Abstract:Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the potential of nanoscale Fe and Pd/Fe particles for remediating groundwater and aquifer contaminated with chlorinated solvents. Groundwater and aquifer samples were obtained from an industrial site. The groundwater contained {approximately}1,500 {micro}g/L of PCE, TCE, CT and CF. Rapid and complete dechlorination was achieved with both the nanoscale Fe and Pd/Fe particles. For example, with the Pd/Fe particles (6.25 x 10{sup {minus}3} g/g sediment), all the chlorinated compounds were reduced to below detection limits (<5 {micro}g/L) within 24 hours. All chlorinated compounds were reduced to below detection limits (<5 {micro}g/L) within 24 hours. All chlorinated compounds were reduced to hydrocarbons including methane, ethane and ethene. Experiments with groundwater and aquifer materials up to two months suggest that the laboratory-synthesized nanoscale particles are very stable with no decrease of reactivity and no product inhibition.
