Abstract:InfiniBand (IB) is an emerging networking technology that is gaining rapid and wide adoptions in many domains. Massive storage systems are undergoing a major shift from FC-SAN (Storage Area network) to IB-SAN. For such massive storage systems, one very important element is the network interconnection that connects computing nodes and storage nodes in the system. InfiniBand is a popular interconnection for high performance systems. Unfortunately, due to limited bandwidth of the other components in the system, InfiniBand performance has remained limited. As PCI-Express (PCIe) 2.0 has recently doubled the transfer rates available, InfiniBand Quad-Data Rate (QDR) mode has become available on the newest Mellanox InfiniBand Host Channel Adapter (HCA) with a 40 Gb/sec signaling rate. In this paper, we evaluate and analyze the bandwidth performance of the QDR InfiniBand via protocols of InfiniBand Architecture (IBA) such as IP over InfiniBand, Sockets Direct Protocol, Remote Direct Memory Access and Message Passing Interface. We show that the bandwidth of QDR InfiniBand is far less than its theoretical hardware bandwidth. Furthermore, we get the maximum bandwidth performance of the protocols in IBA. Finally, we show the approaches to reach the maximum bandwidth and give suggestions on how to benefit more from InfiniBand hardware.
