Abstract:Convex hull (CH) is widely used in computer graphic, image processing, CAD/CAM, and pattern recognition. We investigate CH properties and derive new properties: (1) CH vertices’ coordinates monotonically increase or decrease, (2) The edge slopes monotonically decrease. Using these properties, we proposed two algorithms, i.e., CH algorithm for planar point set, and CH algorithm for two available CHs. The main ideas of the proposed algorithms are as follows. A planar point set is divided into several subsets by the extreme points, and vertices in these subsets are then separately calculated. During the computation, the CH properties are used to eliminate concave points. This can reduce the computational cost and then improves the speed. Our first algorithm can extract CH with O(nlogn) time, which is the lower bound of planar CH extraction, and the second algorithm can obtain CH with O(m+n) time at the worst case.

Abstract:The surface-based approaches modeling from silhouettes are a popular and useful topic. Intersecting operator of line segments is an essential and crucial operation in these approaches. It consists of two phases: intersecting operator in 2D and overlap testing of the set of line segments in real domain. The former has made considerable progresses while the latter remains insignificant status when there are complex objects in the scene. In order to accelerate the speed of reconstructing visual hulls, this paper addresses the problem and proposes a novel approach based on contribution weights which reflect viewing ray's contributions to the visual hulls. Experimental results demonstrate that the novel approach can attain the promise.

Abstract:The port waterway network plays an important role in the organization and management of port ship traffic. Due to limited ship operations, conflicts, congestion, and safety issues often arise in port waters. Conflicts between ships can be predicted by collision detection between ships. A novel collision detection algorithm for trajectory pairs is proposed by introducing variable time interval variables. In addition, to improve the overall accuracy of trajectory compression and reduce redundant calculation in collision detection, a multi-factor Douglas-Peucker algorithm adapted to ship trajectory compression is proposed with the consideration of speed and turn constraints. The maximum speed difference of the algorithm is increased by 1.5–2.5%, and the average speed difference increased by 2.0–4.5%. Based on the method mentioned above, the risk assessment framework of maritime collision is established and the risk situation of the waters near Ningbo Zhoushan Port is evaluated and analyzed by using ship historical track data.

Abstract:α-hulls are applied to calculate the minimum circumscribed circle(MCC) of point set and an accurate and effective method for MCC detection is established through finding the least squares circle of the point set and iteratively approaching the MCC with recursive subdivision.Several theorems concerning the properties of α-hulls are presented.If 1/α is equal to the radius of points’ MCC,all vertices of the α-hull will be on the same circle.When 1/α is larger than the MCC’s radius,the number of vertices of α-hulls will decrease with decreasing of 1/α,and the number of vertices’ number will reach zero when 1/α is smaller than MCC’s radius.From the above rules,an algorithm for detecting MCC is developed,and experimental results show this algorithm is reliable.

Abstract:To find a convex hull for n points in d-dimensional space, the optimal algorithm has time complexity O(n(right) (perpendicular d/2 left perpendicular)). When n and d are large, the execution time is very long. In this paper, we propose an approximate algorithm for computing multidimensional convex hulls. This algorithm finds quasi-two-side approximation to the hull to reduce the time for computing the exact hull boundary. To yield an epsilon-approximate convex hull, it has time complexity O(epsilon(-1/(d-1))n) and storage complexity O(epsilon(-1(d-1))). The approximate algorithm has several advantages: (1) it can easily be implemented, (2) it is suitable for parallel implementation, (3) it is much faster than the exact algorithm, (4) the user can choose to get more accurate results using longer computation time, and (5) it can be applied to solve many problems related to convex hull computation. Abstract:This study examines various algorithms for computing the convex hull of a set of n points in a d-dimensional space. Convex hulls are fundamental in computational geometry and are applied in computer graphics, pattern recognition, and computational biology. Such convex hulls can also be useful in symmetry problems. For instance, when points are arranged symmetrically, the convex hull is also likely to be symmetrically shaped, which can be useful for object recognition in computer vision or pattern recognition. The focus is primarily on two-dimensional algorithms, including well-known methods like Gift Wrapping, Graham Scan, Divide and Conquer, QuickHull, TORCH, Kirkpatrick–Sediel, and Chan's algorithms. These algorithms vary in terms of time complexity and scalability to higher dimensions. This study is extended to three-dimensional convex hull algorithms, such as NAW, randomized insertion, and parallelized versions, such as CudaHull and CudaChain. This study aimed to elucidate the operational principles, step-by-step procedures, and comparative time complexities of each algorithm. The implementation in Python facilitates a detailed comparison of the algorithmic performance through stepwise analysis and graphical outputs. The ultimate goal is to provide insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each algorithm under various scenarios, thereby offering a comprehensive guide for practical implementation.

Abstract:The steady development of motor vehicle technology will enable cars of the near future to assume an ever increasing role in the decision making and control of the vehicle itself. In the foreseeable future, cars will have the ability to communicate with one another in order to better coordinate their motion. This motivates a number of interesting algorithmic problems. One of the most challenging aspects of traffic coordination involves traffic intersections. In this paper we consider two formulations of a simple and fundamental geometric optimization problem involving coordinating the motion of vehicles through an intersection. We are given a set of $n$ vehicles in the plane, each modeled as a unit length line segment that moves monotonically, either horizontally or vertically, subject to a maximum speed limit. Each vehicle is described by a start and goal position and a start time and deadline. The question is whether, subject to the speed limit, there exists a collision-free motion plan so that each vehicle travels from its start position to its goal position prior to its deadline. We present three results. We begin by showing that this problem is NP-complete with a reduction from 3-SAT. Second, we consider a constrained version in which cars traveling horizontally can alter their speeds while cars traveling vertically cannot. We present a simple algorithm that solves this problem in $O(n \log n)$ time. Finally, we provide a solution to the discrete version of the problem and prove its asymptotic optimality in terms of the maximum delay of a vehicle.

Optimal Point Movement for Covering Circular Regions

Abstract:Given $n$ points in a circular region $C$ in the plane, we study the problems of moving the $n$ points to its boundary to form a regular $n$-gon such that the maximum (min-max) or the sum (min-sum) of the Euclidean distances traveled by the points is minimized. The problems have applications, e.g., in mobile sensor barrier coverage of wireless sensor networks. The min-max problem further has two versions: the decision version and optimization version. For the min-max problem, we present an $O(n\log^2 n)$ time algorithm for the decision version and an $O(n\log^3 n)$ time algorithm for the optimization version. The previously best algorithms for the two problem versions take $O(n^{3.5})$ time and $O(n^{3.5}\log n)$ time, respectively. For the min-sum problem, we show that a special case with all points initially lying on the boundary of the circular region can be solved in $O(n^2)$ time, improving a previous $O(n^4)$ time solution. For the general min-sum problem, we present a 3-approximation $O(n^2)$ time algorithm, improving the previous $(1+\pi)$-approximation $O(n^2)$ time algorithm. A by-product of our techniques is an algorithm for dynamically maintaining the maximum matching of a circular convex bipartite graph; our algorithm can handle each vertex insertion or deletion on the graph in $O(\log^2 n)$ time. This result is interesting in its own right.

Abstract:In this paper the problem of maximizing the distance to a given fixed point over an intersection of balls is considered. It is known that this problem is NP complete in the general case, since any subset sum problem can be solved upon solving a maximization of the distance over an intersection of balls to a point inside the convex hull. The general context is: in [1] it is shown that exists a polynomial algorithm which always solves the maximization problem if the given point is outside the convex hull of the centers of the balls. Naturally one asks if there is a polynomial algorithm which solves the problem for a point inside the convex hull. A conjecture stated in a previous paper, [1] is proved, under slightly stronger conditions. The proven conjecture allows a polynomial algorithm for points on the facets of the convex hull and shows that such points share the maximizer with all the points in a small enough ball centered at it, thus including points in the interior of the convex hull of the ball centers.

Abstract:How to obtain intersection of curves and surfaces is a fundamental problem in many areas such as computer graphics, CAD/CAM, computer animation, and robotics. Especially, how to deal with singular cases, such as tangency or superposition, is a key problem in obtaining intersection results. A method for solving the intersection problem based on the coordinate transformation is presented. With the Lagrange multiplier method, the minimum distance between the center of a circle and a quadric surface is given as well. Experience shows that the coordinate transformation could significantly simplify the method for calculating intersection results. The location of the tangent point is revised according to the tangency condition. It can improve the stability of the intersection of given curves and surfaces in singularity cases. The new algorithm is applied in a three dimensional CAD software (GEMS), produced by Tsinghua University.

Abstract:We consider the problem of untangling a given (non-planar) straight-line circular drawing δG of an outerplanar graph G=(V,E) into a planar straight-line circular drawing of G by shifting a minimum number of vertices to a new position on the circle. For an outerplanar graph G , it is obvious that such a crossing-free circular drawing always exists and we define the circular shifting number shift∘(δG) as the minimum number of vertices that are required to be shifted in order to resolve all crossings of δG . We show that the problem Circular Untangling , asking whether shift∘(δG)≤K for a given integer K , is NP -complete. For n -vertex outerplanar graphs, we obtain a tight upper bound of shift∘(δG)≤n−⌊n−2⌋−2 . Moreover, we study the Circular Untangling for almost-planar circular drawings, in which a single edge is involved in all of the crossings. For this problem, we provide a tight upper bound shift∘(δG)≤⌊n2⌋−1 and present an O(n2) -time algorithm to compute the circular shifting number of almost-planar drawings.
A Near-Quadratic Algorithm for the Alpha-Connected Two-Center Problem

Abstract:Given a set S of n points in the plane and a constant alpha, the alpha-connected two-center problem is to find two congruent closed disks of the smallest radius covering S, such that the distance of the two centers is at most 2(1 - alpha)r. We present an O(n(2)log(2)n) expected-time algorithm for this problem, improving substantially the previous O(n(5))-time solution. The algorithm translates the alpha-connected two-center problem into a distance problem between two circular hulls.

Abstract:Conventional methods for solving intersections between two offset parametric surfaces often include iteratively using computationally expensive SSI (surface/surface intersections) algorithm. In addition, these methods ignore the relations between the intersection curves of parametric surfaces with different offset distances. The algorithm presented in this paper, makes full use of the topological relations between different intersection loops and calculates intersection loops with the help of previously calculated intersection loops. It first pre-processes two parametric surfaces to obtain the characteristic points, called topology transition points (TTPs), which can help in the subsequent finding of the topologies of the intersection curves. Then these points are categorized into several distinct groups, and we can determine the calculation strategy for searching initial points by analyzing the properties of these TTPs on the surfaces. Hence, all intersection curves can be marched from initial points by the tracing algorithm. The proposed algorithm could calculate intersection curves robustly and effectively, and has been tested to be capable of overcoming the degenerate conditions such as loop and singularities leaking that occur frequently in conventional algorithms.

Abstract:Computing minimum distance between two objects is very important in a lot of areas such as CAD/CAM computer graphics and collision detection. In 2002, computing minimum distance between two ellipsoid was reduced into the problem of solving two bivariate polynomial equations with degrees at most 12 by Lennerz and those of degrees 8 and 16 by Sohn et al. In this paper, it is converted into the problem of solving two triple polynomial equations with degrees no larger than 2 and 9. This result is obtained by using the offset surface and the Lagrange techniques. One of the two points where the minimum distance occurs is obtained by tracing the above two equations. The minimum distance is then a root of a quadratic equation, and the other point could be calculated by an explicit formula.
Constant Workspace Algorithms for Computing Relative Hulls in the Plane

Abstract:The constant workspace algorithms use a constant number of words in addition to the read-only input to the algorithm stored in an array. In this paper, we devise algorithms to efficiently compute relative hulls in the plane using a constant workspace. Specifically, we devise algorithms for the following three problems: \newline (i) Given two simple polygons $P$ and $Q$ with $P \subseteq Q$, compute a simple polygon $P'$ with a perimeter of minimum length such that $P \subseteq P' \subseteq Q$. \newline (ii) Given two simple polygons $P$ and $Q$ such that $Q$ does not intersect the interior of $P$ but it does intersects with the interior of the convex hull of $P$, compute a weakly simple polygon $P'$ contained in the convex hull of $P$ such that the perimeter of $P'$ is of minimum length. \newline (iii) Given a set $S$ of points located in a simple polygon $P$, compute a weakly simple polygon $P' \subseteq P$ with a perimeter of minimum length such that $P'$ contains all the points in $S$. \newline To our knowledge, no prior works devised algorithms to compute relative hulls using a constant workspace and this work is the first such attempt.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that planar rectification can be achieved by simply solving the intersection of two circles on a plane. The resulting closed form solution gives the images of the 'circular points' on the image plane and eliminates the troublesome step of vanishing line detection that presents in many previous solutions to the planar rectification problem. Specifically, we formulate the problem as solving a set of quadratic equations with two variables and propose an efficient algorithm to convert them into a standard real coefficient quartic equation for which a closed form solution is obtained. The experimental results confirm the advantages of the method.

Abstract:A highway H is a line in the plane on which one can travel at a greater speed than in the remaining plane. One can choose to enter and exit H at any point. The highway time distance between a pair of points is the minimum time required to move from one point to the other, with optional use of H. The highway hull HH(S,H) of a point set S is the minimal set containing S as well as the shortest paths between all pairs of points in HH(S,H), using the highway time distance. We provide a Theta(n log n) worst-case time algorithm to find the highway hull under the L_1 metric, as well as an O(n log^2 n) time algorithm for the L_2 metric which improves the best known result of O(n^2). We also define and construct the useful region of the plane: the region that a highway must intersect in order that the shortest path between at least one pair of points uses the highway.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate how to topologically and geometrically characterize the intersection relations between a movable convex polygon A and a set /spl Xi/ of possibly overlapping polygons fixed in the plane. More specifically, a subset /spl Phi//spl sube//spl Xi/ is called an intersection relation if there exists a placement of A that intersects, and only intersects, /spl Phi/. The objective of this paper is to design an efficient algorithm that finds a finite and discrete representation of all of the intersection relations between A and /spl Xi/. Past related research only focuses on the complexity of the free space of the configuration space between A and /spl Xi/ and how to move or place an object in this free space. However, there are many applications that require the knowledge of not only the free space, but also the intersection relations. Examples are presented to demonstrate the rich applications of the formulated problem on intersection relations.

Abstract:Given in the plane a set of points and a set of halfplanes, we consider the problem of computing a smallest subset of halfplanes whose union covers all points. In this paper, we present an $O(n^{4/3}\log^{5/3}n\log^{O(1)}\log n)$-time algorithm for the problem, where $n$ is the total number of all points and halfplanes. This improves the previously best algorithm of $n^{10/3}2^{O(\log^*n)}$ time by roughly a quadratic factor. For the special case where all halfplanes are lower ones, our algorithm runs in $O(n\log n)$ time, which improves the previously best algorithm of $n^{4/3}2^{O(\log^*n)}$ time and matches an $\Omega(n\log n)$ lower bound. Further, our techniques can be extended to solve a star-shaped polygon coverage problem in $O(n\log n)$ time, which in turn leads to an $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm for computing an instance-optimal $\epsilon$-kernel of a set of $n$ points in the plane. Agarwal and Har-Peled presented an $O(nk\log n)$-time algorithm for this problem in SoCG 2023, where $k$ is the size of the $\epsilon$-kernel; they also raised an open question whether the problem can be solved in $O(n\log n)$ time. Our result thus answers the open question affirmatively.
