Abstract:In recent years, biometric technology gets extensive attention and significant importance in various domains of life for security and identification systems. The fingerprint modality, which has numerous characteristics including universality, distinctiveness, permanence, collectability, better matching performance and acceptability, is widely used for the authentication and identification of an individual user. In the meanwhile, a fingerprint based biometric system, may suffer from some drawbacks and affected by various physiological factors due to which a potential user may suffer from loss of fingerprints and cannot get authentication and access at different places including banks, immigration departments, national identity card systems and daily check-in check-out systems. In this paper, the aim is to focus on four physiological factors; ageing, skin diseases, finger wrinkles and occupation hazards which are the main causes for the loss of fingerprints of an individual user. The lack of existing literature on the challenges associated with loss of fingerprint features and recognition failure seems to slow down the research progress in this field. Hence, there is a dire need for the state-of-the-art fingerprint applications to effectively address the above highlighted physiological factors for more success. This study provides details about the publically available ageing, skin diseased and wrinkled fingerprint datasets, performance evaluation metrics, furnishes a clear understanding of the impact of physiological factors on fingerprints and describes the existing approaches to handle the identified challenges. Finally, the paper concludes with the possible future directions and points to new prospective on the related field.
