Abstract:Atmospheric fine particulate matters (PM) pose significant risks to human health through inhalation, especially in the rapidly developing China due to air pollution. The harmful effects of PM are determined not only by its concentrations and hazardous components from diverse sources, but more by their bioavailable fractions actually absorbed by human body. To accurately estimate the inhalation risks of airborne metals, a physiologically based bioaccessibility method combining Simulated Lung Fluid (SLF) extraction and Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) approaches was developed, representing the dissolution of particulate metals into lung fluid and the subsequent lung absorption of free metal cations in solution, respectively. The new method was used to compare the lung bioaccessibility of typical trace metals in PM from three China megacities (Shanghai and Nanjing in the east, Guangzhou in south) during heavy pollution seasons. Generally, the SLF bioaccessibility (%) simulating the solubility of particulate metals in alveolar lung fluid was in order of Ni > Cd > Mn » Pb, while the succeeding DGT bioaccessibility representing labile metal fractions in solution phase absorbed directly by lung was lower and ranked as Ni ∼ Mn > Cd » Pb, thus Ni and Cd posed relatively higher potential risks owing to their high air pollution level and higher pulmonary bioaccessibility. Due to varied particle sources such as coal combustion and traffic emissions, some airborne metal concentrations (Pb, Ni) showed inconsistent spatial patterns with bulk PM concentrations, and also varied bioaccessibility in different regions. The framework for PM pollution risk assessments should be refined by considering both aerosol components and associated pollutants' bioaccessibility.

Abstract:Air pollution is a serious environmental issue. As a key aerosol component, PM2.5 associated toxic trace metals pose significant health risks by inhalation and ingestion, but the evidences and mechanisms were insufficient and not well understood just by their total environmental concentrations. To accurately assess the potential risks of airborne metals, a series of in vitro physiologically based tests with synthetic human lung and gastrointestinal fluids were conducted to assess both the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of various PM2.5 bound metals in the respiratory and digestive systems from both urban and industrial areas of Nanjing city. Moreover, the chemical acellular toxicity test [dithiothreitol (DTT) assay] and source analysis were performed. Generally, the bioaccessibility and bioavailability of investigated metals were element and body fluid dependent. Source oriented metals in PM(2.5 )showed diverse bioaccessibility in different human organs. The PM2.5 induced oxidative potential was mainly contributed by the bioaccessible/bioavailable transition metals such as Fe, Ni and Co from metallurgic dust and traffic emission. Future researches on the toxicological mechanisms of airborne metals incorporating the bioaccessibility, bioavailability and toxicity tests are directions.
Bioaccessibility and exposure assessment of trace metals from urban airborne particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in simulated digestive fluid

Abstract:We describe a batch-extraction with simulated digestive fluid (salivary fluid, gastric fluid and intestinal fluid) to estimate the bioaccessibility of inhaled trace metals (TMs) in particulate matter less than 10 and 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM10 and PM2.5). Concentrations of the assayed TMs (As, Cd, Cr, Ni, Mn, Cu, Zn, Sb, Hg and Pb) were determined in PM10 and PM2.5 samples by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The TMs with the largest soluble fractions for airborne PM collected from winter and summer in saliva were Mn and Sb, respectively; in seasons this became Co in gastric fluid and Cu in intestinal fluid. Clearly, bioaccessibility is strongly dependent on particle size, the component of simulated digestive fluids (e.g., pH, digestive enzymes pepsin and trypsin), and the chemical properties of metal ions. The particle size and seasonal variation affected the inhaled bioaccessible fraction of PM-bound TMs during mucociliary clearance, which transported PM from the tracheal and the bronchial region to the digestive system. This study provides direct evidence for TMs in airborne PM being bioaccessible TMs are likely to possess an enhanced digestive toxic potential due to airborne PM pollution.
Methodological factors influencing inhalation bioaccessibility of metal(loid)s in PM2.5 using simulated lung fluid

Abstract:In this study, methodological factors influencing the dissolution of metal(loid)s in simulated lung fluid (SLF) was assessed in order to develop a standardised method for the assessment of inhalation bioaccessibility in PM2.5. To achieve this aim, the effects of solid to liquid (S/L) ratio (1:100 to 1:5000), agitation (magnetic agitation, occasional shaking, orbital and end-over-end rotation), composition of SLF (artificial lysosomal fluid: ALF; phagolysosomal simulant fluid: PSF) and extraction time (1-120 h) on metal(loid) bioaccessibility were investigated using PM2.5 from three Australian mining/smelting impacted soils and a certified reference material. The results highlighted that SLF composition significantly (p < 0.001) influenced metal(loid) bioaccessibility and that when a S/L ratio of 1:5000 and end-over-end rotation was used, metal(loid) solubility plateaued after approximately 24 h. Additionally, in order to assess the exposure of metal(loid)s via incidental ingestion of surface dust, PM2.5 was subjected to simulated gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) solutions and the results were compared to extraction using SLF. Although As bioaccessibility in SLF (24 h) was significantly lower than in simulated GIT solutions (p < 0.05), Pb bioaccessibility was equal to or significantly higher than that extracted using simulated GIT solutions (p < 0.05).

Abstract:Atmospheric metal-containing particles adversely affect human health because of their physiological toxicity. Mixing state, size, phase, aspect ratio, and sphericity of individual metal-containing particles collected in Hong Kong air in winter are examined through transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Eighteen percent of the sulfate particles have one or more tiny metal inclusions. Size distributions of metal and fly ash particles (or inclusions) with diameters from 15 nm to 2.7 mu m show the same peak at 210 nm. The major metal particles were classified as Fe-rich (e.g., hematite), Zn-rich (e.g., zinc sulfate and zinc oxide), Pb-rich (e.g., anglesite), Mn-rich, and As-rich, which were likely emitted from industries and coal-fired power plants at high temperatures in mainland China. Compared to fly ash and S-rich particles, metal particles display a lower sphericity of 0.51 and a higher aspect ratio of 1.47, which means their shapes are poorly defined. The elemental mapping of individual particles reveal that sulfate areas without metal inclusions also contain minor Fe, Mn, or Zn. Therefore, the internal mixing of metals and acidic constituents likely solubilize metals and modify metal inclusion shapes. Solubilization of metals in airborne particles can extend their toxicity into nontoxicity parts in the particles. The structure of the metal-containing particles may provide important information for assessing health effects of fine sulfate and nitrate particles with metal inclusions in urban areas.
First Long-Term and Near Real-Time Measurement of Atmospheric Trace Elements in Shanghai, China

Abstract:Abstract. Atmospheric trace elements, especially metal species, are an emerging environmental and health concern with poorly constrained on its abundances and sources in Shanghai, the most important industrial megacity in China. Here we continuously performed a one-year (from March 2016 to February 2017) and hourly-resolved measurement of eighteen elements in fine particles (PM2.5) at Shanghai urban center with a Xact multi-metals monitor and several collocated instruments. Independent ICP-MS offline analysis of filter samples was used to validate the performance of Xact that was based on energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis of aerosol deposits on reactive filter tapes. Mass concentrations (mean ± 1σ; ng m-3) determined by Xact ranged from detection limits (nominally 0.1 to 20 ng m-3) to 14.7 µg m-3, with Si as the most abundant element (638.7 ± 1004.5), followed by Fe (406.2 ± 385.2), K (388.6 ± 326.4), Ca (191.5 ± 383.2), Zn (120.3 ± 131.4), Mn (31.7 ± 38.7), Pb (27.2 ± 26.1), Ba (24.2 ± 25.4), V (13.4 ± 14.5), Cu (12.0 ± 11.4), Cd (9.6 ± 3.9), As (6.6 ± 6.6), Ni (6.0 ± 5.4), Cr (4.5 ± 6.1), Ag (3.9 ± 2.6), Se (2.6 ± 2.9), Hg (2.2 ± 1.7), and Au (2.2 ± 3.4). Metal related oxidized species comprised an appreciable fraction of PM2.5 during all seasons, accounting for 8.3 % on average. As a comparison, atmospheric metal pollution level in Shanghai was comparable with other industrialized cities in East Asia but one or two orders magnitude higher than the sites in North America and Europe. Here our high time-resolution observations over long-term period also offer a unique opportunity to provide robust diurnal profiles for each species, which are useful in determining the sources and processes contributing to the fluctuation of atmospheric trace elements. Besides, various mathematical methods and physical evidences were served as criteria to constrain various solutions of source identification. Results showed that atmospheric trace elements pollution in Shanghai was the interplay of local emissions and regional transport, and different sources of metal species generally have different variation patterns associated with different source regions. Specifically, V and Ni were confirmed as the prominent and exclusive tracer of heavy oil combustion from shipping traffic. Fe and Ba were strongly related to brake wear, and exhibited significant correlation with Si and Ca, suggesting that Si and Ca in Shanghai were primarily sourced from road fugitive dust rather than long-distance dust transport and local building construction sites. Stationary combustion of coal was found to be the major source of As, Se, Pb, Cu and K, and the ratio of As / Se was used to infer that coal consumed in Shanghai likely originated from Henan coal fields in Northern China. Cr, Mn and Zn were the mixed result of emissions from stationary combustion coal, ferrous metals production, and nonferrous metals processing. Ag and Cd in Shanghai urban atmosphere were also the mixture of miscellaneous sources. Collectively, our findings in this study provide baseline data with high detail, which are needed for developing effective control strategies to reduce the high risk of acute exposure to atmospheric trace elements in China's megacities.

Abstract:The bioaccessibility and human health risks of heavy metals in PM2.5 and PM10 samples from three functional areas of Shanghai, China including a commercial area (CA), a residential area (RA), and an industrial area (IA), were investigated. Gamble's solution and physiologically based extraction test were employed to simulate human respiratory and digestive system, respectively. Both PM2.5 and PM10 concentration in the three areas exceeded the guideline of WHO, and followed the order of IA>CA≈RA. Zinc and Pb were the most abundant metals with a concentration range of 0.19–0.44 and 0.05–0.42μgm−3, respectively. In respiratory system, heavy metal bioaccessibility for PM2.5 and PM10 varied within the range of 5.3%–71.4% and 4.8%–51.5%, respectively. Heavy metals in RA showed higher bioaccessibility than those in CA and IA in the respiratory system. In digestive system, heavy metal bioaccessibility for PM2.5 and PM10 reached 24.6%–90.9% and 28.5%–88.9% in the gastric phase and was reduced to 8.7%–85.5% and 8.5%–81.8% in the intestinal phase, respectively. The bioaccessibility of heavy metals in CA was highest among three areas in the digestive system. Based on the bioaccessibility analysis, the hazard quotient values of heavy metals in PMs via inhalation exposure were far below 1, the safe level, for both adults and children. However, potential risks via ingestion exposure resulted from Pb existed for children of three areas and for adults of RA as their hazard quotient values could reach up to 11. The obtained results indicated that the air quality in Shanghai need to be improved and the health risks to humans via ingestion exposure to atmospheric Pb must be considered.
Bioaccessibility and Public Health Risk of Heavy Metal(loid)s in the Airborne Particulate Matter of Four Cities in Northern China.

Abstract:Atmospheric coarse particulate matter (PM10) enriched with heavy metal(loid)s could pose potentially significant health risk to humans, while accurate health risk assessment calls for characterization of their bioaccessibility, besides the total contents. The health risk of major toxic heavy metal(loid)s in the PM10 from four large cities in northern China via inhalation was investigated based on their total contents and bioaccessibility. The annual mean concentrations of PM-bound Zn, As, Pb, and Mn in the atmosphere of the four cities were 650, 305, 227, and 177 ng.m(-3), respectively. The levels of heavy metal(loid)s in the PM10 were generally higher in winter but lower in summer in all four cities, which resulted primarily from the emissions associated with coal combustion for district and household heating and the unfavorable meteorological conditions in winter. The bioaccessibility of heavy metal(loid)s in the PM10 ranged from 0.9 to 48.7%, following the general order of Mn > Co > Ni > Cd > Cu > As > Cr > Zn > Pb. Based on their total contents in the PM10, most heavy metal(loid)s posed significant public health risk via inhalation exposure in the four cities. However, after accounting for the bioaccessibility of metal(loid)s, the non-carcinogenic risk of most metal(loid)s was negligible, except for As in the PM10 of Jinzhong, while only the carcinogenic risk posed by Cr and As in the PM10 exceeded the acceptable level. These findings demonstrate the importance of characterizing the bioaccessibility of airborne PM-bound heavy metal(loid)s in health risk assessment and could guide the on-going efforts on reducing the public health risk of PM10 in northern China. Trace Metals in Atmospheric Fine Particles in One Industrial Urban City: Spatial Variations, Sources, and Health Implications

Abstract:Trace metals in PM2.5 were measured at one industrial site and one urban site during September, 2010 in Ji'nan, eastern China. Individual aerosol particles and PM2.5 samples were collected concurrently at both sites. Mass concentrations of eleven trace metals (i.e., Al, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Ba, and Pb) and one metalloid (i.e., As) were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The result shows that mass concentrations of PM2.5 (130 μg/m3) and trace metals (4.03 μg/m3) at the industrial site were 1.3 times and 1.7 times higher than those at the urban site, respectively, indicating that industrial activities nearby the city can emit trace metals into the surrounding atmosphere. Fe concentrations were the highest among all the measured trace metals at both sites, with concentrations of 1.04 μg/m3 at the urban site and 2.41 μg/m3 at the industrial site, respectively. In addition, Pb showed the highest enrichment factors at both sites, suggesting the emissions from anthropogenic activities existed around the city. Correlation coefficient analysis and principal component analysis revealed that Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn were originated from vehicular traffic and industrial emissions at both sites; As, Cr, and part of Pb from coal-fired power plant; Ba and Ti from natural soil. Based on the transmission electron microscopy analysis, we found that most of the trace metals were internally mixed with secondary sulfate/organic particles. These internally mixed trace metals in the urban air may have different toxic abilities compared with externally mixed trace metals.

Abstract:Atmospheric trace elements, especially metal species, are an emerging environmental and health concern with insufficient understanding of their levels and sources in Shanghai, the most important industrial megacity in China. Here we continuously performed a 1 year (from March 2016 to February 2017) and hourly resolved measurement of 18 elements in fine particles (PM2.5) at the Shanghai urban center with an Xact multi-metals monitor and several collocated instruments. Mass concentrations (mean +/- 1 sigma; ng m(-3)) determined by Xact ranged from detection limits (nominally 0.1 to 20 ng m(-3)) to 15 mu g m(-3). Element-related oxidized species comprised an appreciable fraction of PM2.5 during all seasons, accounting for 8.3% on average. As a comparison, the atmospheric elements concentration level in Shanghai was comparable with that in other industrialized cities in East Asia but 1 or 2 orders of magnitude higher than at sites in North America and Europe. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was applied to identify and apportion the sources of the elements in the PM2.5 mass. Five different factors were resolved (notable elements and relative contribution in parentheses): traffic-related (Ca, Fe, Ba, Si; 46 %), shipping (V, Ni; 6 %), nonferrous metal smelting (Ag, Cd, Au; 15 %), coal combustion (As, Se, Hg, Pb; 18 %) and ferrous metal smelting (Cr, Mn, Zn; 15 %). The contribution from the exhaust and non-exhaust vehicle emissions, i.e., the traffic-related factor shows a strong bimodal diurnal profile with average concentration over 2 times higher during the rush hour than during nighttime. The shipping factor was firmly identified because V and Ni, two recognized tracers of shipping emissions, are almost exclusively transported from the East China Sea and their ratio (around 3.2) falls within the variation range of V / Ni ratios in particles emitted from heavy oil combustion. Interestingly, nearly half of the K was derived from coal combustion with high mineral affinity (elements associated with aluminosilicates, carbonates and other minerals in coal ash). The contributions of nonferrous metal smelting to the trace elements are consistent with a newly developed emission inventory. Although the precipitation scavenging effect on the mass concentration of the trace elements varied among different species and sources, precipitation could effectively lower the concentration of the traffic- and coal combustion-related trace elements. Therefore, water spray to simulate natural types of precipitation could be one of the abatement strategies to facilitate the reduction of ambient PM2.5 trace elements in the urban atmosphere. Collectively, our findings in this study provide baseline levels and sources of trace elements with high detail, which are needed for developing effective control strategies to reduce the high risk of acute exposure to atmospheric trace elements in China's megacities.

Abstract:Purpose of reviewAs a priority environmental pollutant, toxic trace metals enriched in atmospheric particulate matters (PMs) pose potential threats to both ecological system and human health. To sufficiently clarify the relationships between airborne trace metals and environmental impacts, considering the chemical speciation and bioaccessibility of trace metals in PMs becomes necessary.Recent findingsIn this mini-review, such recent research progresses were summarized, including the concepts and developed methods for metal fractionation and bioaccessibility evaluation, especially the human body (lung)–related bioaccessible fractions of inhalable particle metals. Abstract:In this work, sulfhydryl (SH) functionalized magnetic covalent organic framework (COF) was synthesized by using 4-aldehyde phenyl butadiyne (DEBD) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) as the monomers and ethanedithiol as the modifier, with the aid of thiol-alkyne "click" reaction. The prepared Fe 3 O 4 @COF TAPB-DEBD @SH exhibited relatively strong magnetism (32.8 emu g −1 ), good stability and selectivity to target analytes with a high sulfhydryl content (0.24 mmol g −1 ). Based on Fe 3 O 4 @COF TAPB-DEBD @SH, a method combining magnetic solid phase extraction with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed for the quantitative analysis of trace metals. Under the optimal conditions, the method merited fast desorption kinetics (<2 min), adsorption kinetics (<20 min), fast phase separation (<1 min), high enrichment factor (100), and the detection limits for Cd, Hg, Pb and Bi were determined to be 1.18, 0.51, 4.91 and 0.39 ng L −1 , respectively. A good resistance to complex matrices was demonstrated for the method in the analysis of soil, atmospheric particles and simulated pulmonary fluids samples. Certified reference materials (coal fly ash GBW08401 and soil GBW07427) were employed to validate the accuracy of the method. Four target metals in the range of 12.9–215 ng L −1 , 0.06–24.6 μg g −1 and 0.52–33.1 ng m −3 were found in local water, soil and atmospheric particulates (PM), respectively. Additionally, artificial lysosome solution and gamble's solution were used to simulate human pulmonary fluid and the bioaccessibility of Cd, Hg, Pb and Bi in PM 2.5 was evaluated to be 58.6–73.1 % and 1.3–7.1 %, respectively.

Abstract:The bioaccessibility and human health risks of As and heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Cd and Mn) in total suspended particulates (TSP) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Nanjing, China were investigated. The average mass concentration ratios of PM2.5 to TSP were 0.61 for Gulou sampling site and 0.50 for Pukou sampling site, respectively. Zn, Pb, Mn and Cu were the most abundant elements among the studied metal(loid)s in both TSP and PM2.5. The results of a simple bioaccessibility extraction test of the studied metal(loid)s varied among elements, with Cd, Zn, Mn, Pb and As showing the higher bioaccessibility. The carcinogenic risks of As, Cd, Co, Cr and Ni in both TSP and PM2.5 via dermal contact and inhalation exposure were within the acceptable level (<1 x 10(-4)) for both children and adults, but there was potential carcinogenic risk posed by Pb via ingestion to children and adults. The hazard index values for all of the studied elements suggested no non-carcinogenic health risks via ingestion and dermal contact, but a potential non-carcinogenic health risk via inhalation to adults. Values of hazard quotient and hazard index indicated the non-carcinogenic risks from the studied metal(loid)s to children via ingestion, dermal contact and inhalation pathways in Nanjing given the present air quality. Metallic elements and Pb isotopes in PM 2.5 in three Chinese typical megacities: spatial distribution and source apportionment.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a serious environmental and health concern in China, particularly during winter. Here, we detected 40 elements in 24 h integrated daily PM(2.5)samples collected in January 2014 from three typical Chinese metropolises (Beijing, Changchun, and Chengdu) to reflect elemental spatial variations, local sources, and regional transport. The measured elemental concentrations in Changchun were 11.1% and 48.4% higher than those in Beijing and Chengdu, respectively. Thus, PM(2.5)from Changchun exhibited high levels and diversity in the elemental profile (characterized by high concentrations of industrial emission elemental markers). The results of elemental ratios and Pb isotopes proved that, except for a coal combustion source, vehicular emissions contributed more to PM(2.5)heavy metals in Beijing than in the other two cities; Changchun PM(2.5)elements received large contributions from industrial sources, including iron and steel manufacturing, and automobile industry. Moreover, crustal dust from long-range transport of regional air masses from the northwest regions of China played a crucial role in determining elemental levels in Beijing and Changchun, accounting for more than 50% of source intensity. However, a specific dominant source was not determined in Chengdu; the contribution of anthropogenic dust, mainly from construction activities, needs to be paid attention in Chengdu eastern area. This study contributed to enhancing our understanding of elemental spatial distribution characteristics and sources and to setting more judicious standards and strategies for PM(2.5)bound heavy metals in China.

Abstract:Water-soluble metals exert a significant influence on human and ecosystem health. In this study, a comprehensive investigation was undertaken to elucidate the solubilities of metals in PM 2.5 and potential influencing factors during the dry season of 2019–2020 in urban Guangzhou, South China. The observed average solubility was <20 % for Al, Fe, Sn, and Ti; 20–40 % for V, Cr, Sb, Pb, and Ni; 40–60 % for Ba and Cu; and 60–80 % for Zn, As, Se, Cd, and Mn. Metals (Al, Ti, and Fe) originated from crustal sources (e.g., soil dust) have much lower solubilities than those (Mn, Zn, As, Se, Cd, and Ba) from fossil fuel combustion sources (e.g., traffic emission, coal combustion), suggesting the dominant role the metal sources played on solubility. Enhanced solubilities of Cu, As, Se, Cd, Sn, Sb, and Pb were associated with aerosol acidity, while those of V, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, and Ba were linked to organic acid complexation. For the three crustal metals, the solubilities of Al and Ti primarily depended on aerosol acidity, whereas the solubility of Fe depended on both aerosol acidity under pH 2 conditions. These findings underscore the primary influence of inherent properties of the metals on their solubility and reveal the varying impacts of atmospheric physicochemical processes, with changes in their solubilities being <10 % for Cd, Sn, Sb, and Pb, 10–20 % for Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni, and Ba, and 20–30 % for As, Se, and Zn.

Abstract:Trace metal distributions are of relevance to understand sources of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), PM2.5-related health effects, and atmospheric chemistry. However, knowledge of trace metal distributions is lacking due to limited ground-based measurements and model simulations. This study develops a simulation of 12 trace metal concentrations (Si, Ca, Al, Fe, Ti, Mn, K, Mg, As, Cd, Ni and Pb) over continental North America for 2013 using the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model. Evaluation of modeled trace metal concentrations with observations indicates a spatial consistency within a factor of 2. The spatial distribution of trace metal concentrations reflects their primary emission sources. Crustal element (Si, Ca, Al, Fe, Ti, Mn, K) concentrations are enhanced over the central US from anthropogenic fugitive dust and over the southwestern U.S. due to natural mineral dust. Heavy metal (As, Cd, Ni and Pb) concentrations are high over the eastern U.S. from industry. K is abundant in the southeast from biomass burning. High concentrations of Mg are observed along the coast from sea spray. The spatial pattern of PM2.5 mass is most strongly correlated with Pb, Ni, As and K due to their signature emission sources. Challenges remain in accurately simulating observed trace metal concentrations. Halving anthropogenic fugitive dust emissions in the 2011 National Air Toxic Assessment (NATA) inventory and doubling natural dust emissions in the default GEOS-Chem simulation was necessary to reduce biases in crustal element concentrations. A fivefold increase of anthropogenic emissions of As and Pb was necessary in the NATA inventory to reduce the national-scale bias versus observations by more than 80%, potentially reflecting missing sources.

Abstract:The bioaccessibility of metal(loid)s in ambient particulate matter (PM) has been recently used to represent the risk of inhalation exposure. Nevertheless, different methodological factors affect the bioaccessibility values; among these, the type and composition of surrogate biological fluids and the liquid to solid ratio have been revealed to be the most important. To better understand how these methodological aspects affect the bioaccessibility, a reference material corresponding to urban dust (SRM1648a) was contacted with synthetic biological fluids commonly used in the literature representing surrogate fluids that may interact with fine (Gamble's solutions, artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF)) and coarse particles (gastric fluid), for liquid to solid (L/S) ratios ranging from 500 to 20,000. Visual MINTEQ 3.1. was used to enhance the discussion on how the solubility of metals in the leaching solution depends on the composition of the simulated fluids and the speciation of metals. The results obtained indicate that a small change in the composition of Gamble's solution (the presence of glycine) may increase significantly the bioaccessibility at a L/S ratio of 5,000. The highest bioaccessibility of most of the studied metal(loid)s at a L/S ratio of 5,000 was found for ALF fluid. The study of the effect of the L/S ratio showed that metal(loid)s bioaccessibility in Gamble's fluid increased logarithmically with increasing L/S ratio, while it remained practically constant in ALF and gastric fluid. This different behavior is explained assuming that the leaching of metal(loid)s in Gamble's solution is solubility-controlled, while in ALF and gastric fluid is availability-controlled.

Abstract:In this study, an in vitro method was used to simulate lung fluids [Artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF) and Gamble's solution (GS)] to assess how the bioaccessibility of rare earth elements (REEs) in airborne particulate matter (PM) affects human health. Airborne PM samples (PM10 and PM2.5) were collected in Daqing in Northeast China. The bioaccessible proportions determined for REEs in PM10 and PM2.5 had high variability, which can be attributable to the heterogenic feature of airborne PM and its components, as well as sampling time. Overall, the bioaccessiblity of the REEs in the airborne PM samples was time-dependent. The bioaccessiblity of the REEs varied in PM with different sizes, and it was an order of magnitude higher in ALF than in GS. During both heavy and light pollution, the bioaccessiblity of the REEs in PM2.5 was higher than in PM10 after 24 h of ALF extraction, whereas bioaccessiblity of the REEs in GS followed the opposite trend. The REEs associated with airborne PM had much greater bioaccessiblity as the exposure time increased. The results of this study emphasize the necessity of conducting bioaccessibility experiments with field samples for the proper evaluation of human health risks.

Abstract:This study examines size-resolved heavy metal data for particles sampled near an urban site affected by non-ferrous metal smelting in China with a focus on how particle sizes impact regional respiratory deposition behavior. Particles with aerodynamic diameters between 0.43 and 9 μm were collected during winter haze episodes from December 2011 to January 2012. The results showed that concentrations of individual trace elements ranged from ∼10−2–∼104 ng/m3. Mass size distributions exhibit that Cu, Zn, As, Se, Ag, Cd, TI, and Pb have unimodal peak in fine particles range (<2.1 μm); Al, Ti, Fe, Sr, Cr, Co, Ni, Mo, and U have unimodal peak in coarse range (>2.1 μm), and Be, Na, Mg, Ca, Ba, Th, V, Mn, Sn, Sb, and K have bimodal profiles with a dominant peak in the fine range and a smaller peak in the coarse range. The total deposition fluxes of trace elements were estimated at 2.1 × 10−2 – 4.1 × 103 ng/h by the MPPD model, and the region with the highest contribution was the head region (42% ± 13%), followed by the tracheobronchial region (11% ± 3%) and pulmonary region (6% ± 1%). The daily intake of individual element for humans occurs via three main exposure pathways: ingestion (2.3 × 10−4 mg/kg/day), dermal contact (2.3 × 10−5 mg/kg/day), and inhalation (9.0 × 10−6 mg/kg/day). A further health risk assessment revealed that the risk values for humans were all above the guidelines of the hazard quotient (1) and cancer risk (10−6), indicating that there are potential non-cancer effects and cancer risks in this area.

Abstract:Atmospheric trace metals are a key component of particulate matter and significantly influence the atmospheric process and human health. The dissolved fraction of trace metals represents their bioavailability and exhibits high chemical activity. However, the optimum measurement method for detecting the soluble fraction of trace metals is still undetermined. The impact of variations in pollution on the soluble fraction is largely unrevealed. Therefore, in this work, a one-month field observation was conducted in Central China and different extraction solvents were used to determine the proper measurement method for the soluble fraction of trace metals and investigate the variation pattern under different pollution conditions. The findings show that solvents with acidity near that of aerosol water can better reflect the actual soluble fraction of trace metals in fine particulate matter. The soluble fraction of trace metals tends to increase with pollution level increased, demonstrating unexpectedly high health risks and chemical activity under heavy haze conditions. Our results indicate that remediation and trace metal pollution control are urgently needed.
