Abstract:The alpha-selenenylation reactions of ketones with PhSeCl can be directly catalyzed by some amines, such as cinchonidine, L-proline or 1,2-cyclohexanediamine. Several alpha-phenylselenoketones were obtained with high yields by such a simple and efficient procedure.

Abstract:[reaction: see text] A new catalytic method for direct alpha-selenenylation reactions of aldehydes and ketones has been developed. The results of exploratory studies have demonstrated that L-prolinamide is an effective catalyst for alpha-selenenylation reactions of aldehydes, whereas pyrrolidine trifluoromethanesulfonamide efficiently promotes reactions of ketones. Under optimized reaction conditions, using N-(phenylseleno)phthalimide as the selenenylation reagent in CH2Cl2 in the presence of L-prolinamide (2 mol %) or pyrrolidine trifluoromethanesulfonamide (10 mol %), a variety of aldehydes and ketones undergo this process to generate alpha-selenenylation products in high yields. Mechanistic insight into the L-proline and L-prolinamide catalyzed alpha-selenenylation reactions of aldehydes with N-(phenylseleno)phthalimide has come from theoretical studies employing ab initio methods and density functional theory. The results reveal that (1) the rate-limiting step of the process involves attack of the enamine intermediate at selenium in N-(phenylseleno)phthalimide and (2) the energy of the transition state for the reaction catalyzed by prolinamide is lower than that promoted by proline. This result is consistent with experimental observations. The role of hydrogen bond interactions in stabilizing the transition states for this process is also discussed.

Abstract:An expeditious method to access 2-aminobenzoxazoles and 2-aminobenzothiazoles from various substituted 2-aminophenols and 2-aminothiophenols, respectively, with isoselenocyanates in a one pot procedure is reported. Elemental Se precipitates nearly quantitatively in the reaction without any deselenizing agent and it can be reused. A possible mechanism for the formation of the target products is proposed.

Abstract:We have previously reported an efficient synthesis of beta-phenylselenium-substituted butenolides via electrophilic cyclization of 2,3-allenoates with PhSeCl in aqueous MeCN. However, when 2,3-allenoates were treated with PhSeCl in MeCN, 3-phenylseleno-4-oxo-2(E)-alkenoates were formed unexpectedly. The addition of Li2CO3 improved the yield and the selectivity of the reaction. A possible mechanism involving a decomposition of selenate esters was proposed.

Abstract:Herein, we reported an efficient and straightforward method to realize desaturated β-C(sp3)-H sulfonylation and phosphonylation of cyclic amines driven by electrochemistry using catalytic amounts of CP2Fe as the redox mediator. This protocol which had good functional group compatibility, provided the desired enaminyl sulfone and enaminyl phosphine oxide products with high chemo- and regio-selectivity under mild conditions. Several mechanistic studies have suggested that cyclic amines underwent multiple single-electron oxidation and deprotonation processes, followed by a capture step involving either a sulfonyl radical or a phosphonyl radical, ultimately leading to the desired products.

Abstract:Antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GPx) decomposes hydroperoxides by utilizing the different redox chemistry of the selenium and sulfur. Here, we report a Se-catalysed para-amination of phenols while, in contrast, the reactions with sulfur donors are stoichiometric. A catalytic amount of phenylselenyl bromide smoothly converts N-aryloxyacetamides to N-acetyl p-aminophenols. When the para position was substituted (for example, with tyrosine), the dearomatization 4,4-disubstituted cyclodienone products were obtained. A combination of experimental and computational studies was conducted and suggested the weaker Se−N bond plays a key role in the completion of the catalytic cycle. Our method extends the selenium-catalysed processes to the functionalisation of aromatic compounds. Finally, we demonstrated the mild nature of the para-amination reaction by generating an AIEgen 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT) product in a fluorogenic fashion in a PBS buffer.

Abstract:A facile one-pot, phosgene-free synthesis of N-phenylcarbamates is demonstrated. Catalyzed by selenium, oxidative carbonylation of aniline with alcohols in the presence of carbon monoxide and oxygen affords the corresponding N-phenylcarbamates, mostly in fair to good yields. Selenium can be easily recovered because of its phase-transfer catalysis function.

Abstract:Phenyl or m-tolyl selenoamides reacted with functionalized alpha-haloacetic acid in 1 : 1 or I : 2 molar ratio with no catalyst in various alcohols to undergo a selenium transfer reaction. This reaction in different molar ratios furnished the same C-Se-Se-C coupling products with a special structure bis(alkoxycarbonylmethyl) diselenide. A new and facile method for synthesis of such bis(alkoxycarbonylmethyl) diselenides with the advantages of mild reaction conditions, high yields, easy availability of starting materials and good chemical selectivity was provided. In order to investigate the mechanism for this reaction, methyl a-bromoacetate or ethyl a-bromoacetate as starting material was added to the solution of phenyl selenoamide in ethanol in I : I or 2 : I molar ratio under the neutral condition at room temperature. The results indicated that the same product bis(methoxycarbonylmethyl) or bis(ethoxycarbonylmethyl) diselenide was formed. Byproduct ethyl benzoate was also separated. A mechanism for this C-Se-Se-C coupling reaction was proposed.

Abstract:The first highly enantioselective direct alpha-amination of aryl ketones was reported to be catalyzed by organic primary amines derived from cinchona alkaloids. Excellent enantioselectivities (88-99% ee) have been achieved for a broad spectrum of aryl ketones. The presence of 4 A molecular sieves was of great assistance for the high conversions and enantiocontrol.

Abstract:An enantioselective primary amine-catalyzed total N-selective nitroso aldol reaction (N-NA) was achieved through the oxidation of primary aromatic amines to the corresponding nitrosoarenes catalyzed by selenium reagents and 30% H2O2. Abstract:beta-Phenylseleno-alpha-tolylsulfonyl-substituted alkenes were synthesized via the three-component conjugate -nucleophilic addition of acetylenic sulfones, phenylselenomagnesium bromide, and carbonyl compounds, such as aldehydes, aliphatic ketones, or alpha,beta-unsaturated enals or enones. The reaction is highly regio- and stereoselective with moderate to good yields. Functionalized allylic alcohols were obtained in the case of aldehydes and aliphatic ketones. In the case of alpha,beta-unsaturated enones, functionalized allylic alcohols or functionalized gamma,delta-unsaturated ketones were obtained, depending on the structures of the ketones.
