Abstract:Developing platinum catalysts highly active for hydrocarbon combustion at low temperatures is crucial but yet challenging, since platinum may convert into inert PtOx in oxidizing atmospheres and deactivates during catalytic combustion. In this article, a x/TiO2 catalyst with platinum nanoparticles decorated by amorphous TiOx overlayers was synthesized via a strong metal–support interaction (SMSI)-related strategy. The Pt-TiOx electronic interaction stabilized reactive Pt0 sites during reactions, resulting in outstanding activities and high stability for C3H8 and C3H6 combustion. The influences of sulfates—common byproducts forming on catalysts applied for automobile exhaust purification—were studied by monitoring the platinum states, the hydrocarbon adsorption behavior, and the catalytic performance of sulfated x/TiO2 with in situ DRIFTS. Abstract:Sintering is among the most challenging obstacles preventing the development of platinum catalysts that highly effective for hydrocarbon combustion at low temperatures. To overcome this obstacle, a Pt@TiO2 catalyst with platinum nanoparticles encapsulated by TiOx overlayers was synthesized in this article, via melamine-mediated calcinations at 800 °C in air. Being physically constrained (“protected”) and electronically buffered (“Ptx+/Pt0 ↔ Ti3+/Ti4+”) by the thermally stable TiOx, this catalyst preserved a large amount of reactive metallic Pt0 sites, which therefore exhibited obviously higher activity for C3H8 and C3H6 combustion in comparison with conventional supported Pt/TiO2 catalysts. Moreover, steam and SO2 in the reaction atmospheres caused reversible influences on the catalytic performance of this sample, indicating the high practical potential of such a recipe for the design of platinum catalysts with superior activity and durability for hydrocarbon combustion.

Abstract:Different types of Pt-Co3O4 catalysts were synthesized via metal–organic templates, by changing varying loading forms, stability templates, and pyrolysis temperatures to boost toluene combustion. The regulatory mechanism of strong metal support interaction (SMSI) and the relationship between SMSI and catalytic performance were studied. The results demonstrate that Pt-Co3O4 (PCPO) synthesized using a more stable metal–organic template and an in-situ growth strategy effectively prolonging carbon retention time during the calcination process is most conducive to the formation of SMSI. However, over-formed SMSI can not unconditionally improve the performance of heterogeneous catalysis, and may even hinder the catalytic reaction. Therefore, selecting appropriate preparation conditions to achieve a moderate SMSI is crucial for optimizing the catalytic performance of the supported catalyst. Finally, on Pt-Co3O4, the combustion mechanism of toluene follows both the Langmur-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism and Mars-VanKrevelen (MvK) mechanisms. This study provides valuable insights for SMSI in regulating and optimizing the performance of supported catalysts in the field of heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:This study presents an efficient, economic, and simple preparation strategy for Pt/TiO2 monolith catalysts. Nano-Pt/TiO2 dispersion liquid with good activity and stability was synthesized by hydrolysis and chemical reduction method. Various Pt/TiO2 monolithic catalysts were prepared by spraying the dispersion liquid on different substrates. Results of transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, N-2 adsorption-desorption, H-2 temperature-programmed and CO oxidation showed that the Pt/TiO2 nanoparticles with good mesoporous structure and redox properties were highly dispersed on the substrate. The as-prepared 0.5 Pt/TiO2 cordierite monolithic catalyst with 0.1 wt%s Pt content exhibited excellent catalytic combustion activity (T-90 of toluene combustion was 212 degrees C), stability (no deactivation was observed during a 120 h test) and firmness (mass loss was 0.11% after 1 h ultrasonic vibration) under experimental conditions. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, this method is more suitable for large-scale production of waste-gas-treated monolith catalysts. And this method meets the concept of energy saving and emission reduction because of its simplicity, high efficiency, environmental friendliness, and high utilization of active components.

Abstract:By effectively controlling the strong metal -support interaction (SMSI), the formation of acid sites and oxygen vacancies (O v ) on the Pt/CeO 2 catalyst was optimized. The efficient co -combustion of toluene and CO on Pt/ CeO 2 -450 was achieved. In the dual -pollutant system, when the conversion rate was 90 %, the corresponding conversion temperatures of toluene and CO were 165 degrees C and 173 degrees C, respectively. With the increase of SMSI, the catalytic activity of Pt/CeO 2 showed a trend of first increase and then decrease. This was proportional to the content of weak acid sites, medium acid sites, and O v generated on their surfaces. Compared with the combustion of a single pollutant, the result displays that toluene and CO had significant competitive adsorption on Pt/CeO 2 . The inhibition of toluene on CO also showed the same trend as the catalytic activity with the increase of SMSI. Under the double inhibition, Pt/CeO 2 exhibited preferential selectivity for toluene combustion. However, the in situ DRIFTS results showed that this competitive adsorption phenomenon did not interfere with the combustion reaction path. The co -combustion of toluene and CO follows independent reaction paths. This work provides valuable insights and ideas for realizing the development of efficient and environmentally friendly catalysts through SMSI regulation.

Abstract:Revealing the role of engineered surface oxygen vacancies in the catalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of importance for the development of highly efficient catalysts. However, because of various structures of VOC molecules, the role of surface oxygen vacancies in different catalytic reactions remains ambiguous. Herein, a defective Pt/TiO2-x catalyst is proposed to uncover the different catalytic mechanisms of C3H6 and C3H8 combustion via experiments and theoretical calculations. The electron transfer, originated from the oxygen vacancy, facilitates the formation of reduced Pt0 species and simultaneously interfacial chemisorbed O2, thus promoting the C3H6 combustion via efficient C═C cleavage. The reduced Pt nanoparticles facilitate the robust chemisorption of bridging dimer O22- (Pt-O-O-Ti) species. This chemisorbed oxygen inhibits the C3H8 combustion by depressing C3H8 adsorption. This work offers insights for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for activating the C═C bond in alkene or C-H bond in alkane.
Structure-Directing Role of Support on Toluene Catalytic Combustion over Pt/TiO2 Catalysts

Abstract:Catalytic combustion is the state-of-the-art technology for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) elimination and the supported platinum is generally regarded as one of the most desirable industrial catalysts. The crystal structure of support strongly influences the electronic properties of Pt species and thus catalytic combustion performance. Herein, we systematically investigated the influence of TiO2 with different crystalline forms (anatase, rutile, and brookite) on toluene catalytic combustion in Pt/TiO2 catalyst. The results found that the rutile TiO2-supported Pt catalyst exhibits the best activity, followed by anatase-supported and brookite-supported Pt. Detailed characterization further revealed the electron transfer driven by Pt-rutile TiO2 electronic interaction, not only facilitated the formation of reactive Pt0 nanoparticles but also stabilized the Pt0 species during catalytic combustion. The Pt0 species in rutile TiO2-supported Pt catalyst promoted the chemisorption of oxygen and accordingly resulted in outstanding catalytic activity for toluene combustion. This work offers new insights into the Pt-TiO2 electronic interaction, providing a practical guide for developing highly efficient Pt-based catalyst for VOCs combustion.
Optimising PtFe nanoparticle structure to enhance catalytic activity and stability for propane oxidation

Abstract:Although the development of highly active and stable platinum catalysts for the complete oxidation of hydrocarbons is crucial, there are still significant challenges that need to be addressed. Herein, the surface structure of PtFe nanoparticles (NPs) on PtFe/CeO 2 - x ( x = CO, H, O) catalysts was precisely tuned via thermal treatment in CO, H 2 and O 2 atmospheres. The structure of the PtFe NPs on the PtFe/CeO 2 -O catalyst consisted of dispersed FeO x nanoclusters anchored on the PtFe NPs core. As a result, the PtFe/CeO 2 -O exhibited superior activity and water resistance for propane oxidation among all catalysts, which stems from the cooperation among robust metallic Pt sites, abundant active oxygen species, and FeO x nanoclusters as additional sites for oxygen supply. However, the reaction path of propane oxidation was similar among the PtFe/CeO 2 - x catalysts. This study offers encouraging insights for the deliberate development of robust and high-performing bimetallic catalysts to eradicate volatile organic compound pollutants. Abstract:Up to now, methane combustion catalysts generally suffer from issues such as poor reaction stability and susceptibility to sulfur poisoning, which have become the key factors restricting their application, so it is necessary to construct catalysts with excellent chemical stability of the active center and strong sulfur resistance. Here, we showed the crystal phase-modulated state of PtO x nanoparticles (PtO x NPs) on TiO 2 and investigated their effects on the reactivity of methane catalytic combustion and anti-SO 2 poisoning properties. It was found that Pt/r-TiO 2 showed superior activity, stability, and resistance to SO 2 poisoning. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images showed that the PtO x NPs on the surface of r-TiO 2 were much more stable than a-TiO 2 for the reason that the Ostwald ripening of PtO x NPs on a-TiO 2 was facilitated due to the strong metal-support interaction (MSI) between PtO x NPs and TiO 2 and the low migration energy of the PtO x NPs on TiO 2 , while they were moderate of Pt/r-TiO 2 , and then the active sites were stabilized during methane combustion. The activity was controlled by the size and electronic structure of PtO x NPs, which were stable on the surface of r-TiO 2 with a higher Pt 4+ content, and the density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed the role of r-TiO 2 in increasing the quantities of surface oxygen vacancies. Moreover, the SO 2 tolerance of Pt/r-TiO 2 was also the best among all kinds of Pt-based catalysts prepared, which was attributed to the minimal adsorption energy ( E ad ) of SO 2 on r-TiO 2 , and the absence of sulfate and sulfite deposition on the Pt/r-TiO 2 catalyst confirmed by TGA and in-situ DRIFTS studies on SO 2 adsorption. In this research, the anti-SO 2 poisoning and reaction stability were realized by adjusting the interaction between SO 2 , active components, and supports, which provided a new insight for the design of stable Pt-based SO 2 -resistant catalysts.

Abstract:A Pt/WO3/TiO2 catalyst for propane oxidation was prepared by a stepwise wet impregnation method, and was aged at 800 degrees C for 5 hr. Compared to the sulfate-derived titania supported catalyst, the introduction of tungsten oxide as stable Brønsted acid sites led to the formation of more metallic platinum active sites at the Pt/WO3 interface. The dissociation of surface intermediates for propane oxidation was promoted on the WO3-modified catalyst. This, as well as the inhibition effects of tungsten oxide on the sintering of anatase and the phase transformation to rutile, resulting in a high activity and thermal stability for the Pt/WO3/TiO2 catalyst.

Abstract:To achieve efficient and stable removal of carbon monoxide (CO) in complex flue gases, a series of Pt/1TiO2-xZrO2 catalysts were prepared using a simple solid mixing method, and their catalytic performances for CO oxidation were studied in simulated flue gases containing H2O and SO2. The synthesized Pt/1TiO2-3ZrO2 exhibited optimal sulfur and water resistance. SO2-TPD testing indicated that the minimum amount of sulfate species deposited on Pt/ZrO2-SC and the introduction of TiO2 promoted the desorption of SO2 from ZrO2-SC. The infrared spectrum indicated that the preferential adsorption of SO2 onto the multiphase ZrO2 surface prevented the occupation of the active species by SO2. The enhanced acidity of the carrier after binding to SO42− inhibited the further adsorption of SO2 on the catalyst surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that Pt nanoparticles with low dispersibility maintain a stable metallic state during the reaction process while retaining their CO oxidation capabilities by suppressing the generation of the Pt-O-SO3 groups. When water was simultaneously present in the flue gases, hydrophilic TiO2 promoted the dissociation of H2O on the catalyst surface, and formed the surface hydroxyl groups with stronger SO2 reactivity, which further inhibited the occupation of the active site Pt0 by SO2.

Abstract:Propene combustion is crucial in emission-control applications. A set of Pt/γ-Al2O3 samples were synthesized through either the chemical reduction-deposition method (denoted as RD) or the incipient wetness impregnation method (denoted as IW) and employed for propene combustion. By adjusting the synthesis conditions, Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalysts with diverse Pt nanoparticle size distributions were produced. Due to the reduction in particle size, the Pt-RD catalysts exhibit better catalytic activity than the Pt-IW catalyst. With an average Pt nanoparticle size of 2.93 nm, the 1% Pt-RD3 catalyst exhibited optimal catalytic performance, with a complete C3H6 conversion at 110 °C. A higher proportion of Pt0 was confirmed to be beneficial to propene combustion by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigations. Moreover, Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analysis demonstrated that Pt0 atoms at edge and corner surface sites participated in C3H6 oxidation as active sites. Extended experiments revealed that the 1% Pt-RD3 catalyst exhibited strong tolerance against water and high oxidation reactivities of other pollutants in vehicle emission. This work provides an effective attempt toward synthesis and applications of Pt-based catalysts for hydrocarbon combustion.

Abstract:Industrialization has resulted in the rapid increase of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, which have caused serious issues to human health and the environment. In this study, an extensive Cu incorporating TiO2 induced nucleophilic oxygen structure was constructed in the CuTiOx catalyst, which exhibited superior low-temperature catalytic activity for C3H6 combustion. Thorough structural, surface characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the Cu–O–Ti hybridization induced nucleophilic oxygen initiates C3H6 combustion by abstracting the C–H bond. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) results indicated that incorporated copper species acted as the major adsorbent site for the propene molecule. In combination of the DRIFTS and DFT results, the promotion effect of the nucleophilic O on the C–H bond abstraction and CO2 formation pathway was proposed. Here, we have elaborately designed a series of Mo-decorated 0.1 wt.% Pt/TiO 2 catalyst (Pt/Mo/Ti) catalyst. The catalytic test showed that the Pt/3Mo/Ti catalyst achieved 100 % CO conversion above 200 °C and maintained excellent long-term catalytic stability in the presence of SO 2 . The enhancement in SO 2 -tolerance ability was due to the suitable Brønsted acidity to weaken the SO 2 adsorption and strong charge transfer ability to reduce the oxidation of SO 2 to SO 3 . Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) suggests that the Pt-O-Mo species are present in atomically dispersed form in the Pt/3Mo/Ti catalyst. The surface O = MoO 4 sites with terminal Mo = O bond prevented SO 2 from reacting with platinum, thus inhibiting its migration to TiO 2 and TiOSO 4 formation. We also revealed the strong interaction between platinum and molybdenum and characterized the CO oxidation pathway in the presence of SO 2 . This research offers new insights into the mechanism of the catalytic CO oxidation and SO 2 resistance over Mo-decorated Pt/TiO 2 catalyst.

Abstract:A facile and effective in situ encapsulation‐oxidation strategy is adopted for constructing a coupling catalyst composed of atomically dispersed Pt‐doped Co3O4 spinel nanoparticles embedded in polyhedron frames for robust propane total oxidation at low temperature. This study adopts a facile and effective in situ encapsulation‐oxidation strategy for constructing a coupling catalyst composed of atomically dispersed Pt‐doped Co3O4 spinel nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in polyhedron frames (PFs) for robust propane total oxidation. Benefiting from the abundant oxygen vacancies and more highly valent active Co3+ species caused by the doping of Pt atoms as well as the confinement effect, the optimized 0.2Pt‐Co3O4 NPs/PFs catalyst exhibits excellent propane catalytic activity with low T90 (184 °C), superior apparent reaction rate (21.62×108 (mol gcat−1 s−1)), low apparent activation energy (Ea = 17.89 kJ mol−1), high turnover frequency ( 811×107 (mol gcat−1 s−1)) as well as good stability. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations indicate that the doping of Pt atoms enhances the oxygen activation ability, and decreases the energy barrier required for CH bond breaking, thus improving the deep oxidation process of the intermediate species. This study opens up new ideas for constructing coupling catalysts from atomic scale with low cost to enhance the activation of oxygen molecules and the deep oxidation of linear short chain alkanes at low temperature.

Abstract:The sulfated Pt/Al2O3 catalyst was synthesized by impregnating H2SO4 on the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. It exhibits higher catalytic activity than Pt/Al2O3 for soot oxidation under loose contact conditions in a feed flow containing NO and O-2. Further studies ascribe its good activity to a synergistic effect between sulfate species and platinum. Firstly, the electronegative sulfate species may improve the oxidation-resistance of metallic platinum in the oxidizing atmosphere, which is important for achieving high NO <-> NO2 <-> soot recycling efficiency; Secondly, the sulfate species inhibit the NOx adsorption on the alumina support, leading to a preferential adsorption of NOx on the surface of soot rather than on the catalyst, and thus provide more chances for NO2-soot reaction to generate the surface oxygenated complexes (SOCs); Finally, the sulfate species can promote the further decomposition of these SOCs species, resulting in a high catalytic efficiency for soot oxidation. Effects of tungsten oxide on soot oxidation activity and sulfur poisoning resistance of Pt/Al2O3 catalyst

Abstract:Tungsten oxide was impregnated into the alumina-supported platinum catalyst in order to improve the soot oxidation activity and the resistance to sulfur dioxide. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman, UV-vis spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desulfation, NOx temperature-programmed desorption (NOx-TPD), NO temperature-programmed oxidation (NO-TPO) and soot temperature-programmed oxidation (soot-TPO). The deposition of WOx was found to reduce the availability of Pt active sites on the fresh catalyst. This, as well as the acidic property of tungsten oxide, decreases the NO oxidation and the NOx adsorption abilities. However, a higher soot oxidation activity was achieved on the WOx-modified catalyst in the presence of NO and O2, which is associated with the presence of more platinum in the metallic state by interacting with the electronegative tungsten oxide. The acidity of tungsten oxide and the improved oxidation-resistance of platinum may be critical to the NO ↔ NO2 recycling efficiency and decomposition of surface oxygen complexes. After the sulfur poisoning treatment, fewer sulfates are formed on the WOx-modified catalyst and decompose at lower temperatures. The IR spectra of CO adsorption indicate that less platinum active sites on this catalyst are affected by sulfates and a higher level of Pt dispersion is obtained, which is responsible for the high NO oxidation and soot oxidation activities.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation is used to control carbon monoxide (CO) emissions from industrial exhaust. In this work, The prepared Pta-Fe(OH) x catalysts (x represents the mass fraction of Pt loading (%), a = 0.5, 1 and 2) by the one-pot reduction method exhibited excellent CO catalytic activity, with the Pt2-Fe(OH) x catalyst, 70% and ∼100% CO conversion was achieved at 30°C and 60°C, respectively. In addition, the Pt2-Fe(OH) x catalyst also showed excellent H2O resistance and hydrothermal stability in comparison to the Pt2/Fe(OH) x catalyst prepared by impregnation method. Characterization results showed that the excellent catalytic performance of the catalysts was mainly attributed to the abundant surface oxygen species and Pt0 the presence of H2O, which promoted the catalytic reaction of CO, and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation showed that this was mainly attributed to the catalytic activity of the hydroxyl (-OH) species on Pt2-Fe(OH) x surface, which could easily oxidize CO to -COOH, which could be further decomposed into CO2 and H atoms. This study provides valuable insights into the design of high-efficiency non-precious metal catalysts for CO catalytic oxidation catalysts with high efficiency.
