Abstract:Stephania viridiflavens is used to treat neuralgia in folk medicine in China. In this study, a proaporphine alkaloid, named d-(+)-stepharine, isolated from medicinal plant Stephania viridiflavens, was studied for its analgesic activity as well as toxicity. In hot-plate test, d-(+)-stepharine showed a moderate analgesic activity in mice (ED50 = 45 mg/kg). However, d-(+)-stepharine also exhibited nervous toxicity to the mice (LD50 = 130 mg/kg). The results indicated that the plants contained d-(+)-stepharine might not be safe for human beings.
