Abstract:Prediction of fractional flow in fractal porous medium is important for reservoir engineering and chemical engineering as well as hydrology. A physical conceptual fractional flow model of transient two-phase flow is developed in fractal porous medium based on the fractal characteristics of pore-size distribution and on the approximation that porous medium consist of a bundle of tortuous capillaries. The analytical expression for fractional flow for wetting phase is presented, and the proposed expression is the function of structural parameters (such as tortuosity fractal dimension, pore fractal dimension, maximum and minimum diameters of capillaries) and fluid properties (such as contact angle, viscosity and interfacial tension) in fractal porous medium. The sensitive parameters that influence fractional flow and its derivative are formulated, and their impacts on fractional flow are discussed.

Abstract:The leakage of fluid always emerges from the contact seal area. This phenomenon could be described by fractal porous media theory, in which the region of contact surfaces could be regarded as a porous medium. And Darcy percolation theory has been introduced to analyze the traditional leakage of the area. This paper constructs a fractal model for fluid leak rates of contact rough surfaces under changing fluid pressures. The variation on the pore number, the porosity, the fractal dimensions and the fluid permeability with the change of the liquid pressure is presented in the form of function relationship. The new model is in better agreement with the experiment results compared with the traditional one.

Abstract:A new model for gas–water two-immiscible-phase transport in a fractal-like porous medium is developed based on the assumptions that the porous medium consists of a bundle of non-interconnected tortuous capillaries and that the size distribution of the capillaries follows a power law relationship when both the capillary pressure and the compressibility of gas are considered. The model is a function of the structural parameters of the porous medium and the parameters of the fluid properties. The new model does not contain empirical constants, and every parameter has a clear physical meaning. The relative permeability predicted by the proposed model is compared with experimental data, and the comparison results are in rational agreement. Finally, the parameters influencing the relative permeability are explored.

Abstract:A fractal model for gas diffusivity in porous media is derived by using fractal theory and by considering rarefied gas effect in micro-/nano-channels/capillaries. The proposed gas diffusivity model is expressed as a function of micro-structural parameters (the fractal dimensions for pore area and for tortuosity of tortuous capillaries, porosity and pore sizes) of porous media. The effects of parameters such as porosity, microstructures of porous media and fractal dimensions on gas diffusivity are analyzed. The effective diffusivities predicted by the present fractal model are compared with the available experimental data, and a fair agreement between them is found when porosity is less than about 0.70.

Abstract:There often exists some gas leakage from defects/micro-pores between two contacting surfaces even they are welded together, which have been shown to be usually rough and fractal. In this work, the region between two contacting surfaces is considered as a porous medium, and then a fractal model for gaseous leak rate through the contacting surfaces under non-isothermal condition is derived based on the Darcy law and diffusion theory. The proposed model for the pressure-driven gas flow flux affected by temperature is expressed as a function of porosity, the fractal dimensions and temperature. Every parameter in the proposed model has clear physical meaning. The model predictions are compared with the available experimental data, and good agreement between them is obtained.

Abstract:The dual-porosity medium, i.e., a matrix porous medium coupled with fractured networks, extensively exists in fissured rocks, natural gas reservoirs, and other natural underground reservoirs or in resolving subsurface contamination problems. This work investigates gas permeability through matrix porous media embedded with randomly distributed fractal-like tree networks. The analytical expression for gas permeability in dual-porosity media is derived based on both the pore size of matrix and the mother channel diameter of embedded fractal-like tree networks having fractal distribution. It is found that gas permeability is a function of structural parameters (the fractal dimensions for pore area and tortuous capillaries, porosity and the maximum diameter of matrix, the length ratio, the diameter ratio, the branching levels and angle of the embedded networks) for dual-porosity media. The proposed model does not contain any empirical constant. The model predictions are compared with the available experimental data and simulating results, a fair agreement among them is found. The influences of geometrical parameters on the gas permeability in the media are also analyzed.

Abstract:A new gas transport model for fractal-like tight porous media is proposed by simultaneously considering the microstructural complexity of real porous media, the compressibility of gas, and the gas slippage effect. This model clarifies the gas transport mechanisms in porous media: the total gas flow volume is governed by the weighted addition of viscous flow and slippage flow, and the distribution weighting factor depends on the capillary diameter and the mean free path of the gas. Based on the proposed model, a new permeability model was derived for gas transport in fractal-like tight porous media. The new permeability model does not have any empirical constants, and every parameter in the model has clear physical meaning. The predictions from the model were then compared with experimental data to show that the model is valid. Furthermore, the parameters influencing gas permeability were analyzed.

Abstract:Hydraulic tortuosity is one of the key parameters for evaluating effective transport properties of natural and artificial porous media. A pore-scale model is developed for fluid flow through porous media based on fractal geometry, and a novel analytical tortuosity–porosity correlation is presented. Numerical simulations are also performed on two-dimensional Sierpinski carpet model. The proposed fractal model is validated by comparison with numerical results and available experimental data. Results show that hydraulic tortuosity depends on both statistical and morphological characteristics of porous media. The exponents for the scaling law between tortuosity and porosity depend on pore size distribution and tortuous fractal dimension. It has been found that hydraulic tortuosity indicates evident anisotropy for asymmetrical particle arrangements under the same statistical characteristics of porous media. The present work may be helpful to understand the transport mechanisms of porous materials and provide guidelines for the development of oil and gas reservoir, water resource and chemical engineering, etc.

Abstract:The study of fluid diffusion is an important aspect of heat and mass transfer of the porous fibrous materials. This work established a fractal model for the diffusion of power-law fluids in porous fibrous materials by considering the pore size distribution and the tortuosity of the capillary. Adopting the Darcy's law and the Hagen-Poiseuille's law, the diffusion coefficient of power-law fluids is derived as a function of the tortuosity fractal dimension, the pore size fractal dimension and the flow behavior index, in which the phase transition and the adsorption effect of fiber as well as the influence of gas diffusion and temperature change are taken into consideration. And the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot (W-M) function is applied to manifest the detailed fractal characters of the pores. Focusing on an analytical expression of the diffusion of power-law fluids in porous fibrous materials, the changes of liquid volume fraction, gas concentration and temperature distribution subjected to the specification initial and boundary conditions are simulated numerically. The test of this approach on the height of fluids when the bottom of cotton fabrics is immersed in the water display the clear diffusion of fluid in fiber. Our preliminary results indicate the important roles that the porosity and flow behavior index play in the fluids transfer in the porous fibrous materials: the fluids with lower power law index rise higher heights and diffuse more rapidly, meanwhile, the height increases with the porosity. Abstract:Gas diffusion in char pores or other fractal pores is anomalous diffusion that does not follow Fick's diffusion law. The authors studied gas diffusion in fractal porous media by simulating molecular movements in porous models. Through analyzing numerical results, gas diffusion equations in fractal pores have been presented. The effects of geometrical structures on pore diffusion can be described by three parameters: porosity, specific surface area, and fractal dimension. With these three parameters, the diffusion coefficient can be calculated. The steady-state diffusion equation is quantitatively determined so that it can be potentially used in modeling char combustion or other practical applications.

Abstract:A fractal analysis of permeability for power-law fluids in porous media is presented based on the fractal characters of pore size distributions and tortuous flow paths/streamlines in the media. The proposed permeability model for power-law fluids in porous media is expressed as a function of the fractal dimensions of pore size distributions and tortuous flow paths/streamlines, porosity and microstructural parameters, as well as power exponent, and there is no empirical constant in the proposed model and every parameter in the model has clear physical meaning. The results predicted by the present fractal permeability model show that the model predictions (as the power exponent is 1) are in agreement with the available experimental data, and the predicted permeabilities (as the power exponent is not equal to 1) increase with the power exponent, which is also consistent with the physical situation.

Abstract:In this paper, a relative permeability prediction method considering the effects of capillary pressure and threshold pressure gradient in a low permeability fractal porous medium is established and analyzed based on the fractal approximation model that porous medium consist of a bundle of tortuous capillaries. With this method, every parameter has clear physical meaning without empirical constants, and the model's predictions have a good agreement with experimental data. In addition to this, it makes some discussions that how the characteristic parameters (such as tortuosity fractal dimension, pore fractal dimension, ratio of minimum-maximum capillaries diameters and threshold pressure gradient) influence the relative permeability. This study may be conducible to a better understanding of the mechanism for transient two-phase flow in the low permeability fractal porous medium.

Abstract:In this paper, the capillary is divided into several regions, and the effective pore radius is proposed. The relationship between the effective hole radius and the maximum radius is analyzed. The fractal models of fractal flow rate, average velocity and effective permeability of power-law fluid flow in fractal soil composed of circular cross section capillaries are derived. The effects of different power exponent, viscosity coefficient and fractal dimension on the average flow velocity and effective permeability model are analyzed, and the comparative analysis of different sections is carried out. The reasonable calculation results of the fractal model given in this paper verify the correctness of the model. The introduction of the effective pore radius concept and the derivation of fractal models have advanced our ability to characterize and predict flow behavior. We anticipate that these findings will stimulate further research and practical applications in various domains, benefiting both scientific knowledge and technological advancements.

Abstract:The pore structures and connections in unconventional oil and gas resources are very complex, the size of which may vary several orders of magnitude from millimeter to nanometer.And gas transport process depends on both microstructure characteristics and gas properties in the multiscale porous media.As gas transport in multiscale porous media may involve multiple transport mechanisms such as no-slip and slip flow, transition flow, Knudsen and molecular diffusion, it is difficult to characterize the gas transport with continuum theory.Since it has been proven that natural pore structures indicate fractal scaling laws, fractal geometry is employed in this study to model the multiscale pore structures.The fractal dimensions are introduced to characterize the pore size distribution and tortuous flow path, and a mesoscopic model is developed to study the gas transport in multiscale porous media.The effective permeability and diffusion coefficient of multiscale porous media are derived and presented, and the effect of microstructures and gas properties on the equivalent transport properties is also discussed.This study may be helpful for the development of seepage theory and understanding the output mechanisms of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs.

Abstract:The investigation of gas transport in fractured porous media is essential in most petroleum and chemical engineering. In this paper, an apparent gas permeability model for real gas flow in fractured porous media is derived with adequate consideration of real gas effect, the roughness of fracture surface, and Knudsen diffusion based on the fractal theory. The fractal apparent gas permeability model is obtained to be a function of micro-structural parameters of fractured porous media, relative roughness, the pressure, the temperature, and the properties of gas. The predictions from the apparent gas permeability model based on the fractal theory match well with the published permeability model and experimental data, which verifies the rationality of the present fractal apparent gas permeability model.
