Abstract:Chinese tourists, who are increasingly traveling out of Asia independently, need trustworthy and readily available information sources. This study explores the motives of Chinese tourists who have invested considerable time (mostly more than a week) in creating information-rich, influential, and interactive online travel blogs—effectively creating personalized little “Lonely Planets” that serve these growing information needs. This study assesses the demographic characteristics of the “Lonely Planets” creators, the features of their blogging behavior, and the motivations for the involvement. It reveals six motive categories: “positive self-enhancement through online social connection,” “altruism: being helpful to fellow travelers,” “social status issues,” “personal status and achievement,” “self-documentation and sharing,” and “hedonic enjoyment of blogging.” Superficially, these motivations seem to be similar with previous Western studies of blogging behavior, but significant contextual and cultural issues exist and are explained. Management implications and future research arising from the current study are provided.

Abstract:This study scrutinized blogs written by American expatriates in twenty-first-century China. The primary objectives were to explore how China is represented in such blogs and to understand the discursive processes through which the American bloggers utilize the blogging technology to narrate their perceptions of the Chinese realities. Drawing on the postcolonial and discursive perspectives, we have determined that the blogs examined here consist of a distinct discursive space of cultural representation and contestation. They were also interpreted as a digital extension of conventional Euro-American travel writing as they share with the genre a set of rhetorical conventions and face the same set of problems of representing the cultural Other. These assumptions guided the discourse analyses of the blogs, written by three American individuals. The study revealed that the bloggers used three prominent metaphors to convey their perceptions of contemporary China, which echo the conventional Western knowledge of the country. During the process, the bloggers were concerned with the Chinese censorship of the internet and they faced challenges from the nationalistic Chinese readers.

Abstract:The blogosphere is a new communication platform in the network in which netizen have strong writing enthusiasm,common interests and exchange willingness.The biogosphere has many features such as aggregation of netizen,emotion communication,shared information and cooperation.In blogosphere,publicity and privacy,sensibility and neutrality,activity and structure can be balanced.As an ideal communicative environment,the biogosphere can avoid single writing and unorganized flaw in spreading.It is in favor of controlling the order of net society.The features of blogosphere such as network convenience,interactivity and openness make it become a platform for exchanging information,studying teaching and sharing information in adult continuing education.The blogosphere is not in use in adult continuing education yet.More attention and study should be paid on its application and standard management from the aspects of morality,technology and law.

Abstract:In this article we examine the role of microblogging in the ongoing process of social change in China, focusing on its impacts on the formation of civil society and the public sphere. We identify several important features of Chinese microblogging, including an anti-authoritarian stance, opinion leaders, and organized campaigns. Theoretically, these features reflect two major social processes that are simultaneously taking place in China today: modernization and globalization. Through micro blogging, these processes influence each other to achieve three possible consequences of social change: fragmentation, development of civil society and the public sphere, and networked violence. Our analysis indicates the failure of civil society and the public sphere to develop as well as the rise of networked violence.
China in the Eyes of Western Travelers as Represented in Travel Blogs

Abstract:Travel blogs provide a new way of understanding consumers' perceptions on destination and its associated products. The purpose of this study was to examine international tourists' destination image of China as represented in travel blog discourse. Data were obtained from blog entries relating to trips to China posted on three dominant travel blog websites. Content analysis facilitated by Atlas.ti 6.0 was performed on a total of 89 China-related travel blogs. The study identified the most frequently discussed aspects of tourists' experiences in China. The results also indicated that the blog authors had mixed and paradoxical images of China as identified by previous research. Marketing implications for China's tourism development based on the results were discussed.

Abstract:In recent years,studies on the impact of internet on civil society in China become a heated field.We review present studies and point out their weaknesses here in a critical and reflective way.First,thanks to NGOs' contribution in 2008 Wenchuan great earthquake,many scholars overestimate the development of civil society in China;second,under western centrism and technological determinism,they simply interpret the internet as a platform for social forces to challenge the state;third,as to the issue of web public sphere,thinness of theoretical resources,inadequate inquiries of group polarization,and simplistic understanding of rationality in online discussion are major drawbacks.At last,to further the research,we propose some approaches:multiply theoretical foundations,shift research perspectives,explore new research methods and select proper methodology consciously and reflectively.

Abstract:There has been a tremendous rise in the growth of online social networks all over the world in recent times. While some networks like Twitter and Facebook have been well documented, the popular Chinese microblogging social network Sina Weibo has not been studied. In this work, we examine the key topics that trend on Sina Weibo and contrast them with our observations on Twitter. We find that there is a vast difference in the content shared in China, when compared to a global social network such as Twitter. In China, the trends are created almost entirely due to retweets of media content such as jokes, images and videos, whereas on Twitter, the trends tend to have more to do with current global events and news stories.

Abstract:Blogs and microblogs became popular in recent years among people who would like to share their travel experiences online. This is a phenomenon which marketers are interested in but know very little about. This exploratory study analyzes blog and microblog contents created by mainland Chinese visitors sharing their Hong Kong experiences, with the objective of gaining insights into how bloggers communicate their travel experiences and how this could help market a destination. Three hundred blog posts and 300 microblog posts are analyzed. Research results indicate a generally positive image of Hong Kong as a destination among the mainland Chinese bloggers. The study also profiles the bloggers by their usage pattern and identifies opportunities for using the social media for destination marketing purpose. While the case study is about Hong Kong, the research method and blogging patterns identified would also apply in other destination situations.

Abstract:China has long and rich traditions of life writing that run from its earliest historical records to the contemporary blogosphere. Biography was, for centuries, a central strand in historical writing, and this official, public life narration co-existed with ‘social’ biographies, necrologies, hagiographies, diaries, poetry, letters, essays and other genres that contained a wealth of reflection on character, experience, identity and the life course. These were preserved in personal collections, exchanged to cement friendships and social alliances, published to promote or challenge hegemonic values, or to enhance individual or communal reputations. China scholars have drawn on this work to supplement or interrogate the orthodox historical record and have mined life narrative for insights into shifting representations of ideas or practices, into generic conventions, and into changing modes of s elf-re presentation and identity formation.1

Abstract:Purpose - Sina Microblog is the most popular microblog in China. The purpose of this research is to explore the factors that influence Sina microbloggers' intention to continue using this platform.Design/methodology/approach - This research proposes the effects of user satisfaction based on perceived usefulness, experiential value and knowledge sharing motivation and community norm on continual usage intention.Findings - The results suggest that continual usage intention is directly affected by perceived usefulness, experiential value, egoism, satisfaction and community norm. Theoretical and practical implications are considered.Originality/value - This paper is one of the earliest empirical studies in China to explore why Chinese consumers intend to rather than actually use Sina Microblog.

Abstract:The Internet spreads tourism information around the world and specifically travel blogs function as an online version of word-of-mouth (eWOM). This research explored the role of blogs as a destination image formation agent for China's inbound tourism. Data were collected from 630 bloggers who wrote on two blog websites about their travels within China in 2011 and 2012. The bloggers on TravelBlog.org and TravelPod.com were mainly from English-speaking countries. Qualitative analysis using Leximancer software was applied and identified nine major textual themes and the relationships among these themes. In order of relative importance, the themes were place, Chinese, people, food, train, city, hotel, China, and students. The research indicated that international tourists tended to have positive images of China.

Abstract:The emergence of social software tools in recent years, such as blogs and Wikis, has provided new opportunities in supporting an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) digital literacy pedagogy. This study explored the student evaluation of blogging for Doing English Digital, a project-based course at Peking University that aims to develop students’ English digital literacy skills. Findings from the focus group interview suggest that from the student perspective, blogging has the potential to help construct individual identities with a variety of semiotic resources and to provide the social, affective, and metacognitive support essential to the development of digital literacy skills. However, the value of blogging for knowledge co-construction is limited. To maximize the value of blogging for the development of EFL digital literacy skills in the Web 2.0 era, EFL instructors need to integrate blogs with other social networking technologies and design meaningful activities that not only encourage peer interaction within the class community, but also support learners in developing social networking skills to connect to a valuable public beyond the class.

Abstract:Understanding social media users' engagement is one of the most crucial steps in a successful deployment of an influencer marketing campaign. On mainstream social media platforms, opinion leaders are the major channels to spread opinions and media content to a large population of consumers. Therefore, analyzing how users respond to the blogs of opinion leaders lies at the core of understanding user engagement in social media. In this article, to study the factors that have great impacts on user engagement, we first collect a cross-platform opinion leaders' blogs dataset, which includes 344 643 blogs published by 93 opinion leaders who have accounts on both Weibo and WeChat, the two most popular social media platforms in China. Based on this dataset, we conduct both characteristics study and semantic study to investigate the impact factors of user engagement with respect to blogs of opinion leaders. To find out the associations between user engagement and practically accessible attributes of opinion leaders and their blogs, we adopt state-of-the-art (SOTA) sentiment analysis models to process the blog data, develop a normalization technique to alleviate the issue caused by the heterogeneity of fall-out intervals of blogs, and devise a saliency method to compute the integrated gradients of sentences in blogs. Utilizing these computational tools, we reveal that user engagement on the two platforms agrees on some common factors, such as the number of tokens of blogs. Meanwhile, the two platforms differ in some aspects. For example, the semantic patterns that can improve the level of user engagement on the two platforms are very different. Our analysis can provide advertisers with valuable insights on how to plan an influencer marketing campaign on the two platforms.
Managing Impressions Online: Microblogs and the State Media'S Adaptation of Online Logics in China

Abstract:This study tackled the remediated notion of consensus that the state-run media in China seek to reach with the online public through using Weibo – the Chinese equivalent of Twitter – as a platform for distribution and user interaction. The microblogs of three major state media outlets were sampled and the posts were categorized. All were found primarily to disseminate information and pronounce organizational opinions rather than promote their offline offerings. Against the backdrop of Goffman’s theory of region behavior, our analysis showed that the state media ritually embraced Weibo’s interactive technical features and selectively used netizens as information sources to distance themselves from their offline parents and to make audience visible on the front stage. Further analysis assessed whether these strategic efforts had been successful by examining how audience responsiveness correlates with a post’s content and format characteristics. Results suggested that audience participation does not necessarily translate into any gate-keeping power. The offline logic of Communist Party journalism appears to have been carried over to the new medium.

The political and social implications of that decision are still unfolding as the Chinese government, media, and public adapt to the new information environment. Edited by Susan Shirk, one of America's leading experts on contemporary China, this collection of essays brings together a who's who of experts-Chinese and American-writing about all aspects of the changing media landscape in China.
