Abstract:Elementary theoretical considerations (based on dimensional analysis, the shallow-draft and deep-draft limits, and thin-ship theory) and bow-wave measurements for 6 wedge-like hull forms by Ogilvie (1972), Standing (1974), Waniewski et al. (2002) and Karion et al. (2003) show that the location X(b) (distance from ship bow) and height Z(b) of the bow wave of a wedge-like hull advancing at speed U are given by X(b) g/U(2) approximate to 1.1/(1 + Ul / root gT) and Z(b)/X(b) approximate to tan alpha(E) / cos alpha(E). Here, g is the acceleration of gravity, T is the ship draft, and alpha(E) is the half-angle of entrance at the waterline. These simple expressions also provide useful approximations of the bow-wave location X(b) and height Z(b) for the Wigley model and the Series 60 model.
