Abstract:The title complex [Cu(DPQ)2(ClO4)](ClO4)·H2O·0.5CH2Cl2·CHCl3 (DPQ=2,3-di-2-pyridylquinoxaline) has been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity, infrared and UV-vis spectra. X-ray diffraction analysis at room temperature indicates that the complex (C37.5H28Cl6CuN8O9, Mr=1 010.92) crystallizes in orthorhombic system, space group Pmmn with a=1.054 7(2) nm, b=1.181 9(2) nm, c=2.001 4(4) nm, V=2.494 9(9) nm3, Z=2, Dc=1.346 g/cm3, F(000)=1 024, μ(MoKα)=0.813 mm-1. The final R and wR factors are 0.045 2 and 0.107 0, respectively with 2 367 independent reflections. The title complex is composed of discrete [Cu(DPQ)2(ClO4)]+ cations, uncoordinated ClO4- counter anions and solvent molecules. The central CuⅡ atom is penta-coordinated by four nitrogen donors of the pyridine rings of two DPQ and an oxygen atom of the perchlorate, and the coordination geometry of CuⅡ could be considered as an ideal square-pyramidal environment. Both DPQ ligands chelated the CuⅡ atom by forming two seven-membered rings involving only the N-atoms of the pyridine rings and there exists intramolecular π…π interaction between the two parallel quinoxaline rings.

Abstract:Electronic structure calculations have been carried out on the incomplete cubane-type transition-metal cluster cores M(3)S(4-n)O(n)(4+) (M = Mo, W; n = 0-4, of which the cluster core Mo3S44+ has been previously shown to exhibit what has been referred to as quasi-aromaticity. All the clusters are theoretically viewed to exhibit so-called quasi-aromaticity, i.e. having benzene-like behaviour. The calculations were accomplished at the level of Hartree-Fock self-consistent field theory by using an ab initio quantum chemical method with relativistic effective core potentials. The nature of the quasi-aromaticity is elucidated by analysing the calculated canonical molecular orbitals and localised molecular orbitals by the Foster-Boys localisation technique. On the basis of canonical molecular orbital and localised molecular orbital calculations, as well as Mulliken population analysis and natural population analysis, the d-p pi bonding scheme in these clusters is established.

Abstract:The predicted lower energy structures of neutral carbon cluster C-10 are presented by using the particle swarm optimization method in combination with quantum chemistry calculation. Our results describe a wonderful diversity of C-10 configuration with the DFT and MP2 methods. For linear and cyclic clusters, the energy of most stable monocyclic structure with D-5h symmetry is lower by 1.38 kcal/mol than the transition isomers with D-10h symmetry at CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level, which is consistent with the previous theoretical results by others. All linear structures of C-10 cluster have been certified as the metastable states at different calculation methods in this work. Simulated infrared spectra reveals that the extensive electron localization exists in the D-10h configuration leading to the decreasing of the number of vibration modes compared with D-5h, configuration. The nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) calculations indicate that planar C-10 system is a stable aromatic compound and the position used to calculate the aromatic indices can be affected by the most shielding or deshielded location that we employed. The contribution of the delocalized electrons to the pi-aromaticity is identical in C1(a) and C1(b). By the adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP) and canonical molecular orbital (CMO) analysis, we know that the highly symmetric structures have more energy degenerate CMOs and 2 center-2 electron bond connection, and monocyclic C-10 cluster is a globally doubly (sigma- and pi-) aromatic compound. Topological analysis and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis show that there isn't any electrostatic type of interactions in C-10 structures, and much of negative natural valence electron configuration comes from high angular momentum orbitals. According to the electron configurations, the natural hybrid orbital is mainly composed of sp hybrid in the systems. It is worth mentioning that the competition of complicated many body effects plays a significant role in stabilizing the distorted configuration of C-10 cluster. Abstract:By slightly changing the synthetic conditions, we have prepared two closely related linear tetranuclear CuII complexes with the symmetrical ONNO donor tetradentate Schiff-base ligand [H2L=(OH)C6H4(CH3)CN(CH2)3NC(CH3)C6H4(OH)] and with azide ions. These two distinctly coloured crystalline products were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV–Vis spectroscopy, CV, EPR spectra and variable temperature magnetic measurements. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of the green [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2] (1) and the red [Cu4(μ-L)2(μ1,1-N3)2(N3)2(H2O)2] (2) crystals show that the coordination environment of the two μ-phenoxo and μ1,1-azido bridged isomorphous tetranuclear CuII complexes are slightly different. Thus, both complexes are formed by very similar building units, although with a significant variation in the bridging Cu–O(phenoxo)–Cu and Cu–N(azido)–Cu bond angles. The consequences of these structural variations on the magnetic properties have been investigated from both the experimental and theoretical points of view by variable temperature magnetic measurements and DFT calculations.

Abstract:The concept of aromaticity is primarily invented to account for the high stability of the conjugated organic compounds, which possess a specific structural and chemical stability with (4n + 2) π electrons. In 1988, quasi-aromaticity was theoretically proposed for Mo3S44+ core in Mo3(μ3-S)(μ-S)3(χ-dtp)3(μ-dtp)∙L compound (χ: chelating ligand; dtp: (EtO)2PS2−) illustrated by canonical molecular orbitals. However, the origin of the quasi-aromaticity and chemical bonding remain ambiguous, lacking a thorough analysis in terms of stability and quantitative measurement of the aromatic character. Thus, in this work we systematically reported the electronic structure and aromaticity of a series of polynuclear metal chalcogenide clusters [M3X4(H2O)9]4+ (M = Cr, Mo, W, Sg; X = O, S, Se, Te) to explore an efficient tool of NICS index values at specific points to measure the quasi-aromaticity and to figure out the (d–p–d) π three-center bonding as the predominant origin from the arrangement of three Mo atoms and three bridged X atoms. Interestingly, derived from the Mo3...S3 quasi-plane, the extended sandwich cluster model of a S3...Mo3...S3 (Mo3S6) structure can be seen as the seed unit of the popular MoS2 nanomaterials, with resemblance between both molecular and periodic systems regarding geometries, electronic structures, and chemical bonding. Additionally, the highly symmetric Mo3S4 core in [Mo3X4(H2O)9]4+ can be arranged in a staggered and stacked manner to create Mo6S8 building block, corresponding to the crystalline structures in BaMo6S8 Chevrel phases, albeit with slight deformations. Drawing upon the observed similarities between cluster models and materials, we propose a new concept termed "cluster-assembly" materials. This concept involves the expansion from a high-symmetry and/or aromatic stable cluster seed unit to form the corresponding derivative materials, presenting an alternative paradigm for investigating crystals and enriching our comprehension of the stabilities exhibited by both gasphase clusters and solid-state materials. The concept of "cluster-assembly" materials not only contributes to the formulation of design strategies for novel materials or stable clusters but also provides valuable insights into the extension of periodic aromaticity.

Abstract:Ab initio calculations with relativistic effective potentials have been carried out on 12 trinuclear molybdenum/tungsten cluster aqua ions [M3X4(H2O)9]4− (M3= Mo3, W3 for X = O, S, Se, Te; M3=Mo2W, MoW2 for X = O, S). The electronic structures and bonding pictures of l-12 are discussed in terms of the delocalized and localized molecular orbitals as well as the Mulliken populations, natural populations, and Mayer bond orders. It is shown that the (d-p)ρ bonding in the puckered six-membered ring of the [M3(µ-X)3] core arises from a closed continuous ring of three mutually adjacent localized (d-p-d)ρ bonds with strong interactions. It is these three-centered two-electron (d-p-d)ρ bonds that account for the unusual physicochemical properties and reactivities of these cluster compounds. The wavelengths and the assignment of electronic spectra have been given, and the relation between the wavelength shili and the (d-p)ρ bonding is discussed, The reactivities of the ligand substitution reactions and two kinds of addition reactions as weil as some kinetic and redox properties of these compounds are briefly discussed by taking advantage of this Iocalization (d-p-d)ρ a bonding picture.

Abstract:By using Mo3S4(dtp)(4) . H2O (dtp=S2P(OEt)(2)) as starting material and from the substitution reaction of ligands and the addition reaction with CuI, two novel Mo-Cu-S cubane-like duster compounds {[CuMo3S4] . I . Abstract:The title compound {Mo 3(μ 3-S)(μ-S) 3[μ-SOP(OEt) 2][S 2P(OEt) 2] 3 (CH 3CN)} · CH 3CN, C 20H 46Mo 3N 2O 9P 4S 11, M r=1222. 9, has been synthesized by the reaction of [Mo 3(μ 3-S) (μ-S) 3] 4+ with Hdtp (hydrogen diethyldithiophosphate) and its structures was determined by X-ray crystallography. The crystal data for the title compound: triclinic, P1̄, Z=2, a=13. 011(8), b=13. 411(9), c=14. 385(5) Å , α=76. 59(5), β=78. 09(5), γ=82. 20(3)°, V=2382(2) Å 3, D c=1. 705 g/ cm 3, μ(MoKα)=1. 434 mm -1, F(000)=1228. The structure was refined to R=0. 080 for 5485 observed reflections. Quasi-aromaticity in the puckered-ring of Mo 3S 3 was experimentally probed by 31P NMR spectroscopic measurements. The 31P chemical shifts of ligand DTP's (diethyldithiophosphate) were modulated by the substituent effect of the adjacent bridging aromatic carboxylate through the long-distance super-conjugation via the trinuclear Mo cluster core.

Abstract:Many polynuclear Cu(I) compounds have been synthesized, but the problem whether there is direct or no direct Cu-Cu bonding in these compounds is not clear. The electronic structure of [CuNRR’]4 type clusters was investigated by using density functional methods. The results of geometrical optimization are in good agreement with experiment, and the localization of MO’s shows that there are four Cu-Cu σ bonds to form the square Cu4 ring in addition to the four bridging Cu-N-Cu bonds. A concept of the covalence of molecular fragments is proposed to describe the bonding in these clusters.

Abstract:The stability of small Au-m (m = 47) clusters is investigated by analyzing their energetic, geometric, vibrational, magnetic, and electron density properties. Gold clusters can be constructed from stable cyclic 3-center-2-electron (3c-2e) Au-3(+) units (3-rings) with sigma-aromaticity. The stabilization requires a flow of negative charge from internal 3-rings with electron-deficient bonding to peripheral 3-ring units with stronger AuAu bonds. The valence-isoelectronic clusters Au6 and Au5Zn+ have similar electronic properties: Au5Zn+ is a strongly s-aromatic molecule. An understanding of the structure of Aum clusters is obtained by deriving a Clars Rule equivalent for polycyclic gold clusters: The structure with the larger number of rings with dominant 3c-2e character and a smaller degree of 3c-3e character occupies the global minimum of the Aum potential energy surface.

Abstract:By using ab initio methods of all-electron or effective core potential calculations, the electronic structures and the possible aromaticity of some 10π-electron systems, C6H64− (1), N64− (2), P64− (3), S62− (4), Te62− (5) and S3N3− (6), have been studied at the SCF levels using 4-31G//4-31G and 6-31G∗//6-31G∗ basis sets. The bonding characteristics of these systems are analysed in terms of the canonical molecular orbital and the Foster-Boys localized molecular orbital results. The application of the second-order Jahn-Teller theorem to the stability of these diamagnetical planar species is presented.

Abstract:Polynuclear zinc clusters [Zn x ] ( x >2) with multicentred Zn–Zn bonds and +1 oxidation state zinc (that is, zinc(I) or Zn I ) are to our knowledge unknown in chemistry. Here we report the polyzinc compounds with an unusual cubic [Zn I 8 (HL) 4 (L) 8 ] 12− (L=tetrazole dianion) cluster core, composed of zinc(I) ions and short Zn–Zn bonds (2.2713(19) Å). The [Zn I 8 ]-bearing compounds possess surprisingly high stability in air and solution. Quantum chemical studies reveal that the eight Zn 4s 1 electrons in the [Zn I 8 ] cluster fully occupy four bonding molecular orbitals and leave four antibonding ones entirely empty, leading to an extensive electron delocalization over the cube and significant stabilization. The bonding pattern of the cube represents a class of aromatic system that we refer to as cubic aromaticity, which follows a 6 n +2 electron counting rule. Our finding extends the aromaticity concept to cubic metallic systems, and enriches Zn–Zn bonding chemistry.

Abstract:Using sulfide ion to substitute the weakly copper(I)-philic ligands of MS(4)(-)(n)()(2)(-)O(n)()/Cu(+) compounds, (M = Mo, W; n = 0, 1), we have prepared and characterized four novel tetradecanuclear clusters having the general formula [(n-Bu)(4)N](4)[M(4)Cu(10)S(16)E(2)E']H(2)O, (M = Mo, E = E' = O for complex 1; M = W, E = (1)/(2)O + (1)/(2)S, E' = O, for complex 2; M = Mo, E = S, E' = (1)/(2)O + (1)/(2)S for complex 3; M = W, E = E' = S, for complex 4). Crystal structures of compounds 1-4 were determined; they are isomorphous and crystallized in the orthorhombic space group Pna2(1), with a = 26.6997(2) Å, b = 19.3133(4) Å, c = 21.4577(4) Å, V = 11064.9(3) Å(3), Z = 4 for [(n-Bu)(4)N](4)[Mo(4)Cu(10)S(18)O].H(2)O (3) and with a = 26.8141(8) Å, b = 19.4412(6) Å, c = 21.4039(5) Å, V = 11157.8(5) Å(3), Z = 4 for [(n-Bu)(4)N](4)[W(4)Cu(10)S(19)].H(2)O (4). The cluster cores have approximate sigma symmetry. The anions 1-4 may be viewed as consisting of one incomplete cubane-like Cu(3)MS(3)E fragment, one trigonal prism-type Cu(3)MS(4), and two butterfly-type Cu(2)MS(3)E' fragments, bridged by two &mgr;(3)-S and one &mgr;(4)-S atoms. There are two (&mgr;(3)-S)Cu(3) configurations in the compounds. Infrared, Raman, and UV/vis spectra of the above compounds are discussed, and the main absorption bands are assigned. (95)Mo NMR spectra and cylic voltammograms are investigated and compared with those of other compounds, (95)Mo NMR spectra show that in the solution there are three kinds of coordination environments of Mo in complexes 1 and 3, and cyclic voltammograms indicate that complexes 1-4 have irreversible electrochemical reductions.

Abstract:The first successful attempt to prepare W3S4 {S2P (OEt)2}4 (H2O) in organic phase is reported. Its substitution and addition reactions are investigated systematically, and the substitution sequences of the "loose" ligands are determined. The crystallographic data of the cluster compounds with [W3S4}4+ and [W3CuS4]5+ cores are compared and their UV-Vis spectra are firstly reported. Abstract:Reactions of the preformed cluster [(η(5)-C(5)Me(5))(2)Mo(2)(μ(3)-S)(4)Cu(2)(MeCN)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (1) with two tetraphosphine ligands, 1,4-N,N,N',N'-tetra(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)benzene diamine (dpppda) and N,N,N',N'-tetra(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)ethylene diamine (dppeda), produced two bicyclic clusters {[(η(5)-C(5)Me(5))(2)Mo(2)(μ(3)-S)(4)Cu(2)](2)(L)}(ClO(4))(4) (3: L = dpppda; 4: L = dppeda). Analogous reactions of 1 or [(η(5)-C(5)Me(5))(2)Mo(2)(μ(3)-S)(4)Cu(2)(MeCN)(2)](PF(6))(2) (2) with two N,P mixed ligands, N,N-bi(diphenylphosphanylmethyl)-2-aminopyridine (bdppmapy) and N-diphenylphosphanylmethyl-4-aminopyridine (dppmapy), afforded two monocyclic clusters {[(η(5)-C(5)Me(5))(2)Mo(2)(μ(3)-S)(4)Cu(2)](2)(L)(2)}X(4) (5: L = bdppmapy, X = ClO(4); 6: L = dppmapy, X = PF(6)). Compounds 3-6 were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra, UV-vis spectra, (1)H and (31)P{(1)H} NMR spectra, ESI-MS and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. In the tetracations of 3-6, two cubane-like [Mo(2)(μ(3)-S)(4)Cu(2)] cores are linked either by one dpppda or dppeda bridge to form a bicyclic structure or by a pair of bdppmapy or dppmapy bridges to afford a monocyclic structure. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 1 and 3-6 in MeCN were also investigated by femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) technique with a 50 fs pulse width at 800 nm. Compounds 3-6 exhibited enhanced third-order NLO performances relative to that of 1.

Abstract:The quinoid structure, a resonance structure of benzenoid, gives rise to peculiar chemical reactivity and physical properties. A complete characterization of its geometric and electronic properties on the atomic scale is of vital importance to understand and engineer the chemical and physical properties of quinoid molecules. Here, we report a real-space structural and electronic characterization of quinoid poly(para-phenylene) (PPP) chains by using noncontact atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. Our results reveal that quinoid PPP chains adopt a coplanar adsorption configuration on Cu(111) and host in-gap states near Fermi level. In addition, intra- and interchain hopping of quinoid structure are observed, indicative of a quasiparticle behavior originating from charge-lattice interactions. The experimental results are nicely reproduced by tight-binding calculations. Our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the structural and electronic properties of quinoid PPP chains in real space and may be further extended to address the dynamics of nonlinear excitations in quinoid molecules.

Abstract:Metal-containing aromatic systems (metalla-aromatics) are unique and important both experimentally and theoretically. Among metalla-aromatics, six-membered metallabenzenes and metallabenzynes have attracted much attention in recent years. However, reports on their superior homologues are rare. In this work, the first series of aromatic dicupra[10]annulenes were isolated from the reaction of dilithio reagents and copper salts. Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis revealed dicupra[10]annulenes with averaged bond lengths. (7)Li NMR spectra and theoretical calculations revealed considerable aromatic character. XPS data suggested that the oxidation state of Cu atom in dicupra[10]annulenes was more likely to be Cu(I), indicating that the dilithio moieties in dicupra[10]annulenes participated as noninnocent ligands. This work demonstrates a novel approach to construct macrocyclic metalla-aromatics.
