Abstract:This paper deals with approaches to knowledge reduction based on variable precision rough set model. The concepts of β lower distribution reduct and β upper distribution reduct based on variable precision rough sets (VPRS) are first introduced. Their equivalent definitions are then given, and the relationships among β lower and β upper distribution reducts and alternative types of knowledge reduction in inconsistent systems are investigated. It is proved that for some special thresholds, β lower distribution reduct is equivalent to the maximum distribution reduct, whereas β upper distribution reduct is equivalent to the possible reduct. The judgement theorems and discernibility matrices associated with the β lower and β upper distribution reducts are also established, from which we can obtain the approaches to knowledge reduction in VPRS.

Abstract:The main objective of the paper is to introduce some new concepts of knowledge reduction based on variable precision rough set theory such as upper distribution reduction and lower distribution reduction. The decision rules derived from the distribution consistent set are compatible with the ones derived from original system. Their equivalent definitions are studied. The relationships among alternative reducts in inconsistent information systems are discussed. The judgement theorems and discernibility matrixes with respect to upper and lower reductions are obtained. So one can calculates the reducts by the discernibility formulas. These results are meaningful both in the theory and in applications.

Abstract:In this paper we propose a new dynamic reduct algorithm based on rough sets theory. When the number of the object in the information table increase, instead of treating the changed information table as a new one and finding the reduct again like rough set reduct algorithm does, the dynamic reduct algorithm just update the old reduct set based on the increased objects, so the computation time is greatly saved. Also the entropy criterion is introduced to the dynamic reduct algorithm, so the statistical causality between the attributes could be find and the reduct′s sensitivity to the noise unavoidably when the \$γ\$ criterion is applied could be removed. An illustrated example shows that by the dynamic reduct algorithm, computation time is greatly saved compared with the rough set theory based reduct algorithm, at the same time the same reduct is find with less objects, furthermore the results are sorted according to their causal strength.

Abstract:Knowledge reduction is one of the most important tasks in rough set theory. A variable precision rough set model is introduced into fuzzy objective information systems, on which four knowledge reductions, β upper and lower approximation reduction, β upper and lower distribution reduction are defined. The judgment theorem and the discernibility matrix with respect to β upper and lower distribution consistent set is obtained, by means of which, the method of β upper and lower distribution reduction is presented.

Abstract:This paper deals with knowledge discovering in incomplete information systems.An incomplete information system with unknown date can be regarded as set_valued system.A new method of reduct called lower_approximation distribution reduct from incomplete information system is presented.The judgement theorem of reduct is proposed.The definition of the lower_approximation distribution rules,the discernibility function,and the method of all the lower_approximation distribution rules for object x are presented.It is proved that x_lower_approximation distisbution rules are x_certain rules when a complete infrmation system is consistent.It is illustrated that lower_approximation distribution rules in inlomplete information system is extension of certain rules.
Information Entropy Based Reduct Searching Algorithm

Abstract:In this paper, a new reduct searching algorithm is proposed to benefit the applications of rough sets theory. The information entropy is introduced to the reduct searching algorithm, so that indeterministic causalities among attributes can be found and the reduct sensitivity to noise, occurring unavoidably when the approximation quality function /spl gamma/ is applied, can be removed. The theoretical analysis and an illustrated example show that the rule set induced by this algorithm uses less attributes than that by algorithms based on the rough set /spl gamma/ function. At the same time, the new algorithm gives a larger rule set coverage, especially when the data are polluted by noise or the causalities among the attributes are indeterministic. In practice, noise pollution of data and indeterministic causalities are usual situations, so this algorithm is more applicable than those based on the rough sets /spl gamma/ function.

Abstract:This article deals with approaches to knowledge reductions in inconsistent information systems (ISs). The main objective of this work was to introduce a new kind of knowledge reduction called a maximum distribution reduct, which preserves all maximum decision classes. This type of reduction eliminates the harsh requirements of the distribution reduct and overcomes the drawback of the possible reduct that the derived decision rules may be incompatible with the ones derived from the original system. Then, the relationships among the maximum distribution reduct, the distribution reduct, and the possible reduct were discussed. The judgement theorems and discernibility matrices associated with the three reductions were examined, from which we can obtain approaches to knowledge reductions in rough set theory (RST). Abstract:A new Information Entropy based reduct searching algorithm is proposed to tackle the problems involved in Rough set based reducting. Instead of Rough set reductingγcriterion, the new algorithm adopt information entropy as attribute selecting criterion. Using this algorithm, problems in prior criterion, such as sensitive to the data noise, unable to express the probability causality between attributes, can be solved. Two illustrated examples show that when there exists deterministic relationship between attributes, new algorithm can give the set of attributes expressing this relationship as the Rough set reductingγcriterion. When relationship between attributes is probability causative, or deterministic relationship is emerged by noise, Rough set reductingγcriterion becomes useless. However, in these cases, the proposed algorithm can give the correct answer needed.

Abstract:Knowledge reduction is one of the most important research issues in decision-theoretic rough set model. This paper first defines a new attribute measure for a reduct preserving boundary region partition, then constructs a connection degree to evaluate the different candidate reducts, and finally proposes a knowledge reduction algorithm for decision-theoretic rough set model. Example analysis shows that this algorithm is valid.

Abstract:In this paper, two new concepts of lower approximation reduction and upper approximation reduction are introduced. Lower approximation reduction is the smallest attribute subset that preserves the lower approximations of all decision classes, and upper approximation reduction is the smallest attribute subset that preserves the upper approximations of all decision classes. For an inconsistent DT, an upper approximation consistent set must be a lower approximation consistent set, but the converse is not true. For a consistent DT, they are equivalent. After giving their equivalence definitions, we examine the judgement theorem and discernibility matrices associated with the two reducts, from which we can obtain approaches to knowledge reduction in inconsistent decision tables.

Abstract:Attribute reduction plays an important role in the areas of rough sets and granular computing. Many kinds of attribute reducts have been defined in previous studies. However, most of them concentrate on data only, which result in the difficulties of choosing appropriate attribute reducts for specific applications. It would be ideal if we could combine properties of data and user preference in the definition of attribute reduct. In this paper, based on reviewing existing definitions of attribute reducts, we propose a generalized attribute reduct which not only considers the data but also user preference. The generalized attribute reduct is the minimal subset which satisfies a specific condition defined by users. The condition is represented by a group of measures and a group of thresholds, which are relevant to user requirements or real applications. For the same data, different users can define different reducts and obtain their interested results according to their applications. Most current attribute reducts can be derived from the generalized reduct. Several reduction approaches are also summarized to help users to design their appropriate reducts.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new type of reducts called the λ-Fuzzy-Reduct, where the fuzzy similarity relation is constructed by means of cosine-distances of decision vectors and the parameter λ is used to tune the similarity precision level. The λ-Fuzzy-Reduct can eliminate harsh requirements of the distribution reduct, and it is more flexible than the maximum distribution reduct, the traditional reduct, and the generalized decision reduct. Furthermore, we prove that the distribution reduct, the maximum distribution reduct, and the generalized decision reduct can be converted into the traditional reduct. Thus in practice the implementations of knowledge reductions for the three types of reducts can be unified into efficient heuristic algorithms for the traditional reduct. We illustrate concepts and methods proposed in this paper by an example.

Abstract:Feature subset selection and data reduction is a fundamental and most explored area in machine learning and data mining. Rough set theory has been witnessed great success in attribute reduction. A series of reduction algorithms were constructed for all kinds of applications based on rough set models. There is usually more than one reduct for some real world data sets. It is not very clear which one or which subset of the reducts should be selected for learning. Neither experimental comparison nor theoretic analysis was reported so far. In this paper, we will review the proposed attribute reduction algorithms and reduction selection strategies. Then a series of numeric experiments are presented. The results show that, statistically speaking, the classification systems trained with the reduct with the least features get the best generalization power in terms of single classifiers. Furthermore, Good performance is observed from combining the classifiers constructed with multiple reducts compared with Bagging and random subspace ensembles.

Abstract:Existing,approaches to knowledge reductions for the distribution reduct,the maximum distribution reduct and the assignment reduct of an inconsistent decision table are based on discernibility matrixes,which are very time-consuming when the dataset is large.To overcome this shortcoming,an approach is proposed to convert the computation for the three types of reducts of the original inconsistent decision table into the computation for the Pawlak reduct of three types of derived consistent decision tables.Thus,efficient heuristic knowledge reduction algorithms for the Pawlak reduct can be used to reduce computational costs.Furthermore,the λ-reduct,a new type of reducts,is introduced.By tuning the parameter λ,a set of reducts can be obtained,each of which reflects the different level of similarities of decision vectors.The λ-reduct eliminates the harsh requirements of the distribution reduct and is more flexible than the three types of reducts.

Abstract:On fundamental aspect of variable precision rough approximate reduction is an important mechanism for knowledge discovery. This paper mainly deals with attribute reductions of an inconsistent decision information system based on a dependence space. Through the concept of inclusion degree, a generalized decision distribution function is first constructed. A decision distribution relation is then defined. On the basis of this decision distribution relation, a dependence analogy relation representation of VPRS data space is proposed, and an equivalence congruence based on the attribute sets is also obtained. Applying the congruence on a dependence space, new approaches to find a distribution consistent set are formulated. The theorems for judging distribution consistent sets are also established by using these congruences and the decision distribution relation.

Abstract:Reduction is one of the key problem in rough set theory due to its applications in data mining, rule induction, classification, etc.. In this paper the reductions for a set-valued decision information system(DIS) are studied. The judgment theorem and the discernibility matrix of the generalized decision reduct in a set-valued DIS are given, and the relationships among the generalized decision reduct and alternative types of knowledge reduction in set-valued DIS are investigated. It is proved that the reduct in the consistent set-valued DIS is equivalent to the generalized decision reduct, and the possible reduct in the inconsistent set-valued DIS is equivalent to the generalized decision reduct. The judgment theorem and the discernibility matrix associated with the possible reduct are also established.
