Abstract:Traditionally, sharing economy is defined as the peer-to-peer economy or collaborative consumption, a sharing of excess resources among individuals. Most studies focus on demand side although the practical business world has explored more possibilities in the upstream activities in the value chain. The objective of our paper is to examine the plausibility of sharing economy in manufacturing by comparing global manufacturing virtual network (GMVN) model and sharing economy (SE) model. Based on the 4C framework, this paper presents the context, cooperation, construct, configuration, capability, and change of the two systems. The contrast shows that GMVN system can be regarded as a form of sharing economy in manufacturing, which suggests that sharing economy is not limited to the consumption field. The similarities and differences of sharing economy in manufacturing and consumption are examined based on the contrast. Some cross implications between the two systems can be found to facilitate sharing and improve efficiency in production and consumption.
