Abstract:The dumbbell model is a coupled hydrodynamic-kinetic model for polymeric fluids in which the configurations of the dumbbells are described by stochastic differential equations. We prove well-posedness of this model by deriving directly a priori estimates on the stochastic model. Our results can be used to analyze stochastic simulation methods such as the ones that are based on Brownian configuration fields.

Abstract:We are concerned with the well-posedness of the density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluid system. By Schauder-Tychonoff fixed point argument, when $\|{1}/{\rho_0}-1\|_{\dot{B}_{p,1}^{{N}/{p}}}$ is small, local well-posedness is showed to hold in Besov space. Furthermore, provided the initial data $(1/\rho_0 -1,\upsilon_0,U_0-I)$ is small under certain norm, we also get the existence of the global solution.

Abstract:We study the well-posedness of a multi-scale model of polymeric fluids. The microscopic model is the kinetic theory of the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbell model. The macroscopic model is the incompressible non-Newton fluids with polymer stress computed via the Kramers expression. The boundary condition of the FENE-type Fokker-Planck equation is proved to be unnecessary by the singularity on the boundary. Other main results are the local existence, uniqueness and regularity theorems for the FENE model in certain parameter range.

Abstract:In this paper we mainly investigate the Cauchy problem of the finite extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbell model with dimension d≥2. We first proved the local well-posedness for the FENE model in Besov spaces by using the Littlewood–Paley theory. Then by an accurate estimate we get a blow-up criterion. Moreover, if the initial data is a small perturbation around equilibrium, we obtain a global existence result. Our obtained results generalize and cover recent results in Masmoudi (2008).

Abstract:We provide a new proof for the global well-posedness of systems coupling fluids and polymers in two space dimensions. Compared to the well-known existing method based on the losing a priori estimates, our method is more direct and much simpler. The co-rotational FENE dumbbell model and the coupling Smoluchowski and Navier-Stokes equations are studied as examples to illustrate our main ideas.

Abstract:Motivated by [P. Constantin, N. Masmoudi, Global well-posedness for a Smoluchowski equation coupled with Navier–Stokes equations in 2D, Comm. Math. Phys. 278 (2008) 179–191; F. Lin, Ping Zhang, Zhifei Zhang, On the global existence of smooth solution to the 2-D FENE dumbbell model, Comm. Math. Phys. 277 (2008) 531–553], we prove the global existence of smooth solutions to a coupled microscopic–macroscopic model for polymeric fluid in 2D under the co-rotational assumption. Furthermore, we provide an estimate on the time growth of these solutions. Our method is general and can be applied to the co-rotational FENE model and to the rod-like model without the co-rotational assumption.

Abstract:We consider a regularized Hookean dumbbell model in dilute polymeric solutions. Compared with the classical model, this model here is more natural, in which appear a macro diffusive term epsilon Delta(x)psi and Friedrichs mollifiers with a parameter alpha. Based on a compactness axgument, the global existence of weak solutions to this model is established in the framework of the Rothe method. By a rigorous limiting process epsilon -> 0(+), we also obtain the global existence of weak solutions to the reduced model with epsilon = 0.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the well-posedness for the new rigid rodlike model in a polymeric fluid recently proposed by W. N. E and P. W. Zhang [Meth. Appl. Anal., 13 (2006), pp. 181-198]. The constitutive relations considered in this work are motivated by the kinetic theory. The micro equations involve five independent spatial variables (degrees of freedom): two in the configuration domain and three in the macro flow domain. We obtain the local existence of solutions with large initial data and also global existence of solutions with small Deborah and Reynolds constants in periodic domains.

Abstract:We construct a unique local strong solution to the finitely extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbell model of Warner-type for an incompressible polymer fluid (described by the Navier-Stokes-Fokker-Planck equations) interacting with a flexible elastic shell. The latter occupies the flexible boundary of the polymer fluid domain and is modeled by a beam equation coupled through kinematic boundary conditions and the balance of forces. In the 2D case for the co-rotational Fokker-Planck model we obtain global-in-time strong solutions. A main step in our approach is the proof of local well-posedness for just the solvent-structure system in higher-order topologies which is of independent interest. Different from most of the previous results in the literature, the reference spatial domain is an arbitrary smooth subset of $\mathbb{R}^3$, rather than a flat one. That is, we cover viscoelastic shells rather than elastic plates. Our result also supplements the existing literature on the Navier-Stokes-Fokker-Planck equations posed on a fixed bounded domain.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the Cauchy problem to the density-dependent liquid crystal system in R3. We establish the local existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to this system. In order to overcome the difficulties caused by the high order coupling terms, a biharmonic regularization of the system, as an auxiliary system, is introduced, and we make full use of the intrinsic cancellation properties between the high order coupling terms.

Abstract:We prove the existence of weak solutions and a unique strong solution to the Oldroyd-B dumbbell model describing the evolution of a two-dimensional dilute polymer fluid interacting with a one-dimensional viscoelastic shell. The polymer fluid consists of a mixture of an incompressible viscous solvent and a solute comprising two massless beads connected with Hookean springs. This solute-solvent mixture then interacts with a flexible structure that evolves in time. An arbitrary nondegenerate reference domain for the polymer fluid is allowed and both solutions exist globally in time provided no self-intersection of the structure occurs.

Abstract:We review the recent results on Doi-Onsager Equations in polymeric fluids, including the existence, uniqueness and properties of the solution to the evolution equations, all equilibrium solutions, stability of these equilibrium solutions, phase transitions from isotropic to nematic and hysteresis phenomenon. More importantly, it is shown the main approach to obtain these results. Comparably, we show the main difficulty to solve these problems with the Onsager potential, which is popularly used to investigate polymeric fluids.

Abstract:In this paper, we mainly study global well-posedness and optimal decay rate for the strong solutions of the compressible co-rotation finite extensible nonlinear elastic (FENE) dumbbell model. This model is a coupling of the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. We first prove that the FENE dumbbell model admits a unique global strong solution provided the initial data are close to equilibrium state for $d\geq 2$. Moreover, for $d\geq3$, we show that optimal decay rates of global strong solutions by the linear spectral theory and a more precise Hardy type inequality.

Abstract:This paper deals with a mathematical fluid-particle interaction model used to describing the evolution of particles dispersed in a viscous compressible non-Newtonian fluid. It is proved that the initial boundary value problems with vacuum admits a unique local strong solution in the dimensional case. The strong nonlinearity of the system brings us difficulties due to the fact that the viscosity term and non-Newtonian gravitational potential term are fully nonlinear.

Abstract:The first part of this paper is concerned with the well-posedness for the rigid rod-like model in shear flow of a polymeric fluid. The constitutive relations considered in this work are motivated by the kinetic theory. The stress tensor is given by an integral which involves the solution of the Fokker-Planck equation. A novel numerical scheme for the Fokker-Planck equation is proposed, which preserves the positivity of the distribution function. Another part of this work establishes the convergence theory of the fully discretized schemes for a simple micro-macro simulation of a polymeric flow.
