Typically, such illustrations use simple lines to demonstrate medical shapes and features, omitting a great deal of detail. They frequently highlight the most relevant information better than glossy, colored images. Medical illustration has long regarded pen and ink as an important medium. Thus, because medical professionals are familiar with pen-and-ink illustrations, they could readily accept them as an alternative to conventional rendering of medical images. Several authors, such as Treavett and Chen, have begun using NPR in medical visualization (see the “Related Work in Nonphotorealistic Rendering” sidebar for a discussion of other visualization techniques). The general approach has been to apply existing surface-hatching techniques to surface models created from the volume data by marching cubes or a similar method. Surface visualization, however, might not be well suited to portraying soft tissues, which are difficult to model with isosurfaces. This article introduces volumetric hatching, a novel technique that produces pen-and-ink-style images from medical volume data. Unlike previous approaches that generate full-surface models, our technique uses the characteristics of the volume near the stroke being produced to generate a local intermediate surface. Because global isosurfaces can’t exactly model many medical subjects, our volume-based method has considerable advantages. Our method is largely insensitive to surface artifacts. We focus on hatching with line strokes to portray muscles, intestines, brains, and so on. Hatching with line strokes requires determining not just the position of the line strokes, but also their orientation. Thus, the strokes not only illustrate the subject’s shape, but also describe its character in some way—for example, by displaying fiber orientations for muscles. Volumetric hatching can’t replace conventional medical visualization. Rather, it can supply an alternative description that can enhance medical understanding. It might be particularly useful with the vector-based images of functional anatomy, where it could both describe motion sequences more compactly and focus on specific medical features demonstrated in the animation.

Abstract:In this work we focus our attention on improving the visual realism of virtual surgery. A synthetic solution by innovative use of various image-based rendering methods is presented for realistic rendering of virtual surgery scenes. We have, for the first time, developed a methodology for generating virtual surgery scenes with realistic glistening effects by a combination of various image-based rendering techniques, including image mosaicing and view-dependent texture mapping. Realistic examples are presented to showcase the results.
Cinematic Rendering in Anatomy: A Crossover Study Comparing a Novel 3D Reconstruction Technique to Conventional Computed Tomography

Abstract:Integration of medical imaging into preclinical anatomy courses is already underway in many medical schools. However, interpretation of two‐dimensional grey scale images is difficult and conventional volume rendering techniques provide only images of limited quality. In this regard, a more photorealistic visualization provided by Cinematic Rendering (CR) may be more suitable for anatomical education. A randomized, two‐period crossover study was conducted from July to December 2018, at the University Hospital of Erlangen, Germany to compare CR and conventional computed tomography (CT) imaging for speed and comprehension of anatomy. Sixteen students were randomized into two assessment sequences. During each assessment period, participants had to answer 15 anatomy‐related questions that were divided into three categories: parenchymal, musculoskeletal and vascular anatomy. After a washout period of 14 days, assessments were crossed over to the respective second reconstruction technique. The mean interperiod differences for the time to answer differed significantly between the CR‐CT sequence (‐204.21 ± 156.0 seconds) and the CT‐CR sequence (243.33 ± 113.83 seconds; P < 0.001). Overall time reduction by CR was 65.56%. Cinematic Rendering visualization of musculoskeletal and vascular anatomy was higher rated compared to CT visualization (P < 0.001 and P = 0.003), whereas CT visualization of parenchymal anatomy received a higher scoring than CR visualization (P < 0.001). No carryover effects were observed. A questionnaire revealed that students consider CR to be beneficial for medical education. These results suggest that CR has a potential to enhance knowledge acquisition and transfer from medical imaging data in medical education.

Abstract:In order to reduce the risk of themoseeds hyperthemia clinical operation, an intuitive 3-D virtual patient needs to be reconstructed by the preoperative treatment planning system. The reconstruct results can supply the geometric physiological information of lesions and their surrounding tissues to form an optimal operation planning. In this study, the construction of 3D image intuitive environment of diagnosis and treatment in the system was investigated. On the basis of 2-D DICOM medical images, the 3-D data field was established and visually rendered, and the methods of volume rendering and surface rendering were correspondingly investigated. Results show that these two algorithms can provide specific rendering models for different organs. Volume rendering method can show good effects for 3-D body visualization and real-time interaction, and surface rendering method can extract iso-surface models to support tissue segmentation display and build thermal dose field.

Abstract:This paper explores a 3-D computer artist's approach to the creation of three-dimensional computer-generated imagery (CGI) derived from clinical scan data. Interpretation of scientific imagery, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), is restricted to the eye of the trained medical practitioner in a clinical or scientific context. In the research work described here, MRI data are visualized and interpreted by a 3-D computer artist using the tools of the digital animator to navigate image complexity and widen interaction. In this process, the artefact moves across disciplines; it is no longer tethered to its diagnostic origins. It becomes an object that has visual attributes such as light, texture and composition, and a visual aesthetic of its own. The introduction of these visual attributes provides a platform for improved accessibility by a lay audience. The paper argues that this more artisan approach to clinical data visualization has a potential real-world application as a communicative tool for clinicians and patients during consultation.

By leveraging recent advances in virtual reality, we can rapidly create immersive anatomical scenes as well as allow multiple users to occupy the same virtual space: i.e., over a local or distributed network. This setup is ideal for pre-surgical planning and education, allowing users to identify and study structures of interest. Abstract:Abstract Three-dimensional visualizations and 3D-printed organs are used increasingly for teaching, surgery planning, patient education, and interventions. Hence, pipelines for the creation of the necessary geometric data from CT or MR images on a per-patient basis are needed. Furthermore, modern 3D printing techniques enable new possibilities for the models with regard to color, softness, and textures. However, to utilize these new features, the respective information has to be derived from the medical images in addition to the geometry of the relevant organ structures. In this work, we propose an automatable pipeline for the creation of realistic, patientspecific 3D-models for visualization and 3D printing in the context of liver surgery and discuss remaining challenges.

Abstract:PurposeVirtual digital resources and printed models have become indispensable tools for medical training and surgical planning. Nevertheless, printed models of soft tissue organs are still challenging to reproduce. This study adopts open source packages and a low-cost desktop 3D printer to convert multiple modalities of medical images to digital resources (volume rendering images and digital models) and lifelike printed models, which are useful to enhance our understanding of the geometric structure and complex spatial nature of anatomical organs.Materials and methodsNeuroimaging technologies such as CT, CTA, MRI, and TOF-MRA collect serial medical images. The procedures for producing digital resources can be divided into volume rendering and medical image reconstruction. To verify the accuracy of reconstruction, this study presents qualitative and quantitative assessments. Subsequently, digital models are archived as stereolithography format files and imported to the bundled software of the 3D printer. The printed models are produced using polylactide filament materials.ResultsWe have successfully converted multiple modalities of medical images to digital resources and printed models for both hard organs (cranial base and tooth) and soft tissue organs (brain, blood vessels of the brain, the heart chambers and vessel lumen, and pituitary tumor). Multiple digital resources and printed models were provided to illustrate the anatomical relationship between organs and complicated surrounding structures. Three-dimensional printing (3DP) is a powerful tool to produce lifelike and tangible models.ConclusionsWe present an available and cost-effective method for producing both digital resources and printed models. The choice of modality in medical images and the processing approach is important when reproducing soft tissue organs models. The accuracy of the printed model is determined by the quality of organ models and 3DP. With the ongoing improvement of printing techniques and the variety of materials available, 3DP will become an indispensable tool in medical training and surgical planning.

Abstract:Since the discovery of X-rays in 1895, medical imaging systems have played a crucial role in medicine by permitting the visualization of internal structures and understanding the function of organ systems. Traditional imaging modalities including Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ultrasound (US) present fixed two-dimensional (2D) images which are difficult to conceptualize complex anatomy. Advanced volumetric medical imaging allows for three-dimensional (3D) image post-processing and image segmentation to be performed, enabling the creation of 3D volume renderings and enhanced visualization of pertinent anatomic structures in 3D. Furthermore, 3D imaging is used to generate 3D printed models and extended reality (augmented reality and virtual reality) models. A 3D image translates medical imaging information into a visual story rendering complex data and abstract ideas into an easily understood and tangible concept. Clinicians use 3D models to comprehend complex anatomical structures and to plan and guide surgical interventions more precisely. This chapter will review the volumetric radiological techniques that are commonly utilized for advanced 3D visualization. It will also provide examples of 3D printing and extended reality technology applications in radiology and describe the positive impact of advanced radiological image visualization on patient care.
Online view enhancement for exploration inside medical volumetric data using virtual reality

Abstract:Background and objective: Medical image visualization is an essential tool for conveying anatomical information. Ray-casting-based volume rendering is commonly used for generating visualizations of raw medical images. However, exposing a target area inside the skin often requires manual tuning of transfer functions or segmentation of original images, as preset parameters in volume rendering may not work well for arbitrary scanned data. This process is tedious and unnatural. To address this issue, we propose a volume visualization system that enhances the view inside the skin, enabling flexible exploration of medical volumetric data using virtual reality. Methods: In our proposed system, we design a virtual reality interface that allows users to walk inside the data. We introduce a view-dependent occlusion weakening method based on geodesic distance transform to support this interaction. By combining these methods, we develop a virtual reality system with intuitive interactions, facilitating online view enhancement for medical data exploration and annotation inside the volume. Results: Our rendering results demonstrate that the proposed occlusion weakening method effectively weakens obstacles while preserving the target area. Furthermore, comparative analysis with other alternative solutions highlights the advantages of our method in virtual reality. We conducted user studies to evaluate our system, including area annotation and line drawing tasks. The results showed that our method with enhanced views achieved 47.73% and 35.29% higher accuracy compared to the group with traditional volume rendering. Additionally, subjective feedback from medical experts further supported the effectiveness of the designed interactions in virtual reality. Conclusions: We successfully address the occlusion problems in the exploration of medical volumetric data within a virtual reality environment. Our system allows for flexible integration of scanned medical volumes without requiring extensive manual preprocessing. The results of our user studies demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of walk-in interaction for medical data exploration.
XReal: Realistic Anatomy and Pathology-Aware X-ray Generation via Controllable Diffusion Model

Abstract:Large-scale generative models have demonstrated impressive capacity in producing visually compelling images, with increasing applications in medical imaging. However, they continue to grapple with the challenge of image hallucination and the generation of anatomically inaccurate outputs. These limitations are mainly due to the sole reliance on textual inputs and lack of spatial control over the generated images, hindering the potential usefulness of such models in real-life settings. We present XReal, a novel controllable diffusion model for generating realistic chest X-ray images through precise anatomy and pathology location control. Our lightweight method can seamlessly integrate spatial control in a pre-trained text-to-image diffusion model without fine-tuning, retaining its existing knowledge while enhancing its generation capabilities. XReal outperforms state-of-the-art x-ray diffusion models in quantitative and qualitative metrics while showing 13% and 10% anatomy and pathology realism gain, respectively, based on the expert radiologist evaluation. Our model holds promise for advancing generative models in medical imaging, offering greater precision and adaptability while inviting further exploration in this evolving field. Abstract:Virtual surgical training is crucial for enhancing minimally invasive surgical skills. Traditional geometric reconstruction methods based on medical CT/MRI images often fall short in providing color information, which is typically generated through pseudo-coloring or artistic rendering. To simultaneously reconstruct both the geometric shape and appearance information of organs, we propose a novel organ model reconstruction network called Endoscope-NeSRF. This network jointly leverages neural radiance fields and Signed Distance Function (SDF) to reconstruct a textured geometric model of the organ of interest from multi-view photometric images acquired by an endoscope. The prior knowledge of the inverse correlation between the distance from the light source to the object and the radiance improves the real physical properties of the organ. The dilated mask further refines the appearance and geometry at the organ's edges. We also proposed a highlight adaptive optimization strategy to remove highlights caused by the light source during the acquisition process, thereby preventing the reconstruction results in areas previously affected by highlights from turning white. Finally, the real-time realistic rendering of the organ model is achieved by combining the inverse rendering and Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) rendering methods. Experimental results show that our method closely matches the Instant-NGP method in appearance reconstruction, outperforming other state-of-the-art methods, and stands as the superior method in terms of geometric reconstruction. Our method obtained a detailed geometric model and realistic appearance, providing a realistic visual sense for virtual surgical simulation, which is important for medical training.

Abstract:Background: Aesthetic surgery deals in large part with the manipulation of soft-tissue structures that are not amenable to visualization by standard technologies. As a result, accurate three-dimensional depictions of relevant surgical anatomy have yet to be developed. This study presents a method for the creation of detailed virtual reality models of anatomy relevant to aesthetic surgery. Methods: Two-dimensional histologic sections of a cadaver from the National Library of Medicine's Visible Human Project were imported into Alias's Maya, a computer modeling and animation software package. These two-dimensional data were then "stacked" as a series of vertical planes. Relevant anatomy was outlined in cross-section on each two-dimensional section, and the resulting outlines were used to generate three-dimensional representations of the structures in Maya. Results: A detailed and accurate three-dimensional model of the soft tissues germane to aesthetic surgery was created. This model is optimized for use in surgical animation and can be modified for use in surgical simulators currently being developed. Conclusions: A model of facial anatomy viewable from any angle in three-dimensional space was developed. The model has applications in medical education and, with future work, could play a role in surgical planning. This study emphasizes the role of three-dimensionalization of the soft tissues of the face in the evolution of aesthetic surgery.

Abstract:Importance . Medical images are essential for modern medicine and an important research subject in visualization. However, medical experts are often not aware of the many advanced three-dimensional (3D) medical image visualization techniques that could increase their capabilities in data analysis and assist the decision-making process for specific medical problems. Our paper provides a review of 3D visualization techniques for medical images, intending to bridge the gap between medical experts and visualization researchers. Highlights . Fundamental visualization techniques are revisited for various medical imaging modalities, from computational tomography to diffusion tensor imaging, featuring techniques that enhance spatial perception, which is critical for medical practices. The state-of-the-art of medical visualization is reviewed based on a procedure-oriented classification of medical problems for studies of individuals and populations. This paper summarizes free software tools for different modalities of medical images designed for various purposes, including visualization, analysis, and segmentation, and it provides respective Internet links. Conclusions . Visualization techniques are a useful tool for medical experts to tackle specific medical problems in their daily work. Our review provides a quick reference to such techniques given the medical problem and modalities of associated medical images. We summarize fundamental techniques and readily available visualization tools to help medical experts to better understand and utilize medical imaging data. This paper could contribute to the joint effort of the medical and visualization communities to advance precision medicine.
