Abstract:Hardware software cooperation is one of the effective methods for the design of mixed criticality system, which realize resource isolation by necessary hardware semantics, and ensure that different critical tasks meet time constraints based on efficient thread scheduling. Based on a fine-grained multithreaded processor FlexPRET, this paper designs and implements some temporal instruction extensions, and realizes relevant supports in the processor and compiler respectively, so that the program can describe the timing constraint semantics of the worst-case execution time. Experiments show that the extended instructions can provide users with more accurate timing control.

Abstract:Time management is an important function of workflow management systems. The corresponding issues include calculating the execution time of a process, identifying the critical path of a workflow process, scheduling the execution of workflow process and avoiding the violation of time constraints such as deadline violations, time distance violations, fixed date constraints violations and time difference constraints violations. This paper presents six time constraints that can be captured in the workflow definition. The method for identifying the critical path of a workflow process with the six time constraints is proposed accordingly. With the time management the workflow designers, executors and managers can work more efficiently during the workflow modeling or running. The workflow model with six time constraints and the time management method have been implemented in our prototype workflow management system named Cimflow.

Abstract:Real-time systems need reliable guarantees for the satisfaction of their timing constraints. However, novel speed-up hardware architectures and software mechanism, which target improving average-case performances, ignore and sometimes worsen the ability to obtain guarantees. An alternative approach is the Logical Execution Time (LET) model, but there are some deficiencies in existing LET-based development tools. In this paper, we propose a novel LET-based time-aware programming framework called TipFrame. The framework introduces Servants to improve the responsiveness of LET-based periodic tasks further. The runtime makes behaviors in the system level consistent with the semantics of LET model for predictability. TipFrame implements in C language providing time-aware programming interfaces called TipFrame-C. The programming paradigm of TipFrame-C is described using an autopilot avionic control system. Evaluation results demonstrate that our approach is effective and efficient to construct LET-based real-time systems.

Abstract:Normally, tasks are classified into real time and non real time according to temporal constraints for the processing and transmitting of these tasks, consequently the worst-case response time and average performance should be focused on them. However, in practical engineering context, partly violated temporal constraints can be tolerated if the violation meets certain distribution: Nevertheless, the loss-rate (within real time region, an instance of a task is regarded as loss if it violates its temporal constraint) under stable state or statistical real time can solve the problem in some extent, it can't include the permitted distribution of violation. For completely solving the problem, weakly-hard real time schedule theory or window-constraint real time schedule theory, which is used to investigate the problem related to allowing violation of instances over a finite range, consecutive instances or a time window, is proposed. In order to effectively utilize the fact that a practical application can tolerate some violations of temporal constraint under certain distribution, the fundamental research must be done from the aspects of specification of temporal constraint, schedule and schedulibility, and implementation, which are explained in detail in this paper.

Abstract:Wright is a famous architecture description language that is very suitable for concurrent system modeling. Towards the weakness of capability on timed description of Wright, an extension for real time concurrent system modeling is made. Formal language TCSP is used as a basis to describe the behavior semantics of the extended language, and as a powerful analysis tool as well. Timed features such as safety and liveness of the system could be validated in the early stage of system development by model checkers with the extended system description of Wright.

Abstract:An extension approach to the design of distributed real\|time systems is presented. Based on the transformational design approach, this method supports the extension or change of the system specification. The trace part of the new requirement is described by trace logic, and the time part is described by DCI(Duration calculus implementable). A set of standard extension rules help generate the new design specification from the old one. A case of the multi user multi media system demonstrates our method in detail.

Abstract:We present a pattern-based method to express time specifications in the language TLA+. A real-time module RealTimeNew is introduced to encapsulate the definitions of commonly used time patterns. We present a general framework to differentiate the temporal characterizations from system functionality with time constraints. The temporal specification is concise and provably as a refinement of its corresponding functional description without time. The method ameliorates the usability of TLA+ in specifying and verifying time-sensitive systems. A case study is harnessed to illustrate and validate the approach.

Abstract:The ultimate goal of workflow management is to make sure that the proper activities are executed by the right person at the right time, a business activity which satisfies workflow control logic but violates specified time constraints is actually insignificant. So a workflow model requires time specification and verification before it is instanced and executed to guarantee the correctness of time behavior in WorkFlow Management Systems (WFMS). For the important limitation of actual WFMS, a Petri nets-based workflow modeling method for time constraints is put forward in this paper. Firstly, we extend Workflow nets with time constraints and call the new nets Timing Constraint WorkFlow nets (TCWF-nets), then after analyzing the timing property of WorkFlow nets (WF-nets), the schedulability analysis algorithm of TCWF-nets is proposed. Research results show that our method can roundly describe time information and has important reference value in enriching the time constraint modeling in WFMS.

Abstract:It is necessary to find the relationship between product information and development process for saving product development time. Design information constraint tree (DICT) is proposed to describe the constraint relationships among multi-task information. Fuzzy timed workflow net (FTWN) is introduced to analyze product development time. An algorithm is proposed to map DICT onto FTWN. Task execution time and completion possibility are analyzed. The effectiveness of the proposed method to simulate product development time is validated by an example.

Abstract:The introduction of network time protocols such as NTP (at a coarse granularity) and IEEE 1588 (at a fine granularity) gives a relatively consistent global notion of time that has the potential to significantly change how we design distributed real-time systems. In (4), we present a programming model called PTIDES (Programming Temporally Integrated Distributed Embedded Systems) that uses discrete-event (DE) models as programming specifications for distributed real-time systems and describe an execution model that permits out of order processing of events without sacrificing determinacy and without requiring backtracking. In this paper, we present an interesting networked camera application programmed using PTIDES and show how the execution model in (4) can be used to meet real-time constrains in the system. I. INTRODUCTION The introduction of network time protocols such as NTP (at a coarse granularity) and IEEE 1588 (at a fine granularity) gives a relatively consistent global notion of time that has the potential to significantly change how we design distributed real-time systems. Time synchronization over standard networks, such as provided by NTP (3), can achieve timing precision within ten milliseconds, which is sufficient for many interactive distributed systems, such as computer games, where human-scale time precision is adequate. The recent standardization (IEEE 15881) of high-precision timing synchronization over ethernet provides much higher timing precision that is essential for many embedded systems. Implementations of IEEE 1588 have demonstrated time synchronization as precise as tens of nanoseconds over networks that cover hundreds of meters, more than adequate for many manufacturing, instrumentation, and vehicular control systems. In (4), we present a programming model called PTIDES (Programming Temporally Integrated Dis- tributed Embedded Systems) that leverages time synchronization over distributed platforms. PTIDES uses discrete-event models as programming specifications for distributed real-time systems and extends discrete- event models with the capability of mapping certain events to physical time. We use model time to define execution semantics and add constraints that bind certain model time events to physical time. We limit the relationship of model time to physical time to only those circumstances where this relationship is needed. A correct execution will simply obey the ordering constraints implied by model time and meet the constraints on events that are bound to physical time. We then seek execution strategies that can preserve the deterministic behaviors specified in DE models and also provide efficient real-time executions without paying the penalty of totally ordered executions. The key idea is that events only need to be processed in time-stamp order when they are causally related. An execution model that permits out of order processing of events without sacrificing determinacy and without requiring backtracking is described in (4). The formal foundation is based on the concepts of relevant dependency and relevant order. The results are particularly valuable in time-synchronized distributed systems, since we can take advantage of the globally consistent notion of time as a coordination channel. Abstract:In a workflow system, autonomous agents perform various activities cooperatively to complete a common task. Successful completion of the task often depends on correct synchronization and scheduling of agents' activities. It would greatly enhance the capabilities of current workflow systems if quantitative temporal constraints on the duration of activities and their synchronization requirements can be specified and reasoned about. This paper investigates such requirements and related reasoning algorithms. In particular, the paper studies the consistency, prediction and enactment services in a workflow system, and provides corresponding algorithms. The consistency service is to ensure that the specification of the temporal constraints is possible to satisfy; the prediction service is to foretell the time frame for the involved activities; and the enactment service is to schedule the activities so that, as long as each agent starts and finishes its task within the specified time period, the overall constraints will always be satisfied. For the enactment service, the paper identifies two practically interesting families of enactment schedules for autonomous agents, namely “free schedules” and “restricted due-time schedules”. In a free schedule, an agent may use any amount of time to finish the task as long as it is between the minimum and maximum time declared by the agent when the workflow is designed. A restricted due-time schedule is a more restrictive one in which the maximum amount of time that an agent may use is limited to a smaller number than the declared maximum. The paper presents efficient algorithms to find free and restricted due-time schedules. The paper also provides algorithms for the above services when multiple time granularities are involved in the temporal constraint specification.

Abstract:Time management is a crucial part of workflow management software systems, and is also a serious limitation in applying workflow technologies to complex enterprises. Doing researches for time modeling is important to enhance the flexibility of workflow management software systems, to guarantee workflow plan to be efficiently executed and to make enterprises more competitive. The key of time management lies in whether time information is effectively modeled. This paper first introduces the time issues in workflow systems, then surveys the actual status of time modeling and analysis, which involve how time constraints to be modeled and analyzed, how temporal consistency to be verified and time violations to be handled. Based on the evaluation of existing research methods, we indicate the developing trends of time management in workflow systems. Supporting for time management provides a good guidance for developing high flexible and practical workflow management systems.

Specification and Verification of Task-Level Time Constraints in Event-B

Abstract:R177-time systems rely on components that have time constraints to be met. Specification and verification of time constraints is a critical issue of developing such systems. Event-B is a formalism for system modeling and analysis with advantages of mechanized proof and refinement scheme. But it does not directly support the modeling of timing properties. There have been some researches that introduce time concepts to the Event-B language or construct patterns facilitating the specification of timing properties. However, these are mainly concerned with the logical relations between events without the consideration of task-level time constraints. In this paper we identify some task-level time constraints, i.e., coincidence, exclusion and precedence, in real-time systems. For each constraint, we build its pattern from abstract to concrete. Such patterns can be integrated with existing Event-B models smoothly without the adjustment of the Event-B language. Our patterns can potentially be applicable to a wide range of modeling safety critical real-time systems. Furthermore, our work provides a reference for the formal specification of some other task-level time constraints.
