Abstract: We prove the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture for projective varieties which have finite morphisms to abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic 0. Our proof is complex analytic, which applies the classical Brody lemma to construct entire curves on complex varieties. Our key ingredients includes a new notion of partial height and its non-degeneracy in a suitable sense. The non-degeneracy is required in the application of the Brody lemma.

Abstract:We introduce a new approach to the geometric Bombieri--Lang conjecture for hyperbolic varieties in characteristic 0. The main idea is to construct an entire curve on a special fiber of a variety over a complex function field from an infinite sequence of rational points of the variety. The construction relies on the classical Brody lemma in complex geometry and is conditional on a non-degeneracy conjecture of partial heights. In particular, we prove the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture for hyperbolic projective varieties which have finite morphisms to abelian varieties over function fields of characteristic 0.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture for projective varieties which have finite morphisms to abelian varieties of trivial traces over function fields of characteristic 0. The proof is based on the idea of constructing entire curves in the pre-sequel "Partial heights, entire curves, and the geometric Bombieri-Lang conjecture." A new ingredient is an explicit description of the entire curves in terms of Lie algebras of abelian varieties.

Arithmetic bigness and a uniform Bogomolov-type result

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the admissible canonical bundle of the universal family of curves is a big adelic line bundle, and apply it to prove a uniform Bogomolov-type theorem for curves over global fields of all characteristics. This gives a different approach to the uniform Mordell-Lang type of result of Dimitrov-Gao-Habegger and Kuhne. The treatment is based on the recent theory of adelic line bundles of Yuan-Zhang.

Abstract:We disprove the original version of the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture in positive characteristic and propose a improved version of this pDML conjecture. We prove that this new version holds for bounded-degree self-maps of projective varieties. Moreover, we propose a geometric version of this pDML conjecture.

On the dynamical Bogomolov conjecture for families of split rational maps

Abstract:We prove that Zhang's dynamical Bogomolov conjecture holds uniformly along $1$-parameter families of rational split maps and curves. This provides dynamical analogues of recent results of Dimitrov-Gao-Habegger and Kühne. In fact, we prove a stronger Bogomolov-type result valid for families of split maps in the spirit of the relative Bogomolov conjecture. We thus provide first instances of a generalization of a conjecture by Baker and DeMarco to higher dimensions. Our proof contains both arithmetic and analytic ingredients. We establish a characterization of curves that are preperiodic under the action of a non-exceptional split rational endomorphism $(f,g)$ of $(\mathbb{P}^1_{\mathbb{C}})^2$ with respect to the measures of maximal entropy of $f$ and $g$, extending a previous result of Levin-Przytycki. We further establish a height inequality for families of split maps and varieties comparing the values of a fiber-wise Call-Silverman canonical height with a height on the base and valid for most points of a non-preperiodic variety. This provides a dynamical generalization of a result by Habegger and generalizes results of Call-Silverman and Baker to higher dimensions. In particular, we establish a geometric Bogomolov theorem for split rational maps and varieties of arbitrary dimension.

On hypergeometric duality conjecture

Abstract:We give an explicit formula for the duality, previously conjectured by Horja and Borisov, of two systems of GKZ hypergeometric PDEs. We prove that in the appropriate limit this duality can be identified with the inverse of the Euler characteristics pairing on cohomology of certain toric Deligne-Mumford stacks, by way of Γ-series cohomology valued solutions to the equations.

Abstract:Abstract We prove a version of the tamely ramified geometric Langlands correspondence in positive characteristic for $GL_{n}(k)$, where $k$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p> n$. Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve over $k$ with marked points, and fix a parabolic subgroup of $GL_{n}(k)$ at each marked point. We denote by $\operatorname{Bun}_{n,P}$ the moduli stack of (quasi-)parabolic vector bundles on $X$, and by $\mathcal{L}oc_{n,P}$ the moduli stack of parabolic flat connections such that the residue is nilpotent with respect to the parabolic reduction at each marked point. We construct an equivalence between the bounded derived category $D^{b}(\operatorname{QCoh}({\mathcal{L}oc_{n,P}^{0}}))$ of quasi-coherent sheaves on an open substack $\mathcal{L}oc_{n,P}^{0}\subset \mathcal{L}oc_{n,P}$, and the bounded derived category $D^{b}(\mathcal{D}^{0}_{{\operatorname{Bun}}_{n,P}}\operatorname{-mod})$ of $\mathcal{D}^{0}_{{\operatorname{Bun}}_{n,P}}$-modules, where $\mathcal{D}^{0}_{\operatorname{Bun}_{n,P}}$ is a localization of $\mathcal{D}_{\operatorname{Bun}_{n,P}}$ the sheaf of crystalline differential operators on $\operatorname{Bun}_{n,P}$. Thus, we extend the work of Bezrukavnikov–Braverman [ 8] to the tamely ramified case. We also prove a correspondence between flat connections on $X$ with regular singularities and meromorphic Higgs bundles on the Frobenius twist $X^{(1)}$ of $X$ with first-order poles.

The geometry of polynomial representations in positive characteristic

Abstract:A $\mathbf{GL}$-variety is a (typically infinite dimensional) variety modeled on the polynomial representation theory of the general linear group. In previous work, we studied these varieties in characteristic 0. In this paper, we obtain results in positive characteristic: for example, we prove a version of Chevalley's theorem on constructible sets. We give an application of our theory to strength of polynomials.

Abstract:We establish the dynamical Northcott property for polarized endomorphisms of a projective variety over a function field $\mathbf{K}$ of characteristic zero, and we relate this property to the notion of stability in complex dynamics. This extends previous results of Benedetto, Baker and DeMarco in dimension $1$, and of Chatzidakis-Hrushovski in higher dimension. Our proof uses complex dynamics arguments and does not rely on the previous ones. We first show that, when $\mathbf{K}$ is the field of rational functions of a normal complex projective variety, the canonical height of a subvariety is the mass of an appropriate bifurcation current and that a marked point is stable if and only if its canonical height is zero. We then establish the geometric dynamical Northcott property characterizing points of height zero in this setting, using a similarity argument. Moving from points to subvarieties, we propose, for polarized endomorphisms, a dynamical version of the geometric Bogomolov conjecture, recently proved by Cantat, Gao, Habegger, and Xie in the original setting of abelian varieties.

Abstract:We generalize the Bogomolov–Gieseker inequality for semistable coherent sheaves on smooth projective surfaces to smooth Deligne–Mumford surfaces. We work over positive characteristic and generalize Langer's method to smooth Deligne–Mumford stacks. As applications we obtain the Bogomolov inequality for semistable coherent sheaves on a Deligne–Mumford surface in characteristic zero, and the Bogomolov inequality for semistable sheaves on a root stack over a smooth surface which is equivalent to the Bogomolov inequality for the rational parabolic sheaves on a smooth surface S . In a joint appendix with Hao Sun, we generalize the Bogomolov inequality formula to Simpson Higgs sheaves on tame Deligne–Mumford stacks.

Abstract: Let $X$ be a projective and smooth variety over a field $k$. The goal of this paper is to prove that the cokernel of the canonical map $Br(X)\to Br(X_{k^s})^{G_k}$ has a finite exponent. Both groups are natural invariants arising from consideration of the Tate conjecture of divisors over $X$.

Abstract:We prove a variant of the Beauville--Bogomolov decomposition for weakly ordinary, or generally globally $F$-split, varieties $X$ with $K_X \sim 0$, in characteristic $p>0$. We also show that the weakly ordinary assumption in our statement cannot be dropped. Additionally, if the assumption $K_X \sim 0$ is replaced by $-K_X$ being semi-ample, we show the weaker statement that all closed fibers of the Albanese morphism are isomorphic. In the appendix written jointly with Giulio Codogni, we also deduce the singular version of the latter statement, in characteristic zero. Finally, we apply our main theorem to draw consequences to the behavior of rational points and fundamental groups of weakly ordinary $K$-trivial varieties in positive characteristic.

The Total Rank Conjecture in Characteristic Two

Abstract:The Total Rank Conjecture is a coarser version of the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud-Horrocks conjecture which, loosely stated, predicts that modules with large annihilators must also have ``large'' syzygies. This conjecture was proved by the second author for rings of odd characteristic by taking advantage of the Adams operations on the category of perfect complexes with finite length homology. In this paper, we prove a stronger form of the Total Rank Conjecture for rings of characteristic two. This result may be seen as evidence that the Generalized Total Rank Conjecture (which is known to be false in odd characteristic) actually holds in characteristic two. We also formulate a meaningful extension of the Total Rank Conjecture over non Cohen-Macaulay rings and prove that this conjecture holds for any ring containing a field (independent of characteristic).

Abstract:We propose a generalization of the Bonahon-Wong-Yang volume conjecture of quantum invariants of surface diffeomorphisms, by relating the asymptotics of the invariants with certain hyperbolic cone structure on the mapping torus determined by the choice of the invariant puncture weights. We prove the conjecture for the once-punctured torus bundle with the diffeomorphism given by the word $LR$.

Abstract:We study character varieties arising as moduli of representations of an orientable surface group into a reductive group $G$. We first show that if $G/Z$ acts freely on the representation variety, then both the representation variety and the character variety are smooth and equidimensional. Next, we count points on a family of smooth character varieties; namely, those involving both regular semisimple and regular unipotent monodromy. In particular, we show that these varieties are polynomial count and obtain an explicit expression for their $E$-polynomials. Finally, by analysing the $E$-polynomial, we determine certain topological invariants of these varieties such as the Euler characteristic and the number of connected components. As an application, we give an example of a cohomologically rigid representation which is not physically rigid.

Abstract:The Durfee conjecture, proposed in 1978, relates two important invariants of isolated hypersurface singularities by a famous inequality; however, the inequality in this conjecture is not sharp. In 1995, Yau announced his conjecture which proposed a sharp inequality. The Yau conjecture characterizes the conditions under which an affine hypersurface with an isolated singularity at the origin is a cone over a nonsingular projective hypersurface; in other words, the conjecture gives a coordinate-free characterization of when a convergent power series is a homogeneous polynomial after a biholomorphic change of variables. In this paper, we have proved that if pg > 0, then 5!pg ≤ μ− p(v), p(v) = (v − 1) − v(v − 1) . . . (v − 4) and pg, μ and v are, respectively, the geometric genus, the Milnor number, and the multiplicity of the isolated singularity at the origin of a weighted homogeneous polynomial. As a consequence, we prove that the Yau conjecture holds for n = 5 if pg > 0. In the process, we have also defined yet another sharp upper bound for the number of positive integral points within a five-dimensional simplex.
On a new proof of the Okuyama--Sakai conjecture

Abstract:In [41] Okuyama and Sakai gave a conjectural equality for the higher genus generalized Brézin--Gross--Witten (BGW) free energies. In a recent work [46] we established the Hodge-BGW correspondence on the relationship between certain special cubic Hodge integrals and the generalized BGW correlators, and a proof of the Okuyama--Sakai conjecture was also given ${\it ibid}$. In this paper, we give a new proof of the Okuyama--Sakai conjecture by a further application of the Dubrovin--Zhang theory for the KdV hierarchy.
