Abstract:Extensive efforts have been made in designing large multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) arrays. Nevertheless, improvements in conventional antenna characteristics cannot ensure significant MIMO performance improvement in realistic multipath environments. Array decorrelation techniques have been proposed, achieving correlation reductions by either tilting the antenna beams or shifting the phase centers away from each other. Hence, these methods are mainly limited to MIMO terminals with small arrays. To avoid such problems, this work proposes a decorrelation optimization technique based on phase correcting surface (PCS) that can be applied to large MIMO arrays, enhancing their MIMO performances in a realistic (non-isotropic) multipath environment. First, by using a near-field channel model and an optimization algorithm, a near-field phase distribution improving the MIMO capacity is obtained. Then the PCS (consisting of square elements) is used to cover the array’s aperture, achieving the desired near-field phase distribution. Two examples demonstrate the effectiveness of this PCS-based near-field optimization technique. One is a 1 × 4 dual-polarized patch array (working at 2.4 GHz) covered by a 2 × 4 PCS with 0.6λ center-to-center distance. The other is a 2 × 8 dual-polarized dipole array, for which a 4 × 8 PCS with 0.4λ center-to-center distance is designed. Their MIMO capacities can be effectively enhanced by 8% and 10% in single-cell and multi-cell scenarios, respectively. The PCS has insignificant effects on mutual coupling, matching, and the average radiation efficiency of the patch array, and increases the antenna gain by about 2.5 dB while keeping broadside radiations to ensure good cellular coverage, which benefits the MIMO performance of the array. The proposed technique offers a new perspective for improving large MIMO arrays in realistic multipath in a statistical sense.
Orthogonality-Based User and Receive Antenna Selection for MIMO Broadcast Channels

Abstract:In MIMO broadcast channels, the Block Diagonalization (BD) transmit precoding performs better than the Zero-Forcing (ZF) transmit precoding when the user equipment has multiple receive antennas and can support multiple data streams. The number of users simultaneously supported by BD is much less than the total number of users in the system, so selecting proper users and/or receive antennas is important to achieve high overall sum capacity. So far, the capacity-based and norm-based user and receive antenna selection algorithms are proposed, which are greedy based and have much lower complexity than the brute-force based algorithms. In this paper, the orthogonality-based user and receive antenna selection algorithms are employed. The idea of the algorithm is simple, however, we show by detailed complexity analysis and extensive simulations that the orthogonality-based user and receive antenna selection achieves much better complexity and performance tradeoff than the existing capacity-based and norm-based algorithms. So, the orthogonality-based algorithms are more attractive for practical MIMO broadcast systems.

Abstract:Reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output can provide performance gains over traditional MIMO by reshaping the channels, i.e., introducing more channel realizations. In this paper, we focus on the achievable rate maximization pattern design for reconfigurable MIMO systems. Firstly, we introduce the matrix representation of pattern reconfigurable MIMO (PR-MIMO), based on which a pattern design problem is formulated. To further reveal the effect of the radiation pattern on the wireless channel, we consider pattern design for both the single-pattern case where the optimized radiation pattern is the same for all the antenna elements, and the multi-pattern case where different antenna elements can adopt different radiation patterns. For the single-pattern case, we show that the pattern design is equivalent to a redistribution of gains among all scattering paths, and an eigenvalue optimization based solution is obtained. For the multi-pattern case, we propose a sequential optimization framework with manifold optimization and eigenvalue decomposition to obtain near-optimal solutions. Numerical results validate the superiority of PR-MIMO systems over traditional MIMO in terms of achievable rate, and also show the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Array Optimization for MIMO Radar by Genetic Algorithms

Abstract:In this paper, technique for the array optimization of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is investigated. The primacy focus of this study is improved two-way pattern performance of MIMO radar. Genetic algorithms (GA) is applied to the array optimization in order to reduce the peaks of side lobes (PSL) by acting on the elements positions. By using the property that the two-way pattern of MIMO radar equals to the product of the transmitting and receiving beam patterns, the computational complexity of algorithms in this paper is significantly decreased. For MIMO radar system with separate transmitting and receiving arrays, and both of them are composed of 25-element with an overall aperture of 50lambda (lambda being the wavelength), the two-way pattern obtained in this paper with PSL do not exceed -28.65 dB, which meets the requirement of project applications.

Abstract:The technology of Multipe-input Multiple-output-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(MIMO-OFDM) has been documented as an attractive means to achieve high data rate transmissions and high reliability by diversity techniques.In this paper,the four-transmit antenna and multiple-receive system based on MIMO-OFDM technique is designed. The orthogonal space-time block coding technology with low complexity is used,which can solve the problem of multiple antenna system that with the sum of transmit and receive antenna increasing,the coding and decoding methods become more complex.Besides,the maximum likelihood decoding is employed and multi-phase shift keying is used.Simulation results indicate that it has better error performance and higher spectral efficiency.

Abstract:In recent years, thanks to the advances in meta-materials, the concept of continuous-aperture MIMO (CAP-MIMO) is reinvestigated to achieve improved communication performance with limited antenna apertures. Unlike the classical MIMO composed of discrete antennas, CAP-MIMO has a quasi-continuous antenna surface, which is expected to generate any current distribution (i.e., pattern) and induce controllable spatial electromagnetic (EM) waves. In this way, the information is directly modulated on the EM waves, which makes it promising to approach the ultimate capacity of finite apertures. The pattern design is the key factor to determine the communication performance of CAP-MIMO, but it has not been well studied in the literature. In this paper, we develop pattern-division multiplexing (PDM) to design the patterns for CAP-MIMO. Specifically, we first study and model a typical multi-user CAP-MIMO system, which allows us to formulate the sum-rate maximization problem. Then, we develop a general PDM technique to transform the design of the continuous pattern functions to the design of their projection lengths on finite orthogonal bases, which can overcome the challenge of functional programming. Utilizing PDM, we further propose a block coordinate descent (BCD) based pattern design scheme to solve the formulated sum-rate maximization problem. Simulation results show that, the sum-rate achieved by the proposed scheme is higher than that achieved by benchmark schemes, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the developed PDM for CAP-MIMO.

Abstract:We revisit the design procedure of printed four element pattern diversity antennas, starting from the concept of printed dipoles on dielectric substrates arranged in a rotationally symmetric configuration. We systematically modify this basic dipole-based configuration to realize electrical miniaturization, wideband performance and sectorial beam-forming. Especially, we show that by utilizing stub-like structures analogous to neutralization lines, the port-to-port mutual coupling can be significantly reduced in the working band, without gain-reduction or pattern distortion.

Abstract:In this communication, a compact pattern reconfigurable dual-antenna array is designed at 2.65 GHz for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) terminal applications, such as laptops. Each antenna is composed of two layers, i.e., the monopole layer and the planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) layer. By switching the p-i-n diodes on each layer, its radiation patterns can be varied between conical and boresight patterns. Two such identical antennas are placed side by side on a common ground plane for MIMO application, providing altogether four operating modes. The center-to-center separation between the antennas is 0.25 wavelength, to keep the overall array compact. To facilitate an isolation of above 17 dB over all the modes for this compact array, two decoupling techniques based on the decoupling slits and the shielding wall are effectively combined. The envelope correlation coefficients (ECCs) of the far-field patterns in the four modes are below 0.05 in free space, and below 0.1 for most cases in the indoor and outdoor scenarios. The only exception is the monopole-PIFA mode in the outdoor scenario, but the ECC is still below 0.3 for this case. The measured efficiencies of the antennas are between -1.7 (68%) and -0.7 dB (85%) for all the modes. Therefore, good diversity and MIMO performances are expected for the proposed design.

Abstract:MIMO ambiguity function integrates the effects of transmit waveforms and array geometry and characterizes the resolution properties of radar systems in the range, Doppler, and spatial domains. This paper considers the joint design of transmit waveforms and transmit array antenna positions based on optimization of the MIMO ambiguity function. Two design issues are considered here, one is to find orthogonal waveform set and transmit array geometry to obtain the highest resolution and low sidelobes, and the other is to match a desired transmit beampattern while reducing range sidelobes. Since sparse arrays provide larger array apertures and more degrees of optimization freedom than the uniform arrays with the same number of antennas, we consider the sparse array design by selecting a given number of antenna positions from a set of possible grid points with equal spacing. The joint optimization of transmitted waveforms and antenna positions has many advantages, but it also leads to Boolean-nonconvex problems that are difficult to solve. Therefore, we propose a multi-step method based on the nonlinear conjugate gradient (NCG) method and the limited-memory Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno with bound constraints (L-BFGS-B) algorithm to solve the design problems. Simulation results demonstrate the proposed method can obtain the transmit waveforms and array configuration with the desired performance and is superior to the existing methods.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the joint design of a transmit beampattern and angular waveform (AW) for colocated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars. The importance of the AW in the proposed signal processing strategy is first clarified, and then, two optimization models are established, which are aimed at either the power spectral density (PSD) design or the spectral compatibility and similarity design of the AW. There are two main differences between the proposed models and existing models. First, instead of matching a desired template or maximizing the transmit power on specific regions, the transmit beampattern in this paper is optimized to approach several key points, which guarantees the high transmit gain and the flexible adjustment of each beam gain. Second, instead of optimizing the performance of the transmit waveform, only the characteristics of the AW are examined, and they can be constrained quantitatively according to their relationship with the transmit gain. The two models can be unified into the same framework, and an efficient algorithm is proposed to solve the problem under a constant modulus constraint. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated, and some improvements to reduce the computational complexity are proposed. Numerical simulations showed that compared to the existing methods, the proposed approach can be used to obtain a higher transmit gain, flexibly adjust each beam gain, and more accurately control the PSD, spectral compatibility, and similarity of the AW. Moreover, numerical simulations showed that, compared to the use of existing methods, the proposed algorithm has higher computational efficiency.

Abstract:Due to the rapid attenuation of the mil-limeter wave, it is necessary to use very large-scale antenna arrays in millimeter wave communications to get ultra-high directivity which improves the transmis-sion distance and the signal-to-noise ratio. Considering the cost of large-scale RF links, analog beamforming plays an important role in large-scale MIMO commu-nications. This paper discusses the calculation method of the antenna pattern that best matches the instanta-neous MIMO channel in analog beamforming. By giv-ing piecewise modeling on the antenna pattern, singular value decomposition and the water-filling algorithm are used to obtain the antenna pattern and the power distri-bution among antennas. The optimal antenna pattern can provide the target pattern for antenna synthesis to get the maximum capacity. The simulation results show that the method is effective.

Abstract:Digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) has emerged as an advanced technique to achieve a range of jamming signals, due to its capability to intercept waveforms within a short time. multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars can transmit agile orthogonal waveform sets for different pulses to combat DRFM-based jamming, where any two groups of waveform sets are also orthogonal. In this article, a group orthogonal waveform optimal design model is formulated in order to combat DRFM-based jamming by flexibly designing waveforms for MIMO radars. Aiming at balancing the intra- and intergroup orthogonal performances, the objective function is defined as the weighted sum of the intra- and intergroup orthogonal performance metrics. To solve the formulated model, in this article, a group orthogonal waveform design algorithm is proposed. Based on a primal-dual-type method and proper relaxations, the proposed algorithm transforms the original problem into a series of simple subproblems. Numerical results demonstrate that the obtained group orthogonal waveforms have the ability to flexibly suppress DRFM-based deceptive jamming, which is not achievable using p-majorization–minimization (p-MM) and primal-dual, two of the most advanced orthogonal waveform design algorithms.

Optimal Design of Multiple Panel Arrays in LoS MIMO System.

Abstract:This paper investigates the optimal design of multiple panel arrays (MPAs) for line-of-sight (LoS) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. We use the spherical wave channel model and give a geometric model to model the LoS channel, which allows the receive antenna arrays to have azimuth rotation, elevation angle rotation, up-down offset and left-right offset distance. Based on the geometric model, we derive the optimal antenna design conditions for achieving the maximum channel capacity and spatial multiplexing gain according to the effective degrees of freedom. The results show that the proposed antenna design can achieve high channel space freedom when the receive antennas have angle rotation and offset, and is suitable for the case where the receive antennas have a large left-right offset distance.

Abstract:Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) radar can effectively improve radar performance by transmitting specially designed orthogonal signals. A novel algorithm is presented to design binary orthogonal code for MIMO radar system. The proposed algorithm employs the Walsh function to maintain the orthogonal property of signals. The binary orthogonal code set is obtained by executing synchronal random exchange in column and random selection from rows to coding template, with using Genetic Algorithm (GA) for optimization. The simulation results show that the algorithm is feasible.

Abstract:The input base band signals on MIMO antenna elements can be uncorrelated with arbitrary amplitude and phase,so the zero radiation defect of MIMO antenna could be caused by some input code words.This defect can be determined by the radiation patterns of MIMO antenna elements.It also can be determined only by scattering parameters on local ports for lossless antenna.Using robust pattern design method proposed in this paper,the zero radiation defects can be avoided.Using the proposed inhomogeneous determine criterion,the blindness of array antenna on MIMO base station also can be determined.

Abstract:Colocated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar can transmit a group of distinct waveforms via its colocated transmit antennas and the waveform diversity leads to several advantages in contrast to conventional phased-array radar. The performance depends highly on the degrees available, and element spacing can be deemed as another source of degrees of freedom. In this paper, we study the joint waveform and element spacing optimization problem. A joint waveform and array optimization criterion is proposed to match the transmit beampattern, the suppression range, and the angular sidelobes, under the constraints of minimal element spacing and total array aperture. Meanwhile, the effect of receive beamforming on suppressing mutual correlation between returns from different spatial directions is also incorporated into the optimization criterion. The optimization problem is solved by the sequential quadratic programming algorithm. Numerical results indicate that with more degrees of freedom from array spacings, colocated MIMO radar achieves a better transmit beampattern matching performance and a lower sidelobe level, compared with a fixed half-wavelength spaced array, but the benefits from additional degrees of freedom from array spacing optimization have a limit.

Abstract:For multiple-inputmultiple-output radar employing the advantage of virtual array, the general assumption of the perfect orthogonality between multiple waveforms is proved to be unachievable. Therefore, to achieve good orthogonality, transmission schemes employing frequency diversity or chirp modulation diversity have been extensively investigated. Inspired by the idea of "diversity means superiority," approach which integrates multiple diversities in a single waveform might be used to improve the orthogonality. In this paper, a novel waveform named discrete frequency and chirp-rate coding waveform (DFCCW) consisting of both frequency and chirp modulation diversities is proposed. Based on the auto-and cross-ambiguity functions of the DFCCW, we prove that the proposed approach is able to decrease the cross ambiguity peak values. To generate and optimize a set of Pareto-optimal DFCCWs, a many-objective optimization algorithm named nondominated sorting genetic algorithm with differential evolution is presented. Besides, the optimal criteria considering Doppler effects ensure that the DFCCW possess good performance in presence of moving targets. Numerical results show that the DFCCW achieves better orthogonality than the waveforms that utilize only single diversity type.

In this paper, we propose the pattern-division multiplexing to design the patterns for CAPMIMO. Specifically, we first derive the system model of a typical CAP-MIMO system, which allows us to formulate the capacity maximization problem. Then we propose a general pattern-division multiplexing technique to transform the design of continuous pattern functions to the design of their projection lengths on finite orthogonal bases, which is able to overcome the design challenge of continuous functions. Based on this technique, we further propose an alternating optimization based pattern design scheme to solve the formulated capacity maximization problem. Simulation results show that, the capacity achieved by the proposed scheme is about 260% higher than that achieved by the benchmark scheme, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed pattern-division multiplexing for CAP-MIMO.

Abstract:In this paper, the performances of a general MIMO system with arrays at both ends adopting different antenna polarization combinations are studied. Our results show that MIMO systems exploiting the vertically co-polarized antenna arrays at both ends outperform the horizontally co-polarized combination. The adoption of the orthogonal polarization antenna arrays at both ends can achieve parallel transmission and reception pairs at the expense of some subchannel gains, and thus is an efficient way for enhancing channel capacity in a poor-scattering environment. When cross-polarized antenna combination is used at both ends, both isolation and correlation properties are needed to fully describe the system performance whereas a co-polarized antenna combination scheme can be described by correlation property alone.
