Abstract:On the basis of environmental magnetism study on soils formed on Quaternary sediments in Yangtze River val-ley, the soil magnetic enhancement and its mechanism were discussed. Results showed that soils formed on Quater-nary sediments exhibited a distinct ferrimagnetic profile with the magnetic susceptibility enhancement of soil hori-zons with respect to that of parent materials. It is suggested that formation of pedogenic ferrimagnetic minerals re-sulted in enhancement of magnetic susceptibility in soils. In addition, the pedogenic ferrimagnetic minerals are most-ly superparamagnetic(SP) and stable single domain(SSD)grains. It is found that highly significant relationships be-tween the magnetic susceptibility(χ) values of the samples and frequency dependent susceptibilityand be-tween χ values of samples and anhysteretic susceptibilityIt is suggested thatχ can be considered an indica-tor for the environmental fluctuation recorded in soils. Results also suggested thatvalue of 5％ can be regardedas an indicator to reflect the formation of pedogenic SP and SSD ferrimagnetic minerals in the continuous pedogenicdevelopment of soils. Thus,magnetic susceptibility can be used to study the Quaternary environmental changes.

Abstract:Information support of modern agriculture and ecology forms a demand for ever higher requirements for efficiency and density of the sampling network. This fact determines the spread of high-performance methods of soil research, among which are magnetometric ones. However, these methods have a number of limitations associated with the existence in soils of ferromagnets of non-pedogenic nature. The purpose of the study is to show the patterns of spatial and profile distribution of soils with high values of magnetic characteristics, inherited from parent rocks as a result of pedogenesis. The research used: determination of specific magnetic susceptibility using kappabridge KLY-2, determination of volumetric magnetic susceptibility with kappameter KT-5 and induction of magnetic field by proton magnetometer MP 203. The study was conducted at two objects located in the central part of the Ukrainian shield region. Studies have shown that soils developed on the weathering crust are characterized by certain features of their magnetic properties. First of all, it depends on the petromagnetic parameters of the source rocks. On magnetic rocks, the MS of soils is determined primarily by inherited magnetic minerals. The magnetic susceptibility of such soils has two maxima. The first is in the upper part of the profile, where it is determined by the sum of pedogenic and terrigenous magnets. The second is located in the lower part of the profile, which consists almost entirely of weathering products.
Mineral Magnetic Properties of A Weathering Sequence of Soils Derived from Basalt in Eastern China

Abstract:The magnetic properties and magnetic mineralogy of a weathering sequence of soils developed on basalt parent material from eastern China, were studied by rock magnetism, X-ray diffraction and soil chemical analyses to establish the connection between mineral magnetic properties and pedogenic development in a subtropical region. The magnetic susceptibility of soils formed on basalt varied greatly and did not increase with the degree of pedogenic development. The frequency-dependent susceptibility (χfd) values of soils ranged from 1.0 to 11.1% and increased with the pedogenic development. Highly significant linear relationship was found between the frequency-dependent susceptibility and the Fed content (R2=0.683) and Fed/Fet ratio (R2=0.780) in soils, indicating that pedogenic SP ferrimagnetic grains were associated with enrichment of the secondary iron oxide minerals in the weathering process of soil. Rock magnetism analysis showed that the major magnetic carriers in the weakly weathered soil profiles are magnetite and/or maghemite, and the highly developed soil profiles are generally enriched in magnetite/maghemite grains of pedogenic origin and the magnetically hard haematite, indicating that the magnetic component was transformed from a ferrimagnetic phase (magnetite) to antiferromagnetic phase (hematite) during pedogenic development. Results indicated that some of the magnetic parameters of soils, in this case χfd, can be useful for pedogenic comparisons and age correlations in the weathering sequence of soil. It is thus suggested that multiparameter rock magnetic investigations represent a more powerful approach for pedogenesis.
Magnetic Measurement Characterisation Of Red Earth Profile In Eastern China And Its Environmental Implications

Abstract:Environmental magnetism parameters, including magnetic susceptibility (chi), anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM), Frequency dependent susceptibility (chi(fd)), magnetization parameters (F+ xmT) and demagnetization parameters (F (- xmT)), have been measured on a red earth profile from eastern China. The variation curves of ferrimagnetic mineral concentration, mineralogy assemblages and grain size of red earth profile with depth before and after iron oxides were removed by dithionite-citrate system buffered with sodium bicarbonate (DCB) were illustrated. On the basis of the magnetic properties of red earth, three distinctive stratigraphic horizons have been identified. The spherulitic magnetic particles were separated by magnetic separation method, indicating that the contribution of magnetism in red earth is maghemite, hematite and goethite. Results suggested that enhancement of magnetism and shift in magnetic domain and mineralogy assemblage are correlated with pedogenic environments. Frequency dependent susceptibility and the fraction of magnetic susceptibility that is removed by DCB treatment are attributed to the pedogenic ferrimagnetic component, suggesting that they are index of soil development degree. Thus, magnetism of red earth, an easily measured soil attribute, can be used to evaluate the environmental change of Quaternary in southern China.

Mineral Magnetic Properties of Chinese Paddy Soils and Its Pedogenic Implications

Abstract:Magnetic susceptibility (MS) of paddy soils (Hydragric Anthrosols) and their corresponding dryland soils formed on the same parent materials in Zhejiang Province of Eastern China were measured in order to understand better magnetic profile discrimination and pedogenic magnetic minerals in paddy soils. Magnetic measurements showed that the MS values of paddy soils were much lower than those of dryland soils formed on the same parent materials. The higher the MS value of the original dryland soil is, the more remarkable the decrease in the MS value is when the soil is put under rice cultivation. Gleyed paddy soils exhibited very low MS value (<20×10−8m3kg−1) and frequency-dependent susceptibility (<3%), as well as greater enhancement of MS on heating. Waterlogging incubation experiment indicated that the MS loss of soil mainly occurred in day 15 to day 75 after water saturation. During the reduction period of 180days, the overall MS losses of soils developed on Quaternary red clay and alluvial deposit were 78% and 80%, respectively. The MS values of various particle size fractions in paddy soils were also much lower than those of dryland soils formed on the same parent materials. The largest loss in MS value occurred in the clay fraction of paddy soil, which suggested that magnetic grains in clay fraction were readily dissolved. Thermomagnetic (κ–T) analysis indicated that paddy soils had very different and complex behavior of MS with increasing temperature, which can be explained by the predominance of ferric oxide in a poorly crystalline phase. Thermal behavior of magnetic susceptibility suggested that ferrihydrite was present in all profiles of paddy soils. The illuvial horizon of paddy soils was enriched with crystalline nano-scale iron oxide phase (mainly goethite, hematite, and maghemite/magnetite). The oxidation and reduction cycle in paddy soils could lead to the formation of nanocrystalline iron oxide, which provided a new pathway to explain the formation of pedogenic magnetic minerals. Paddy soils showed an obvious magnetic profile differentiation due to the difference in soil pedo-hydrological regimes. Three distribution patterns of MS profiles could be identified in paddy soils. The differentiation of MS in paddy soils can be used to describe soil profile characterization, identify diagnostic horizon, and interpret soil hydrological regimes. These findings provided new tool for profile description, type identification, hydrological regime diagnosis of paddy soils. Our results also help understand magnetic dynamic of soils caused by waterlogging process.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Determining sources, quantities and travel distances of eroding soil is of increasing importance given its impact on‐ and off‐site, the sediment‐associated transport of nutrients, metals and micro‐organisms and the ongoing need to provide data for soil erosion model development and validation. Many soil tracers have been developed; however, most comprise foreign materials, such as fluorescent beads and rare earth oxides, which cast doubts on the validity of tracing results given their different physical characteristics. To avoid these problems, we have investigated the potential of soil, which has been heated under reducing conditions to enhance its ferrimagnetic content, as a soil erosion tracer; while the technique has been used successfully to trace river sediment it has not been successfully applied to soil erosion studies. For a suite of 16 magnetic concentration‐dependent properties, values were found to be significantly greater, by at least one order of magnitude, after heating, both for the bulk soil and nine individual particle size fractions. Individual size fractions could be differentiated using two different magnetic properties, thus illustrating the technique's potential to provide information on particle size‐specific erosion. Soil box experiments demonstrated the potential for both in situ measurement of magnetic susceptibility and laboratory measurement of the magnetic properties of eroded sediment, to trace and quantify soil erosion. Thus, heated soil, with artificially‐enhanced ferrimagnetic properties, is successfully demonstrated to have great potential as a size‐specific, cost‐effective and representative soil erosion tracer. Abstract:This paper reports the use of mineral magnetic measurement techniques to characterize the iron oxide assemblage within soils of varying parent material type and water regime from subtropical region in Zhejiang Province, China. Results show that dryland soils formed on Quaternary red clay, limestone, arenaceous shale, and diluvium, exhibit a distinct ferrimagnetic profile with a magnetic susceptibility (chi) enhancement in surface horizon. This enhancement is interpreted as being due to pedogenic superparamagnetic (SP) ferrimagnetic grains, which is supported by a higher frequency dependent susceptibility (chi(fd)) values. The chi and chi(fd) have highly significant positive linear relationship with dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DCB) extractable iron (Fed) content. The upper horizon of paddy soil has extremely lower chi and chi(fd) values than dryland soils formed on the same parent material. Soil with poorly-drained condition has distinctly lower absolute chi and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) value than associated well-drained soil. It indicates that reduction state is an important factor responsible for loss of SP ferrimagnetic minerals in soils.

Abstract:Magnetic studies of loess–paleosol sequences have shown that the magnetic properties of loess and its parent material are sensitive to weathering degree. However, the relationship between magnetic properties and weathering processes in red soils of southern China remains unclear due to the diversity of parent rocks and the influence of climate. This study focused on red soils developed on weakly magnetic sandstone, in tropical and subtropical regions of Yunnan, China. The principal element content, magnetic susceptibility, temperature-dependent susceptibility curve (χ–T curve, where χ represents the magnetic susceptibility at the corresponding temperature during the heating and cooling process of the sample, and T represents the temperature during the heating and cooling process.), hysteresis loop and Isothermal Remanent Magnetization (IRM) of the samples were determined, the weathering characteristics and magnetic properties of profile samples were analyzed, and their relationship was examined, as well as the impact of climate change on fine-grained ferrimagnetic minerals and magnetic properties. The results revealed that red soils developed on weakly magnetic sandstone exhibited significant correlations between three magnetic indices, low-frequency magnetic susceptibility (χ lf ), frequency-dependent susceptibility (χ fd ), (χ post-pre + χ d )/χ para , and the silica-sesquioxide ratio (SAF), indicating that these indices can be used to assess soil weathering. Additionally, this study proposed a new index based on the 1 < Log10B h < 1.5 mT component obtained from decomposition of the IRM curve, which can also be used to assess soil weathering. The enhancement of magnetic properties in red soils along a single profile was found to be related to the increase in the content of fine-grained ferrimagnetic com-ponents controlled by weathering. Comparing the two climatic regions, it was found that in Yunnan, China, as the climate changes from subtropical humid to tropical humid, the weathering of the red soil profiles becomes stronger, and the fine-grained ferrimagnetic components increase, indirectly enhancing the magnetic properties of red soils.

Abstract:Magnetic enhancement of A and B horizons during soil development is a common phenomenon. To better understand the exact mechanism for the magnetic enhancement, especially the mineral transformation pathways, systematic rock magnetic studies were conducted on a Xeralf chronosequence in northwestern Spain. A positive correlation was found between the average grain size and the concentration of pedogenic maghemite particles with the exception of some A horizons, in which multiple factors seem to influence the nature and concentration of neoformed ferrimagnets. It is argued that the interaction between the positively charged iron oxides and the anionic ligands present in the solution of these acidic soils plays an important role in this respect. The time trends of the average grain size of pedogenic ferrimagnets and the strong correlation between the concentrations of hematite and maghemite in the magnetically enhanced horizons (A and B) are consistent with the hypothesis of a gradual formation of maghemite (later converted into hematite) via a precursor (most likely ferrihydrite). Therefore, this study provides strong evidence for the dynamic evolution of magnetic minerals upon pedogenesis.
New magnetic proxies to reveal source and bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soils

Abstract:Environmental magnetism plays an important role in monitoring heavy metal pollution, but most studies are confined to indicating only the levels of heavy metals using magnetic parameters. This study established new magnetic proxies for accurately depicting the sources and bioavailability of heavy metals in contaminated soils. We observed different relationships between χ and SIRM in the soils contaminated by non-ferrous metal smelting compared to those polluted by coal combustion and steel smelting. Furthermore, we found that the soft magnetic components (IRMsoft) in the soils were mainly controlled by the non-ferrous metal smelting activities, while the hard magnetic components (HIRM) might be affected by the iron erosion. These new magnetic proxies enriched the source composition spectrum and improved the accuracy of the source apportionment analyses (principal component analysis and positive matrix factorization), yielding a result that was comparable to that by Pb isotope fingerprinting. We also found strong relationships between magnetic parameters (especially IRMsoft) and bioavailable fractions of heavy metals, indicating that magnetic measurement may be a powerful tool for monitoring the bioavailability of heavy metals. This study expands the application fields of magnetism in environmental science research.
Mineral Magnetism to Probe into the Nature of Palaeomagnetic Signals of Subtropical Red Soil Sequences in Southern China

Abstract:SUMMARY Magnetic polarity stratigraphy has proved to be useful in dating of both marine and terrestrial sedimentary sequences over the world. However, the reliability of magnetostratigraphic results of red soil sequences in subtropical southern China has been found to be variable in different regions. To probe into the capabilities of recording magnetic polarity stratigraphy in the red soils, three red soil sequences have been selected for detailed mineral magnetic, petrographic and/or palaeomagnetic analyses. These include the Xuancheng and Qiliting sequences, which are located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Damei sequence in the Bose Basin near the Tropic of Cancer. Palaeomagnetic results indicate that the Xuancheng sequence has recorded the Brunhes Chron and the late Matuyama Chron, including a short interval probably representing the Santa Rosa geomagnetic event. The Xuancheng and Qiliting sequences have faithfully recorded the palaeogeomagnetic field behaviour while the Damei sequence has failed. Detailed mineral magnetic and petrographic measurements suggest that four magnetic minerals (magnetite, maghemite, haematite and goethite) are contained in the three studied sequences, but the characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) carriers are different. For the Xuancheng and Qiliting samples, the ChRM carriers are magnetite and haematite, which are all of detrital origin. However, the ChRMs of Damei samples are carried by pedogenic haematite with an unblocking temperature (TB) of about 630–640 °C, which has overprinted the primary remanence of the Damei red soil deposits. This pedogenic haematite is mainly produced by chemical weathering, which is commonly intensified by the climate of high temperature and rainfall. It further suggests that climatic conditions have a great effect on the nature of palaeomagnetic signals of the red soil sequences. In addition, the red pigment components in the red soils may be used to indicate the degree of remagnetization.

Abstract:Under aerobic conditions, the A and B horizons of soils are magnetically enhanced due to neoformation of ferrimagnets through pedogenesis. This study systematically investigated soils developed on calcarenites of Neogene age in southern Spain to determine the dominant factors controlling the soil magnetism. Geochemical and clay mineral analyses indicate that aeolian dust significantly contribute to the A and B horizon material of the Spanish soil. Nevertheless, the magnetic enhancement of soils can be simply attributed to the pedogenically produced ferrimagnets in-situ. Therefore, the magnetism of Spanish soils is still linked to paleoclimatic variations regardless of the complexities of aeolian inputs from the Northwestern Africa.
An integrated study of the grain-size-dependent magnetic mineralogy of the Chinese loess/paleosol and its environmental significance

Abstract:[1] To investigate the grain- size- dependent properties of the magnetic minerals in Chinese loess/ paleosol samples ( Touxiangdao, Xining, Qinghai province, China), magnetic extracts were divided into two size fractions by gravitational settling. On the basis of hysteresis measurements, thermal demagnetization of low- temperature saturation isothermal remanent magnetization, and nonmagnetic studies ( SEM and XRD) we identified magnetic phases both in the grain size fractions of the magnetic extracts and in the less magnetic residues to provide more accurate and complete descriptions of all the magnetic components in the bulk natural samples. The results show that the oxidation degree ( nonstoichiometry) of magnetic minerals is strongly affected by both grain size and the paleoclimatic environment in which they were deposited and altered. In ascending order of the oxidation degree of our samples, we find ( 1) loess- coarse particles ( LC) are multidomain ( MD) magnetite with slight oxidation, ( 2) paleosol- coarse ( PC) particles are also MD magnetite but with a higher oxidation degree compared to LC, ( 3) loess- fine ( LF) particles are pseudo- single domain ( PSD) magnetite with a high oxidation degree, and ( 4) paleosol- fine ( PF) particles are PSD maghemite. Single domain ( SD) and superparamagnetic ( SP) maghemite mainly stay in the residues. Further thermomagnetic analysis of PF ( PSD maghemite) revealed that this natural maghemite has a Curie temperature identical to that of magnetite and that the conversion efficiency of transformation from maghemite to hematite is only about 50% after a 700 degrees C heating/ cooling cycle. These new results identify the sources of multicomponent NRM in Chinese loess sequences as well as clarify the paleoenviromental and paleoclimatic controls on the remanence components.

Abstract:A detailed magnetic study of urban soils in Hangzhou City, China, was carried out using combined environmental magnetism and rock magnetism techniques. Magnetic measurements showed that those urban soils have a significant magnetic enhancement, which were characterized by higher magnetic susceptibility (average 128X10(-8)m(3).kg(-1)) and magnetic remanence, and low frequency-dependent susceptibility (average 3.6%, N=182). Magnetic susceptibility values of urban soils showed highly significant negative correlation with frequency-dependent susceptibility, indicating that the mechanism of the magnetic enhancement of urban soils is different from contribution of pedogenic ferromagrietic minerals in nature soils. Magnetic susceptibility values of urban soils, on the other hand, have significantly positive correlation with Soft IRM (IRM20T) and saturation isotherm remanent magnetization (SIRM), suggesting that ferrimagnetic minerals are the main magnetic carriers. The combined rock magnetism (acquisition curves of IRM, temperature-dependent susceptibility and hysteresis measurement) and SEM/EDX (scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis) revealed that magnetic mineralogy of urban soils is dominated by magnetite-like and hematite-like phases. The hysteresis parameters suggested that they are present mainly in the pseudo-single domain (PSD) and multidomain (MD) grains, which is attributed to input of anthropogenic magnetic grains from industrial activity, fuel combustion and traffic pollution. This finding suggested that magnetic measurements could be used as potential tools for monitoring soil pollution, mapping spatial distribution of pollution, and differentiating sources of pollutants in urban soils.

Abstract:Mineral magnetism of the Chinese loess has been investigated for more than 20 years. Although there is a consensus that the neoformation of fine-grained maghemite particles in the superparamagnetic (SP) and single-domain (SD) grain size regions accounts for the magnetic enhancement in the Chinese paleosols, quantitative retrieval of paleoclimatic signals in terms of rock magnetic proxies is still a subject of debate. The ambiguities arise from the inherent complexities of magnetic proxies as well as the multiple factors that control the pedogenic processes. Therefore, a better description of the magnetic assemblage (including its mineralogy, grain size distribution and stoichiometry) of two distinct origins (pedogenic and eolian) can help us better understand mechanisms behind variations in magnetic proxies at different timescales, in order to link them to the paleoclimatic processes. This review focuses on recent developments in loess magnetism, and carefully evaluates merits and limitations of rock magnetic proxies. Furthermore, several currently unsolved problems are addressed.
Mineral Magnetism Potentially Indicating Degrees of Soil Gleization and Their Implications for Tracing Sediment Sources: Inferences for a Small Catchment on Guizhou Plateau, SW China

Abstract:Ten soil profiles were sampled from a small catchment and two sediment cores were retrieved from a reservoir built in it on the Guizhou Plateau, SW China. Mineral magnetism measurements, particle size, TOC and TN analysis were performed on the soils and sediments. Cs-137 activity analysis was made for one of the cores. Precipitation data were collected for 1957-2017. Vegetation cover and land-use data were acquired for 11 or 12 years included in this period by interpreting remote-sensing images. Magnetic characteristics of topsoil suggest that soils closely around the reservoir were generally strongly gleyed due to lower-lying positions and more frequent waterlog and those distant to it were less or not gleyed owing to better drainage. Particle-size, TOC and C/N data support this inference. The average of chi(lf) , chi(ARM) and IRM300mT/SIRM is only 41 10(-8) m(3) kg(-1), 144 10(-8) m(3) kg(-1) and 0.84 for the topsoil of the strongly gleyed profiles, while the average is high (95 10(-8) m(3) kg(-1), 380 10(-8) m(3) kg(-1) and 0.92, respectively) for the topsoil of the less- or non-gleyed profiles. With the aid of the other data, the sediment magnetism in comparison of the topsoil's suggests varying contributions of the less- or non-gleyed soils versus strongly gleyed soils to the sediments with changes in precipitation and land use. When rainfall was low and vegetation was sparse, contributions to the sediments from the weakly gleyed and non-gleyed soils farther away from the reservoir were bigger. When rainfall decreased and vegetation was better developed particularly in the fields distant to the reservoir, contributions from the strongly gleyed soils distributed closely around the reservoir would relatively increase while those from the remote and weakly gleyed and non-gleyed soils decrease. These results suggest that gleization may strengthen spatial magnetic variability of catchment soils and help to infer sediment sources.
