Abstract:Alpine meadow occupies about 37% of the total 2.5 x 10(6) km(2) of the Tibetan Plateau. Gas exchange between this ecosystem and atmosphere may have a large impact on greenhouse gases budget of the whole plateau. It is still under debate whether alpine meadow is a sink or source of atmospheric CO2 in growing season.Air samples were taken along vertical profiles in the boundary layer above three communities: Kobresia humilis alpine meadow, K. tibetica swamp meadow, and Potentilla fruticosa shrub meadow, in growing season in 2007. Relative contribution of gross photosynthesis (GP) of the vegetation and gross respiration (R, including soil and plant respiration) to net ecosystem exchange of CO2 was calculated by constructing Keeling plots.GP was greater than R for K. humilis alpine meadow and P. fruticosa shrub meadow in clear days, indicating carbon sinks of these communities. The ratio of GP/R was higher in the former community than in the latter one, suggesting stronger sink for the K. humilis alpine meadow. GP/R decreased to near 1 when it was cloudy in these two ecosystems. During showers, the points deviated largely from the lines in Keeling plots. However, progressive transition between sink and source was discernable in these plots.GP was roughly similar or slightly lower than R for the K. tibetica swamp meadow even in clear days. The swamp meadow accumulated deep peat layer during its development and may continue sequestrate C in the soil. Large quantity of exotic dissolved and particulate organic carbon transported from surrounding communities and from herd excreta in the swamp meadow were supposed to result in high gross respiration in the this ecosystem. The results implied that the alpine meadow ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau was the sink of atmospheric CO2 in growing season.
