Abstract:Physical and engineering systems are often subjected to combined harmonic and random excitations. The random excitation is often modeled as Gaussian white noise for mathematical tractability. However, in practice, the random excitation is nonwhite. This paper investigates the stationary response probability density of strongly nonlinear oscillators under combined harmonic and wide-band noise excitations. By using generalized harmonic functions, a new stochastic averaging procedure for estimating stationary response probability density of strongly nonlinear oscillators under combined harmonic and wide-band noise excitations is developed. The damping can be linear and (or) nonlinear and the excitations can be external and (or) parametric. After stochastic averaging, the system state is represented by two-dimensional time-homogeneous diffusive Markov processes. The method of reduced Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation is used to investigate the stationary response of the vibration system. A nonlinearly damped Duffing oscillator is taken as an example to show the application and validity of the method. In the case of primary external resonance, based on the stationary joint probability density of amplitude and phase difference, the stochastic jump of the Duffing oscillator and P-bifurcation as the system parameters change are examined for the first time. The agreement between the analytical results and those from Monte Carlo simulation of original system shows that the proposed procedure works quite well.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging method for strongly non-linear oscillators under external and/or parametric excitation of bounded noise is proposed by using the so-called generalized harmonics functions. The method is then applied to study the primary resonance of Duffing oscillator with hardening spring under external excitation of bounded noise. The stochastic jump and its bifurcation of the system are observed and explained by using the stationary probability density of amplitude and phase. Subsequently, the method is applied to study the dynamical instability and parametric resonance of Duffing oscillator with hardening spring under parametric excitation of bounded noise. The primary unstable region is delineated by evaluating the Lyapunov exponent of linearized system, and the response and jump of non-linear system around the unstable region are examined by using the sample functions and stationary probability density of amplitude and phase.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging method is proposed to predict approximately the response of quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems to bounded noise excitations. Two cases of external resonance only and both internal and external resonances are considered separately. The reduced averaged Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov equation is solved by using the combination of the finite difference method and the successive over relaxation method. An example of two coupled Duffing oscillators under bounded noise excitations is given to illustrate the application of the proposed procedure. It is shown that the analytical results agree well with those from digital simulation of original system.

Abstract:We investigate a kind of noise-induced transition to noisy chaos in dynamical systems. Due to similar phenomenological structures of stable hyperbolic attractors excited by various physical realizations from a given stationary random process, a specific Poincaré map is established for stochastically perturbed quasi-Hamiltonian system. Based on this kind of map, various point sets in the Poincaré’s cross-section and dynamical transitions can be analyzed. Results from the customary Duffing oscillator show that, the point sets in the Poincaré’s global cross-section will be highly compressed in one direction, and extend slowly along the deterministic period-doubling bifurcation trail in another direction when the strength of the harmonic excitation is fixed while the strength of the stochastic excitation is slowly increased. This kind of transition is called the noise-induced point-overspreading route to noisy chaos.

Abstract:The stochastic resonance phenomenon in a bistable system subject to Markov dichotomous noise (DN) is investigated. Based on the adiabatic elimination and the two-state theories, the explicit expressions for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the spectral power amplification (SPA) have been obtained. It is shown that two peaks can occur on the curve of SNR versus the intensity of the DN. Moreover, the SNR is a non-monotonic function of the correlation time of the DN. The SPA varies non-monotonously with the strength of the DN. The dependence of the SNR on the frequency and the amplitude of the external periodic signal are discussed. The effect of the external frequency and the correlation time of the DN on the SPA are analyzed.

Abstract:In this paper, stochastic resonance of an ensemble of coupled bistable systems driven by noise having an α-stable distribution and nonhomogeneous coupling is investigated. The α-stable distribution considered here is characterized by four intrinsic parameters: α∈(0,2] is called the stability parameter for describing the asymptotic behavior of stable densities; β∈[-1,1] is a skewness parameter for measuring asymmetry; γ∈(0,∞) is a scale parameter for measuring the width of the distribution; and δ∈(-∞,∞) is a location parameter for representing the mean value. It is demonstrated that the resonant behavior is optimized by an intermediate value of the diversity in coupling strengths. We show that the stability parameter α and the scale parameter γ can be well selected to generate resonant effects in response to external signals. In addition, the interplay between the skewness parameter β and the location parameter δ on the resonance effects is also studied. We further show that the asymmetry of a Lévy α-stable distribution resulting from the skewness parameter β and the location parameter δ can enhance the resonance effects. Both theoretical analysis and simulation are presented to verify the results of this paper.

Abstract:Stochastic resonance (SR) is a prominent phenomenon in many natural and engineered noisy system, whereby the response to a periodic forcing is greatly amplified when the intensity of the noise is tuned to within a specific range of values. We propose here a general mathematical framework based on large deviation theory, and, specifically, on the theory of quasi-potentials, for describing SR in noisy N-dimensional non-equilibrium systems possessing two metastable states and undergoing a periodically modulated forcing. The drift and the volatility fields of the equations of motion can be fairly general and the competing attractors of the deterministic dynamics and the edge state living on the basin boundary can, in principle, feature chaotic dynamics. Similarly, the perturbation field of the forcing can be fairly general. Our approach is able to recover as special cases the classical results previously presented in the literature for systems obeying detailed balance and allows for expressing the parameters describing SR and the statistics of residence times in the two-state approximation in terms of the unperturbed drift field, the volatility field, and the perturbation field. We clarify which specific properties of the forcing are relevant for amplifying or suppressing SR in a system, and classify forcings according to classes of equivalence. Our results indicate a route for a detailed understanding of SR in rather general systems.

Abstract:The dynamics of the oil–water liquid membrane oscillator driven by external noise was investigated near a Hopf bifurcation point. Noise activated the system producing a sequence of oscillations. The coherence of noise-induced oscillations reached a maximum for a certain noise intensity indicating occurrence of internal stochastic resonance (SR). The constructive role of noise in some sensory cells is discussed.

Abstract:A model system for intracellular calcium oscillations was investigated when the control parameter was perturbed by noise near a Hopf bifurcation point. Noise-induced oscillations were observed. Furthermore, the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the system went through a maximum with the increment of noise intensity indicating the occurrence of internal stochastic resonance (SR), which showed the constructive role of noise at the cellular level.

Abstract:A thorough evaluation of stochastic resonance with tuning system parameters in bistable systems is presented as a nonlinear signal processor. It is shown that the output signal-to-noise ratio obtained by adjusting systems parameters can exceed that by tuning noise intensity, especially when the input noise intensity is already beyond the resonance region. It is demonstrated that the theory and the method presented here can markedly improve the output signal-to-noise ratio, and minimize phase lag as well as the distortion of the system output signal with multi-frequency.

Abstract:Fast wire scanners are today considered as part of standard instrumentation in high energy synchrotrons. The extension of their use to synchrotrons working at lower energies, where Coulomb scattering can be important and the transverse beam size is large, introduces new complications considering beam heating of the wire, composition of the secondary particle shower and geometrical consideration in the detection set-up. A major problem in treating these effects is that the creation of secondaries in a thin carbon wire by a energetic primary beam is difficult to describe in an analytical way. We are here presenting new results from a full Monte Carlo simulation of this process yielding information on heat deposited in the wire, particle type and energy spectrum of secondaries and angular dependence as a function of primary beam energy. The results are used to derive limits for the use of wire scanners in low energy accelerators.

Abstract:The long-term mean-field dynamics of coupled underdamped Duffing oscillators driven by an external periodic signal with Gaussian noise is investigated. A Boltzmann-type H-theorem is proved for the associated nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation to ensure that the system can always be relaxed to one of the stationary states as time is long enough. Based on a general framework of the linear response theory, the linear dynamical susceptibility of the system order parameter is explicitly deduced. With the spectral amplification factor as a quantifying index, calculation by the method of moments discloses that both mono-peak and double-peak resonance might appear, and that noise can greatly signify the peak of the resonance curve of the coupled underdamped system as compared with a single-element bistable system. Then, with the input signals taken from laboratory experiments, further observations show that the mean-field coupled stochastic resonance system can amplify the periodic input signal. Also, it reveals that for some driving frequencies, the optimal stochastic resonance parameter and the critical bifurcation parameter have a close relationship. Moreover, it is found that the damping coefficient can also give rise to nontrivial non-monotonic behaviors of the resonance curve, and the resultant resonant peak attains its maximal height if the noise intensity or the coupling strength takes the critical value. The new findings reveal the role of the order parameter in a coupled system of chaotic oscillators.

Abstract:The stochastic resonance (SR) phenomenon for a fractional underdamped bistable system with multiplicative and additive noise driven by one high-frequency and one low-frequency periodic signal is investigated. The Fokker–Plank equation of the system for the low-frequency motion and the transition rate out of the system stable states are obtained. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is derived based on two-state theory. It is shown that bona fide SR and bona fide vibration resonance (VR) phenomenon occur when the SNR varies with the frequency of the low-frequency signal and with that of the high-frequency signal, respectively. Single resonance peak appears when the SNR changes with the increase of the fractional exponent. Damping-induced SR takes place on the SNR curves versus the system damping coefficient. The SNR obtains one maximum value at certain levels of the multiplicative and additive noise.

Abstract:We have studied the influence of internal noise on a circadian clock system using stochastic simulation methods and chemical Langevin equations. It is found that internal noise can induce circadian oscillations, when the corresponding deterministic system does not oscillate. The performance of the noise induced circadian oscillation undergoes a maximum with the variation of the internal noise level, showing the occurrence of internal noise stochastic resonance. Since the magnitude of the internal noise is changed via the variation of the system size, these phenomena also demonstrate a kind of system size resonance.

Abstract:This paper proposes the concept of pinning noise and then investigates the phenomenon of stochastic resonance of coupled complex systems driven by pinning noise, where the noise has an α-stable distribution. Two kinds of pinning noise are taken into account: partial noise and switching noise. In particular, we establish a connection between switching noise and global noise when Gaussian noise is considered. It is shown that switching noise can not only achieve a stronger resonance effect, but it is also more robust to induce the resonance effect than partial noise.

Abstract:The study of belief change has been an active area in philosophy and AI. In recent years two special cases of belief change, belief revision and belief update, have been studied in detail. In a companion paper (Friedman & Halpern, 1997), we introduce a new framework to model belief change. This framework combines temporal and epistemic modalities with a notion of plausibility, allowing us to examine the change of beliefs over time. In this paper, we show how belief revision and belief update can be captured in our framework. This allows us to compare the assumptions made by each method, and to better understand the principles underlying them. In particular, it shows that Katsuno and Mendelzon's notion of belief update (Katsuno & Mendelzon, 1991a) depends on several strong assumptions that may limit its applicability in artificial intelligence. Finally, our analysis allow us to identify a notion of minimal change that underlies a broad range of belief change operations including revision and update.

Abstract:In the present paper, for a symmetrical bistable system that is excited by a fractional Gaussian noise, via the examination upon the qualitative changes of the stationary probability densities, the phenomena of the noise induced transition and escape and the stochastic resonance, which is in the sense of that the particles oscillate between the double-well potential, are investigated. For a high noise intensity, the probability density function obtained by Monte Carlo method changes from bimodal to unimodal by decreasing the values of Hurst index H. However, in the low noise intensity regime the transition could not occur for all H. Based on numerical results we demonstrate the fact that the mean first passage time (MFPT) is dependent on the Hurst index H and the noise intensity D, and possesses an exponential form as T(D,H)=k1(H)exp⁡(k2(H)/D). In particular, with a higher noise intensity, T(D,H) represents itself as a monotonous increasing function of the MFPT with the increasing H, whereas it exhibits as a non-monotonic function of H in the low noise intensity regime. Finally, nonlinear response theory is applied to investigate the stochastic resonance induced by Hurst index H and noise intensity D, for which we find that only for low noise intensities the stochastic resonance exists via increasing Hurst index which means the effect of noise reduction. This phenomenon is quite different from the one of the classical case.
Stochastic resonance of a pitchfork bifurcation system

Abstract:In previous studies of stochastic resonance for a pitchfork bifurcation system, it is usually considered that the system motion transits between two stable fixed points under the perturbation of an external noise. The present paper has focused on the different cases in which the system state is considered to be in the small neighborhood of bifurcation point under three different types of perturbations: an internal noise only, or an external noise only, or combination of an internal noise and an external noise. Monte Carlo simulations are carried out for the investigation, and the numerical results reveal the characteristics of stochastic resonance in these cases.

Abstract:The influence of parametric noise on the spatiotemporal dynamics of a two-variable reaction-diffusion model, describing pattern formation in excitable media, is investigated. When a control parameter is perturbed by stochastic force with suitable intensity, noise induced pattern transition between "single" spiral wave and "double" spiral waves, which does not occur in the absence of noise, is observed. If this parameter also varies periodically in time around the bifurcation point, we find that the output signal-to-noise ratios show maxima with the variation of noise intensity, indicating the occurrence of spatiotemporal stochastic resonance.
