Abstract:The thermal decomposition of methano-fullerene derivatives such as ethoxycarbonyl methano[60] fullerene and various isomers of bis-(ethoxycarbonyl methano)[60] fullerene leads to new fullerene derivatives, which have been preliminary characterized. The analysis of separated species was performed by UV-VIS, IR, H- and C-NMR, STM, FAB, LDI and MALDI-TOF MS spectroscopy. One of the isolated phases is a C 122 molecule with a dumbbell-like structure.

Abstract:Open-cage fullerene derivative 2, C-59(O)(4)(NAr)(2) (Ar = p-tBuC(6)H(4)), was prepared from 1, C-60(O)(4)(OH)(2)(NAr)(2), through processes involving decarbonylation and elimination of the two hydroxyl groups. The phenyl groups in compound 2 act as chelating ligands for the fullerene cage and induce partial dimerization of 2 in solution. The single crystal X-ray structure of 2 shows strong intradimer pi-pi interactions and also weaker interdimer CH-pi and pi-pi interactions.

Abstract:Fullerene skeleton modification has been investigated through selective cleavage of the fullerene carbon-carbon bonds under mild conditions. Several cage-opened fullerene derivatives including three [59]fullerenones with an 18-membered-ring orifice and one [59]fullerenone with a 19-membered-ring orifice have been prepared starting from the fullerene mixed peroxide 1, C60(OOtBu)6. The prepositioned tert-butyl peroxy groups in 1 serve as excellent oxygen sources for formation of hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. The cage-opening reactions were initiated by photoinduced homolysis of the tBu-O bond, followed by sequential ring expansion steps. A key step of the ring expansion reactions is the oxidation of adjacent fullerene hydroxyl and amino groups by diacetoxyliodobenzene (DIB). Aminolysis of a cage-opened fullerene derivative containing an anhydride moiety resulted in multiple bond cleavage in one step. A domino mechanism was proposed for this reaction. Decarboxylation led to elimination of one carbon atom from the C60 cage and formation of [59]fullerenones. The cage-opened [59]fullerenones were found to encapsulate water under mild conditions. All compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data. Single-crystal structures were also obtained for five skeleton-modified derivatives including two water-encapsulated fulleroids.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene mixed peroxide C(60) (OH)(Cl)(OOtBu) reacts with PhMe(2)SiH/B(C(6)F(5))(3) to give oxahomofullerene. Mechanistic investigation indicates that the hydroxyl group in the central pentagon ring is essential to convert the tert-butylperoxo group into a ketal moiety. Migration of the silyl group and transformation of the siloxy group into a phenyl group are observed in the deprotection of the fullerene bound siloxy group. A 12-membered open-cage fullerendione was obtained through oxidation of a [6,6]-fullerendiol. This orifice could be closed to form ketal/hemiketal moieties by BF(3)-catalyzed reaction with methanol. All of the new fullerene derivatives were characterized by spectroscopic data, and structure of the open-cage fullerendione was also confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.

Abstract:The formation of all-carbon [60]fullerene derivatives was observed in the course of the thermolysis of methano-fullerene derivatives. IR, UV-Vis, GPC, C-13-NMR, TG-MS, TOF-MS and STM data are consistent with the formation of all-carbon [60]fullerene oligomers without a direct connection between fullerene cages but through one or two carbon atoms as bridges. Molecular masses up to 8000 amu have been detected by mass spectroscopy.

Abstract:The electrochemical properties of the carbon-bridged fullerene dimers C-121(I), C-121(II), C-121(III), C-131, and C-141 were characterized systematically for the first time in this study. Cyclic voltammogram and differential pulse voltammogram analyses revealed that they first underwent three reversible fullerene-unit-based reduction processes where each of the two carbon cages accepted one electron in each step and then possessed a different deep reduction sequence from the fourth to sixth reduction potentials of the fullerene cages. The electronic interactions between cages in the atom-bridged dimers (e.g., C-60-C-C-60) were found to be different from those of dimers in which two cages were connected directly. Comparison studies of the redox properties of the five dimers revealed that the C-60 dimerization via [5.6]-[6.6] connection influenced the cage electron acceptability much more than that of [5.6]-[5.6] or [6.6]-[6.6] connections And the dimerization with C-70 cages influenced the reduction potentials of dimerized products more potently than that with C-60 cages. Further results from controlled potential electrolysis, high-performance liquid chromatography, matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, ultraviolet absorption spectral analyses demonstrated the reduction processes and a dissociation of the dimers based on reductions. The theoretical understanding of the experiments was investigated by using time-dependent density functional calculations for the ionic states Of C-121(I, II, III)(n-) with n = 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Abstract:C(60)(OH)(8) is a fullerenol with all the hydroxyl groups located in the same hemisphere. It combines the fascinating assembly behaviour of a Janus particle and the unique properties of a fullerene. Since the range of interparticle hydrophobic attraction in water is much longer than the particle size, C(60)(OH)(8) has a strong tendency to form aggregates. At concentrations above 1.0 x 10(-6) M, the R(g) of the aggregate is 110 nm and the aggregation number reaches 2.5 x 10(5). However, the conformation of the aggregate is not condensed, C(60)(OH)(8) can still adjust its position by transportation or rotation. Therefore, when deposited on the surface, C(60)(OH)(8) assembles into a spherical structure or a single-layered fiber on the hydrophilic surface, but it forms a toroidal structure with concentric rings on the hydrophobic surface. If illuminated with light during assembly, fibers composed of multi-braids are observed on the hydrophilic surface. Our work demonstrated that the assembly of Janus fullerenol offered a new approach to prepare novel carbon structures.

Abstract:Four isomers are currently known for the trioxygenated fullerene derivative C-60(O)(3), three regioisomers with all of the oxygen addends as epoxy groups and the unstable ozonide isomer with a 1,2,3-trioxlane ring. Here we report the synthesis of an open-cage isomer for C-60(O)(3) with a ketolactone moiety embedded into the fullerene skeleton through a three-step procedure mediated by fullerene peroxide chemistry. Two fullerene skeleton carbon-carbon bonds are cleaved in the process. The open-cage derivative C-60(O)(3) can be converted back to C-60 through deoxygenation with PPh3. Single crystal X-ray structure confirmed the open-cage structure.

Abstract:Thermolysis of the fullerene hexaadduct C(60)(OO(t)Bu)(6) results in cleavage of two O-O bonds and elimination of two tert-butoxy groups to form two isomeric products with the formula C(60)(O)(2)(OO(t)Bu)(4) in comparable yields. The two oxygen atoms exist as two epoxy groups in one isomer 3, and as an epoxy and an ether group in the other isomer 2. Addition of hydroxylamine to 2 opens both the epoxy and the ether moieties to give a cage-opened keto-ketoxime derivative.

Abstract:A soluble fullerene, TAZC60, bearing an electron transport moiety (triazole) is synthesized and characterized. TAZC60 possesses a band gap of 2.2 eV, and HOMO and LUMO energy levels of 5.9 and 3.7 eV, respectively. Thin films of TAZC60 exhibit an electron mobility of 2.2 x 10(-8) m(2)/V s, as determined from the current-voltage characteristics that fit with a space-charge limited current (SCLC). These properties are similar to those of [6,6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester, PCBM, a soluble fullerene widely used in organic photovoltaics. The strategy of modifying fullerenes with a solublizing electron transport moiety may open avenues for the design of more specific polymers for controlling the morphology and transport properties of polymer-fullerene blends for polymer solar cells.

Abstract:1,2-(1-Acridin-10'-yl-2-aza-2-methylprop-1,3-ylene)fullerene was synthesized firstly and characterized by UV-Vis, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and electrospray ionization mass spectroscopy, which is capable of forming a stable complex with zinc tetraphenylporphyrin via the axial ligation. The steady state fluorescence studies show efficient quenching of the zinc tetraphenylporphyrin emission upon axial coordination of acridine attached to C-60.

Abstract:This work conducts the comprehensive theoretical study on the non-covalent complexation between cyclocarbons of different sizes and C60 fullerene for the first time. The binding energy between cyclocarbons and C60 fullerene is observed to be significantly stronger than that between two C18 or two C60 fullerenes, indicating a particularly strong affinity between them. The cyclocarbons and C60 fullerene can spontaneously assemble into non-covalent complexes characterized by - stacking in the gas phase at room temperature, and the hydrophobic effect caused by the solvent environment can promote this binding. From C18 to C34, the binding strength with C60 fullerene increases almost linearly with the increase of cyclocarbon size, and the C34@C60 dimer exhibits a perfect nano-Saturn structure. By studying the trimers of 2:1 form between cyclocarbons and C60 fullerene, it is observed that as the ring size increases, the angle between the two cyclocarbons gradually decreases. In the largest trimer we studied, C60@2C34, the fullerene is symmetrically surrounded by two cyclocarbons. The results on the trimers formed by cyclocarbon and C60 fullerenes in a 1:2 ratio showed when the size of the cyclocarbon sandwiched between two fullerenes is not quite large, the trimers exhibit an ideal dumbbell-like structure, and the presence of the first fullerene has a significant synergistic effect on the binding of the second one. Combined with the analysis of interaction energy and van der Waals potential, we found that the cyclocarbon greatly promotes the non-covalent dimerization of fullerenes, which acted as a “molecular glue”.

Abstract:A specific fullerene derivative, C-60(CHCOOH)(2), was introduced into the matrix network of well-ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica (SBA-15) via a chemical bond interaction. The methods included aminosilylation of the surface silanols within SBA-15 channels by 3-aminopropyl(trimethoxy)silane (APTS) and a subsequent amide reaction between amino groups of APTS/SBA-15 and carboxylic acids of C-60(CHCOOH)(2). The final material C-60(CHCOOH)(2)/APTS/SBA-15 was confirmed by XRD, TEM, and BET techniques, FIF-IR and UV-vis spectra. The [60]fullerene carboxylic derivative molecules were uniformly distributed in the channels of SBA-15, while pure [60]fullerene molecules remained as clusters or larger aggregate states.

Abstract:Coalescence of [60]fullerenes potentially produces hypothetical nanocarbon assemblies with non-naturally occurring topologies. Since the discovery of [60]fullerene in 1985, coalesced [60]fullerene oligomers have only been observed as transient species by transmission electron microscopy during an oligomerization process under a high electron acceleration voltage. Herein, we showcase the rational synthesis of covalent assemblies consisting of inherently chiral open-[60]fullerenes. The crystallographic analyses unveiled double-caged structures of non-conjugated and conjugated inter-[60]fullerene hybrids, in which the two [60]fullerene cages are bounds to each other through a covalent linkage. The former one further assembles via a heterochiral recognition so that four carbon cages are arranged in a tetrahedral manner both in solution and solid state. Reflecting radially-conjugated double π -surface nature, the inter-[60]fullerene conjugate exhibits strong electronic communication in its reduced states, intense absorption behavior, and chiroptical activity with a dissymmetry factor of 0.21 (at 674 nm) which breaks the record for known chiral organic molecules.

Abstract:[60]Fullerene mixed peroxides C60(O)(OOtBu)4 exhibit chemo- and regioselective reactions under mild conditions. The epoxy moiety is opened by ferric chloride to form vicinal hydroxy chloride C60Cl(OH)(OOtBu)4. BF3 is also effective in opening the epoxy moiety. The O-O bond of the fullerene mixed peroxide is cleaved by aluminum chloride to form both [5,6]- and [6,6]-fullerene hemiketals (oxohomo[60]fullerenes). A Hock-type rearrangement is proposed for the formation of the hemiketals, in which a fullerene C-C bond is cleaved. Lewis acids and/or visible light can initiate isomerization of the hemiketal isomers. Single-crystal X-ray analysis and theoretical calculations confirmed the results.
