Collaborative Knowledge Management For Engineering Design: A Framework

Abstract:Design knowledge is multi-faceted and its effective management is the key for enterprises to attain a competitive advantage and produce innovation. Current research on design knowledge capture and reuse is mostly focused on either explicit knowledge or tacit knowledge. Thus, interaction and integration of the boundaries of the informal aspects and formal aspects of design knowledge is not well addressed, which has led to the development of very intrusive knowledge tools. This work aims to address this gap by proposing a novel Collaborative Knowledge Management (CKM) framework that enables the capture of both knowledge objects and designer's communications in creating these objects. Such as framework places designers at the very center of a knowledge management process and emphasizes their collaborative work in knowledge creation, dissemination and documentation. This paper details the key elements and methods of the proposed framework, discusses key enabling technologies for its implementation, introduces some preliminary work on a CKM system and makes some recommendations.
