Abstract:This paper describes a method to recognize Chinese spirits using a gas sensor array being dynamically heated. An FFT and an RBF neural network are employed for dynamic signal extraction and pattern recognition, respectively. Four kinds of SnO2 gas sensors were chosen to build a sensor array for our experiments. Three Chinese spirits, which had similar odors were chosen to be recognized. The response signals were collected while the sensor array was periodically heated. After the FFT was applied on low frequency segment in a specific period, we used RBF neural network to analyze the results for pattern recognition. The recognition rate was 98%.

Abstract:Mammalian olfactory system has merits of higher sensitivity,selectivity and faster response than current electronic nose system based on chemical sensor array in odor recognition.In order to discuss the feasibility of odor discrimination by odor sensing system,the microelectrode array was implanted into olfactory bulb of rats to record local field potential from mitral cell layer after stimulated by four odors including isobutanol,anisole,carvone and citral.The spectrograms using multitaper spectrum estimation and time-shift windows show relative high energy distribution in gamma band(40 Hz～120 Hz) after odor stimulus.A data set consists of 120 odor-induced spectrograms was used for odor classification by K-nearest neighbor method and the classification accuracy reached 77.4%.The result indicates that the olfaction based odor sensing system is capable of discriminating different odors.

Abstract:varieties and amount of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in human's breath are relevant to the health state of human body, and it can be used in disease diagnosis. A kind of uncoated surface acoustic wave (SAW)resonator sensor is presented to develop a system, which can detect the VOCs in human's breath. The composition and principle of this system is introduced, and the key parts of the system were tested. Several experiments were carried out to test the feasibility of the system. The preliminary experimental result shows that this system can detect VOCs at ×10-9 (ppb)level concentrations directly, which demonstrate the potential and prospect for the application of human breath examination.
Mammalian Odor Information Recognition by Implanted Microsensor Array in Vivo

Abstract:The mammalian olfactory system has an exquisite capacity to rapidly recognize and discriminate thousands of distinct odors in our environment. Our research group focus on reading information from olfactory bulb circuit of anethetized Sprague-Dawley rat and utilize artificial recognition system for odor discrimination. After being stimulated by three odors with concentration of 10 mu M to rat nose, the response of mitral cells in olfactory bulb is recorded by eight channel microwire sensor array. In 20 sessions with 3 animals, we obtained 30 discriminated individual cells recordings. The average firing rates of the cells are Isoamyl acetate 26Hz, Methoxybenzene 16Hz, and Rose essential oil 11Hz. By spike sorting, we detect peaks and analyze the interspike interval distribution. Further more, principal component analysis is applied to reduce the dimensionality of the data sets and classify the response.

Abstract:We present a new surface acoustic wave (SAW) chip for odorant detection by the using of olfactory receptors as molecular sensors. The molecular sensors were originated from the expression of ODR-10 in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, which is an olfactory receptor of C. elegances. ODR-10 was then combined with SAW chips to serve as molecular sensors for odorant detection. The resonance frequency shifts of SAW can be recorded to characterize the responses of this molecular sensor to various odorants. The recording data show this molecular sensor can recognize its natural ligand of diacetyl with high specificity and sensitivity. It is indicated that this molecular sensor has great potential to be applied in many fields such as biomedicine, environmental monitoring, and food quality control.

Abstract:The chemical selectivity and the sensor replacements challenge the applications of electronic noses (E-noses) in the detection of complex odors in natural environments. A hybrid of virtual sensor array (VSA) and multisensor array (MSA) was proposed in this article to enhance the selectivity of an E-nose by operating one of the sensor units at multiparameters instead of adding more sensors conventionally. The hybrid sensor array was developed based on four wireless electrodeless quartz crystal microbalances with dissipation (WE-QCM-D), in which the sensor units could be replaced conveniently. Each WE-QCM-D was worked at a different fundamental frequency (6, 7.45, 8, and 9 MHz) and coated with a different sensing film. The VSA was created on the WE-QCM-D working at 6 MHz, and the dynamic viscoelasticity of the sensing film was probed by tracking the resonant frequency shifts and acoustic energy dissipation at multiple harmonics. In practice, the recognition accuracy of the hybrid system on the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the headspaces of seven Chinese herbs was improved by 3%-6% as VSA helped the discrimination between structurally similar VOCs. The results indicate that the VOC selectivity of an E-nose could be improved by working in a VSA mode without increasing the complexity of its geometry. The hybrid of MSA and VSA would be a promising alternative strategy to promote the realization of a low cost and compact artificial olfactory system with high performance and stability.

Abstract:Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are generally considered as the most promising pattern recognition method to process the signals from a chemical sensor array of electronic noses, which makes the system more bionics. This paper presents a chaotic neural network entitled KIII, which modeled olfactory systems, applied to an electronic nose to discriminate six typical volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Chinese rice wines. Thirty-two-dimensional feature vectors of a sensor array consisting of eight sensors, in which four features were extracted from the transient response of each TGS sensor, were input into the KIII network to investigate its generalization capability for concentration influence elimination and sensor drift counteraction. In comparison with the conventional back propagation trained neural network (BP-NN), experimental results show that the KIII network has a good performance in classification of these VOCs of different concentrations and even for the data obtained 1 month later than the training set. Its robust generalization capability is suitable for electronic nose applications to reduce the influence of concentration and sensor drift.

Abstract:Indoor air quality attracted great attention for its significant threats to human health and safety, especially the potential hazardous gases in kitchens. To meet the requirements of the anti-interference detection of multiple combustible gases, in this paper, a miniaturized electronic nose was developed using MOS sensor array for semi-quantitative and anti-interference detection of carbon monoxide and methane with the interference of hydrogen and formaldehyde. The sensor array was constructed using 6 MOS sensors and cross-reaction to target and interference gases. To implement the anti-interference capability, different models were utilized and evaluated including PCA, LDA and BP-ANN. The 10-fold cross validation results indicate that BP-ANN models have the best performance than other models with the accuracy of 93.35 % for CO and 93.22 % for CH4 without interference. With the interference of H2 and CH2O, the BP-ANN model shows the accuracies of 78.92 % for CO and 89.75 % for CH4. Adding interfering samples of H-2 has a more significant impact on BP-ANN models than adding that of CH2O. The results demonstrate that the proposed e-nose with the BP-ANN model can realize semi-quantitative, simultaneous and anti-interference detection of CO and CH4 in the interference environment, which provides a promising platform for gas sensing with multiple interference.

Abstract:Olfactory receptors, which are responsible for sensing odor molecules, form the largest G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family in mammalian animals. These proteins play an important role in the detection of chemical signals and signal transduction to the brain. Currently, only a limited number of olfactory receptors have been characterized, which is mainly due to the lack of sensitive and efficient tools for performing functional assays of these receptors. This paper describes a novel surface acoustic wave (SAW)-based biosensor for highly sensitive functional assays of olfactory receptors. An olfactory receptor of Caenorhabditis elegans, ODR-10, was expressed on the plasma membrane of human breast cancer MCF-7 cells, which was used as a model system for this study. For specific odorant response assays, the membrane fraction of MCF-7 cells containing ODR-10 was extracted and integrated with our SAW sensors. The response of ODR-10 to various odorants was monitored by recording the resonance frequency shifts of SAWs applied to the sensor. Our results show that heterologously expressed ODR-10 receptors can specifically respond to diacetyl, its natural ligand. Dose-dependent responses were obtained by performing measurements using various concentrations of diacetyl. The sensitivity of this biosensor is 2kHz/ng and can detect concentrations as low as 10(-10)mM, which is 10× lower than what has previously been reported. This biosensor can be used to characterize odorant response profiles of olfactory receptors and provide information rich data for functional assays of olfactory receptors. In addition to providing a greater understanding of the biological mechanisms of GPCRs, such data holds great potential in many other fields such as food industry, biomedicine, and environmental protection.

Abstract:Recently, ANNs (artificial neural networks) have been widely used in odour recognition using an artificial olfactory system, an electronic nose. However, when classes have a great difference in shape, volume and density or they are overlapped with each other, the current ANN methods sometimes fail to get a good classification. To solve these problems, an improved odour-recognition method that combines the FCMA (fuzzy c-means algorithm) with an RBF (radial basic function neural network) is described in this paper. Application of this method to the odour-pattern classification of some gas mixtures using an electronic nose based on a gas sensing sensor array has been carried out. Both the computer simulations and the odour-recognition experimental results demonstrate the unusual effectiveness and the good recognition performance of the above-mentioned method.

Abstract:Olfaction guides many significant behaviors for creatures so that study on olfactory transduction mechanism is being attended. In the present paper, we present a novel bioelectronic nose with microelectrode array, whose sensing element is the in vitro olfactory sensory neural networks by culture. Using this electronic nose, we observed the spontaneous signals of OSNs as well as the induced response to Acetic acid. Under the action of Acetic acid, the firing rate of neurons increased distinctively. Moreover, at different site of OSNs networks, OSNs appeared different firing pattern. The bioelectronic nose based on OSNs with MEA provided multi-scale olfactory information and show electrophysiological characteristics at different position, which is favorable for further modeling the olfactory neuronal networks. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:The biological olfactory system can quickly and accurately distinguish odors at trace level. The utilization of biological olfactory system as sensing elements greatly improves the sensitivity and accuracy of bioelectronic noses. In this study, an in-vivo bioelectronics nose was developed for explosive detection, in which bioengineered olfactory system of rat was used as sensitive elements and implantable microelectrode array (MEA) was employed as the transducer. An adeno-associated virus vector containing the gene of an olfactory receptor (OR)sensitive to explosives was constructed and used to generate bioengineered olfactory system of rats, which enables bioengineered rats to generate responsive signals to the target explosives. The responsive signals were collected and analyzed using a wireless MEA data acquisition system. The obtained results show this in-vivo bioelectronics nose is sensitive to different odorant molecules tested. For the next, we will test its capability of detecting explosive odorant molecules.

Abstract:In this article, in order to meet the demand of diagnosis of respiration odor, a new style laboratorial system of artificial optical nose was introduced, which was used to explored the possibility of diagnosing disease through respiration odor. This system consisted of gas-sensitive optic fiber sensor array and signal processing system. Utilizing the characteristics of optic fiber sensor of combing with lots of sensitive polymer easily, responding rapidly and high-precisionly to the gas and obtaining dynamic information of olfaction easily, a method of computing chemistry was applied to achieve quantification of sensitive polymers and fluorescent reagents, and develop the optic fiber sensor array with different selectivities. Besides, an olfactory mechanism was adopted to the artificial nose, which can separate the component and concentration information of mixed gases from the responsive signal data of the optic fiber sensor array using OSN-OB-DLNN (olfactory sensory neuron-olfactory bulb-delay line neural network) arithmetic by simulating biological olfaction. Based on the experimental results, it can be concluded that this laboratorial system of optical artificial nose sensors has the characteristic of bionics and prospect of application.

Abstract:A novel olfactory neurochip based on olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) cultivated on the surface of the 60-channel planar multi-electrode array (MEA) devices was developed in this study. In order to investigate the odor-response characteristics of ORNs, two types of odorants at different concentrations were quantitatively pumped into the neurochip by a customized gas intake system, and the extracellular electrical activities of multiple ORNs were simultaneously recorded in vitro. Accordingly, the odor-response features of ORNs such as firing amplitude, firing threshold, firing rate as well as firing channels were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively in terms of ORN spike trains. Especially, after introducing the classification algorithm based on the spike threshold, the odor-response maps from the multiple sites could be used to identify dl-limonene (LIM) and isoamyle acetate (ISO) odorants. These preliminary studies indicate that the ORN-based biosensor developed here has a potential capability of distinguishing different odorants as a true bionic electronic nose.

Abstract:A light-addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS), a silicon-based surface potential detector, is combined with bioengineered olfactory sensory neurons (OSN) for odorant detection. A LAPS chip is used as a transducer to monitor cell membrane potential changes. In addition, a focused movable laser with a diameter comparable to cell sizes is employed to select the desirable single cell for measurement under a microscope. Bioengineered OSNs are coupled to the LAPS surface and employed as sensing elements, which are prepared by the expression of an olfactory receptor of C. elegans, ODR-10, on the plasma membrane of rat primary OSNs via transient transfection. The responses of bioengineered OSNs to diacetyl, isoamyl acetate, and acetic acid are monitored by extracellular recording using the LAPS chip. Features of the recorded extracellular potential firings are analyzed in frequency and time domains. We have shown that bioengineered OSNs can generate specific response signals upon the stimulation of diacetyl, which is the natural ligand of ODR-10. Moreover, different concentrations of diacetyl can elicit different temporal firing patterns in bioengineered OSNs, which permits the concentration detection of specific odorant molecules in solution.
Electronic Nose Based on Saws Array and Its Odor Identification Capability

Abstract:The ability of odor identification by an electronic nose based on eight surface acoustic wave sensors (SAWS) was demonstrated in the present paper. The SAWS-based electronic nose was established first and its frequency stability was checked. Then, by applying appropriate polymers coating on SAW devices (SAWD), the prototype instrument was employed to collect data from its exposure to four kinds of organic reagents (ethanol, ether, acetone, ethyltate), four kinds of liquors (beer, spirit, samshu, wine) and five kinds of perfumes (phenethyl alcohol, ionone, vanillylalkohol, ethylisobutyrate, thymol). Data analysis was performed by three pattern recognition methods (principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares (PLS), artificial neural network (ANN)). The results showed that the electronic nose was able to identify the above odors quite well.

Abstract:Mammalian olfactory systems have merits of higher sensitivity, selectivity and faster response than current electronic nose systems based on chemical sensor array in odor recognition. The purpose of this study is to develop a biomimetic olfactory sensing system based on brain-machine interface technology for odor detection in vivo electrophysiological measurements of olfactory bulb. In this work, extracellular potentials of mitral/tufted cells in olfactory bulb were recorded by implanted 16-channel microwire electrode arrays. The odor-evoked response signals were analyzed. We found that neural activities of different neurons showed visible different firing patterns in both temporal features and rate features when stimulated by different small molecular odorants. Odors were classified by an algorithm based on population vector similarity and support vector machine. The results suggest that the novel bioelectonic nose is sensitive to odorant stimuli. With the development of BMI and olfactory decoding methods, we believe that this system will represent emerging and promising platforms for wide applications in medical diagnosis and security fields.

Abstract:A novel surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor array based on wireless communication network is prepared. The array is composed of four SAW sensors, a wireless communication network module, and a global positioning system (GPS) module. The four SAW sensors of the array are coated with triethanolamine, polyepichlorohydrin, fluoroalcoholpolysiloxane, and L-glutamic acid hydrochloride to detect hydrogen sulfide (H2S), 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), dimethylmethylphosphonate (DMMP), and ammonia (NH3) at film thicknesses of 50–100 nm. The wireless communication network module consists of an acquisition unit, a wireless control unit, and a microcontroller unit. By means of Zigbee and Lora technologies, the module receives and transmits the collected data to a PC work station in real-time; moreover, the module can control the sensor array’s working mode and monitor the working status. Simultaneously, the testing location is determined by the GPS module integrated into the SAW sensor array. H2S, CEES, DMMP, and NH3 are detected in 300 m at different concentrations. Given the practical future application in environment in the future, the low, safe concentrations of 1.08, 0.59, 0.10, and 5.02 ppm for H2S, CEES, DMMP, and NH3, respectively, are detected at the lowest concentration, and the sensitivities of different sensors of the sensor array are 32.4, 14.9, 78.1 and 22.6 Hz/ppm, respectively. With the obtained fingerprints and pattern recognition technology, the detected gases can be recognized.

Indoor VOCs Fast Detection and Analysis Using a Portable CC/SAW Based Electronic Nose

Abstract:A portable electronic nose prototype instrument for indoor air quality fast detection and analysis was developed. It takes advantage of capillary column (CC) selective separation and the convenience of the surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor (high sensitivity, stable response and tiny size). The instrument is an enhanced portable gas analyzer with a high-ratio multi-adsorbent preconcentrator, tunable separation module, programmed temperature controller and polymer-coated SAW sensors. A relatively simple but effective approach to complex indoor VOCs mixtures recognition and quantification using retention time and peak heights of SAW sensor response becomes achievable. This instrument has been found capable of achieving near real-time analysis of complex mixtures of organic compounds at several ppb(10 -9 ) levels within ten minutes. Preliminary experimental results have demonstrated that this CC/SAW sensors system has high sensitivity, stable response, good selectivity and reproducibility, which provides a potential tool for trace gas detection.
