Abstract:Poincare maps has been proved to be a valuable tool in the analysis of non-linear dynamical systems. Generally, it reduces the study of a continuous flow to that of a two-dimensional discrete map. However, it cannot reflect some characteristics of the response. In this paper, the authors put forward two novel methods, Period sampling peak-to-peak value (PSP) diagram and Improved Poincare map, to describe different types of non-linear responses in dynamic systems. These two methods will use some characteristics of the response, such as the peak-to-peak value and the mean value of displacement in a period. In PSP diagram method, a two-dimensional graph is plotted. It uses the peak-to-peak value as the ordinate and the relevant period sampling number as the abscissa. The Improved Poincare map uses the mean value of velocity in an exterior excitation period as the ordinate and the other is the relevant mean value of displacement. The non-linear response of Duffing equation, Pendulum with support in circular orbit and oscillating circuit are studied by these methods. The PSP diagram is a set of points. The figure for period is a straight line; for multi-period is multi-straight line; for quasi-period is orderly period curve; while for chaos, it is out-of-order. The figure of Improved Poincare maps and Poincare maps for period, multi-period, quasi-period and chaos are about the same, but the improved one may hold the same shape and will not change with the variety of sampling points. Some numerical results are given based on these methods and proved their efficiency to distinguish the non-linear response.
