Abstract:The excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) are considered the simplest and most effective technique for determining water quality given its high selectivity and sensitivity to dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water columns. The key fluorescence peaks generally comprise two protein-like peaks (Peak B-1, B-2-tyrosine-like and Peak T-1, T-2-tryptophan-like) and two humic-like peaks (Peak C and A). The application of EEMs in the analysis of DOM in urban waters across the Changchun City is firstly investigated. According to the intensities and locations of the marked fluorescence peaks, four types of waters were recorded across the urban waters. Strong positive correlation was observed between the intensity of Peak T-1(lambda(ex/em)=270-280/340-360nm) and TN(R-2 = 0.796), TP(R-2 = 0.836) and COD(R-2 = 0.506), whereas Peak T-2(lambda(ex/em)=210-230/340-360 nm) was strongly correlated with ammonia (R-2 = 0.805). The fluorescence peaks displayed the impacts from human activities and provided water quality information timely instead of the traditional approaches, which are labour-extensive and costly for laboratory analysis.
