Abstract:This report serves as a retrospect of the problem in question since the early forties when serious study of the effect of sound absorption due to mass transfer began. The progress in an understanding of this effect since then is discussed. Different theories and their relationships are examined. It is concluded that because of the scarcity of data a quantitative comparison between theory and experiment is still difficult. We reach the view that more intensive investigations concerning fog dynamics as well as more accurate measurements of fog constants by employing present-day laser and computer techniques are desirable.

Abstract:Experiments carried out in reverberation chambers show that at a low audible frequency range(below 100 Hz) the sound attenuation due to mass transfer in water fog composed of micron droplets is predominant and increases versus frequency. This agrees with the existing theories but differs from the classical experiment of Knudsen's. Other experiments conducted in a small tube by employing the pulse-echo method with the fog produced by ultrasonic atomizer indicate that the mass transfer process in water fog in a smaller size of the droplet takes place at a higher frequency range. Such a phenomenon has been neglected by some investigaters.

Abstract:Following a previous review [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 70, 1213–1219 (1981)], this paper presents some interesting findings on the sound absorption of fog composed of water droplets down to submicron size and on the influence of fog kinetics. Theory [J. Sound Vib. 43, 467 (1975)] has claimed an attenuation increase due to mass transfer to be several orders of magnitude larger than that for micron-sized particles. This is accompanied by a corresponding frequency shift towards higher frequencies that obeys theory. The relaxation times thus introduced are not justified numerically for liquid water droplets; a correction factor is also proposed from the viewpoint of modern fog kinetics. The result predicts a counter effect or a drastic decrease in the absorption abnormality due to submicron droplets, but the effect is less the larger the droplets. This may lead to a theoretical generalization of the problem applicable to droplets of all sizes. Reverberation chamber experiments with laser monitoring show qualitative agreement with the existing theories but deviation from Knudsen's classical data. The complicated nature of the problem is summarized.

Abstract:In this study, we attempted to eliminate atmospheric fog and aerosol particles by strong sound waves. The action of sound waves created an air disturbance, and the oscillation of the local air caused the micron-sized aerosol droplet particles to move. To provide guidance of the characteristics of the effective sound waves, this study numerically simulated aerosol droplet agglomeration under the action of sound waves, which was solved by coupling computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element methods (DEMs) as a typical two-phase flow problem in this study. The movements of aerosol droplet particles were simulated, as well as their agglomeration. The evolution process of the average particle size and the number of multimers were obtained, and the influence of different sound frequencies, sound pressure level (SPL), and particle spacing on agglomeration were studied. It was found that the promotion effect of low-frequency sound waves on aerosol droplet agglomeration was significantly higher than that of high-frequency sound waves, and the sound wave promotion effect of high SPLs was better than that of low SPL. In addition, the concept of the average agglomeration time required to quantify the acoustic agglomeration speed was proposed, and it was found to be positively correlated with sound frequency and particle spacing, while being negatively correlated with SPL.

Abstract:Biot's two-phase theory for fluid-saturated porous media was applied in a study carried out to investigate the influence of water saturation on propagation of elastic wave in transversely isotropic nearly saturated soil. The characteristic equations for wave propagation were derived and solved analytically. The results showed that there are four waves: the first and second quasi-longitudinal waves (QP1 and QP2), the quasi-transverse wave (QSV) and the anti-plane transverse wave (SH). Numerical results are given to illustrate the influence of saturation on the velocity, dispersion and attenuation of the four body waves. Some typical numerical results are discussed and plotted. The results can be meaningful for soil dynamics and earthquake engineering.

Abstract:This study investigates the propagation of sound waves within deep-sea low-sound-speed channels using the lattice Boltzmann method, with a key focus on the influence of depth-dependent sound speed on wave propagation. The depth-variable sound speed condition is realized through the incorporation of an external force proportional to the density gradient. After the model verification, investigations into the two-dimensional spreading of sound sources reveal that the depth-dependent sound speed curves the wave propagation. When source depths differing from the low-sound-speed channel, wave paths deviate due to contrasting speeds above and below. When the sound source is situated within the low-sound-speed channel, waves exhibit converging patterns. The simulations also detail the total reflection behavior of sound waves. When the incident angle falls exceeds the critical angle, the waves remain intact within the low-sound-speed channel, thereby enabling the preservation of high amplitude acoustic signals even at remote locations. The subsequent simulations of sound wave propagation around obstacles demonstrate that the low-sound-speed channel also exhibits better signal transmission capabilities in the presence of obstacles. In a uniform sound speed environment, acoustic wave propagation around a submarine exhibits a symmetric pattern. By contrast, under depth-evolving speed conditions, submarines operating at various depths manifest distinct propagation characteristics, such as asymmetric wave propagation during shallow diving, as well as wave attenuation or even silencing when cruising within low-sound-speed channels. These findings underscore the profound implications of depth-evolving sound speed on underwater acoustic signal detection and transmission.
The modulation phenomenon of sound speed and attenuation in bubbly media with dual-frequency sound wave excitation

Abstract:Bubbles are prevalent in the marine environment, making it crucial to study the acoustic propagation characteristics of bubble-containing water for underwater acoustics and marine science. However, the problem of attenuation and sound speed of bubbly media has not been fully resolved, with most researchers considering it to be time-invariant. Indeed, in the presence of acoustic with different frequency disturbance, the acoustic parameters of a water medium containing bubbles will be modulated by the spatiotemporal alternating sound field. This study presents a theoretical and numerical analysis of the nonlinear modulation phenomenon produced by two columns of sound waves with different frequencies propagating in a bubble-containing water medium. The research focuses on dual-frequency sound waves and establishes a model to describe the instantaneous sound speed and attenuation in bubble-containing water media. The accuracy of the proposed model is validated via a comparison with linear models. The results show that in bubble-containing water medium, the instantaneous sound speed and sound attenuation of high-frequency sound waves are modulated by low-frequency sound waves. This modulation occurs as a result of periodic changes in the bubble radius, which are driven by low-frequency sound waves, the coupling effect of nonlinear vibrations from different frequency components of the bubbles contributes to this phenomenon additionally.

Abstract:In this paper, long interfacial waves of finite amplitude in uniform basic flows are considered with the assumption that the aspect ratio between wavelength and water depth is small. A new model is derived using the velocities at arbitrary distances from the still water level as the velocity variables instead of the commonly used depth-averaged velocities. This significantly improves the dispersion properties and makes them applicable to a wider range of water depths. Since its derivation requires no assumption on wave amplitude, the model thus can be used to describe waves with arbitrary amplitude.
Effective Medium Method for Sound Propagation in A Soft Medium Containing Air Bubbles

Abstract:An effective medium method (EMM) is developed to investigate the nonlinear propagation of acoustic waves for soft media containing air bubbles, which accounts for the effects of weak compressibility, viscosity, surrounding pressure, surface tension, and encapsulating shells. Based on the dynamics model of an individual bubble that has included these effects, the EMM is presented by employing a simple perturbation approach to “homogenize” the bubbly soft media. The equations describing the fundamental and the second harmonic waves are derived that applies to three-dimensional cases, and then solved in a one-dimensional case to obtain the effective acoustical parameters of a longitudinal wave. The EMM is compared with the previous theories in three representative cases regarded as simple models of significant practical applications. The results show that the EMM agrees well with the previous theories and can incorporate the additional effects, which may notably affect the accuracy of the results. The limitations of the EMM are also identified and stated.

Abstract:Scholars have previously shown that sound waves can promote the collision and growth of cloud droplets. To determine the optimal acoustic parameters for fog removal, a cloud chamber with a diameter of 1.0 m and a height of 7.5 m was constructed in this study. The effects of low-frequency (<100 Hz) sound waves on the dispersion of dense fog at different sound pressure levels (SPLs) were studied and compared with those of traditional hygroscopic salt. Experiments showed that low-frequency sound waves can effectively promote the collision and growth of droplet particles in the cloud chamber and accelerate the evolution process of droplets in the cloud chamber. Moreover, sound waves with relatively low frequencies (<50 Hz) and high sound pressure levels (>125 dB) have a highly significant effect; the low-frequency sound waves defogging effect is better than that of traditional artificial defogging with hygroscopic salts. Importantly, experiments indicated that there are two mechanisms for low-frequency sound waves fog removal in different frequency bands: (1) the collision and dissipation mechanism under the action of 40 Hz sound waves and (2) the evaporation and dissipation mechanism under the action of 25 Hz sound waves. The results of this study objectively verify the feasibility of sound waves fog removal technology. Considering its advantages of low cost, no chemical pollution production, strong mobility, and good environmental adaptability, sound waves defogging has broad application potential in the field of artificial fog removal.

Abstract:Based on the modification of the radial pulsation equation of an individual bubble, an effective medium method (EMM) is presented for studying propagation of linear and nonlinear longitudinal acoustic waves in viscoelastic medium permeated with air bubbles. A classical theory developed previously by Gaunaurd (Gaunaurd CC and Uberall H, J. Acoust, Soc. Am., 1978; 63: 1699-1711) is employed to verify the EMM under linear approximation by comparing the dynamic (i.e. frequency-dependent) effective parameters, and an excellent agreement is obtained. The propagation of longitudinal waves is hereby studied in detail. The results illustrate that the nonlinear pulsation of bubbles serves as the source of second harmonic wave and the sound energy has the tendency to be transferred to second harmonic wave. Therefore the sound attenuation and acoustic nonlinearity of the viscoelastic matrix are remarkably enhanced due to the system's resonance induced by the existence of bubbles.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) effects can profoundly influence underwater sound propagation in shallow-water environments, hence, affecting the underwater soundscape. Various geological features and coastal oceanographic processes can cause horizontal reflection, refraction, and diffraction of underwater sound. In this work, the ability of a parabolic equation (PE) model to simulate sound propagation in the extremely complicated shallow water environment of Long Island Sound (United States east coast) is investigated. First, the 2D and 3D versions of the PE model are compared with state-of-the-art normal mode and beam tracing models for two idealized cases representing the local environment in the Sound: (i) a 2D 50-m flat bottom and (ii) a 3D shallow water wedge. After that, the PE model is utilized to model sound propagation in three realistic local scenarios in the Sound. Frequencies of 500 and 1500 Hz are considered in all the simulations. In general, transmission loss (TL) results provided by the PE, normal mode and beam tracing models tend to agree with each other. Differences found emerge with (1) increasing the bathymetry complexity, (2) expanding the propagation range, and (3) approaching the limits of model applicability. The TL results from 3D PE simulations indicate that sound propagating along sand bars can experience significant 3D effects. Indeed, for the complex shallow bathymetry found in some areas of Long Island Sound, it is challenging for the models to track the interference effects in the sound pattern. Results emphasize that when choosing an underwater sound propagation model for practical applications in a complex shallow-water environment, a compromise will be made between the numerical model accuracy, computational time, and validity.

Abstract:It is shown by using a Dispersion-Relation-Preserving [Formula: see text] finite difference scheme that it is feasible to perform direct numerical simulation of acoustic wave propagation problems. The finite difference equations of the [Formula: see text] scheme have essentially the same Fourier-Laplace transforms and hence dispersion relations as the original linearized Euler equations over a broad range of wavenumbers (here referred to as long waves). Thus it is guaranteed that the acoustic waves, the entropy and the vorticity waves computed by the [Formula: see text] scheme are good approximations of those of the exact solutions of Euler equations as long as the wavenumbers are in the long wave range. Computed waves with higher wavenumber, or the short waves, generally have totally different propagation characteristics. There are no counterparts of such waves in the exact solutions. The short waves of a computation scheme are, therefore, contaminants of the numerical solutions. The characteristics of these short waves are analyzed here by group velocity consideration and standard dispersive wave theory. Numerical results of direct simulations of these waves are reported. These waves can be generated by discontinuous initial conditions. To purge the short waves so as to improve the quality of the numerical solution, it is suggested that artificial selective damping terms be added to the finite difference scheme. It is shown how the coefficients of such damping terms may be chosen so that damping is confined primarily to the high wavenumber range. This is important for then only the short waves are damped leaving the long waves basically unaffected. The effectiveness of the artificial selective damping terms is demonstrated by direct numerical simulations involving acoustic wave pulses with discontinuous wave fronts.

Abstract:Sound waves can be applied on fog elimination due to the acoustic agglomeration phenomena. However, existing studies have different understanding of the effective sound wave frequency and sound intensity for the acoustic agglomeration effect of micro-droplets. This study designs a novel microscopic experiment to visually present the growth process of droplets under the action of sound waves. A group of indexes are also proposed to quantitatively analyze the growing process of micro-droplets under the action of sound waves, such as area-weighted average particle size, relative growth rate of droplets, and relative growth factor of droplets. In addition, a series of experiments with different sound waves are also conducted to explore the impact law of sound frequency and sound intensity on droplet agglomeration. The results verify the acoustic agglomeration effect of micro-droplets by visible processes at microscopic scale and indicate that within the studied sound pressure level (SPL) and frequency range, the droplets’ deposition is faster under the action of sound waves of higher SPL and lower frequency. Most importantly, the critical values of sound wave characteristics for obvious acoustic agglomeration of droplets are presented, providing guidance for choosing effective sound waves in the actual application of acoustic fog elimination.
Finite amplitude wave propagation through bubbly fluids

Abstract:The existence of only a few bubbles could drastically reduce the acoustic wave speed in a liquid. Wood's equation models the linear sound speed, while the speed of an ideal shock waves is derived as a function of the pressure ratio across the shock. The common finite amplitude waves lie, however, in between these limits. We show that in a bubbly medium, the high frequency components of finite amplitude waves are attenuated and dissipate quickly, but a low frequency part remains. This wave is then transmitted by the collapse of the bubbles and its speed decreases with increasing void fraction. We demonstrate that the linear and the shock wave regimes can be smoothly connected through a Mach number based on the collapse velocity of the bubbles.

Abstract:The interference of the direct and ground-reflected sound waves is significantly affected by volumetric scattering in the atmosphere, such as scattering by turbulence and forest. In the present article, the existing theory describing this interference is generalized to three somewhat independent but equally important cases. First, the attenuation of the direct and ground-reflected waves caused by backscattering is addressed. Second, the existing theory is extended for statistically quasi-homogeneous turbulence in which the variances and length scales of the temperature and wind velocity fluctuations depend on the height above the ground. Third, the existing theory, which was previously formulated only for near-horizontal sound propagation, is generalized to slanted sound propagation as pertinent to elevated sound sources. Numerical results for slanted propagation demonstrate that atmospheric turbulence can significantly increase the sound pressure level at the interference minima. The extended theory of the interference of the direct and ground-reflected waves in the atmosphere with volumetric scattering is important for practical applications, such as auralization of flying aircraft and sound propagation in a forest, and can be adapted to radio wave propagation.

Abstract:The importance of incorporating the surface bubbles in acoustic modeling lies in the significant effects of the bubbly layer of the sea surface on the sound scattering, attenuation, and reflection. In the present paper, an acoustical system consisting of water, air, and bubbly water is considered and a particular approach incorporating a new version of the power-law concept for volumetric and scattering attenuation of bubbles is presented for the prediction of low-frequency damping of the sound in near-surface propagation. Sound attenuation in this system is traced in four steps and each step is considered as an individual case. Through applying the new power-law attenuation, the corresponding damping coefficient is derived. It has been shown by comparing the obtained results with experimental data that, at lower frequencies, the present model has better agreement with experiments than the theoretical model. Furthermore, a parametric study is conducted on different volume fractions and surface roughness, from which the equivalent damping coefficient of the free surface region is extracted using a mechanical and acoustical analogy to model the sound attenuation due to impedance difference, rough interface, bubbly water, and propagation range. It has been demonstrated that the present model can be used as an effective simple method for predicting the attenuation of sound in bubbly media with different bubble sizes.

Abstract:An advection-diffusion model in Sigma coordinates is developed to study the mixing and dispersion of pollutant in water under the action of wave and the method for calculating the longitudinal dispersion coefficient is proposed. The effect of vertical oscillation of water particles and the effect of waves parameters on mixing process and diffusion coefficient are investigated.Furthermore, the effect of anisotropic diffusion coefficient on longitudinal dispersion coefficient and the effect of vertical distribution of diffusion coefficient on longitudinal dispersion coefficient are also studied. It is concluded that the vertical velocity of water particles may magnificently affect the dispersion coefficient and the vertical distribution of diffusion coefficient will not remarkably affects the longitudinal dispersion coefficient.

Abstract:The oscillations of ultrasound contrast agents are of particular importance to the understanding of the propagation of acoustic waves in the bubbly liquids (suspensions of ultrasound contrast agents). Acoustic waves propagating in bubbly liquids have been investigated extensively. Little has been dedicated to the resonance effects of the microbubbles on the propagating waves. Here a nonlinear partial differential equation for describing one-dimensional acoustic waves propagating near the resonance frequency of the microbubbles in bubbly liquids is obtained. The present equation recovers classical results for propagating acoustic waves with finite amplitudes in liquids and interprets the acoustic localization in bubbly liquids explicitly.

Abstract:Sound intensity fluctuation plays a significant role in underwater acoustic studies. In this article, an experiment was conducted in the South China Sea using a buoy system that autonomously emitted and received sound signals to obtain data on sound fluctuations under different wind conditions (in windy weather) for about 179 h. Results showed that the fluctuation of the transmission loss in a fixed position reached up to 15–20 dB. Different potential reasons for this transmission loss fluctuation are analyzed. Using the wind speed data provided by the Earth system, the sea surface wave spectrum model, and the bubble layer model, the fluctuation of the transmission loss was simulated based on the modified Ramsurf sound propagation model. The simulation and experimental results were in good agreement with each other. Therefore, the fluctuation of the transmission loss due to wind-generated waves in high sea states should be considered while studying underwater communication, particularly in shallow water with a positive gradient sound velocity profile.
