Abstract:Hydrogel electrolytes have been attracted intense research interest due to their widespread applications in advanced electronic devices. In this work, we developed a new hydrogel electrolyte to overcome two critical issues in electrochromic devices, involving long-term cycling stability and flexible compatibility. Briefly, gelatin was introduced into a hydrogel polymer matrix based on polyacrylic acid/polyacrylamide, resulting in high transparency, high electronic conductivity, durable electrochemical stability, inherent adhesiveness. Complementary electrochromic devices employing the present hydrogel electrolyte exhibited efficient performance with high optical contrast over 85 %, short response time, high coloration efficiency of 205.7 cm2/C. Remarkably, an excellent operation stability was achieved with less than 3 % loss of the initial optical contrast after 15,000 cycles switching, which was the best case among those based on the same electrochromic materials reported so far. Moreover, the efficient adhesiveness of the present hydrogel electrolyte enabled the compatibility with flexible device and improved the device bending stability. These findings might shed light on the development of durable and flexible electrochromic devices toward practical application.

Abstract:Easy regenerability of core components such as electrode and electrolyte is highly required in advanced electrochemical devices. This work reports a reliable, regenerable, and stretchable hydrogel electrolyte based on ionic bonds between polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyallylamine (PAH). PAA-PAH electrolyte (1M LiCl addition) exhibits high ionic conductivity (0.050 S·cm-1) and excellent mechanical property (fracture strain of 1,688%). Notably, the electrolyte can be regenerated to any desired shape under mild conditions and remains 96% and 90% of the initial ionic conductivity after the first and second regeneration, respectively. PAA-PAH/LiCl-based supercapacitor exhibits nearly 100% capacitance retention upon rolling, stretching, and 5,000 charge-discharge cycles, whereas the regenerated device holds 97.6% capacitance of the initial device and 90.9% after 5,000 cycles. This low-cost, high-efficiency, and regenerable hydrogel electrolyte reveals very promising use in solid-state/flexible supercapacitors and possibly becomes a standard commercial hydrogel electrolyte for sustainable electrochemical energy devices.

Abstract:Ionic gels are emerging as a promising solution for improving the functionality of electrochromic devices. They are increasingly drawing attention in the fields of electrochemistry and functional materials due to their potential to address issues associated with traditional liquid electrolytes, such as volatility, toxicity, and leakage. In extreme scenarios and/or the design of flexible devices, ionic gel electrolytes offer unique and invaluable advantages. This perspective delves into the application of ionic gels in electrochromic devices, exploring various methods to enhance their performance. After briefly introducing developments in ionic gels for electrochromic devices, the trends and key points of future development are discussed in detail.
Transparent Succinonitrile-Modified Polyacrylate Gel Polymer Electrolyte for Solid Electrochromic Devices

Abstract:Transparent gel electrolytes have the advantage of optical transparency, higher ionic conductivity, and better electrode adhesion compared with solid inorganic electrolytes, which is of great significance in solid-state electrochromic glass and other electrochemical applications. Here, succinonitrile-modified polyacrylate gel polymer electrolyte (SN-GPE) has been successfully synthesized via an in -situ thermal polymerization under mild conditions. Adopted succinonitrile significantly improves ionic conductivity from 0.02 mS & sdot;cm � 1 to 4.02 mS & sdot;cm � 1, maintaining advantageous features such as high transparency and excellent electrochemical performance. The optimized SN-GPEs with good adhesion to both counter and working electrodes were assembled in semi -devices with a configuration of glass/FTO/WO3/SN-GPE/FTO/glass, which showed an excellent optical modulation (Delta T) of 34.5 % at lambda = 633 nm and fast response time 4 s/20 s for bleaching/coloration by applying a bias voltage +/- 2.8 V, and promising cycling stability with Delta T maintaining 90 % of the original after 2840 cycles, indicative of an extensive potential in the applications of the solid or flexible electrochromic devices. This work significantly broadens the transparent electrolyte family for advanced large-scale electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Hydrogel materials are receiving increasing research interest due to their intriguing structures that consist of a crosslinked network of polymer chains with interstitial spaces filled with solvent water. This feature endows the materials with the characteristics of being both wet and soft, making them ideal candidates for electrolyte materials for flexible energy storage devices, such as supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries that are under intensive studies nowadays. More importantly, the highly abundant and tunable chemistries of these hydrogels allow the introduction of novel functionalities into the existing hydrogels so that it is possible to fabricate unprecedented energy storage devices with additional functions. Here, the state‐of‐the‐art advances of the hydrogel materials for flexible energy storage devices including supercapacitors and rechargeable batteries are reviewed. In addition, devices with various kinds of functions, such as self‐healing, shape memory, and stretchability, are also included to stress the critical role of hydrogel materials. Furthermore, the challenges embedded in the current technologies are also highlighted and discussed with the hope to continually boost future research for the fast‐developing field. Hydrogel‐based electrolytes, as one of the core components in energy storage devices, introduce flexibility and additional functions, such as stretchability and self‐healing, to the devices. Consequently, improved adaptability to sophisticated and dynamic working environments could be endowed with the devices. The recent advancement of hydrogel‐based electrolytes for flexible and functional energy storage devices is reviewed and discussed.

Abstract:Hydrogels have emerged as promising materials for flexible electronics due to their unique properties, such as high water content, softness, and biocompatibility. In this perspective, we provide an overview of the development of hydrogels for flexible electronics, with a focus on three key aspects: mechanical properties, interfacial adhesion, and conductivity. We discuss the principles of designing high-performance hydrogels and present representative examples of their potential applications in the field of flexible electronics for healthcare. Despite significant progress, several challenges remain, including improving the antifatigue capability, enhancing interfacial adhesion, and balancing water content in wet environments. Additionally, we highlight the importance of considering the hydrogel-cell interactions and the dynamic properties of hydrogels in future research. Looking ahead, the future of hydrogels in flexible electronics is promising, with exciting opportunities on the horizon, but continued investment in research and development is necessary to overcome the remaining challenges.

Abstract:Flexible electronics is an emerging field of research involving multiple disciplines, which include but not limited to physics, chemistry, materials science, electronic engineering, and biology. However, the broad applications of flexible electronics are still restricted due to several limitations, including high Young's modulus, poor biocompatibility, and poor responsiveness. Innovative materials aiming for overcoming these drawbacks and boost its practical application is highly desirable. Hydrogel is a class of 3D crosslinked hydrated polymer networks, and its exceptional material properties render it a promising candidate for the next generation of flexible electronics. Here, we review the latest methods of synthesizing advanced functional hydrogels and the state‐of‐art applications of hydrogel‐based flexible electronics in various fields. More importantly, we discuss on the correlation between properties of the hydrogel and device performance, to have better understanding of the development of flexible electronics by using environmentally responsive hydrogels. Lastly, we provide perspectives on the current challenges and future directions in the development of hydrogel‐based multifunctional flexible electronics. This article is protected by copyright. Rechargeable Zn2+/Al3+ dual-ion electrochromic device with long life time utilizing dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-nanocluster modified hydrogel electrolytes

Abstract:Despite recent advances in hydrogel electrolytes for flexible electrochemical energy storage, ion conductors still exhibit some major shortcomings including low ionic conductivity and short lifetimes. As such, for applications in electrochromic batteries, a transparent, highly conductive electrolyte based on a dimethyl-sulfoxide (DMSO) modified polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel is being developed and implemented in a dual-ion Zn2+/Al3+ electrochromic device consisting of a Zn anode and WO3 cathode. Gelation in a DMSO : H2O mixed solvent leads to highly increased electrolyte retention in the hydrogel and prolonged life time for ionic conduction. The hydrogel-based electrochromic device offers a specific charge capacity of 16.9 μAh cm-2 at a high current density of 200 μA cm-2 while retaining 100% coulombic efficiency over 200 charge-discharge cycles. While the DMSO-modified electrolyte shows ionic conductivities up to 27 mS cm-1 at room temperature, the formation of DMSO : H2O nanoclusters enables ionic conduction even at temperatures as low as -15 °C and retention of ionic conduction over more than 4 weeks. Furthermore, the electrochromic WO3 cathode gives the device a controllable absorption with up to 80% change in transparency. Based on low-cost, earth abundant materials like W (tungsten), Zn (zinc) and Al (aluminum) and a scalable fabrication process, the introduced hydrogel-based electrochromic device shows great potential for next-generation flexible and wearable energy storage systems.

Abstract:Hydrogel electrolytes are attracting growing interest in the various fields, and tremendous efforts have been widely made for enhancing the hydrogel electrolyte of flexible devices. However, conventional hydrogel electrolytes generally contain non-degradable and non-renewable polymer matrix materials, inevitably causing waste of resources and environmental pollution, which fundamentally restricts the utilization of hydrogel electrolyte in the aspect of energy storage device during daily use. In this work, a novel flexible hydrogel electrolyte, that can be reducible, recyclable, and reusable (3R), is fabricated through physical and chemistry double crosslinking among carboxylated chitosan, N-methylol acrylamide, N, N′-methylene bisacrylamide, and potassium persulfate, followed by intense uptake of Li2SO4 electrolyte. The hydrogel electrolyte membrane displays high ionic conductivity of 3.52 × 10−2 S cm−1, and exhibits 348.92% electrolyte uptake., The flexible quasi-solid supercapacitor assembled with the hydrogel electrolyte shows remarkable electrochemical performance like high capacitance retention of 83% and outstanding energy density of 8.74 Wh kg−1. Interestingly, the renewable performance of hydrogel electrolyte membrane is observed when the hydrogel electrolyte membrane suffered from heating to cooling cycle, which allows to easily realize multiple regeneration of electrolyte membrane based on the reversible sol-gel transition. This work provides a promising route to design a hydrogel electrolyte membrane with infinite regeneration times for flexible energy storage devices in the future.

Flexible high electrochemical active hydrogel for wearable sensors and supercapacitor electrolytes

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of flexible, portable devices, hydrogel electrolytes have gained considerable attention as potential replacements for conventional liquid electrolytes. A hydrogel electrolyte was synthesised by cross-linking acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and zinc sulphate (ZnSO4). The formation of hydrogen bonds and chelate interactions between the P(AA-co-AM) polymer, CMC, and ZnSO4 created a robust network, enhancing the mechanical properties of the hydrogel electrolytes. Notably, the hydrogel electrolyte containing 0.6 % CMC demonstrated superior mechanical strength (compression strength of 1.22 MPa, tensile stress of 230 kPa, tensile strain of 424 %, adhesion strength of 1.98 MPa on wood). Additionally, the CMC/P(AA-co-AM) hydrogels exhibited commendable electrical performance (38 mS/cm) and a high gauge factor (2.9), enabling the precise detection of physiological activity signals through resistance measurements. The unique network structure of the hydrogel electrolyte also ensured a stable bonding interface between the electrode and the electrolyte. After 2000 charge-discharge cycles, the supercapacitor maintained good capacitance characteristics, with a capacitance retention rate of 71.21 % and a stable Coulombic efficiency of 98.85 %, demonstrating excellent cyclic stability. This study introduces a novel methodology for fabricating multifunctional all-solid-state supercapacitors and suggests that the hydrogel can significantly advance the development of wearable energy storage devices.
A Strong and Highly Transparent Ionogel Electrolyte Enabled by In Situ Polymerization-Induced Microphase Separation for High-Performance Electrochromic Devices

Abstract:Electrochromic devices built with ionogel electrolytes are seen as a pivotal step toward the future of quasi-solid electrochromic devices, due to their striking properties like exceptional safety and high ionic conductivity. Yet, the poor mechanical strength of electrolyte of these devices remains a constraint that hampers their advancement. As a resolution, this research explores the use of a robust, transparent ionogel electrolyte, which is designed using an in situ microphase separation strategy. The ionogels are highly transparent and robust and exhibit excellent physicochemical stability, including a wide electrochemical window and high temperature tolerance. Benefitting from these properties, a high-performance electrochromic device is fabricated through in situ polymerization with the ionogels, PPRODOT as the electrochromic layer, and PEDOT: PSS as the ion storage layer, achieving high transmittance contrast (43.1%), fast response (1/1.7 s), high coloring efficiency (1296.4 cm2 C-1), and excellent cycling endurance (>99.9% retention after 2000 cycles). In addition, using ITO-poly(ethylene terephthalate) as flexible substrates, a deformable electrochromic device displaying high stability is realized, highlighting the potential use in functional wearables.

Abstract:The ionic conductivity of gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) is usually provided by the added inorganic salt ions. Here, we report a salt-free poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel electrolyte with an ionic conductivity of 3.7 × 10 −3 S cm −1 . The carboxylic groups of PAA can release free H + ions to provide ionic conductivity, which not only simplifies the preparation of GPEs, but also benefits the fabrication of GPEs with high transparency (>95.6 % from 400 to 1000 nm). The as-prepared hydrogel electrolyte is assembled into an electrochromic (EC) device (ECD) by using Prussian blue/PAA GPE/hydrated tungsten trioxide. The fabricated ECD achieves a high optical modulation (72.7 %), fast responses (2.6 s for coloration and 2.2 s for bleaching), a high coloration efficiency (172.9 cm 2 C −1 ) and good cycling stability (retaining 96.3 % of the original optical modulation after 1200 cycles). Moreover, the ECD has good energy storage properties, demonstrating a potential application for energy-storage smart windows.

Abstract:The trend of research towards more sustainable materials is pushing the application of biopolymers in a variety of unexplored fields. In this regard, hydrogels are attracting significant attention as electrolytes for flexible electrochemical devices thanks to their combination of ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. In this context, we present the use of cellulose-based hydrogels as aqueous electrolytes for electrochemical devices. These materials were obtained by crosslinking of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) with divinyl sulfone (DVS) in the presence of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), creating a semi-IPN structure. The reaction was confirmed by NMR and FTIR. The small-amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) technique revealed that the rheological properties could be conveniently varied by simply changing the gel composition. Additionally, the hydrogels presented high ionic conductivity in the range of mS cm−1. The ease of synthesis and processing of the hydrogels allowed the assembly of an all-in-one electrochromic device (ECD) with high transmittance variation, improved switching time and good color efficiency. On the other hand, the swelling ability of the hydrogels permits the tuning of the electrolyte to improve the performance of a printed Zinc/MnO2 primary battery. The results prove the potential of cellulose-based hydrogels as electrolytes for more sustainable electrochemical devices.

High Ion-Conductive Hydrogel: Soft, Elastic, with Wide Humidity Tolerance and Long-Term Stability.

Abstract:Ion-conductive hydrogels have received great attention due to their significant potential in flexible electronics. However, achieving hydrogels that simultaneously possess high ionic conductivity and stability under varying humidity conditions remains a challenge, limiting their practical applications. Herein, we propose a thermally controlled chemical cross-linking strategy to prepare an elastic and conductive hydrogel (ECH) of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with high content of H2SO4. The covalent cross-links formed effectively tackle the instability issue in high humidity of physically cross-linked PVA/H2SO4 hydrogels with high ionic conductivity, which were previously developed via the polymer-in-salt strategy. We systematically investigated the reaction conditions and clarified the methods to optimize the hydroxyl dehydration of PVA, resulting in excellent mechanical properties and ion conductivity simultaneously. The ECH demonstrates impressive ionic conductivity (up to 392 ± 49 mS cm-1) and elasticity (over 80% resilience upon stretching and compression after being equilibrated at various humidity levels for 24 days). Thanks to the excellent water retention of the high H2SO4 content, the ECH maintains an ionic conductivity exceeding 210 mS cm-1 for over 420 days at 50% relative humidity (RH) and retains over 100 mS cm-1 even after 3 days under extremely dry conditions (7% RH). These remarkable properties make the ECH an ideal candidate for applications requiring reliable ionic conductivity in diverse environmental conditions. Additionally, we demonstrated that the ECH can function as a stretchable Joule heater with high conformability for heating up objects with curved surfaces. The heating rate could reach a fast rate of ∼12 °C s-1 even when a human-safe alternating current voltage is below 36 V, attributed to the high ionic conductivity. We believe that the high performance and ease of fabrication make our hydrogels a promising candidate for use as electrolytes in flexible energy storage devices, electrolyte gates in electrochemical transistors, and artificial skin, which often face long-term stability challenges under varying humidity conditions.

Abstract:This review focuses on hydrogel electrolytes engineering for high‐performance flexible aqueous zinc ion energy storage systems. From basic characteristics, anode and cathode stabilization effects, and functional properties, the corresponding mechanisms of designing desirable hydrogel electrolytes are elaborated. To cater to the swift advance of flexible wearable electronics, there is growing demand for flexible energy storage system (ESS). Aqueous zinc ion energy storage systems (AZIESSs), characterizing safety and low cost, are competitive candidates for flexible energy storage. Hydrogels, as quasi‐solid substances, are the appropriate and burgeoning electrolytes that enable high‐performance flexible AZIESSs. However, challenges still remain in designing suitable and comprehensive hydrogel electrolyte, which provides flexible AZIESSs with high reversibility and versatility. Hence, the application of hydrogel electrolyte‐based AZIESSs in wearable electronics is restricted. A thorough review is required for hydrogel electrolyte design to pave the way for high‐performance flexible AZIESSs. This review delves into the engineering of desirable hydrogel electrolytes for flexible AZIESSs from the perspective of electrolyte designers. Detailed descriptions of hydrogel electrolytes in basic characteristics, Zn anode, and cathode stabilization effects as well as their functional properties are provided. Moreover, the application of hydrogel electrolyte‐based flexible AZIESSs in wearable electronics is discussed, expecting to accelerate their strides toward lives. Finally, the corresponding challenges and future development trends are also presented, with the hope of inspiring readers.
