Abstract:The mixed equation , defined as a combination of the anti-self-duality equation in gauge theory and Cauchy–Riemann equation in symplectic geometry, is studied. In particular, regularity and Fredholm properties are established for the solutions of this equation, and it is shown that the moduli spaces of solutions to the mixed equation satisfy a compactness property which combines Uhlenbeck and Gormov compactness theorems. The results of this paper are used in a sequel to study the Atiyah–Floer conjecture.

Abstract:Around 1988, Floer introduced two important theories: instanton Floer homology as invariants of 3-manifolds and Lagrangian Floer homology as invariants of pairs of Lagrangians in symplectic manifolds. Soon after that, Atiyah conjectured that the two theories should be related to each other and Lagrangian Floer homology of certain Lagrangians in the moduli space of flat connections on Riemann surfaces should recover instanton Floer homology. However, the space of flat connections on a Riemann surface is singular and the first step to address this conjecture is to make sense of Lagrangian Floer homology on this space. In this note, we formulate a possible approach to resolving this issue. A strategy for constructing the desired isomorphism in the Atiyah-Floer conjecture is also sketched. We also use the language of 2400-categories to state generalizations of the Atiyah-Floer conjecture.

Abstract: In this paper the author discuss the relation between Lagrangian Floer homology and Gauge-theory (Donaldson theory) Floer homology. It can be regarded as a version of Atiyah-Floer type conjecture in the case of $SO(3)$-bundle with non-trivial second Stiefel-Whitney class. This is a first of a series of papers, where we describe the main results and geometric and algebraic parts of the proof. The half of analytic detail was in [Fu5] which was published in 1998. The other half will appear in subsequent papers.

Abstract:We classify -instantons admitting -symmetries, and construct a new family of examples on the spinor bundle of the 3-sphere, equipped with the asymptotically conical, co-homogeneity one -metric of Bryant–Salamon. We also show that outside of the -invariant examples, any other -instanton on this metric with the same asymptotic behaviour must have obstructed deformations.

Abstract:Using instanton Floer theory, extending methods due to Froyshov, we determine the definite lattices that arise from smooth 4-manifolds bounded by certain homology 3-spheres. For example, we show that for +1 surgery on the (2,5) torus knot, the only non-diagonal lattices that can occur are E8 and the indecomposable unimodular definite lattice of rank 12, up to diagonal summands. We require that our 4-manifolds have no 2-torsion in their homology.

Abstract:This article explains how to construct immersed Lagrangian submanifolds in C^2 that are asymptotic at large distance from the origin to a given braid in the 3-sphere. The self-intersections of the Lagrangians are related to the crossings of the braid. These Lagrangians are then used to construct immersed Lagrangians in the vector bundle O(-1) oplus O(-1) over the Riemann sphere which are asymptotic at large distance from the zero section to braids.

Equivariant aspects of singular instanton Floer homology

Abstract:We associate several invariants to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere using $SU(2)$ singular instanton gauge theory. There is a space of framed singular connections for such a knot, equipped with a circle action and an equivariant Chern-Simons functional, and our constructions are morally derived from the associated equivariant Morse chain complexes. In particular, we construct a triad of groups analogous to the knot Floer homology package in Heegaard Floer homology, several Frøyshov-type invariants which are concordance invariants, and more. The behavior of our constructions under connected sums are determined. We recover most of Kronheimer and Mrowka's singular instanton homology constructions from our invariants. Finally, the ADHM description of the moduli space of instantons on the 4-sphere can be used to give a concrete characterization of the moduli spaces involved in the invariants of spherical knots, and we demonstrate this point in several examples.

Abstract:We consider exact Lagrangian submanifolds in cotangent bundles. Under certain additional restrictions (triviality of the fundamental group of the cotangent bundle, and of the Maslov class and second Stiefel–Whitney class of the Lagrangian submanifold) we prove such submanifolds are Floer-cohomologically indistinguishable from the zero-section. This implies strong restrictions on their topology. An essentially equivalent result was recently proved independently by Nadler [16], using a different approach.

Abstract:Abstract A symplectic bundle over an algebraic curve has a natural invariant s Lag determined by the maximal degree of its Lagrangian subbundles. This can be viewed as a generalization of the classical Segre invariants of a vector bundle. We give a sharp upper bound on s Lag which is analogous to the Hirschowitz bound on the classical Segre invariants. Furthermore, we study the stratifications induced by s Lag on moduli spaces of symplectic bundles, and get a full picture for the case of rank four.

Abstract:We construct an invariant for non-spin 4-manifolds by using 2-torsion cohomology classes of moduli spaces of instantons on SO(3)-bundles. The invariant is an SO(3)-version of Fintushel-Stern's 2-torsion instanton invariant. We show that this SO(3)-torsion invariant is non-trivial for $2CP^2 # -CP^2$, while it is known that any known invariant of $2CP^2 # -CP^2$ coming from the Seiberg-Witten theory is trivial since $2CP^2 # -CP^2$ has a positive scalar curvature metric.

't Hooft bundles on the complete flag threefold and moduli spaces of instantons

Abstract:In this work we study the moduli space of instanton bundles on the flag twistor space $F:=F(0,1,2)$. We stratify them in terms of the minimal twist supporting global sections and we introduce the notion of (special) 't Hooft bundle on $F$. In particular we prove that there exist $\mu$-stable 't Hooft bundles for each admissible charge $k$. We completely describe the geometric structure of the moduli space of (special) 't Hooft bundles for arbitrary charge $k$. Along the way to reach these goals, we describe the possible structures of multiple curves supported on some rational curves in $F$ as well as the moduli space of del Pezzo surfaces realized as hyperplane sections of $F$. Finally we investigate the splitting behaviour of 't Hooft bundles when restricted to conics.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Lagrangian Floer theory over $\Z$ or $\Z_2$. Under an appropriate assumption on ambient symplectic manifold, we show that the whole story of Lagrangian Floer theory in \cite{fooo-book} can be developed over $\Z_2$ coefficients, and over $\Z$ coefficients when Lagrangian submanifolds are relatively spin. The main technical tools used for the construction are the notion of the sheaf of groups, and stratification and compatibility of the normal cones applied to the Kuranishi structure of the moduli space of pseudo-holomorphic discs.
On a Conjecture of Lan-Sheng-Zuo on Semistable Higgs Bundles: Rank 3 Case

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve of genus $g$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>2$. We prove that any rank $3$ nilpotent semistable Higgs bundle $(E,\theta)$ on $X$ is a strongly semistable Higgs bundle. This gives a partially affirmative answer to a conjecture of Lan-Sheng-Zuo \cite{LanShengZuo12ii}\footnotemark[1]. In addition, we prove a tensor product theorem for strongly semistable Higgs bundles with $p$ satisfying some bounds (Theorem \ref{TensorTheorem}). From this we reprove a tensor theorem for semistable Higgs bundles on the condition that the Lan-Sheng-Zuo conjecture holds (Corollary \ref{TensorStableBundle}).

Unoriented skein exact triangles in equivariant singular instanton Floer theory

Abstract:Equivariant singular instanton Floer theory is a framework that associates to a knot in an integer homology 3-sphere a suite of homological invariants that are derived from circle-equivariant Morse-Floer theory of a Chern-Simons functional for framed singular $SU(2)$-connections. These invariants generalize the instanton knot homology of Kronheimer and Mrowka. In the present work, these constructions are extended from knots to links with non-zero determinant, and several unoriented skein exact triangles are proved in this setting. As a particular case, a categorification of the behavior of the Murasugi signature for links under unoriented skein relations is established. In addition to the exact triangles, Frøyshov-type invariants for links are defined, and several computations using the exact triangles are carried out. The computations suggest a relationship between Heegaard Floer L-space knots and those knots whose instanton-theoretic categorification of the knot signature is supported in even gradings. A main technical contribution of this work is the construction of maps for certain cobordisms between links on which obstructed reducible singular instantons are present. These constructions are inspired by recent work of the first author and Miller Eismeier in the setting of non-singular instanton theory for rational homology 3-spheres.

An $S^3\times S^3$ bundle over $S^4$ and new supergravity solutions

Abstract:The metric of $S^7$ can be written as an $SU(2)$-instanton bundle over $S^4$. It is also possible to write it differently as an anti-instanton bundle. We use this observation to construct an instanton--anti-instanton, $SU(2)\times SU(2)$, bundle over $S^4$. We show that this 10d manifold admits two Einstein metrics. We then rewrite the metric to isolate two $U(1)$ directions of the fibre and dimensionally reduce along them to get an eight dimensional metric describing an $S^2\times S^2$ bundle over $S^4$. This metric allows a harmonic 4-form which we use to derive new supergravity solutions in eleven and ten dimensions as $AdS_3\times M_8$ and $AdS_2\times M_8$, respectively.

Rank three instantons, representations and sutures

Abstract:We show that the knot group of any knot in any integer homology sphere admits a non-abelian representation into $SU(3)$ such that meridians are mapped to matrices whose eigenvalues are the three distinct third roots of unity. This answers the $N=3$ case of a question posed by Xie and the first author. We also characterize when a $PU(3)$-bundle admits a flat connection. The key ingredient in the proofs is a study of the ring structure of $U(3)$ instanton Floer homology of $S^1\times \Sigma_g$. In an earlier paper, Xie and the first author stated the so-called eigenvalue conjecture about this ring, and in this paper we partially resolve this conjecture. This allows us to establish a surface decomposition theorem for $U(3)$ instanton Floer homology of sutured manifolds, and then obtain the mentioned topological applications. Along the way, we prove a structure theorem for $U(3)$ Donaldson invariants, which is the counterpart of Kronheimer and Mrowka's structure theorem for $U(2)$ Donaldson invariants. We also prove a non-vanishing theorem for the $U(3)$ Donaldson invariants of symplectic manifolds.

Abstract:Given a closed, connected, oriented 3-manifold with positive first Betti number, one can define an instanton Floer group as well as a quilted Lagrangian Floer group. The quilted Atiyah-Floer conjecture states that these cohomology groups are isomorphic. We initiate a program for proving this conjecture.

Abstract:This is a mixture of survey article and research announcement. We discuss instanton Floer homology for 3 manifolds with boundary. We also discuss a categorification of the Lagrangian Floer theory using the unobstructed immersed Lagrangian correspondence as a morphism in the category of symplectic manifolds. During the year 1998–2012, those problems have been studied emphasizing the ideas from analysis such as degeneration and adiabatic limit (instanton Floer homology) and strip shrinking (Lagrangian correspondence). Recently we found that replacing those analytic approach by a combination of cobordism type argument and homological algebra, we can resolve various difficulties in the analytic approach. It thus solves various problems and also simplify many of the proofs.
