Abstract:We propose a single crystal photonic crystal fiber (SC-PCF) as an efficient waveguide to form quartic soliton for the first time. We design an SC-PCF that meets the real life fabrication tolerances presenting negative fourth order dispersion of about −0.0028 ps4km−1 at 2350 nm wavelength. The fiber also exhibits second order dispersion of about 0.5 ps2km and negligible third order dispersion at the same wavelength which are the criteria to form quartic soliton. Finally, the designed SC-PCF presents pure quartic soliton (PQS) formation for 0.1 ps input pulse with 0.0275 W peak power at 2375 nm. Moreover, we investigate the impact of third order dispersion on PQS. Nonlinear Schrödinger equation is solved using split step Fourier method for numerical analysis. To the best of our knowing, single crystal fibers are yet to be proposed for pure quartic soliton formation which have potentiality for ultrafast laser applications.

Abstract:We present a numerical investigation of nonlinear propagation of femtosecond pulses in photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) by solving the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The PCFs have a second-order dispersion of -48 ps2/km, nonlinear coefficient of 115 W-1km-1, and third-order dispersion (TOD) ranging from 0.1 ps3/km to 1 ps3/km at 1550-nm wavelength. The simulation results show that efficient spectral compression of ultrashort pulses can be induced in the regime of soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) in PCFs when the input pulse parameters satisfy the condition 0.9 = N = 1.2 for the soliton order N. It is found that the output spectral width is dependent on the peak power of input pulse and the PCF length. A spectral-compression factor up to 2.2 can be achieved for 50-fs, 1550-nm solitons propagating through 10-m PCF with a TOD of 0.5 ps3/km, where the soliton wavelength shifted from 1550 nm to 1698 nm. The effect of initial pulse chirp on output spectral width can be negligible for large PCF length. Greater spectral-compression factor can be obtained using PCF with larger TOD value. This SSFS-based spectral-compression scheme offers much promise for generation of narrow line-width tunable light sources in photonic applications.
Designing microstructured polymer optical fibers for cascaded quadratic soliton compression of femtosecond pulses

Abstract:The dispersion of index-guiding microstructured polymer optical fibers is calculated for second-harmonic generation. The quadratic nonlinearity is assumed to come from poling of the polymer, which in this study is chosen to be the cyclic olefin copolymer Topas. We found a very large phase mismatch between the pump and the second-harmonic waves. Therefore the potential for cascaded quadratic second-harmonic generation is investigated in particular for soliton compression of fs pulses. We found that excitation of temporal solitons from cascaded quadratic nonlinearities requires an effective quadratic nonlinearity of 5 pm/V or more. This might be reduced if a polymer with a low Kerr nonlinear refractive index is used. We also found that the group-velocity mismatch could be minimized if the design parameters of the microstructured fiber are chosen so the relative hole size is large and the hole pitch is on the order of the pump wavelength. Almost all design-parameter combinations resulted in cascaded effects in the stationary regime, where efficient and clean soliton compression can be found. We therefore did not see any benefit from choosing a fiber design where the group-velocity mismatch was minimized. Instead numerical simulations showed excellent compression of $\lambda=800$ nm 120 fs pulses with nJ pulse energy to few-cycle duration using a standard endlessly single-mode design with a relative hole size of 0.4.

Abstract:We propose an efficient approach to improve few-cycle soliton compression with cascaded quadratic nonlinearities by using an engineered multi-section structure of the nonlinear crystal. By exploiting engineering of the cascaded quadratic nonlinearities, in each section soliton compression with a low effective order is realized, and high-quality few-cycle pulses with large compression factors are feasible. Each subsequent section is designed so that the compressed pulse exiting the previous section experiences an overall effective self-defocusing cubic nonlinearity corresponding to a modest soliton order, which is kept larger than unity to ensure further compression. This is done by increasing the cascaded quadratic nonlinearity in the new section with an engineered reduced residual phase mismatch. The low soliton orders in each section ensure excellent pulse quality and high efficiency. Numerical results show that compressed pulses with less than three-cycle duration can be achieved even when the compression factor is very large, and in contrast to standard soliton compression, these compressed pulses have minimal pedestal and high quality factor.

Abstract:The spectral compression performance of the fundamental soliton in a dispersion-increasing fiber is investigated through numerically solving the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Based on the calculation results, we detailedly analyze the influence of the input peak power, the fiber length and the initial chirping on the output spectral width and the output center wavelength, and describe the evolution of the spectral width in the fiber. The calculation results show that spectral compression from 12.6 nm to 5.2 nm, i.e. spectral compression rate of 2.42, can be realized for the soliton with pulse width of 200 fs and center wavelength of 1550 nm propagating in the dispersion-increasing fiber with the length of 100 m whose group-velocity dispersion parameter linearly varies between -1 ps(2)/km and -11 ps(2)/km.

Abstract:We demonstrate numerically a novel repeater-based three-stage cascaded soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) structure including a germania-core fiber, an Er3+ ZBLAN fiber amplifier, and an indium fluoride (InF3) or TeO2-Bi2O3-ZnO-Na2O (TBZN) fiber. Wide wavelength tunability of 2–4.4 μm and 2–5.0 μm was achieved with a 5 m-long InF3 and a 0.2 m-long TBZN fiber, respectively. Numerical results show that with the same input pulses, stronger SSFS effect with longer wavelength edge occurred in TBZN fiber with shorter fiber length, while Raman solitons with higher energy, conversion efficiency and shorter pulse duration were generated in InF3 fiber. Compared with the commonly used single frequency shift structure, both the energy and conversion efficiency of Raman solitons in the designed repeater-based three-stage cascaded structure were significantly higher when the same tunable range was achieved. Our work could provide an efficient way to simultaneously improve the tunability, output energy, and conversion efficiency of the existing all-fiber laser sources with a lower operation energy.

Abstract:It is investigated the adiabatic compression of picosecond soliton pulses from a DFB laser operating at 1550nm in the fibers with slowly decreasing dispersion (FSDD).High-quality soliton compression from 4.4 ps down to 830 fs in a 500m (FSDD) is obtained.The compression factor is about 5.3.Experimental results show that nonlinear pulse propagation in FSDD can provide a novel method to generate ultrashort pulses.

Abstract:Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) with anomalous dispersion in short wavelength region are significant for some applications, such as short wavelength soliton propagation, super continuum generation and short pulse fiber lasing. In this paper, a systematic method for designing PCFs with required anomalous dispersion region is proposed by using a finite difference solver and the scaling transformation of the waveguide dispersion of PCFs. Designed PCF can be anomalously dispersive in the region less than 1.3 μm, which is very difficult to realize in the traditional standard single-mode fibers. The effectiveness of the proposed method is approved by numerical results.

Abstract:We numerically investigate a Raman soliton source cascaded by a fluorotellurite fiber and a chalcogenide fiber. By using a 2.8 μm fiber laser with a pulse width of 137 fs as the pump light, widely tunable Raman solitons spanning from 2.8 to 8.1μm are observed in the nonlinear media cascaded by 5 cm fluorotellurite fiber and 10 cm chalcogenide fiber. The pulse width of the red-shift soliton at 8.1 μm is 132 fs. For the first time we propose the idea of coupling the tellurite fiber and chalcogenide fiber to further enhance the SSFS effect in mid infrared region (MIR). Our simulated results show the possibility of generating long wavelength Raman soliton use a source cascaded by fluorotellurite fiber and chalcogenide fiber

Abstract:Self-steepening (SS) is enhanced by slow-light effects in photonic crystal waveguides (PhCWs), with coefficients as large as hundreds of femtoseconds, and it plays an important role in temporally compressed solitons with narrow widths. Here, we investigate the soliton evolution in silicon PhCWs through experiments and numerical simulations; the simulated results agree well with the experimental measurements and help in revealing the physical mechanism of high-order soliton evolution. The dual opposite effects of giant anomalous SS on temporal soliton compression are demonstrated for the first time, i.e., the SS weakens or improves the compression competing with the effects of third-order dispersion (TOD) through two different physical mechanisms. It is also found that SS flattens or steepens the pulse leading edge depending on the strength of the positive TOD perturbation. These results promote the understanding of high-order solitons and can help with the design of suitable dispersion engineered silicon waveguides for superior on-chip temporal pulse compression for optical interconnects, data processing, and microwave photonics.

Abstract:We present a numerical investigation on nonlinear propagation of femtosecond pulses in anomalously dispersive highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) with positive third-order dispersion (TOD). Soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) in the HNLF is shown to enable efficient spectral compression of ultrashort pulse whose parameters satisfy 0.8≤N≤1.3 for the soliton order N. A spectral-compression factor up to 2.5 can be achieved for 60-fs, 1550-nm fundamental solitons red-shifted to 1609nm in the HNLF. We show that the fiber TOD has significant influence on the SSFS-induced spectral-compression performance. Using HNLF with larger TOD parameter, greater spectral-compression factor can be obtained. We also find that the impact of initial pulse chirp on output spectral width is negligible, indicating SSFS-based spectral-compression method is efficient for both chirped pulses and transform-limited pulses.
Soliton Microcomb Generation in a III-V Photonic Crystal Cavity

Abstract:Photonic crystals, material structures in which the dielectric function varies periodically in one, two, or three dimensions, can provide exquisite control over the propagation and confinement of light. By tailoring their band structure, exceptional optical effects can be achieved, such as slow light propagation or, through the creation of photonic bandgaps, optical cavities with both a high quality factor and a small mode volume. Photonic crystal cavities have been used to realize compact nano-lasers and achieve strong coupling to quantum emitters, such as semiconductor quantum dots, color centers, or cold atoms. A useful attribute of photonic crystals is the ability to create chirped mirrors. Chirping has underpinned advances in ultra-fast lasers based on bulk mirrors, but has yet to be fully exploited in integrated photonics, where it could provide a means to engineer otherwise unattainable dispersion profiles for a range of nonlinear optical applications, including soliton frequency comb generation. The vast majority of integrated resonators for frequency combs make use of microring geometries, where only waveguide width and height are varied to engineer dispersion. Generation of frequency combs has been demonstrated with one-dimensional photonic crystal cavities made of silicon nitride, but the low index contrast prevents formation of broad soliton combs. We overcome these challenges by using a photonic-crystal Fabry-Pérot resonator made of gallium phosphide, a material with a high refractive index and a Kerr nonlinearity 200 times larger than that of silicon nitride. We employ chirped photonic crystal mirrors to provide anomalous dispersion. With subharmonic pulsed pumping at an average power of 23.6 mW, we are able to access stable dissipative Kerr frequency combs. We demonstrate soliton formation with a 3-dB bandwidth of 3.0 THz, corresponding to a pulse duration of 60 fs.

Abstract:Inverted nonlinear photonic crystals are the crystals featuring competition between linear and nonlinear lattices, with minima of the linear potential coinciding with maxima of the nonlinear pseudopotential, and vice versa. Traditional inverted nonlinear photonic crystals only have two channels, and can be attained experimentally by means of Rhodamine B (RhB, a dye featuring saturable absorption) doped into the SU-8 polymer. In this paper, a new type of inverted nonlinear photonic crystal is constructed by juxtaposing three kinds of channels into a period. These three channels are a purely linear channel, a saturable self-focusing nonlinear channel, and a saturable self-defocusing nonlinear channel. This optical device is assumed to be fabricated by means of SU-8 polymer material periodically doped with two types of active dyes. The nonlinear propagation of a light field inside this device (passing along the channel) can be described by a nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Stable multi-peak fundamental and dipole solitons are found in the first gap of the system. These solitons sufficiently exhibit some interesting digital properties, which may have potential in optical communications.

Abstract:The authors demonstrate a soliton self-frequency shift of ~150 nm and spectral compression in highly nonlinear fibers (HNLFs) with 580-fs pulses at 1550-nm wavelength. The wavelengths of the resulting solitons can be tuned effectively by adjusting the input power. The results indicate that a resolution of 5 bits for optical quantization can be achieved.

Abstract:A novel all-optical spectral compression structure is proposed, which employs a logarithmic dispersion increasing fiber cascading with a highly nonlinear linear fiber-nonlinear optical loop mirror. Numerical simulation is carried out by solving the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equation using split-step Fouier method, where the soliton number is in the range of 0.5 <= N <= 1.4. The results show that the spectra are well compressed, and the maximal spectral compression ratio can reach 10.93 with a little of pedestal when N = 1.4.
