Abstract:Evidence for stable octupole deformation in the neutron-rich region bounded by Z = 54-58 and N = 85-92 is discussed. The largest and most stable octupole deformation (beta(3) similar to 0.1) is found in Ba-144(56)88 where enhanced E1 transitions intertwine the negative and positive parity Lands to 16(+) and 15(-). Evidence for stable octupole deformation is seen from N = 85 Xe-139(54)55 to Ba-148(56)92 from spontaneous fission. The theoretically predicted quenching (beta(3) --> 0) of stable octupole deformation at higher spins is found in Ba-146. In odd-A Ba-143 two pairs of positive and negative parity bands are seen with opposite spins. There is good agreement between theory and experiment for the strongly varying electric dipole moments as a function of mass for Ba142-148. A new region of stable octupole deformation is proposed in Mo-107,Mo-109 centered around. N = 64-66 predicted earlier. In contrast to all other known cases of stable octupole deformation, these nuclei may involve only one pair of orbitals, the neutron d(5/2), h(11/2).
