Abstract:Widely considered as an anti-imperialist work, the novel's contrary interpretation is commonly ascribed to the publication of Chinua Achebe's “Racism in Conrad's Heart of Darkness”. The book, perhaps the finest source of information regarding Leopold's crimes in Congo, may be interpreted in a variety of ways; to be clear, Conrad was writing a case study of Leopold's cruel rule of the Congo, not a critique of Western imperialism in general. The purpose of this research is to interpret Heart of Darkness via a variety of postcolonial lenses and to locate it within the Western debate on colonialism. For it is only via contrapuntal readings of this novella that the true nature of Conrad's discourse on racism and colonialism becomes apparent.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to analyze Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness in line with Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of dialogism. Heart of Darkness is Conrad’s novel written in 1899, in which Marlow narrates the story of the voyage he took part in up the Congo River into the Congo State in Africa. This paper analyses Conrad’s text in relation to Bakhtin’s concept of polyphony to show how Conrad represents the various voices and discourses in the narrative through a dialogic pattern that serves to illustrate the thematic concern of the novel. The paper highlights how the voices and discourses that exist both within Marlow’s discourse as well in the other characters’ discourses work together to formulate Conrad’s stance on imperialism and his critique of its ideological manifestations.

Abstract:It is not easy to explore the inner side and the hidden nature of human beings. It is also what has strengthened the relationship between human beings and the issue of imperialism and colonialism and the final stage of colonialism which leads to racism. This paper deals with colonialism, imperialism, and racism in Joseph Conrad's novella, Heart of Darkness. The three stages colonizers implement during colonizing African countries. Modern age and modern literature are shed light on in general and more particularly, modern novel is focused on as it is necessary for the analysis of the novel. Then the terms of colonialism, imperialism, and racism are explored in Heart of Darkness as these are interrelated words having close links to colonization. A postcolonial approach is used to analyze the novella.

Abstract:Joseph Conrad's classic novellaHeart of Darknesshas been the object of a controversy, and harsh condemnations were formulated against the work. Notably, it was targeted as an example of colonialist as well as racist prejudice and prominent author like Achebe and influential theorists like Eagleton and Said have launched far reaching criticisms again this work long considered as part of modern literary canon. This paper argues that these criticisms failed to demonstrate their relevance as literary analysis and ignored crucial features of the novella as a work of art. If we put the story in the context of its creation and read the text in the way as Conrad intended much of the accusations would appear superficial and wide of the mark. Moreover, it is argued that literary figures should be judged by themselves for their aesthetic values as literary creation and not as prototypes of some social category. The specificity of a literary work lies in the fact that it is fundamentally different from political and sociological discourse.

Abstract:The world is commonly divided into the West and the East, two parts that are inherently not alike in many aspects but are tied in one way or another. However, the clash between the two led to the superiority of European powers and hence created a point of view from which Western imperialists understood the Orient and the relation they had with it. Edward Said gave the term “Orientalism” to refer to this mode of representation of the Orient from Western imperial powers’ imagination, while Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is a novella that is exactly centered around the interplay between colonialist and natives from the colonial viewpoint, or in other words, their Orientalist prism. In Heart of Darkness, Conrad shows much sympathy for Africans’ suffering and harsh condemnation of the imperialism. However, at the same time he unwittingly assumes sort of Western White’s superiority and commits the myth of imperialistic ideology by distorting the images of African land as wild, dark, barbarous, mysterious and backward, African people as barbaric, savagery, greedy and primitive while African culture as wicked and horrible.

Abstract:This research paper highlights Joseph Conrad’s satirical portrayal of "The Heart of Darkness" and shows how the white European people, the colonizers, take their lead in the novel to be civilized enough to go over the world and civilize people. Among those people the black people of Dark Continent Africa who were marginalized in the novel and to be called ‘uncivilized’ and ‘savage’ people. Some great empires like the British Empire used the cover of the civilization so as to achieve their desires over the third world countries. Joseph Conrad in his Heart of Darkness talked about these important themes, by showing the hypocritical ways that the British Empire used to colonize the third world countries and how did they use wicked plans to convince the world with their occupation. The British Empire colonized Africa so as to exploit their main resources, especially ivory, to use them in their manufactories. Also, this study aims to show how the British Empire used the cover of religion so as to convince the world of their deeds and to make them legal. This study focuses on the real ‘savagery’ concealing under the cover of ‘civilization’ and the real darkness existing inside the veil of white men. This study is based on historical research linked with a political background of imperialism. This study comes to its conclusion by showing the wicked ways that great empires used to colonize other countries, like Great British, and their policy to spread their control.

Abstract:Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is often presented as one of the harshest indictments of the colonial entreprise in Africa. Yet, a large number of critics consider that it perpetuates the colonial discourse in several ways. The aim of this paper is to critically look at the colonial discourse in Conrad’s novella from a postcolonial and Marxist standpoint. To be specific, we demonstrate the limitations and contradictions of the theory of the civilising mission, which portrays Africa as the “heart of darkness” and Africans as uncivilised individuals who need to be enlightened by Europeans. The analysis concludes that, above their moral corruption, the colonists, through the atrocity of their actions and their greed, are a perfect reflection of a Western civilisation corrupted by the capitalist spirit that underpins it. In this sense, they are proof that the theory of the civilising mission is a fallacy. The real savages are those who think that they bear the light of civilisation. Black people are savages only in the Western imagination. In reality, they are the victims of the savagery, the darkness inherent in Western materialistic culture.

Abstract:Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness intensively presents modernist particularity shown in the form of linguistic obscurity. This paper draws on Friedrich Schleiermacher’s hermeneutics to argue that it has latent meanings and is presented through two categories: “silenced language” and “voiced language.” The former reveals the deception, death and hurt brought by colonial conquest. The latter is best exemplified by Kurtz’s Intended typified as an archetype of the Victorian woman, by which Joseph Conrad intends to criticize the self-deception of many in the colonial era. In short, linguistic obscurity respectively reveals Conrad’s critique of colonialism and his concern for humanity from the two different paths.

Abstract:Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness portrays the inhabitants of Congo from non-human perceptions. Charles Marlow’s observation and analysis of the citizens of Congo are based on prejudiced viewpoints and pre-defined white archetypes. The chief motive of the Belgians was to justify the native as ferocious and collect the ivory from Congo. Natives did not recognize the worth of tusk while the white men ship it to Europe to brand ornamental articles. This representation of the Congolese annihilates the identity of the native, depicting them as barbaric to accomplish their trade motive. Marlow’s narrative attempts to commodify the natives and display the white people as the embodiment of civilization. Human beings treat non-human behavior to the inhabitant in the designation of civilization. The narrator’s perspective is instrumental to the authorial voice in abolishing the human identity of the people of Congo. His white racial lens constructs the nature and character of the citizens. The general world of the white as represented by Marlow delivers the people of Congo a forceful encyclopaedia of education and civilization. Then develops cultural dominance comprising reason, intelligence, and wisdom. The forceful negation demolishes the real identity of the natives and hence creates a racial verdict. The firm outlook of the white Europeans displays the vivacious demarcation for exploitation. Hence, the text establishes a world of hierarchy among the people living in the same geographical location. The depiction of predisposed attitude and deficit positioning for ivory trading thrashes natives. Such doings cause revolt in the world.

Abstract:This article aims to explore the background of the dispute started by Chinua Achebe in his famous essay “An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness”. The novel in ques- tion has become the subject of the dispute on whether it is deserving of being considered a great work of art. The reasons behind Achebe’s claim that it is not are the dehumanization of Africans found in various scenes throughout the novel, as well as the depiction of Africa itself as the barbaric and hostile other to civilized Europe. As in any such claim, while some support it, others find it faulty. There are those such as Achebe who would judge Conrad for the same reasons others, such as Bratlinger, Said, Mnthali, or Ngugi Wa Thiong’o, see him as the product of his time. This article will attempt to explore some of these claims and, if possible, determine the extent of their validity.

Abstract:For decades, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899) has been subject to different readings and interpretations. Transcending the boundaries of time and place, Conrad’s novella is still a relevant text for modern critical readings. Although many critics have studied characters referring to different theories and perspectives, characterization is still a rich source of meaning. This paper aims to study the characters in Heart of Darkness and examine Conrad’s narrative strategy in terms of binarism and doubling. The paper also explores how, despite their depiction as powerful characters, Marlow and Kurtz show symptoms of failure and trauma while the black female character, usually depicted as an emblem of absence and negation, shows signs of power and resilience despite her muteness and minor presence. Feminist, Psychoanalytical and trauma theories are referred to in the revisiting of characters in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.

Abstract:Abstract This essay argues that the collapse of Empire in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is troped as the erosion of textuality. Five key instances of this textual collapse occur in the novel: the maps Marlow reads as a child, the accounting books, the seaman’s manual, the Kurtz Report and the Company papers. There are also a few minor instances of similar textual collapses, which also come to attention here. The essay notes that in each case the text’s significance is lost or altered in specific ways, and this contributes to the erosion of the authority of the text.

Abstract:The paper attempts to study the way the character of Mr. Kurtz is materialised in Heart of Darkness. The portrayal of Mr. Kurtz’s character is studied and analysed in this research work with reference to two of the major ways of character portrayal – direct definition and indirect presentation. The direct mode of description refers to the description of a character directly and explicitly with the help of a particular word, sentence, or event, whereas in indirect presentation, a character is materialized in terms of various means, such as the action, the speech, the external appearance and even the environment. The paper with references to the textual examples from Heart of Darkness, endeavours to explore how Mr. Kurtz’s character is sketched out using the two modes of textual representation.

Abstract:This study discussed the nature of Conrad's fictional narrative style in forming collective images whose significance varies according to the angle from which he looks, as it directs the readers' attention towards the theoretical issues that he tests in his writings. It represents a kind of intellectual drama involving imaginative language, which assumes that Conrad discovered and tested his literary theories while writing the text, although he does not use critical language easily identifiable in his writings when it comes to establishing his convictions as it is characterized by a lack of clarity of purpose and a kind of philosophical narrative, as described by some critics, the hidden aspects included in the text extend to the reality of the characters and their being, as if they were living in a state of uncertainty, especially in the character of Captain Marlow in Lord Jim's novel.

Abstract:Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness portrays an intimate connection between the realm of femininity and darkness. This paper explores Marlow's motives for deviation of truth from Mr Kurtz's Intended. Marlow and Kurtz deceive women to attain their goals, keeping them out of the pragmatic world and reaffirming their status as the 'second sex' or, more precisely, as the 'lost sex'. This study excavates Simone de Beauvoir's concept of 'the Other' in her seminal work The Second Sex. Examining how Marlow's distortion of the truth intersects with Beauvoir's exploration of the patriarchal tendency to marginalize and objectify women opens new opportunities to resolve the reason behind his deliberate deception and distortion of the truth to Mr Kurtz's 'Intended.'

Abstract:In Joseph Conrad’s novel Under Western Eyes (1911), Razumov is a kinless university student in St. Petersburg who involuntarily becomes the government’s agent as regard to espionage because of an unwelcome visit from the revolutionist student Haldin. This paper makes use of C.T. Watts’ article “Under Western Eyes: The Haunted Haunts” published in 2008 as a framework to investigate Razumov’s psychological journey: beginning with his decision to betray Haldin through to the consequential action of making a confession to the latter’s sister, Nathalie. Watts’ article explores both the haunting and exorcist aspects of the novel upon its author, characters and, possibly. the reader. The article primarily focuses on how Conrad’s novel intentionally mimics Crime and Punishment (1866). Several aspects of the narrative reveal to us that Conrad failed in avenging the haunting effect Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s work had upon him. In this paper, the rationale behind Razumov’s confession will be investigated in understanding how both physical and mental exhaustion stimulate moral struggles and alter one’s assumed ideology. Emphasis will be made on the transformation of Razumov in terms of the effect of acquiring domestic connections and arriving in different geographical locations as the plot complicates.

Abstract:This chapter focuses on the representations of evil in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and argues that despite appearances, colonial evil is not extrinsic to Marlow’s voice and that it inheres in his very worldview. It draws out the implicit evil in Marlow’s colonialism by close attention to the muted concepts and vague ideas in his intimate inner voice. Marlow’s affective but uncritical formulations of “idea” and “work” reflect colonial ideology in unsettling ways, secretly allowing for the justification of criminal, evil forms of colonial practice.
