Abstract:Draft operation is a widely used in current CAD/CAD systems. In this paper we present a new draft algorithm for B-rep models, which overcomes the shortcoming in current used methods in which only small angles are allowed to keep the topological structure unchanged. In the proposed method, after generating an initial drafted body, we correct the faces of the initial drafted body and use a heuristic searching algorithm to obtain the final body. The proposed algorithm is more robust when compared to the previous methods. Finally examples are presented, showing that our method increases the capability of draft operation and can be used in a much large range of applications.

Abstract:For existing robotic assembly studies in construction, the axis-aligned bounding box algorithm used is not capable enough to provide the exact approximation of rotated and irregularly-shaped structural components' volumetric extents. This could lead to mistakenly assumed collisions. This research bridges the gap by developing a robotic approach that can mathematically derive polyhedron-bounded boxes that provide a more accurate approximation of rotated and irregularly-shaped structural components' volumetric extents for collision checks. In the approach, structural components' polyhedron meshes are represented by vertexes and normal in the algebraic format and are compared in real time to identify touching faces. Testing of the approach reveals that it has satisfactory collision avoidance performance, where its generated outputs can be used to control the joints of a robotic manipulator for detouring obstacles. The strength of our approach is in exploiting entities' polyhedral features, where the constraints for testing collisions are set with objects' exact boundaries.
Trimming self-intersections in swept volume solid modeling

Abstract:Swept volume solid modeling has been applied to many areas such as NC machining simulation and verification, robot workspace analysis, collision detection, and CAD. But self-intersections continue to be a challenging problem in the boundary representation of swept volume solids. A novel algorithm is presented in this paper to trim self-intersection regions in swept volume solids modeling. This trimming algorithm consists of two major steps: (1) roughly detecting self-intersection regions by checking intersections or overlapping of the envelop profiles; (2) splitting the whole envelop surfaces of the swept volume solid into separate non-self-intersecting patches to trim global self-intersections, and to trim local self-intersections, dividing local self-intersecting regions into patches and replacing self-intersecting patches with non-self-intersecting ones. Examples show that our algorithm is efficient and robust.

Abstract:A new algorithm is proposed to recast Boolean operations of triangulated solids as a boundary conforming tetrahedral meshing problem. Different from those existing algorithms that merely maintain a conforming surface mesh, the new algorithm maintains a boundary conforming volume mesh at the same time of computing surface intersections. This volume mesh not only provides a background structure in helping the improvement of the efficiency of intersection computations, but also enables the development of a set of efficient and reliable flood-filling type procedures to extract the Boolean outputs. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm are investigated in further details, and various techniques are suggested to tackle these two issues accordingly. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated by performing suitable test cases and the results are compared well with those data obtained by other state-of-the-art codes.

Abstract:Surface mesh generation is one time-consuming step in preparing an unstructured mesh model. However, its parallelisation attracts little attention. In this study, a fine-grained parallel surface meshing algorithm is proposed by taking advantage of the parallelism within the meshing process of a single face. Compared with the scheme which meshes the faces individually in parallel, the proposed algorithm behaves better in terms of parallel efficiency and scalability. One integral part of the proposed algorithm is a novel domain decomposition approach, which decomposes the simplified version of an input background mesh rather than the input mesh itself. The simplification procedure is based on a set of welldesigned operations on the dual graphs of the mesh. No undesirable features are formed in subdomain boundaries; hence, no postprocessing steps are required to improve the quality of elements adjacent to subdomain boundaries.

Abstract:In this paper, an algorithm for Boolean operation between sculptured models is presented and the accuracy, efficiency and robustness are the main considerations. The solid model is represented with the trimmed parametric patches and half edge data structure. Hierarchy intersection is applied for unified classification, and tracing the intersection curve to overcome degenerate cases occurring frequently in practice is also used. It can easily be extended to Boolean operations for non manifold models. The algorithm as a part of a modeling system on a SGI workstation is implemented.

Abstract:An efficient advancing front algorithm is presented to create high-quality surface elements on CAD models. Various novel schemes are developed to improve the efficiency of the algorithm while not sacrificing its robustness and the resulting mesh quality. New features include a fast projection scheme that can perform robustly in case of badly defined surfaces, a procedure that computes the ideal point by an approach that can preserve the advantageous features of both the mapping and direct methods, and an octree data structure that can speed up the local search of all existing front nodes about the ideal point. To our knowledge, the proposed algorithm is one of the fastest algorithms for surface mesh generation. On an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 machine, the sequential version of the proposed algorithm can create a quality mesh at a speed of up to 100,000 elements per second. This speed is more than 3 times higher than a state-of-the-art code can achieve. Another advantage of the proposed algorithm is its ability to maintain its high efficiency when millions or more elements are created on one single surface. In this circumstance, the efficiency of some state-of-the-arts codes slows down by one or two orders. After parallelized based on the taskflow approach, the proposed algorithm can create more than 1.6 million elements on real-world configurations in 7 s by using 6 computer cores. This speed is higher than a state-of-the-art commercial code can achieve by one order. (c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Improving the Efficiency of Solid-Based NC Simulation by Using Spatial Decomposition Methods

Abstract:Geometric accuracy is the major concern in numerically controlled (NC) milling simulation. Solid-based approach can provide more accurate geometric information, but it is of high computational cost. An efficient solid-based geometric NC simulation approach, by representing both cutter swept volume and initial or updated workpieces with triangular mesh and then performing consecutive Boolean subtractions to simulate the cutting process, is presented. The simulation efficiency is improved by applying two spatial decomposition methods including workpiece division and background grid to accelerate the spatial queries needed during the simulation process. The proposed approach was implemented, and the experimental results demonstrate that the simulation efficiency is improved significantly by applying spatial decomposition methods.

Abstract:An efficient Advancing Layer Method (ALM) is presented to create semi-structured prisms on viscous walls, in which a procedure that checks possible front intersections is essential to its efficiency. This paper develops various novel schemes to improve the algorithm’s efficiency precisely while not sacrificing its robustness and the resulting mesh quality. First, it employs a set of new techniques, and data structures are developed to improve the efficiency of the front-check procedure. Then, within each octant, a new filter is developed to reduce the intersection computations in the searching process. In addition, data structures are well designed to store the contiguously accessed data in each computing-intensive loop in a contiguous space for a potentially better cache hit ratio. We built a geometry model library formed by examples of industrial complexity to demonstrate the practicability of the algorithm. All the efforts mentioned above enable us to reduce the percentage of computing time taken by intersection check to an acceptable level (approximately 26%), which make it no longer be the most time-consuming part.
Swept volume solid modeling of revolutions on curved trajectories

Abstract:A novel algorithm based on envelop theory and B-rep modeling technique was proposed aiming at the difficulties of swept volume solid modeling for manufacturing.The algorithm was divided into four parts: analysis of trajectory curves including trajectory discretization and reference frame establishment,extraction of swept profiles including evaluation of velocity vectors on revolution generators and calculation of swept profiles at each discretized position,generation of envelop surfaces including the grouping and lofting of swept profiles,and construction of swept volume solids including the combination of swept envelop surface with the ingress and egress surfaces.Experimental results show that the presented algorithm is simpler,more efficient and accurate than other methods.

Abstract:The existence of holes in meshes makes it difficult for mesh operations, especially when comes to model rebuilding, rapid prototyping and finite element analysis. Existing hole-filling algorithms are capable of filling holes on small and smooth regions of a model. For large holes with complex boundaries or in curved region, they may not result in satisfactory results. This paper proposes an algorithm which first split the holes into flatter ones and then split the complex holes based the concept of edge expansion. It incrementally splits a complex hole into simple ones by respecting the 3D shape of its boundary and the neighboring meshes, and then fills each resulting simple hole with planar triangulation. The proposed algorithm works well for a variety of complex holes and can better preserve the detailed features of the original mesh.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel algorithm for computing the area formulation of simple irregular polygons with arc based on the requirements of the house estate management department. The algorithm proposed has two advantages over other algorithms, higher precision and more comprehensible area formulation. Distinguished from other algorithms, it is able to process the irregular polygons with arcs. This algorithm has been successfully implemented in the 'intelligent house area check and proportion CAD system', applied in the department of Haining house estate management, Zhejiang province.

Abstract:The geometry of current flower modeling method is not waterproof. We propose a method to model flowers of solid shape. Our method separates individual flower modeling and inflorescence modeling pro-cedures into structure and geometry modeling. We incorporate interactive editing gestures to allow user to edit structure parameters freely onto structure diagram. Furthermore, our method uses free-hand sketching techniques to allow users to create and edit 3D geometrical elements freely and easily. The final step is to automatically merge all independent 3D geometrical elements into a single waterproof mesh. Experiments show that this solid modeling approach is promising. Using our approach, novice users can create vivid flower models easily and freely. The generated flower model is waterproof. It can have applications in visu-alization, animation and toys and decorations if printed out on 3D rapid prototyping devices.

Abstract:High quality hex mesh can be effectively generated based on the block structure of a solid model, but the existing approaches to block decomposition of the solid model are still far from the expectation. In this paper, we propose a new method of decomposing the solid model into the block structure based on sheet operations, which can guarantee the validity of the resultant block structure. The method firstly generates an initial hex mesh of the given solid model based on its tet mesh. Then, it inserts a number of global sheets on the boundary and inside the volume respectively by sheet inflation to make the hex mesh capture the geometry of the solid model. Finally our method determines the optimal sheet set that can be extracted based on quality prediction and extracts the sheet set as a whole to get the reasonable and valid block structure of the solid model. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Robust Boolean Operation For An Uniformed Representation Of Wire-Frame, Solid And Surface Models

Abstract:To enhance the ability of current modeling system, an uniformed representation is employed to represent wire-frame, solid, surface models. We present an algorithm for Boolean operation between the models using the representation. Accuracy, efficiency and robustness are the main consideration. The geometric information is represented with trimmed parametric patches and trimmed parametric splines. The topological information is represented with an extended half-edge data structure. In the process of intersection calculation, hierarchy intersection is applied for unified classification, and tracing the intersection curve to overcome degenerate cases that occur frequently in practice. And the algorithm can be easily extended to Boolean operations for non-manifold models. The algorithm has been implemented as the modeling kernel of a feature based modeling system named GS-CAD98, which was developed on Windows/NT platform.
Efficient cutting area detection in roughing process for meshed surfaces

Abstract:Presented in this paper is an efficient cutting area detection algorithm for the layer-by-layer roughing process of the meshed surfaces in stereolithography (STL) format. The algorithm consists of three steps. Firstly, the intersecting model of a spatial triangle facet and a plane is established and formulated. Based on this, all the intersecting segments between the assigned hunting plane and the triangle meshes in the STL model are calculated. These segments are unordered initially, so in the second step, by building a special data structure, an O( n log n ) time-linking procedure is developed to link the unordered intersecting segments into several closed loops, where n is number of intersecting segments. Finally, the cutting area is identified from the obtained loops by inheritance tree analysis. The proposed algorithm has been programed and run on a personal computer. Several STL surfaces have been tested and the results show that the proposed algorithm is fast and stable.

Abstract:Due to the stratified construction of additive manufacturing (AM), the building orientation of an object greatly affects the manufacturing process and quality of the products. This article proposes an optimization algorithm for AM that comprehensively covers the three main aspects affected by the building direction: efficiency, surface quality, and internal properties. The goal of optimizing efficiency is to cut the manufacturing and postprocessing times by reducing the support volume. In terms of surface quality optimization, a new and comprehensive mathematical model is established. Considering not only the influence of the stepping effect on the whole model but also the supporting contact area, the optimization to the salient area was innovatively proposed. The salient area was defined by cone curvature, which has a significant influence on appearance. Another novel point is the quantitative optimization of the internal properties, which is based on the anisotropic characteristics of AM. The mechanical properties are taken into consideration in this article, and other anisotropic properties can be added to the optimization algorithm by using the same method. Afterward, a particle swarm optimization algorithm was adopted to synchronously optimize the targets just cited, according to the degree of importance of each factor for specific applications. The algorithm was implemented to optimize several different cases with different characteristics. Further, the results in the experiments manifested that the models printed in the optimized orientation performed better than the initial models, and the corresponding comprehensive evaluation scores were improved as well, with an optimization range of 70-90%. And the rate of optimization for support volume, surface roughness, salient area roughness, and maximum tensile strength, respectively, reached 20.9%, 57.3%, 59.5%, and 293.0%.

Abstract:To avoid the generation of low-quality elements in regions where abrupt changes of element sizes are defined, a nonlinear programming problem (NLP) is formulated to help smooth the sizing function de-fined on an unstructured background mesh, and a geometry-based adaptive tetrahedral mesh generation al-gorithm is thus set up with this novel element-sizing smoothing algorithm as one of the key ingredients. The proposed algorithm inputs a valid and closed CAD model and creates an unstructured background mesh to cover the problem domain defined by this CAD model. Then, an initial sizing function can be set up by cal-culating a sizing value at each background mesh node. Note that this size value is adapted to the curvature and proximity features of the CAD model. After that, a convex NLP is solved to smooth this sizing function such that the changes of element scales are under control. By using the smoothed sizing function to control the distributions of element scales, high-quality surface and volume meshes can finally be produced on the surface and interior of the CAD model, respectively. Numerical experiments show that, the proposed algo-rithm can be executed in a fully automatic fashion, and the user could manipulate the results of this algo- <br> rithm through five global user parameters.
Optimizing Cutting Sequences and Paths for Common-Edge Nested Parts

Abstract:Different from the normal nesting algorithm, common-edge nesting reduces the spacing between parts, improves the utilization rate of the sheet, and shortens the processing time. Although common-edge nested parts may be useful in theory, they are not practical for large-scale production due to their cutting limitations. Existing research either did not consider all common cutting constraints or used graph theory methods for global common cutting path planning. However, due to cutting thermal effects and sheet deformation, it is difficult to use global common cutting path planning in actual processing. Therefore, this paper proposes a cutting sequence optimization algorithm for common-edge nested parts that consider all cutting constraints and proposes an algorithm for generating and optimizing common cutting paths. Experiments show that the common cutting path optimization algorithm proposed in this paper can reduce about 70% of the air path compared with commercial software. Furthermore, comparison by optical microscopy shows that the quality of the actual machined part is not inferior to that of the part machined according to the cut path generated by the commercial software.
