systems. In this paper, a multi-objective crop layout model considering crop rotation is constructed and solved using the INSGA2-DS algorithm. Various precipitation scenarios were established for climate change. Data analysis and optimization were conducted under different precipitation scenarios. Applied in the plain area of southwestern Shandong Province, the model can increase soybean yield by 6.78%, net carbon sequestration intensity by 0.04%, net benefit by 2.09%, and crop water productivity by 3.91% during a median flow year. Optimization tends to increase the total area planted with food crops during wet years and decrease it during dry years. The optimization model can enhance water productivity and carbon sequestration intensity of crops, as well as prevent unreasonable fluctuations in the area planted with food crops. This enables the benefits of water conservation and yield increase to be fully utilized, and reduces yield and economic losses due to dry years. The models help to rationally allocate soil and water resources, effectively respond to climate change risks, and provide robust decision support for regional food crop planning.

Integrated modeling of extended agro-food supply chains: A systems approach

Abstract:The current intense food production-consumption is one of the main sources of environmental pollution and contributes to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Organic farming is a potential way to reduce environmental impacts by excluding synthetic pesticides and fertilizers from the process. Despite ecological benefits, it is unlikely that conversion to organic can be financially viable for farmers, without additional support and incentives from consumers. This study models the interplay between consumer preferences and socio-environmental issues related to agriculture and food production. We operationalize the novel concept of extended agro-food supply chain and simulate adaptive behavior of farmers, food processors, retailers, and customers. Not only the operational factors (e.g., price, quantity, and lead time), but also the behavioral factors (e.g., attitude, perceived control, social norms, habits, and personal goals) of the food suppliers and consumers are considered in order to foster organic farming. We propose an integrated approach combining agent-based, discrete-event, and system dynamics modeling for a case of wine supply chain. Findings demonstrate the feasibility and superiority of the proposed model over the traditional sustainable supply chain models in incorporating the feedback between consumers and producers and analyzing management scenarios that can urge farmers to expand organic agriculture. Results further indicate that demand-side participation in transition pathways towards sustainable agriculture can become a time-consuming effort if not accompanied by the middle actors between consumers and farmers. In practice, our proposed model may serve as a decision-support tool to guide evidence-based policymaking in the food and agriculture sector.

Abstract:Water resources and food are the most important and basic resources for human beings and society. In recent decades, due to the growth of global population and economy, water resources and food shortages have become a global resource problem. In view of this, this study used the SWAT model and the spatialized food production model to quantitatively evaluate the supply, demand, and supply-demand ratio of water and food production in the Jinghe River Basin in 2020, and built a system dynamics model of the watershed ecosystem services to simulate the coupling of water and food. According to the socio-economic conditions, nine different population economic development scenarios were set up to simulate the development of the water-food relationship between the ecosystem services of the river basin in 2030. The results showed that ① the spatial differences in water supply-demand ratio and food self-sufficiency rate in Jinghe River Basin in 2020 were obvious, and the supply-demand ratio in the upper reaches of the basin was significantly higher than that in the lower reaches. ② Through model simulations of three water supply-demand ratios and three food self-sufficiency rates, it was found that the water supply-demand ratios and food self-sufficiency rates showed obvious synergistic relationships both in time and in spatial distribution. ③ Under nine economic and demographic development scenarios, the optimal simulation effect was achieved under scenario E1P3 for both water-food supply and demand in the Jinghe River Basin in 2030. That was, when the economy and population develop in opposite directions, the supply-demand ratio of the two achieved the best simulation effect. The results provided a scientific basis for the sustainable development of water-food relationship in Jinghe River Basin in the future.
