Abstract:Vibrational polaritons are formed by strong coupling of molecular vibrations and photon modes in an optical cavity. Experiments have demonstrated that vibrational strong coupling can change molecular properties and even affect chemical reactivity. However, the interactions in a molecular ensemble are complex, and the exact mechanisms that lead to modifications are not fully understood yet. We simulate two-dimensional infrared spectra of molecular vibrational polaritons based on the double quantum coherence technique to gain further insight into the complex many-body structure of these hybrid light-matter states. Double quantum coherence uniquely resolves the excitation of hybrid light-matter polaritons and allows to directly probe the anharmonicities of the resulting states. By combining the cavity Born-Oppenheimer Hartree-Fock ansatz with a full quantum dynamics simulation of the corresponding eigenstates, we go beyond simplified model systems. This allows us to study the influence of self-polarization and the response of the electronic structure to the cavity interaction on the spectral features even beyond the single-molecule case.

Local fluctuations of vibrational polaritons monitored by two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy

Abstract:We study the collective behavior of molecules placed in an infrared (IR) microcavity, incorporating the local fluctuations, i.e., dynamical disorder. The cooperative feature in vibrational polaritons is shown to be dynamically eroded, due to intermolecule coherence. To further resolve such process, we develop a two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy (2D-IR) for molecules interacting with cavity modes. The cooperative feature in correspondence to the spectroscopic signal is specified. The results reveal the dark states by the cross peaks apart from the ones for polaritons, as a result of the breakdown of cooperativity between molecules. We further show that the breakdown of cooperativity profoundly connects to the localization of the vibrational excitations whereas the polariton modes are extended wave over several molecules. Besides, our work offers new physical insight for understanding the recent 2D-IR experiments where the interaction between dark modes and bright polaritons was evident.

Abstract:Strong coupling of cavity photons and molecular vibrations creates vibrational polaritons that have been shown to modify chemical reactivity and alter material properties. While ultrafast spectroscopy of vibrational polaritons has been performed intensively in metal complexes, ultrafast dynamics in vibrationally strongly coupled organic molecules remain unexplored. Here, we report ultrafast pump-probe measurement and two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy in diphenylphosphoryl azide under vibrational strong coupling. Early time oscillatory structures indicate coherent energy exchange between the two polariton modes, which decays in ∼2 ps. We observe a large transient absorptive feature around the lower polariton, which can be explained by the overlapped excited-state absorption and derivative-shaped structures around the lower and upper polaritons. The latter feature is explained by the Rabi splitting contraction, which is ascribed to a reduced population in the ground state. These results reassure the previously reported spectroscopic theory to describe nonlinear spectroscopy of vibrational polaritons. We have also noticed the influence of the complicated layer structure of the cavity mirrors. The penetration of the electric field distribution into the layered structure of the dielectric-mirror cavities can significantly affect the Rabi splitting and the decay time constant of polaritonic systems.

Multiple Rabi Splittings under Ultra-Strong Vibrational Coupling

Abstract:From the high vibrational dipolar strength offered by molecular liquids, we demonstrate that a molecular vibration can be ultra-strongly coupled to multiple IR cavity modes, with Rabi splittings reaching $24\%$ of the vibration frequencies. As a proof of the ultra-strong coupling regime, our experimental data unambiguously reveal the contributions to the polaritonic dynamics coming from the anti-resonant terms in the interaction energy and from the dipolar self-energy of the molecular vibrations themselves. In particular, we measure the opening of a genuine vibrational polaritonic bandgap of ca. $60$ meV. We also demonstrate that the multimode splitting effect defines a whole vibrational ladder of heavy polaritonic states perfectly resolved. These findings reveal the broad possibilities in the vibrational ultra-strong coupling regime which impact both the optical and the molecular properties of such coupled systems, in particular in the context of mode-selective chemistry.

Abstract:The optical hybridization of the electronic states in strongly coupled molecule-cavity systems have revealed unique properties such as lasing, room temperature polariton condensation, and the modification of excited electronic landscapes involved in molecular isomerization. Here we show that molecular vibrational modes of the electronic ground state can also be coherently coupled with a micro-cavity mode at room temperature, given the low vibrational thermal occupation factors associated with molecular vibrations, and the collective coupling of a large ensemble of molecules immersed within the cavity mode volume. This enables the enhancement of the collective Rabi-exchange rate with respect to the single oscillator coupling strength. The possibility of inducing large shifts in the vibrational frequency of selected molecular bonds should have immediate consequences for chemistry.

Abstract:We report the first experimental two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectra of novel molecular photonic excitations - vibrational-polaritons. The application of advanced 2D IR spectroscopy onto novel vibrational-polariton challenges and advances our understanding in both fields. From spectroscopy aspect, 2D IR spectra of polaritons differ drastically from free uncoupled molecules; from vibrational-polariton aspects, 2D IR uniquely resolves hybrid light-matter polariton excitations and unexpected dark states in a state-selective manner and revealed hidden interactions between them. Moreover, 2D IR signals highlight the role of vibrational anharmonicities in generating non-linear signals. To further advance our knowledge on 2D IR of vibrational polaritons, we develop a new quantum-mechanical model incorporating the effects of both nuclear and electrical anharmonicities on vibrational-polaritons and their 2D IR signals. This work reveals polariton physics that is difficult or impossible to probe with traditional linear spectroscopy and lays the foundation for investigating new non-linear optics and chemistry of molecular vibrational-polaritons.

Abstract:Strong coupling between the molecular vibrations and electromagnetic fields of light confined to an infrared cavity leads to the formation of vibro-polaritons – quasi-particles thought to provide the means to control the rates of chemical reactions inside a dark cavity. Despite the mechanisms indicating how vibrational coupling to the vacuum fields can affect the reaction rates are still not well understood, it has been recently demonstrated that the formation of the polariton states alters the ultrafast relaxation dynamics of the strongly coupled system. The relaxation dynamics in molecules, which is known to be important for the chemical reactivity, is directed by anharmonic couplings involving multiple intra- and inter-molecular vibrational degrees of freedom. However, the impact of the molecular anharmonicity on the polariton states remains elusive. Some theoretical models, employed to interpret the experimental observations, assume that vibrational polaritons are harmonic. Others assume a certain anharmonicity of vibro-polaritons; however, to date, it has not been experimentally determined. Herein, we performed double-quantum two-dimensional third-order nonlinear infrared spectroscopy of the carbonyl stretching (C=O) vibrational modes in a thin film of polymethyl methacrylate polymer (PMMA) strongly coupled to the surface lattice resonances of the periodic arrays of half-wavelength infrared disk antennas. We found that, indeed, the mechanical anharmonicity of polaritons is very small. Quantitatively, our results place an upper bound on a polariton mechanical anharmonicity of 2 cm −1 , compared with that of the C=O mode in a PMMA film of 15 cm −1 . Thus, our results support previous assumptions regarding the harmonic character of vibro-polaritons.

Isolating Polaritonic 2D-IR Transmission Spectra

Abstract:Strong coupling between vibrational transitions in molecules within a resonant optical microcavity leads to the formation of collective, delocalized vibrational polaritons. There are many potential applications of "polaritonic chemistry," ranging from modified chemical reactivity to quantum in-formation processing. One challenge in obtaining the polaritonic response is to remove a background contribution due to the uncoupled molecules that generate an ordinary 2D-IR spectrum whose amplitude is filtered by the polariton transmission spectrum. We show that most features in 2D-IR spectra of vibrational polaritons can be explained by a linear superposition of this background signal and the true polariton response. Through a straightforward correction procedure, where the filtered bare molecule 2D-IR spectrum is subtracted from the measured cavity response, we recover the polaritonic spectrum.

Abstract:Recent experiments and theory demonstrate that the the ground state properties and chemical reactivity of molecules can be modified inside an optical cavity. The vibrational strong or ultrastrong coupling results in the formation of vibrational polaritons which are usually observed through infrared spectra (IR). Here, we provide a theoretical framework to conduct multidimensional quantum simulations of the infrared spectra when the molecule is interacting with cavity modes. Taking single water molecule as an example, combing with accurate potential energy and dipole moment surfaces, our implemented cavity vibrational self-consistent field/virtual state configuration interaction (cVSCF/VCI) is shown to be able to provide quantitative predictions of the IR spectra when the molecule is inside or outside the cavity. The spectral signatures of resonance splittings and blue/red shift of certain bands are found to be highly related with the frequency and polarization direction of the cavity modes. Further analyses of the simulated spectra shows that polaritonic strong vibrational coupling greatly induce the coupling between molecule's vibrational modes, indicating the intramolecular vibrational energy transfer may be significantly accelerated by the cavity.
Multiple Interacting Photonic Modes in Strongly Coupled Organic Microcavities

Abstract:Room temperature cavity quantum electrodynamics with molecular materials in optical cavities offers exciting prospects for controlling electronic, nuclear and photonic degrees of freedom for applications in physics, chemistry and materials science. However, achieving strong coupling with molecular ensembles typically requires high molecular densities and substantial electromagnetic field confinement. These conditions usually involve a significant degree of molecular disorder and a highly structured photonic density of states. It remains unclear to what extent these additional complexities modify the usual physical picture of strong coupling developed for atoms and inorganic semiconductors. Using a microscopic quantum description of molecular ensembles in realistic multimode optical resonators, we show that the emergence of a vacuum Rabi splitting in linear spectroscopy is a necessary but not sufficient metric of coherent admixing between light and matter. In low finesse multi-mode situations we find that molecular dipoles can be partially hybridised with photonic dissipation channels associated with off-resonant cavity modes. These vacuum-induced dissipative processes ultimately limit the extent of light-matter coherence that the system can sustain.

Abstract:Optical resonators have shown outstanding abilities to tailor chemical landscapes through enhanced light-matter interaction between confined optical modes and molecule vibrations. We propose a theoretical model to study cooperative vibrational strong coupling in an open quantum system. The non-equilibrium stochastic molecular dynamics in an optical cavity with an auxiliary ensemble is investigated. It shows that coupling with a cavity mode introduces an additional colored noise and a negative feedback, both of which enable control over thermalization rates (i.e. the lifetime of excitation) of reactive molecules. Our work offers a pathway to steer stability of chemical bonds for chemical reactivity under cooperative vibrational strong coupling.

Collective vibrational strong coupling effects on molecular vibrational relaxation and energy transfer: Numerical insights via cavity molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:For a small fraction of hot CO2 molecules immersed in a liquid-phase CO2 thermal bath, classical cavity molecular dynamics simulations show that forming collective vibrational strong coupling (VSC) between the C=O asymmetric stretch of CO2 molecules and a cavity mode accelerates hot-molecule relaxation. The physical mechanism underlying this acceleration is the fact that polaritons, especially the lower polariton, can be transiently excited during the nonequilibrium process, which facilitates intermolecular vibrational energy transfer. The VSC effects on these rates (i) resonantly depend on the cavity mode detuning, (ii) cooperatively depend on molecular concentration or Rabi splitting, and (iii) collectively scale with the number of hot molecules, which is similar to Dicke's superradiance. For larger cavity volumes, due to a balance between this superradiant-like behavior and a smaller light-matter coupling, the total VSC effect on relaxation rates can scale slower than $1/N$, and the average VSC effect per molecule can remain meaningful for up to $N \sim10^4$ molecules forming VSC. Moreover, we find that the transiently excited lower polariton prefers to relax by transferring its energy to the tail of the molecular energy distribution rather than equally distributing it to all thermal molecules. Finally, we highlight the similarities of parameter dependence between the current finding with VSC catalysis observed in Fabry-Perot microcavities.

Abstract:We present a microscopic theory for nonlinear optical spectroscopy of N molecules in an optical cavity. Using the Heisenberg-Langevin equation, an analytical expression is derived for the time- and frequency-resolved signals accounting for arbitrary numbers of vibrational excitations. We identify clear signatures of the polariton-polaron interaction from multidimensional projections of the signal, e.g., pathways and timescales. Cooperative dynamics of cavity polaritons against intramolecular vibrations is revealed, along with a crosstalk between long-range coherence and vibronic coupling that may lead to localization effects. To illustrate key aspects of our formalism, we explore a model SN2 reaction within a single-mode infrared resonator. Our findings reveal that chemical equilibria can be shifted in either direction of a chemical reaction, depending on the oscillator strength and frequencies of reactant and product normal-modes. Polariton-induced zero-point energy changes provide the dominant contributions, though the effects in single-mode cavities tend to diminish quickly as the temperature and number of molecules increase. Our approach is valid in generic electromagnetic environments and paves the way for understanding and controlling chemical equilibria with microcavities.

Abstract:Recent experiments of chemical reactions in optical cavities have shown great promise to alter and steer chemical reactions but still remain poorly understood theoretically. In particular the origin of resonant effects between the cavity and certain vibrational modes in the collective limit is still subject to active research. In this paper, we study unimolecular dissociation reactions of many molecules collectively interacting with an infrared cavity mode through their vibrational dipole moment. We find that the reaction rate can slow down by increasing the number of aligned molecules if the cavity mode is resonant with a vibrational frequency of the molecules. We also discover a simple scaling relation that scales with the collective Rabi splitting to estimate the onset of reaction rate modification by collective vibrational strong coupling and numerically demonstrate these effects for up to 10,000 molecules.

Collective rovibronic dynamics of a diatomic gas coupled by cavity

Abstract:We consider an ensemble of homonuclear diatomic molecules coupled to the two polarization directions of a Fabry-Pérot cavity via fully quantum simulations. Accompanied by analytical results, we identify a coupling mechanism mediated simultaneously by the two perpendicular polarizations, and inducing polaritonic relaxation towards molecular rotations. This mechanism is related to the concept of light-induced conical intersections (LICI). However, unlike LICIs, these non-adiabatic pathways are of collective nature, since they depend on the \emph{relative} intermolecular orientation of all electronic transition dipoles in the polarization plane. Notably, this rotational mechanism directly couples the bright upper and lower polaritonic states, and it stays in direct competition with the collective relaxation towards dark-states. Our simulations indicate that the molecular rotational dynamics in gas-phase cavity-coupled systems can serve as a novel probe for non-radiative polaritonic decay towards the dark-states manifold.

Abstract:We present a comparative study on the C-H stretching vibrations at air/DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) interface with both the free-induction decay (FID) coherent vibrational dynamics and the sub-wavenumber high resolution sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy measurements. In principle the frequency-domain and time-domain spectroscopic measurements should generate identical information for a given molecular system. However, when the molecular systems are with several coupled or overlapping vibrational modes, obtaining detailed spectroscopic and coherent dynamics information is not as straightforward and rather difficult from either the time-domain or the frequency domain measurements. For the case of air/DMSO interface that is with moderately complex vibrational spectra, we show that the frequency-domain measurement with sub-wavenumber high-resolution sum-frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy is probably more advantageous than the time-domain measurement in obtaining quantitative understanding of the structure and coherent dynamics of the molecular interface.
Coherent Vibrational Dynamics in an Isolated Peptide Captured with 2D IR Spectroscopy

Abstract:Quantum mechanical vibrational coherence transfer processes play important roles in energy relaxation, charge transfer, and reaction dynamics in chemical and biological systems, but are difficult to directly measure using traditional condensed-phase nonlinear spectroscopies. Recently, we developed a new experimental capability to obtain two-dimensional infrared (2D IR) spectra of molecular systems in the gas phase that enables the direct measurement of coherence pathways. Herein, we report ultrafast 2D IR spectroscopy of the peptide glutathione (GSH) isolated and cryogenically cooled in the gas phase. Six vibrational modes were simultaneously excited within the amide I and II region. The spectral dynamics of both diagonal and off-diagonal cross peak features exhibit long-lived oscillatory behavior consistent with the presence of coherent vibrational dynamics. The oscillatory signatures deviate significantly from the expected quantum beating pathways predicted from standard nonlinear response theories. These deviations indicate the presence of additional nonlinear pathways, including coherence transfer processes. Quantum chemistry calculations indicate large anharmonic couplings between the excited vibrational modes in GSH and, critically, strong coupling between the excited modes and numerous low-frequency modes that act as a bath to mediate coherence transfer. The data provide important new benchmarks for modeling coherence transfer dynamics and system bath interactions in open quantum systems free from solvent effects.
