Abstract:Zircons, especially those from the granitic rocks, generally contain hafnium which replaces zirconium in isomorphic form. Levinson and Borup (1960) found zircons containing 22%-24% HfO2 in Norway. Then, Hf-rich zircons have been recognized in many localities of the world. It is worth while to note that Correia Neves et al.([1]) have discovered hafnon with zircon structure and proposed a classification of the zircon-hafnon series, i.e. zircon: Hf/(Zr+Hf)=0.0-0.1, hafnian zircon: Hf/(Zr+Hf)=0.1-0.5, zirconian hafhon: Hf/(Zr+Hf)=0.5-0.9, hafnon: Hf/(Zr+Hf)=0.9-1.0. However, all the hafnian zircons have so far been discovered in pegmatites. Hafnian zircons have also been recognized in Altai and Nanping granitic pegmatites in China, but HfO2 contents in these zircons do not exceed 20%. In the study of the rare-element minerals in the Suzhou granite, we have for the first time discovered hafnian zircons in which HfO2 could attain 36%.
