Abstract:Although the solar-thermal technology has opened up a potential green energy harvesting method, it is challenging to suppress the non-negligible energy dissipation while maintaining a high absorbance. Most disordered organic polymers are almost incapable of limiting the absorption in the desired cutoff wavelength range, which is detrimental to the design of selective absorbers. Moreover, the development of absorbers with a periodic plasmonic nanostructure is always lacking in cost-effective scalability. Herein, we report a scalable selective absorber with a quasiperiodic nanostructure composed by an economical widespread surface self-assembly of densely arranged Fe3O4 nano-particles, possessing a high-performance energy conversion for low-grade solar energy. By investigating the scale effect of the quasiperiodic densely arranged plasmonic nanostructure, a significant solar absorption >94% and ideal passive suppression of thermal emissivity <0.2 can be obtained simultaneously. With the synergy of material properties, thermal management, and environmental effect, a flexible planar solar thermoelectric harvester is demonstrated under natural sunlight (AM1.5G), reaching a significant sustaining open-circuit voltage of >20 mV/cm2, without a heat sink. This highly versatile strategy is expected to lead the exploration of energy evolution in fundamental research and pioneer next-generation, high-performance, economical, and practical solar co-harvesting systems.

Abstract:The photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical reduction of water or CO2 is an intriguing approach to producing sustainable solar fuels, and has attracted growing and intense interest. Nanostructuring of photocatalysts and photoelectrodes has been proven to be a strong strategy to dramatically improve overall solar-to-fuel conversion efficiencies. Another technological barrier for the practical implementation of solar fuel production is long-term material durability, which has recently been well addressed through use of conformal coatings of protective layers onto the narrow band-gap semiconductors that are suitable for efficient solar-to-fuel conversions but photoelectrochemically unstable. These significant progresses may lead us to the practical implementation of solar fuel production. In this review, we will focus on these exciting progresses achieved using nanostructuring strategies, specifically regarding how the nanostructure influences the charge transport and separation; special attention will be paid to how a nanoscale coating (overlayer) passivates the surface states, thereby reducing the surface electron–hole recombination, and how a nanoscale coating (protective layer) prevents the photocorrosion or photopassivation of the semiconductors with optimal band gaps. We hope that the design strategies using these nanostructures will offer new and greater opportunities for efficient solar fuel production to existing photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical systems.
Efficient photon management with nanostructures for photovoltaics.

Abstract:Efficient photon management schemes are crucial for improving the energy conversion efficiency of photovoltaic devices; they can lead potentially to reduced material usage and cost for these devices. In this review, photon trapping mechanisms are discussed briefly in the beginning, followed by a summary of recent progress on a number of major categories of nanostructures with intriguing photon management properties. Specifically, nanostructures including nanowires, nanopillars, nanopyramids, nanocones, nanospikes, and so forth, have been reviewed comprehensively with materials including Si, Ge, CdS, CIGS, ZnO, etc. It is found that these materials with diverse configurations have tunable photon management properties, namely, optical reflectance, transmittance and absorption. Investigations on these nanostructures have not only shed light on the fundamental interplay between photons and materials at the nanometer scale, but also suggested a potential pathway for a new generation of photovoltaic devices.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmons mediated photon energy conversion in ZnO/Ag/ZnO nanostructures has been investigated. Ag nano islands immersed in ZnO cause a great enhancement of visible light emission where silicon solar cells have maximum response, compared to that of ZnO single layer or Ag/ZnO bilayer structures. It is found that the visible light emission enhancement ratio increases with the thickness of the ZnO capping layer and an enhancement ratio of tenfold for 100 nm ZnO is realized. Furthermore, the intensity and peak wavelength of visible light emission are also influenced by the sizes of Ag islands. The observation of photoluminescence from ZnO/Ag/ZnO nanostructures is interpreted with theoretical calculation of localized surface plasmon resonance. The observed large enhancement of visible light emission may have potential applications in high efficiency solar cells by conversion of ultraviolet to visible light. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Lightweight and low-cost organic photovoltaics (OPVs) hold great promise as renewable energy sources. The most critical challenge in developing high-performance OPVs is the incomplete photon absorption due to the low diffusion length of the carrier in organic semiconductors. To date, various attempts have been carried out to improve light absorption in thin photoactive layer based on optical engineering strategies. Nanostructure-induced light harvesting in OPVs offers an attractive solution to realize high-performance OPVs, via the effects of antireflection, plasmonic scattering, surface plasmon polarization, localized surface plasmon resonance and optical cavity. In this review article, we summarize recent advances in nanostructure-induced light harvesting in OPVs and discuss various light-trapping strategies by incorporating nanostructures in OPVs and the fabrication processing of the micro-patterns with high resolution, large area, high yield and low cost.

Abstract:Flexible solar cells are important photovoltaics (PV) technologies due to the reduced processing temperature, less material consumption and mechanical flexibility, thus they have promising applications for portable devices and building-integrated applications. However, the efficient harvesting of photons is the core hindrance towards efficient, flexible PV. Light management by nanostructures and nanomaterials has opened new pathways for sufficient solar energy harvesting. Nanostructures on top surfaces provide an efficient pathway for the propagation of light. Aside from suppressing incident light reflection, micro-structured back-reflectors reduce transmission via multiple reflections. Nanostructures themselves can be the absorber layer. Photovoltaics based on high-crystallinity nanostructured light absorbers demonstrate enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) and excellent mechanical flexibility. To acquire a deep understanding of the impacts of nanostructures, herein, a concise overview of the recent development in the design and application of nanostructures and nanomaterials for photovoltaics is summarized.

Abstract:Abstract The current global energy problem can be attributed to insufficient fossil fuel supplies and excessive greenhouse gas emissions resulting from increasing fossil fuel consumption. The huge demand for clean energy potentially can be met by solar-to-electricity conversions. The large-scale use of solar energy is not occurring due to the high cost and inadequate efficiencies of existing solar cells. Nanostructured materials have offered new opportunities to design more efficient solar cells, particularly one-dimensional (1-D) nanomaterials for enhancing solar cell efficiencies. These 1-D nanostructures, including nanotubes, nanowires, and nanorods, offer significant opportunities to improve efficiencies of solar cells by facilitating photon absorption, electron transport, and electron collection; however, tremendous challenges must be conquered before the large-scale commercialization of such cells. This review specifically focuses on the use of 1-D nanostructures for enhancing solar cell efficiencies. Other nanostructured solar cells or solar cells based on bulk materials are not covered in this review. Major topics addressed include dye-sensitized solar cells, quantum-dot-sensitized solar cells, and p-n junction solar cells.

Abstract:Silicon nanostructures exhibit prominent properties in solar energy conversion, which particularly offer tunable light harvesting and facile surface modification in comparison with their bulk counterparts. For this reason, silicon nanostructures have been exploited towards solar-driven catalysis, with extensive attention to the related working mechanisms. In this review article, we summarize the recent advances in the solar-driven catalytic applications based on silicon nanostructures. The key parameters to band engineering and surface modification, which hold the key to light harvesting and surface reactions, are specifically outlined for silicon nanostructures. We then overview the synthetic and fabrication methods for silicon nanostructures, which allow tailoring their key parameters. Based on the fundamental mechanisms and experimental methods, we elaborate on the typical applications of silicon nanostructures in solar-driven catalysis, including photocatalytic hydrogen production, dye degradation, organic reactions, CO2 conversion and N-2 fixation, and photoelectrochemical water splitting. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for further development of silicon nanostructures for solar-chemical energy conversion are highlighted. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Bottom-up strategies for the fabrication of nanomaterials have the advantage of scalability, cost-effective and sustainability, and thus hold great potential to solve the current critical energy and environmental issues facing humanity. Current challenges consist of assembly of the nanomaterials into, for example, various forms of films, which are immensely useful in realistic applications of the nanomaterials. The key is to understand the interplay between the material components. In this contribution, I will present some of our recent results in interfacing and assembling different nanostructures at different length scales by solution processes. The resulting architectures have been explored for the efficient conversion of sunlight to chemical fuels. It has proved promising to use earth-abundant materials and low-cost processes to fabricate solar fuel devices for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:This review concerns the efficient conversion of sunlight into chemical fuels through the photoelectrochemical splitting of water, which has the potential to generate sustainable hydrogen fuel. In this review, we discuss various photoelectrode materials and relative design strategies with their associated fabrication for solar water splitting. Factors affecting photoelectrochemical performance of these materials and designs are also described. The most recent progress in the research and development of new materials as well as their corresponding photoelectrodes is also summarized in this review. Finally, the research strategies and future directions for water splitting are discussed with recommendations to facilitate the further exploration of new photoelectrode materials and their associated technologies.

Abstract:Converting solar energy to fuels has attracted substantial interest over the past decades because it has the potential to sustainably meet the increasing global energy demand. However, achieving this potential requires significant technological advances. Polymer photoelectrodes are composed of earth-abundant elements, e.g. carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, which promise to be more economically sustainable than their inorganic counterparts. Furthermore, the electronic structure of polymer photoelectrodes can be more easily tuned to fit the solar spectrum than inorganic counterparts, promising a feasible practical application. As a fast-moving area, in particular, over the past ten years, we have witnessed an explosion of reports on polymer materials, including photoelectrodes, cocatalysts, device architectures, and fundamental understanding experimentally and theoretically, all of which have been detailed in this review. Furthermore, the prospects of this field are discussed to highlight the future development of polymer photoelectrodes.

Abstract:ZnO nanotetrapods are distinguished by their unique nanocrystalline geometric form with four tetrahedrally directed arms, which endows them the ability to handily assemble three-dimensional network structures. Such network structures, coupled with the intrinsically excellent electronic properties of the semiconducting ZnO, have proved advantageous for building photoelectrodes in energy conversion devices since they allow fast vectorial electron transport. In this review article, we summarize recent efforts, with partial emphasis on our own, in the development of ZnO nanotetrapod-based devices for solar energy conversion, including dye-sensitized solar cells and photoelectrochemical cells for water splitting. A pure ZnO nanotetrapod network was firstly demonstrated to have excellent charge collection properties even with just physical contacts. Composition design of ZnO nanotetrapods/SnO2 nanoparticles yielded a high efficiency of 4.91% in flexible DSSCs. More significantly, by secondary branching and nitrogen doping, a record performance for water splitting has been achieved. A perspective on future research directions in ZnO nanotetrapod-based solar energy conversion devices is also discussed together with possible strategies of pursuit. It is hoped that the results obtained so far with the ZnO nanotetrapods could inspire and catalyze future developments of solar energy conversion systems based on branched nanostructural materials, contributing to solving global energy and environmental issues.

Abstract:Metal organic framework (MOF)-based photocatalysts for solar-driven fuel generation have seen significant advancement owing to their structural and porous controllability, high surface area, and distinctive semiconductor property. In this review, the opto-electronic characteristics of MOF-based photocatalysts are firstly introduced. After that, the fabrication strategies for MOF-based photocatalysts are illustrated. Then, some typical MOF-based photocatalysts for energy-related applications are exhibited. Lastly, this review also offers some in-depth perceptions into significant difficulties, advantageous situations, and heuristic possibilities for future improvement. There is no question that the newly developed MOF-based photocatalysts can achieve new innovations for energy-related applications.

One-dimension-based spatially ordered architectures for solar energy conversion

Abstract:The severe consequences of fossil fuel consumption have resulted in a need for alternative sustainable sources of energy. Conversion and storage of solar energy via a renewable method, such as photocatalysis, holds great promise as such an alternative. One-dimensional (1D) nanostructures have gained attention in solar energy conversion because they have a long axis to absorb incident sunlight yet a short radial distance for separation of photogenerated charge carriers. In particular, well-ordered spatially high dimensional architectures based on 1D nanostructures with well-defined facets or anisotropic shapes offer an exciting opportunity for bridging the gap between 1D nanostructures and the micro and macro world, providing a platform for integration of nanostructures on a larger and more manageable scale into high-performance solar energy conversion applications. In this review, we focus on the progress of photocatalytic solar energy conversion over controlled one-dimension-based spatially ordered architecture hybrids. Assembly and classification of these novel architectures are summarized, and we discuss the opportunity and future direction of integration of 1D materials into high-dimensional, spatially organized architectures, with a perspective toward improved collective performance in various artificial photoredox applications.

Abstract:Solar energy is a major source of renewable energy with the potential to meet the energy demand and to support the sustainable development of the world. The efficient harvesting and conversion of solar energy is one of the key factors to maximize the utilization of solar energy. In general, solar energy can be harnessed and converted into various kinds of energy, including electricity, fuels and thermal energy, through photovoltaic, photochemical and photothermal processes, respectively. Among these technologies, photothermal conversion is a direct conversion process that has attained the highest achievable conversion efficiency. The photothermal effect has been used as a novel strategy to augment vaporization and catalysis performance. In this review, we look into the basis of the photothermal conversion process, the design of efficient photothermal conversion materials in terms of both light harvesting and thermal management, a fundamental understanding of various system schemes, and the recent progress in photothermal evaporation and catalysis applications. This review aims to afford researchers with a better understanding of the photothermal effect and provide a guide for the rational design and development of highly efficient photothermal materials in energy and environmental fields.

Abstract:Converting solar energy into hydrogen and hydrocarbon fuels through photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 photoreduction is a highly promising approach to address growing demand for clean and renewable energy resources. However, solar-to-fuel conversion efficiencies of current photocatalysts are not sufficient to meet commercial requirements. The narrow window of solar energy that can be used has been identified as a key reason behind such low photocatalytic reaction efficiencies. The use of photonic crystals, formed from multiple material components, has been demonstrated to be an effective way of improving light harvesting. Within these nanostructures, the slow-photon effect, a manifestation of light-propagation control, considerably enhances the interaction between light and the semiconductor components. This article reviews recent developments in the applications of photonic crystals to photocatalytic H2 production and CO2 reduction based on slow photons. These advances show great promise for improving light harvesting in solar-energy conversion technologies.
