Abstract:Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) emitted from building materials, consumer products, and occupant activities alter the composition of air in residences where people spend most of their time. Exposures to specific SVOCs potentially pose risks to human health. However, little is known about the chemical complexity, total burden, and dynamic behavior of SVOCs in residential environments. Furthermore, little is known about the influence of human occupancy on the emissions and fates of SVOCs in residential air. Here, we present the first-ever hourly measurements of airborne SVOCs in a residence during normal occupancy. We employ state-of-the-art semivolatile thermal-desorption aerosol gas chromatography (SV-TAG). Indoor air is shown consistently to contain much higher levels of SVOCs than outdoors, in terms of both abundance and chemical complexity. Time-series data are characterized by temperature-dependent elevated background levels for a broad suite of chemicals, underlining the importance of continuous emissions from static indoor sources. Substantial increases in SVOC concentrations were associated with episodic occupant activities, especially cooking and cleaning. The number of occupants within the residence showed little influence on the total airborne SVOC concentration. Enhanced ventilation was effective in reducing SVOCs in indoor air, but only temporarily; SVOCs recovered to previous levels within hours.

Abstract:Semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are ubiquitous and persistent in indoor environments. It is important to understand the mechanisms governing their emission, sorption, and transport. This article reviews the source and sink characteristics of SVOCs, including their emission from source materials, sorption to sink surfaces, and sorption to particles or dust, as well as the experimental and modeling methods to determine key parameters that control these processes.

Abstract:A critical review of the current state of knowledge of chemical emissions from indoor sources, partitioning among indoor compartments, and the ensuing indoor exposure leads to a proposal for a modular mechanistic framework for predicting human exposure to semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Mechanistically consistent source emission categories include solid, soft, frequent contact, applied, sprayed, and high temperature sources. Environmental compartments are the gas phase, airborne particles, settled dust, indoor surfaces, and clothing. Identified research needs are the development of dynamic emission models for several of the source emission categories and of estimation strategies for critical model parameters. The modular structure of the framework facilitates subsequent inclusion of new knowledge, other chemical classes of indoor pollutants, and additional mechanistic processes relevant to human exposure indoors. The framework may serve as the foundation for developing an open-source community model to better support collaborative research and improve access for application by stakeholders. Combining exposure estimates derived using this framework with toxicity data for different end points and toxicokinetic mechanisms will accelerate chemical risk prioritization, advance effective chemical management decisions, and protect public health.

Abstract:Indoor semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) can have a significant impact on human health. Previous studies involved the detection of limited classes of indoor SVOCs in different regions of China. However, overall indoor pollution profiles and the associated health risks via multiple exposure pathways remain unclear. High-throughput screening of SVOCs would help clarify the overall indoor pollution status and identify high-risk pollutants. We collected indoor air and dust samples from 35 Chinese homes and investigated the occurrence of a wide range of SVOCs. Ninety-seven SVOCs including phthalate esters (PAEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organophosphate esters, alcohols, fatty acids, phenols, etc., were detected in the air (total concentrations: 0.13–48 μg/m3; median: 3.4 μg/m3) and dust (total concentrations: 120–1500 μg/g; median: 490 μg/g) samples. PAEs were the most abundant, accounting for 55.3 ± 28.6% and 43.4 ± 16.9% of the total SVOC concentrations in the air and dust samples respectively. Human exposure and health risks of 34 SVOCs with detection frequencies >10% were assessed based on inhalation, ingestion and dermal absorption of SVOCs from air and dust by infants and adults. In the case of indoor SVOCs with log Koa 90% for adults and >69% for infants. The following five SVOCs in air samples posed significant non-carcinogenic risks and are listed based on their decreasing risk level: dibutyl phthalate > phenanthrene > stearic acid > methyl palmitate > lauryl alcohol. Four PAHs with 2–4 rings posed potential carcinogenic risks, with phenanthrene exceeding the acceptable risk level of 10−4. The high risks posed by SVOCs were due to inhalation exposure. Therefore, keeping the air concentrations of SVOCs, especially that of PAEs and PAHs under check would greatly benefit human health in indoor environments.

Abstract:Abstract Indoor air quality (IAQ) standards and guidelines for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been stipulated by various national and international agencies. The main purpose of this paper is to establish an overview of indoor VOCs regarding their impacts on human health. Herein, 13 VOCs were designated as indoor air pollutants (IAPs) in the IAQ standards and guidelines. They were further grouped into four types: nonchlorinated aromatic compounds, chlorinated aromatic compounds, chlorinated aliphatic compounds and aldehydes. For this purpose, the present study discusses the criteria for designating VOCs, and summarizes their main sources in indoor environments. Because the occupational exposure limit (OEL) in workplaces has often used as a preliminary basis for establishing acceptable health-based IAQ guidelines in buildings and residences, this paper thus reviews the OEL values, especially in the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH)-threshold limit value (TLV). In addition, this paper also reviews the information about the classification of carcinogenicity in human by the international agencies for these VOCs. It shows that human tissues, including kidney, liver, leukemia, nasal cavity, paranasal sinus, liver and bile duct, could be more involved in the development of cancers or tumors when people are exposed to these VOCs through inhalation route in buildings over a long period of time.

Abstract:We introduce our recent research advances in the field of indoor Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions and control. To characterize indoor VOC source characteristics, we performed the following analyses:(1) By using analogy analysis, ie, dimensionless analysis, the correlations of scaling the VOC emission data from some typical test conditions (open chamber or sealed chamber) to other conditions were obtained, which were validated with our experimental data or those in the literature;(2) Based upon the fractal theory and mercury intruding porosimetry (MIP) experiments, a kind of macro-meso scale model was developed to predict the diffusion coefficient of VOCs in building material or adsorption material, which was then validated experimentally. Role of Aerosols in Enhancing SVOC Flux Between Air and Indoor Surfaces and Its Influence on Exposure

Abstract:Indoor surfaces play an important role in the transport of, and exposure to, semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in buildings. In this study, we develop a model that accounts for SVOC transport mediated by particles and find that, due to large gas-particle partition coefficients along with large differences in Brownian and gas diffusivities, SVOC transport across concentration boundary layers is significantly enhanced in the presence of particles. Two important dimensionless parameters, Bi-m,Bi-g and Bi-m,Bi-g/(m,p), were identified: Bi-m,Bi-g is the ratio of 1) the characteristic time for the SVOC to transport across the concentration boundary layer to 2) the characteristic time for boundary layer to either be "swept" of SVOCs by particles or "saturated" by release of SVOCs from particles. This parameter can be regarded as a dimensionless mass transfer coefficient. Bi-m,Bi-g/Bi-m,Bi-p characterizes the SVOC mass associated with particles, relative to SVOCs in the gas-phase. Analysis on monodisperse particles shows that flux can be enhanced by as much as a factor of 5 over transport in the absence of particles, for a large particle/gas partition coefficient (log K-part = 13), small particles (d(p) similar to 0.1 mu m) and a small free stream velocity (U-infinity = 0.01 m s(-1)). As particle diameter decreases, flux enhancement tends to increase. However, as particles become very small (e.g., d(p) < 0.05 mu m), flux enhancement for SVOCs with log K-part = 13 decreases slightly. Particles larger than 2 mu m do not significantly influence the flux. An exponential correlation is found to fit the results for polydisperse particles associated with typical indoor environments, cooking and smoking. Two illustrative examples are used to show that, 1) the timescale for di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) to approach equilibrium between the gas and a surface is shortened from 3.0 years to 0.45 years; and 2) in the presence of particles, the gas-phase DEHP concentration and emission rate are predicted to be as much as 4 times higher by our model than that by prior model estimates. Particle mediated gas-phase transport of SVOCs can result an increase in occupant exposure by a factor of 4-10. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Measurements by semivolatile thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatography (SV-TAG) were used to investigate how semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) partition among indoor reservoirs in (1) a manufactured test house under controlled conditions (HOMEChem campaign) and (2) a single-family residence when vacant (H2 campaign). Data for phthalate diesters and siloxanes suggest that volatility-dependent partitioning processes modulate airborne SVOC concentrations through interactions with surface-laden condensed-phase reservoirs. Airborne concentrations of SVOCs with vapor pressures in the range of C13 to C23 alkanes were observed to be correlated with indoor air temperature. Observed temperature dependencies were quantitatively similar to theoretical predictions that assumed a surface-air boundary layer with equilibrium partitioning maintained at the air-surface interface. Airborne concentrations of SVOCs with vapor pressures corresponding to C25 to C31 alkanes correlated with airborne particle mass concentration. For SVOCs with higher vapor pressures, which are expected to be predominantly gaseous, correlations with particle mass concentration were weak or nonexistent. During primary particle emission events, enhanced gas-phase emissions from condensed-phase reservoirs partitioned to airborne particles, contributing substantially to organic particulate matter. An emission event related to oven-usage was inferred to deposit siloxanes in condensed-phase reservoirs throughout the house, leading to the possibility of reemission during subsequent periods with high particle loading.

Abstract:There is an ongoing probing of the role of chemicals in the indoor environment. The majority of potential target substances are so-called very volatile, volatile, and semi-volatile organic compounds (VVOCs, VOCs, and SVOCs). Depending on their physical properties and the mass transfer conditions, they are distributed in or between the gas phase, particle phase, settled house dust, surface films, clothing, and other fabrics as well as the exposed skin and hair of the occupants themselves. Therefore, inhalation, ingestion, and dermal uptake all must be considered as relevant pathways for exposure assessment in human habitats. Exposure to VVOCs, VOCs, and SVOCs can be estimated by measuring their concentrations in relevant indoor compartments or by determining the amounts of the target compounds and/or their metabolites in urine and blood. Assessing the various routes of exposure often requires a combination of sophisticated and interdisciplinary theoretical background and experimental techniques. Consequently, close communication and collaboration between chemical and exposure scientists are needed to achieve a better understanding of human exposure to chemical substances in various indoor environments. Embedded in the toxicological context, this is the basis for assessing the corresponding health risks and for determining control strategies or approaches to limit such risks.

Abstract:Air pollution in China is an ongoing concern, with subsets of the population (e.g., asthmatic children) especially susceptible to the associated health effects. In addition, people spend the majority of their time indoors, where pollutant composition may differ from the better characterized ambient environment. Although volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present health risks and have high concentrations indoors, their sources have not been thoroughly quantified in typical homes in suburban China. Similarly lacking is an understanding of how well a purifier with high efficiency particulate air and activated carbon filters can remove VOCs in a real-world setting in China. In this study, we a) quantified total VOCs (TVOC) and 900 + individual VOCs in 20 homes in China, b) identified potential sources of VOCs, and c) evaluated impacts of filtration. We used non-negative matrix factorization, a variable reduction technique, to identify sources. TVOC and individual compounds had higher concentrations indoors than outdoors (mean [range] indoors, filtration with pre-filter only: 302 [56-793] mu g m(-3); outdoors, entire study: 92 [26-629] mu g m(-3)), indicating prevalent sources indoors. Many compounds detected have not, to our knowledge, been measured in homes in China. Some compounds (e.g., octanal, heptanal, alpha-cedrene) were specific to the indoor environment, a few were ubiquitous (e.g., acetaldehyde, formaldehyde), and others were detected infrequently. These compounds may originate from consumer products, solvents, vehicle emissions, a hexane source, wooden products, and cooking. Filtration may improve air quality indoors by lowering concentrations of some VOCs, and, specifically, contributions related to solvents and consumer products. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:People spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, and indoor air quality has been receiving increasing attention. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are often released from a large number of building materials used for interior decoration and are the main chemical pollutants affecting indoor air quality. Due to material properties and manufacturing considerations, indoor artificial boards, such as density fiberboard and particleboard, are produced using large volumes of VOCs like urea formaldehyde resin and phenolic resin. In recent years, rapid developments in building energy-saving targets means buildings are increasingly hermetically sealed, promoting the accumulation of VOCs in indoor air. This has significant impacts on the health and work efficiencies building occupants. The main interactions between humans and VOCs occur through the respiratory tract or skin contact, and VOCs can cause irritation, sensitization, mutation, and neurotoxicity. For instance, the International Agency for Research on Cancer formaldehyde and benzene have been classified as being carcinogenic to humans (Group 1). Theoretical prediction models and experimental measurement methods of VOC mass transfer characteristic parameters of building materials are the basis for determining the VOC emission characteristics of building materials; they are also the basis for VOC control strategies. Therefore, it is of prime importance to determine the VOC emission characteristics of indoor building materials and propose efficient and appropriate control and management strategies to ensure good indoor air quality. This study will describe three components: the VOC emission model, emission characteristic parameters, and methods of controlling building materials.
Emissions of Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds from Architectural Coatings and Polyvinyl Chloride Floorings: Microchamber Method

Abstract:Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are modern chemical substances that are present in large quantities in indoor environments. Understanding the emission of SVOCs from building materials is essential to identify the main sources of indoor SVOCs and to improve indoor air quality. In this study, a reference method employing custom-designed microchambers (630 mL) was optimized by improving the structure of the gas path and adding polytetrafluoroethylene inner coating to the chamber. After optimization, the recoveries of the microchamber method were significantly improved (75.4–96.7%), and the background in the microchamber was greatly reduced (<0.02 μg/h). By using the microchamber method, 33 SVOCs (including two alkanes, one aromatic, one nitrogen compound, and twenty-nine oxygenated compounds) and 32 SVOCs (including seven alkanes, eight aromatics, and seventeen oxygenated compounds) were detected in the emissions of the architectural coating and the PVC flooring samples, respectively. The area-specific emission rates (SERa) of total SVOCs emitted from architectural coatings and PVC floorings were in the range of 4.09–1309 μg/m2/h) (median: 10.3 μg/m2/h) and 0.508–345 μg/m2/h (median: 11.9 μg/m2/h), respectively. Propanoic acid had the highest SERa (3143 μg/m2/h) in architectural coatings, while methylbenzene (345 μg/m2/h), 2-methylnaphthalene (65.2 μg/m2/h), and naphthalene (60.3 μg/m2/h) were main SVOCs emitted from PVC floorings. Meanwhile, the average second-stage (adsorbed phase) emission mass of the total SVOCs accounts for 66.3% and 47.3% in architectural coatings and PVC floorings, respectively, suggesting that the SVOCs emitted from building materials have a strong tendency to be absorbed on the surface of the room, e.g., the interior wall, the desk or even the skin.

Abstract:Indoor air quality has been recognised as a significant health, environment, and economic issue in many countries. Research findings have demonstrated that some air pollutants occur more frequently and at a higher concentration in indoor air than in outdoor air, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this context, the indoor environment can be of crucial importance because modem society spends most of their time indoors, and exposure to VOCs may result in a spectrum of illnesses ranging from mild, such as irritation, to very severe effects, including cancer. These effects have been seen at very low levels of exposure in many epidemiological studies. In this review, we discuss the nature of the VOCs that are ubiquitous in indoor environment and the evidence for adverse health effects associated with exposure to some of these compounds.

Exposure to SVOCs from Inhaled Particles: Impact of Desorption

Abstract:Inhaled semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are simultaneously present in gas and particle phases. Particles desorb a fraction of their SVOCs moving through the human respiratory tract (RT). Quantifying such desorption is challenging but important since gas- and particle-phase SVOCs deposit in different locations in the RT, encountering different cell populations with varying health consequences. This paper presents a mass transfer model to quantify this desorption process in the head, tracheobronchial, and alveolar regions of the RT. The desorption of SVOCs from inhaled particles can be gauged using the ratio of particle residence time to the time required to achieve particle/gas equilibrium. Results indicate that the larger this ratio is, the more likely particles desorb the SVOCs they carry. For particles smaller than 0.5 μm diameter and SVOCs with a particle/gas partition coefficient (unitless) of 1010, accounting for desorption reduces the estimated particle-phase SVOC concentrations in the alveolar region by more than 35%; the reduction is almost 700% for 0.05 μm diameter particles. In hypothetical scenarios representing common indoor and outdoor situations, neglecting desorption significantly overestimates the concentration of ultrafine particle associated SVOCs in the alveolar region. This model is a preliminary step toward more nuanced estimates of exposure to inhaled SVOCs.

Abstract:High schools contain various sources that can release semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) including phthalates and other plasticizers, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) and pesticides. In this study, concentrations of 42 SVOCs were measured in settled dust (N = 70), heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) filter dust (N = 13), and indoor air (N = 24) across four sampling events in each of seven high schools in central Texas, United States. Both legacy and emerging SVOCs were widely detected. Statistically significant positive correlations were found amongst the concentrations of several SVOCs in pairwise settled dust, HVAC filter dust, and indoor air, suggesting that HVAC filter dust is a promising quantitative forensic technique for investigating SVOC concentrations indoors. OPFRs had higher concentrations in air for classrooms with carpet, while PBDEs had higher air concentrations in computer classrooms. The concentrations of SVOCs in portable classrooms were generally higher than those in permanent classrooms. Significantly higher concentrations of several SVOCs were found in settled dust during the colder season compared to those of the warmer season. These results suggest the substantial influences of flooring types, building types, and seasonal variations on indoor SVOC concentrations in high schools.

This study presents the first large-scale investigation of VOC levels in 169 energy-efficient dwellings in Switzerland. Through a combination of physical measurements and questionnaire surveys, we investigated the influence of diverse building characteristics on indoor VOCs. Among 74 detected compounds, carbonyls, alkanes, and alkenes were the most abundant. Median concentration levels of formaldehyde (14 mu g/m(3)), TVOC (212 mu g/m(3)), benzene (<0.1 mu g/m(3)), and toluene (22 mu g/m(3)) were below the upper exposure limits. Nonetheless, 90% and 50% of dwellings exceeded the chronic exposure limits for formaldehyde (9 mu g/m(3)) and TVOC (200 mu g/m(3)), respectively. There was a strong positive correlation among VOCs that likely originated from common sources. Dwellings built between 1950s and 1990s, and especially, those with attached garages had higher TVOC concentrations. Interior thermal retrofit of dwellings and absence of mechanical ventilation system were associated with elevated levels of formaldehyde, aromatics, and alkanes. Overall, energy-renovated homes had higher levels of certain VOCs compared with newly built homes. The results suggest that energy efficiency measures in dwellings should be accompanied by actions to mitigate VOC exposures as to avoid adverse health outcomes.

Abstract:Interest in the potential human health of semi-volatile organic chemicals (SVOCs) in indoor and outdoor environments has made the exposure assessment and source appointment a priority. In this study, paired indoor and outdoor atmospheric fine particle (PM2.5) samples were collected from 15 homes representing five typical urban cities in southern China. Four typical SVOCs, including 16 congeners of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 13 congeners of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and 8 congeners of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), as well as tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its three debrominated congeners were analyzed. The highest total concentrations were found for OPFRs, followed by PAHs, PBDEs, and TBBPA. The indoor concentrations of two alkyl-OPFR isomers, tributylphosphate (TBP) and tris (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBEP), were 4.3 and 11 times higher, respectively, than those of outdoors (p < 0.05). Additionally, the ratios of indoor to outdoor concentrations of alkyl-OPFR isomers varied greatly, suggesting that these compounds originated mainly from different household goods and products used in individual homes. The outdoor concentrations of PAHs and highly brominated PBDEs (BDE-209) typically exceeded the indoor concentrations. Significant correlations were also found between indoor and outdoor PM2.5 samples for PAHs and BDE-209, indicating that outdoor sources such as vehicle exhausts and industrial activities strongly influence their atmospheric occurrence. Additionally, the concentrations of debrominated TBBPA derivatives were higher than those of TBBPA in over 33% of both indoor and outdoor air particle samples. Nevertheless, our results indicated that inhalation exposure to typical SVOCs posed no non-carcinogenic risks to the human body. Although we observed notable differences in the sources, occurrences, and distributions of typical SVOC congeners, more studies using matched samples are still needed to unambiguously identify important indoor and outdoor sources in order to accurately assess the contributions of different sources and the associated human exposure risks.
Strong Temperature Influence and Indiscernible Ventilation Effect on Dynamics of Some Semivolatile Organic Compounds in the Indoor Air of an Office.

Abstract:Many manmade organic air pollutants are semivolatile and primarily used and exposed indoors. It remains unclear how indoor environmental parameters affect indoor air dynamics of semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in real-world indoor conditions, which directly relates to human exposure. By making time-resolved SVOC measurements over multiple weeks in an office, we characterized the indoor air dynamics of six representative SVOCs which were mainly present in the gas phase and of indoor origins, and investigated the effects of the temperature and ventilation rate. The six species include di-isobutyl phthalate and di-n-butyl phthalate, as well as two n-alkanes and two siloxanes. Airborne concentrations of all six SVOCs responded strongly and quickly to changes in the indoor temperature. The temperature dependence of individual species can be well fitted in the form of the van't Hoff equation, and explained 65-86% of the observed variation in the logarithm-transformed concentrations. In contrast, increasing the ventilation rate by a factor of 3-5 for hours at a constant temperature had no discernible influence on the SVOC concentrations. Further kinetic modeling analysis suggests that the observed fast temperature response and indiscernible ventilation effect are both associated with SVOC sorption onto indoor surfaces, which dramatically slows the response of SVOC concentration to changes in the ventilation rate and speeds up the response to changes in the temperature. These results highlight the importance of sorption reservoirs on regulating indoor SVOC dynamics and also have important implications for controlling and assessing indoor air exposure to SVOCs.
An in-situ versatile screening method for identifying SVOC sources in indoor environments

Abstract:Indoor semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) pose a substantial threat to human health. However, identifying the sources of these emissions has been challenging owing to the scarcity of convenient and practical on-site methodologies. Herein, a novel method for source screening was proposed using aluminum silicate sampling strips to adsorb SVOCs from the surface air of indoor materials. The adsorbed SVOC levels indicate the emission intensity of these materials into indoor environments. Additionally, compact sampling strips can be readily fixed to any vertical surface using a static sticker, facilitating the characterization of various materials in practical settings. Laboratory-simulated experiments demonstrated the capability of the proposed method to differentiate between source and non-source materials within a 10-cm distance in the same space. In practical scenarios, the primary emission sources identified via this method exhibited a consistent correlation with the contents of the corresponding materials obtained from the traditional solvent-extraction method. As the adsorbed SVOCs were directly transferred to a GC-MS through thermal desorption instead of the solvent-extraction procedure, the proposed method demonstrated several-fold improvements in analytical sensitivity and efficiency. Using this versatile screening technique, some emerging and important SVOC species were identified within specific indoor materials. Eliminating these sources has been demonstrated as an effective approach to mitigate SVOC pollution. Overall, the proposed method offers a powerful tool for managing indoor pollutants and safeguarding human health.
