Abstract:With the rapid development of network applications, the Internet has evolved from a content-based communication infrastructure to a social-based community network. The emerging applications require the Internet to preserve not only the existing advantages of simplicity and scalability, but also demand varying amounts of capability, availability, reliability, flexibility, and differentiated quality of service. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to bridge the gap between these applications and the IP networks which were originally designed and developed for supporting one-size-fits-all functionality. An efficient solution is to build a virtual network on top of a generic IP transport layer in order to provide additional functionality and flexibility. The content delivery networks technique is one of the successful virtual networks rapidly developed over the last decade with the specific advantage of optimizing the Internet. Nowadays, the CDN has become one of the most important parts of the Internet architecture for content distribution. In this article we highlight the innovative technologies in CDNs and present their evolution triggered by ever newer emerging applications. By presenting in-depth discussion about the architecture, challenges, and applications of CDNs, we demonstrate their importance for the future Internet.

Abstract:SummaryOver the past decade, content delivery networks (CDNs) have attracted substantial Internet traffic and improved quality of experience for Internet users. However, the evolution of the Internet ecosystem, which is driven by underlying economic incentives and ever emerging technologies, posts great challenges to the existing commercial CDNs (CCDNs). Thoroughly understanding the CDN industry from different aspects including market choice, technology, performance, tendency and infrastructure is indispensable to future Internet. In this paper, we conduct the first comprehensive study of China's CDNs using continuous, at‐scale, content‐driven measurements. Based on the massive amount of measurement data with multidimensional properties, we demystify the CCDNs in China and answer two important questions: (1) what is the development trend of CCDNs in China and (2) what are their unique characteristics. Abstract:Content delivery networks (CDNs) can be viewed as application-specific overlay networks that make web caching an infrastructure service accessible to any content provider. As the Internet continues to evolve with increasing diversity and heterogeneity, we see a growing demand for extending the capabilities of network intermediaries to provide additional services such as content adaptation, personalization, watermarking and location-aware data insertion.A content services network (CSN) is proposed in this paper to make content transformation and processing an infrastructure service accessible to its subscribers. One can think of CSN as another layer of network infrastructure built around CDNs. This layer interacts collaboratively with user-agents, content servers, and other network intermediaries including ISPs' caching proxies and CDNs' surrogates in the content delivery process to provide value-added services. Furthermore, a CSN provides network resources that are used as a 'service' distribution channel for value-added services providers to make their applications an infrastructure service.To demonstrate the utility of our proposed CSN model, we describe the prototype implementation of a video segmentation and keyframe selection system as an infrastructure service that can be used by content providers or end users to enhance the way video is delivered over the Internet.

Abstract:CDNs improve network performance and offer fast and reliable applications and services by distributing content to cache servers located close to users. The Web's growth has transformed communications and business services such that speed, accuracy, and availability of network-delivered content has become absolutely critical - both on their own terms and in terms of measuring Web performance. Proxy servers partially address the need for rapid content delivery by providing multiple clients with a shared cache location. In this context, if a requested object exists in a cache (and the cached version has not expired), clients get a cached copy, which typically reduces delivery time. CDNs act as trusted overlay networks that offer high-performance delivery of common Web objects, static data, and rich multimedia content by distributing content load among servers that are close to the clients. CDN benefits include reduced origin server load, reduced latency for end users, and increased throughput. CDNs can also improve Web scalability and disperse flash-crowd events. Here we offer an overview of the CDN architecture and popular CDN service providers.

Abstract:Service providers often geographically distribute their Web servers' facilities to improve performance, reliability, and scalability. Content delivery networks, which first evolved in 1998, replicate content over several mirrored Web servers, strategically placed at various locations to deal with flash crowds and to enhance response time. A CDN improves network performance by maximizing bandwidth, improving accessibility, and maintaining correctness through content replication. Unfortunately, although many commercial CDN providers exist, they don't cooperate in delivering content to end users in a scalable manner. In addition, content providers typically subscribe to one CDN provider and thus can't use multiple CDNs at the same time. Such a closed, noncooperative model results in "islands" of CDNs. We present a model for an open, scalable, and service-oriented architecture (SOA)-based system. This system helps to create open content and service delivery networks (CSDNs) that scale well and can share resources with other CSDNs through cooperation and coordination, thus overcoming the island CDN problem

Abstract:With the explosive increase in Internet Contents, the Internet usage is shifting from host-to-host model to content dissemination model, e.g. video content accounts for the majority of Internet traffics. ISPs, content providers and other third parties have already deployed CDNs (content delivery networks) to improve user experience. However, as an ad-hoc solution to the content dissemination problem, CDNs still face big challenges, such as complicated control plane. With a fundamental change in network architecture, CCN (content centric network) incorporates content delivery functions in its network layer, and appears to be a most promising solution to this problem. In this paper, we construct comparable CDN and CCN testbeds separately and systematically compare the content delivery of CDN and CCN.

Abstract:Over the last few decades,Internet has drawn people from all over the world,mainly driven by the emergence of the Web(World Wide Web,WWW).With the rapid growth of Web sites and also the scale of Internet,the QoS(Quality of Service)requirements of content transportation of Web sites have been more and more critical.Content Delivery/Distribution Networks(CDN)is proved to be an efficient way to improve the performance of network and accele-rate the network operation and it has become one of the essential kernel technologies of Internet within the last decade.This paper categorized the evolution process of CDN into three stages based on the changes of its architectures.The first generation of Cache-assisted CDN alleviated the load burden on source by deploying surrogates(cache servers)to the edge of networks which is closer to the clients.The second generation built highway to guarantee the bandwidth between surrogates by using fiber links,so called Fiber-assisted CDN.The third generation of Peer-assisted CDN utilized the extra resource of clients through the cutting edge Peer-to-Peer(P2P)technology,to elevate the scalability and reduce the cost.This paper described the research and development of CDN technologies driven by the requirements of Internet.The future trend of CDN was also discussed.

Thus this work enhances current CDN with NDN, here dubbed Named Content Delivery Network, or nCDN. In nCDN, CDN itself focuses on services such as accounting, data analysis etc; NDN runs over IP and takes charge of content routing and delivery. nCDN is more adaptive to the dynamic of the Internet and improves the performance, especially in a scenario where content copies are hosted in several hosts. nCDN makes it easier to implement optimization solutions and CDN Interconnecting. Our simulations demonstrate that nCDN is better than traditional CDN on almost all aspects, including the scalability, reliability, and QoS.

Abstract:The Content Delivery Network (CDN) has become an important element in the Internet, which uses applicationlayer caches to improve user experience and reduce network/server load. However, CDNs face efficiency issues due to the following two reasons: 1) they are not aware of the network status, and 2) the underlying location-centric network (IP) does not understand content. At the same time, the Information-Centric Network (ICN) has been developed to address these issues: they use content identities as routing labels and support functions such as multi-source, multicast and in-network caching. While these in-network caches can help improve the content delivery performance, they are unaware of applicationspecific characteristics like policy and popularity. As a result, we believe application-layer CDN solutions are still beneficial in ICN. They can take advantage of ICN content delivery capabilities while having access to application-level details, therefore getting the best from both worlds. In this paper, we propose a CDN architecture over Mobility-First - a representative example of ICN - to show the benefit of such a design. The solution uses self-certifying names that can enable efficient content validation in CDNs, an applicationlayer CDN design that can maximize the utility of caches, and a pushing mechanism that allows content providers cache content proactively. Through a prototype, we show the feasibility and efficiency of the architecture.

Abstract:A content delivery network (CDN) is a distributed infrastructure to deliver digital contents to end users with high performance. CDNs are critical to provide and protect the availability of Internet contents. However, adversaries can not only evade the CDN protection but also weaponize CDN resources to mount more sophisticated attacks. In this paper, we provide the first survey on CDN security. We categorize CDN security challenges per CDN infrastructure components, discuss possible countermeasures and their effectiveness, and delineate future research directions. This paper aims to highlight the state of CDN security and identify important research challenges in this area.

Abstract:In order to fully utilize the stable edge transmission capability of CDN and the scalable last-mile transmission capability of P2P, while at the same time avoiding ISP-unfriendly policies and unlimited usage of P2P delivery, some researches have begun focusing on CDN-P2P-hybrid architecture and ISP-friendly P2P content delivery technology in recent years. In this paper, we first survey CDN-P2P-hybrid architecture technology, including current industry efforts and academic efforts in this field. Second, we make comparisons between CDN and P2P. And then we explore and analyze main issues, including overlay route hybrid issues, and playing buffer hybrid issues. After that we focus on CDN-P2P-hybrid model analysis and design, we compare the tightly-coupled hybrid model with the loosely-coupled hybrid model, and we propose that there are some main common models which need further study. At last, we analyze the prospective research direction and propose our future work.

Abstract:There is an unprecedented trend that content providers (CPs) are building their own content delivery networks (CDNs) to provide a variety of content services to their users. By exploiting powerful CP-level information in content distribution, these CP-built CDNs open up a whole new design space and are changing the content delivery landscape. In this paper, we adopt a measurement-based approach to understanding why, how, and how much CP-level intelligences can help content delivery. We first present a measurement study of the CDN built by Tencent, a largest content provider based in China. We observe new characteristics and trends in content delivery which pose great challenges to the conventional content delivery paradigm and motivate the proposal of CPCDN, a CDN powered by CP-aware information. We then reveal the benefits obtained by exploiting two indispensable CP-level intelligences, namely context intelligence and user intelligence, in content delivery. Inspired by the insights learnt from the measurement studies, we systematically explore the design space of CPCDN and present the novel architecture and algorithms to address the new content delivery challenges that have arisen. Our results not only demonstrate the potential of CPCDN in pushing content delivery performance to the next level, but also identify new research problems calling for further investigation.

Abstract:A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is a dynamic and complex service system. It causes a huge amount of traffic on the network infrastructure of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Oftentimes, CDN providers and ISPs struggle to find an efficient and appropriate way to cooperate for mutual benefits. This challenge is key to push the quality of service (QoS) for the end-user. We model, simulate, and optimize the behavior of a CDN to provide cooperative solutions and to improve the QoS. Therefor, we determine reasonable server locations, balance the amount of servers and improve the user assignments to the servers. These aspects influence run time effects like caching at the server, response time and network load at specific links. Especially, user request history and profiles are considered to improve the overall performance. Since we consider multiple objectives, we aim to provide a diverse set of pareto optimal solutions using simulation based optimization.

Abstract:Content Delivery Network (CDN) is an effective solution to offer reliable and efficient content provisioning across the Internet. In order to ensure the service experience, it is critical to adopt efficient routing and server selection techniques in CDN. However, traditional CDN is unable to possess global knowledge of whole network and therefore lacks the ability to dynamically control routing and server selection in real time. Software Defined Network (SDN) is a novel technology that allows decoupling control plane and data plane to offer flexible and centralized management. Implementing CDN with SDN provides an approach to monitor real-time network status and make intelligent decisions timely. This paper presents a novel intelligent SDN-based CDN architecture and propose a Model Predictive Control (MPC)-based algorithm to determine routing path and server selection jointly. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves superior performance in terms of both response time and bandwidth satisfaction.

Abstract:Content delivery networks (CDNs) provide a large number of caches and storage devices at the edge of network to push content closer to the user. To cope with the growing diversity and heterogeneity of the Internet, these edge nodes offer a natural place to extend the capability of network intermediaries for content-oriented processing such as content adaptation for small devices, personalization, and location-aware data insertion. In this paper, we present our investigation on developing a service overlay network out top of CDNs for delivering content-oriented web services. Our goal is to make the rich content services part of the Internet infrastructure services accessible to content providers and content consumers. A prototype system is reported in the paper, and the experimental results of deploying this system in our corporate network are also discussed.

Abstract:Content distribution networks (CDNs) using cloud resources such as storage and compute have started to emerge. Unlike traditional CDNs hosted on private data centers, cloud-based CDNs take advantage of the geographical availability and the pay-as-you-go model of cloud platforms. The Cloud-based CDNs (CCDNs) promote content-delivery-as-a-service cloud model. Though CDNs and CCDNs share similar functionalities, introduction of cloud impose additional challenges that have to be addressed for a successful CCDN deployment. Several papers have tried to address the issues and challenges around CDN with varying degree of success. However, to the best of our knowledge there is no clear articulation of issues and challenges problems within the context of cloud-based CDNs. Hence, this paper aims to identify the open challenges in cloud-based CDNs. In this regard, we present an overview of cloud-based CDN followed by a detailed discussion on open challenges and research dimensions. We present a state-of-the-art survey on current commercial and research/academic CCDNs. Finally, we present a comprehensive analysis of current CCDNs against the identified research dimensions.

Abstract:CDN (content distributed/delivery network) is a network architecture based on Web. It can deliver Web contents more quickly and more efficiently. By making use of caching, duplication, load balancing and user request redirection, CDN constructs a large-scale content distributed network upon Internet. CDN pushes information resources to network edges to provideend users with the best and most available servers to access various contents. CDN is quite a new system of techniques and developing rapidly. It must solve and improve some key problems. What's more important is that we lack a standard to evaluate the performance of CDN and its relative products. CERNET provides us a favorable platform to measure CDN performance, for we can inspect those CDN techniques from inside the network and from the point of view of ISP, ICP and end users, so as to get useful information for deploying and developing a CDN. A brief view of reasons for CDN's enhancing network performance is firstintroduced in this paper, followed by several metrics, their definitions and significance to evaluate a CDN's performance. Some measurement results are covered to evaluate a CDN's application on CERNET as the central part. In addition, some fundamental comments on CDN and its measurement are given.
