Abstract:Deep learning and symbolic AI (artificial intelligence) are at the stage of reconciliation to promote development of AI’s complex reasoning ability. As the widely used human IQ (intelligence quotient) test problems, Raven’s Progressive Matrices (RPM), formed with symbols of compositional representations, are also suited for measuring AI’s abstract reasoning performance. Recent attempts of using deep residual network, or ResNet, on the RPM problems have proven effective, yet deeper insights into it are still remained unexplored. This work is based on the RAVEN dataset. We first investigate the data efficiency of the network by testing the performance of various dataset sizes. Then, the work probes on how the ResNet cracks the problems, and we find the original dataset answer generation could lead to context blind reasoning. So, we propose a new way to regenerate the answers for future studies and fix the loophole. This method also leads to a neural network’s true abstract reasoning ability evaluation based on the context. Last, we interpret the deep residual networks’ reasoning performance on each rules and ablated attributes for deeper understanding and future improvement.
