Abstract:Museums have been widely considered as informal educational sites. Studies about families in museums heavily concentrate on the cognitive aspects and the learning outcomes in science museums and art galleries. Compared with previous research, this study emphasizes four distinctive themes: a focus on the pre-trip stage of the museum visit, museums depicting local heritage, a Chinese context, and attention to social and cultural issues. In detail, this study explores the motivations of Chinese parents who take their children to a cluster of heritage museums at the southern end of China's Grand Canal, a newly designated world heritage site in Hangzhou. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with parents visiting the museums with their children. It was found that the key push factors include education and learning, relaxation, creating positive experience for children, relationship enhancement (quality time with children) and extended family obligations. Free admission, the innovative displays, the opportunities for personal interaction and the quality of the environment both within and surrounding the museums were important pull factors. The family market, particularly the extended family, may be particularly important in China given their importance in Chinese culture based on Confucian teaching.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to summarize the conditions under which participatory art museums and local commercial traditions can have positive and sustained interactions. Design/methodology/approach The methods include studying the quantity and content of exhibitions in the four cities of the Bay Area, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Shunde, to compare their academic positioning and influence on local commercial production. Through interviewing curators, artists and university scholars who are active in the Bay Area and are invited by the museums on a regular basis, it will let us understand the attitudes from the government, public and capital towards the regional art museums and how these attitudes influence the choice of theme in the participatory art museum practice. Findings To summarize the findings, the author concludes that a participatory art gallery with commercial production in the Bay Area requires the following: a long tradition of local business and wealth accumulation; a local area is of a size where the community of acquaintances can interact on a regular basis; continued interest of a diverse local elite, including a mix of businessmen and gentry, government officials and various sectors of the public; and museums serving as intermediaries to coordinate the effective integration of the commercial and traditional resources. Originality/value Participatory approaches and their impacts are a shared area of interest across urban planning, heritage studies and the creative arts. Crucially, solely relying on either the Latin bottom-up community-oriented approach (Barnes, 2003) or the British top-down policy-oriented approach (Heijnen, 2010) did not maximize benefits, though these distinctive two approaches were convinced that museums should play a larger role in becoming agents of contemporary social change. By contrast, in focusing on Chinese Art Museums, this study will explore participatory practice in the Asian context. In doing so, it will not only diversify the emerging literature on the social and economic impacts of arts and heritage organizations but also challenge the Western lens through which participatory approaches are viewed in the interdisciplinary literature. As Lefebvre acknowledged his lack of non-Western regions in his research, this study will offer new perspectives on museology and its contributions to the Production of Space.

Abstract:Family visitors are important audiences for museums. This paper develops a model that examines the influence of Chinese family visitors' leisure experiences in museums on their behavioural intentions (BI) with their perceived benefits (mindful benefits and non-mindful benefits, MB and NMB) as the mediating variables. Based on the theoretical framework of an interactive experience model, parents' experiences in museums were divided into experience of existential authenticity (interaction with the exhibits) (EA) and experience of parents-children interaction (PCI). A total of 375 local family visitors at a cluster of craft museums in Hangzhou, China participated in the survey. The PLS-SEM analysis indicates that both EA and PCI have positive effects on perceived benefits. EA, which emphasises the personal interactions between visitors and exhibited objects as well as their intangible meanings, is found to be more powerful than PCI in shaping visitors' BI. MB and NMB differ in their influence on visitors' behaviours. Only MB is linked with visitors' BI. Further, MB partially mediates the relationship between EA and BI, and fully mediates the relationship between PCI and BI. Implications are offered to enhance family visitors' experiences through appropriate service management strategies.
Benefits of Visiting Heritage Museums: Chinese Parents’ Perspectives

Abstract:The family, as a leisure unit, is an important museum consumer group. The literature on family leisure in museums concentrates on the cognitive and the learning aspects in science museums and art galleries in western contexts. It provides limited explanation of the leisure outcomes acquired from visiting museums. This work addresses this lacuna by exploring the benefits perceived by Chinese parents who take their children to a cluster of museums along China's Grand Canal, a world heritage site in Hangzhou. A review of museum and heritage research, combined with 17 on-site, in-depth interviews, generated information on a range of benefits which was used to design a questionnaire that was completed by 450 respondents. Five perceived benefits were identified using factor analysis. In order of significance, they are family bonding, community attachment, cultural awareness, restoration and personal growth. These perceived benefits have implications for museums and other public facilities catering to the family leisure market, as well as for governments, community organisations, the heritage sector and other stakeholders that are charged with managing cultural heritage.

Abstract:Purpose China has been going through a "museum boom" paralleling the domestic tourism boom since 2000; such growth changed the cultural landscape; museums became a vital characteristic of some Chinese cities for both residents and tourists. Encouraged by this growth, the more ambitious "All-for-one Museum (全域博物馆)" was proposed. The physical boundary between museums and living spaces is infinite ambiguity, challenging the idea of museums as "heterotopias." This study aims to explore the musealization of urban spaces in the context of anthropology and museology, scrutinizing the cultural-political intentions and meanings of these developments, and seeks to ignite further investigation into the reconstruction of historical imaginaries for tourists and urban populations across related disciplines. Design/methodology/approach This paper examines two cases in Chinese metropolises, Beijing and Shanghai, to illustrate this development of musealization, that is, how the cities actively leverage museological values and methods to connect with their past. In the Beijing case, the authors explore how the local government is leading the effort to musealize the city; in the Shanghai case, they will see how tourists, especially dweller-tourists, navigate through a curated past story in the city and connect their own experience, memory and identity with the place. Findings The all-for-one museum creates a museal layer projected onto the bigger urban space, even though the authenticity of the "past" is challenged by the modernization development of the city. The authors also find out that for some tourists (especially dweller-tourists), an existential sense of authenticity plays a more significant role as they not only seek to sightsee the past of the city but also to take part in its creation. Originality/value This paper discusses two kinds of musealization in cosmopolitan cities of Beijing and Shanghai: top-down and bottom-up. It approaches questions about the musealization of urban spaces from the perspectives of anthropology and museology, and discusses musealization in the specific historical context of China's modernization process.

Abstract:Museums have grown exponentially in China in the span of approximately 110 years. How does one design an exhibit for a better-informed public? What kind of interpretive space is needed to engage the public? How do museums function as sites of public history? This article traces the genealogy of museum development in China, and argues that the birth of the modern museum in China is a product of the radicalism of the late nineteenth and the early twentieth centuries. Embedded in the subsequent one hundred years of development are a changing definition of "public," a remodeled idea of "history," and an evolving relationship between museums and their public. Within this context, the "Museums and the Public: Urban Landscape and Memory" project explores how the public interprets history and landscapes through exhibits, and if or how the exhibits reflect their memories. The analysis raises three possibilities for museums in China.
Crafting Collaboration: Conflict Resolution and Community Engagement in the Hangzhou Arts and Crafts Museum Cluster

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the complex nature of participation, collaboration and conflict between craftspeople and museum professionals in the context of museums engaging with craftsmanship. Multiple research methods (direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation) were employed, focusing on the case of the Arts and Crafts Museum Cluster (ACMC) in Hangzhou, China. The findings suggest that the initial participation and continuing collaboration of the craftspeople was motivated by their receiving a sustainable income, spiritual satisfaction, and social awareness and recognition. The museum professionals were rather more market-oriented, seeking to satisfy visitors' needs and interests. The different interests of the two parties in terms of participation and collaboration resulted in several conflicts, which were resolved by a combination of negotiation and compromise between the craftspeople and the museum professionals. Through re-examining the community participation approach in the intangible heritage practice of contemporary Chinese museums, this research highlights the importance of active participation and collaboration between the two parties through the continuing process of negotiation and compromise.

Abstract:Nowadays, some museums adopt the user-centered design approach which entails focusing on audience, identifying a need through visitor research. But still many museums fail to do so. By interviewing on-the-spot in museums and visitor-oriented questionnaire survey, this research focus on the basic food and beverage demand of visitors inside museums, and a series of problems are revealed and discussed. To enhance the visitor experience, it is suggested from the perspective of participation ecology, value co-creation and open innovation in the museum context, the museums should employ more theme-designed restaurants, carry out more entertainment and activities, increase the quality and quantity of food choices etc.

Abstract:"Maintaining its relevance to contemporary society" should be the essential of museum de-velopment.Only with relevance,museum practices such as exhibitions and education are able to foster sym-pathy, making the audience touched and remembering, and ultimately to arouse their empathy, encouraging their thinking and behavior change.This is an inter-related and progressive process in order to reach the au-dience and form a virtuous circle. The museum should take current social development into consideration when building its exhibition narrations and performing educational roles, evoke the audience's emotions, and foster sympathy as well as empathy. Only in this way can the story of the present be truly told and the museum be truly relevant to audience.

Abstract:The construction of ecological museums under the guidance of the new museum theory has been widely used in the protection and utilization of traditional villages, historical blocks, industrial heritage, etc., in China. The concept of new museum science has become a new practice and thinking in building eco-cultural towns and eco-cultural communities (Pan, 2018). The construction concept of the Ecological Museum of Yim Tin Tsai Village Village in Hong Kong is a theoretical attempt to study and solve the long-term development of Yim Tin Tsai Village. This article mainly demonstrates the community mass active participation mode that Yim Tin Tsai Village faces in the construction of the ecological museum. Through data analysis, examples and other methods, and by desktop deduction and research, we will carry out practical analysis to improve the active participation of community people in community management mode and plan to realize the role of community people in actively participating in the construction and management of ecological museums, realize the new idea of overall ecological conservation, and let local people's participation and community governance interact and work together. At the same time, most of the current domestic research on community creation is focused on mainland villages, and few researchers have focused on villages in Hong Kong. Yim Tin Tsai Village in Hong Kong as an excellent representative of new rural tourism development has formed a relatively mature model of community participation in the construction of the eco-museum, and the need for research has thus emerged.

Abstract:The issue of sustainability has emerged as a focal point within the museum sector. This article aims to investigate the perceptions and attitudes of Chinese general visitors towards museums and sustainability. To achieve this, we employed a visitor evaluation approach, with inhabitants of the Chinese mainland serving as the target population. We conducted a survey using an online questionnaire, yielding a total of 1260 valid samples. The study finds that most museum visitors in mainland China see a strong link between museums and sustainable development, with factors like age, gender, education, familiarity with sustainable development, and museum interaction shaping these perceptions. The results indicate that large segments of the Chinese visitors hold a favourable perception of the significance of museums in terms of environmental, social, economic, and cultural sustainability. However, the visitor generally does not wish to sacrifice their own visiting experience to enhance museums' sustainable development capacities. The article examines the relationship between museums and sustainability and offers recommendations for museum practice and policymaking in China and beyond.

Abstract:What does the age of participation look like from the perspective of a museum visitor? Arguably, the concept of participative experiences is already so deeply ingrained in our culture that we may not even think about it as participation. Museum visitors engage in a number of activities, of which observing the exhibits is only one part. Since most visitors come to the museum together with someone else, they spend time and attention on the people they came with, and often the needs of the group are given priority over individual preferences. How can museums tap into these activities - and make themselves relevant to visitors? In this chapter we will try to approach this constructively, as a design opportunity. Could it be productive for the museum to consider itself not only as a disseminator of knowledge, but also as the facilitator of participative activities between visitors? In what follows, we will outline a range of practical design projects that serve as examples of this approach. These projects were part of the European Union funded Horizon2020 project GIFT, a cross-disciplinary collaboration between researchers, artists, designers and many international museums and heritage organisations, exploring the concept of interpersonal museum experiences (see https://gifting.digital/). What the projects have in common is that they build on visitors co-creating and sharing their own narratives in the museum context. We suggest that these projects demonstrate a spectrum of possibilities: From experiences that take place almost without any museum involvement, to those that give museums a role in curating these narratives.

Abstract:As a new way to preserve cultural heritages,Ecological Museum emerged in late 20th-century Europe and was introduced to China with the name of Ethnic Ecological Museums to protect the traditional culture of ethnic minorities in Guizhou,Yunnan and Guangxi at the end of last century.Jinuo Ethnic Ecological Museum(hereinafter referred to as Jinuo Museum)at Baka Village of Xishuangbanna,Yunnan,is a typical case in this field.With a running start,Jinuo Museum,however,many problems exist in its practice,and it has now retreated to decadency and lost its function of preserving traditional heritages.Based on the analysis of its development course,the paper is to present that the neglect for residents' benefits and interests,which has dampened their enthusiasm to participate in the development of Jinuo Museum and tourism,has caused the state of Jinuo Museum.Ethnic Ecological Museums,in which the fusion of cultures,producers and owners is emphasized,is totally different from previous preservation.Through the development of community tourism to protect and expend cultures,Ethnic Ecological Museums will achieve sustainable development of tourism in these ethnic minority communities.

Abstract:The museum in the digital age is not only a storyteller telling a fixed story to visitors through curatorial design, but a story co-maker in collaboration with visitors' experience in the space. Building on the understanding that the co-production of stories lies in the interrelationship between museum visitors, museum space, and digital storytelling, this research is interested in the construction of affective stories, specifically the question of how the affective environment for such storytelling is understood and formed. By examining the Palace Museum, the heritage museum located on the heritage site of the Forbidden City, Beijing, we consider how the heritage space becomes a performative event, and how the virtual space acts as an extension of the physical site. We explore the quality of this heritage museum experience, which has implications for how heritage museums can harness and make practical use of the affective interrelationship within the designed museum space.

Abstract:The transition from a centrally planned economy to a market economy with socialist characteristics has had a profound effect on China's cultural industries. This paper adopts a case study approach to illustrate the challenges that have shaped the administration of public museums as a consequence of China's economic reforms. By drawing upon an example of cross-cultural collaboration between Western cultural institutions and China's Nanjing Museum (南京博物院: nanjing bowuyuan), we uncover the tensions that exist between China's cultural policy preferences and the encroaching values of the market economy. In doing so, this article contributes towards a richer exposition of the local practices guiding cultural management, reflecting the broader challenges endemic among China's cultural industries. Primarily, we seek to illustrate how market imperatives have influenced local practices, creating a context unique to China that deviates from the central tenets of neoliberal development and market management.

Abstract:This paper investigates the role of cultural amateur clubs of residents' community in the traditional neighborhood, and focuses on involving design in community activities to explore the new opportunities and possibilities of community regeneration. With the development of urbanization in China, traditional communities' environment has changed a lot. The mixture of new and old buildings not only broke the traditional residential environment integrity, but also changed the neighborhood relationship in communities. Under the macro-context of social background, understanding the existing problems and situation that residents who live in the modern communities may face when participating in daily cultural activities in the public space, has great practical significance in improving interpersonal relationship's situation, further promoting the development of the social harmonious. Using the Living Lab participatory design method and ethnographic study, we visited and interviewed the residents who live in Qinglong Hutong, Dongcheng District, Beijing, China. First of all, we describe the background, purpose and methods of this research, and then study the current situation of how the residents in Qinglong Community participate in the daily cultural activities. By identifying the persona, sampling investigating and researching on the residents, we create the model on social interaction and network establishment of the amateur cultural activities in the community. The final outcomes of this paper include participatory workshops on Beijing Opera, the applet based on the WeChat, and initiative on cultural regeneration during the Beijing Design Week. The model and sustainable mechanism developed in this paper will be used to support the further community regeneration project.
