Abstract:We present a more general form of the mountain pass lemma. It asserts that a C1 functional which satisfies the Palais–Smale condition admits a critical value when the connectedness of certain level sets changes. We also give an improved form of a theorem given in [A. Bahri, H. Berestycki, A perturbation method in critical point theory and applications, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 267 (1) (1981) 1–32], which characterizes the existence of the critical value by means of contractibility properties of the level sets.

Abstract:The classical Mountain Pass Lemma of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz has been studied, extended and modified in several directions. Notable examples would certainly include the generalization to locally Lipschitz functionals by K.C. Chang, analyzing the structure of the critical set in the mountain pass theorem in the works of Hofer, Pucci-Serrin and Tian, and the extension by Ghoussoub-Preiss to closed subsets in a Banach space with recent variations. In this paper, we utilize the generalized gradient of Clarke and Ekeland's variatonal principle to generalize the Ghoussoub-Preiss's Theorem in the setting of locally Lipschitz functionals. We give an application to periodic solutions of Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a new quantitative deformation lemma, and then gain a new mountain pass theorem in Hilbert spaces. By using the new mountain pass theorem, we obtain the new existence of two nontrivial periodic solutions for a class of nonlinear second-order discrete systems, which greatly improves the result in (Zhou et al. in Proc. R. Soc. Edinb. A 134:1013–1022, <span><a href="#CR1">2004</a></span>).

Abstract:This paper addresses the Mountain Pass Theorem for locally Lipschitz functions on finite-dimensional vector spaces in terms of tangencies. Namely, let $f \colon \mathbb R^n \to \mathbb R$ be a locally Lipschitz function with a mountain pass geometry. Let $$c := \inf_{\gamma \in \mathcal A}\max_{t\in[0,1]}f(\gamma(t)),$$ where $\mathcal{A}$ is the set of all continuous paths joining $x^*$ to $y^*.$ We show that either $c$ is a critical value of $f$ or $c$ is a tangency value at infinity of $f.$ This reduces to the Mountain Pass Theorem of Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz in the case where the function $f$ is definable (such as, semi-algebraic) in an o-minimal structure.

Abstract:We study a generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model and obtain periodic and heteroclinic mountain pass solutions. Heteroclinic mountain pass solution in the second laminations is new to the generalized Frenkel-Kontorova model. Our proof follows that of Bolotin and Rabinowitz for an Allen-Cahn equation, which is different with heat flow method for finding critical point of Frenkel-Kontorova model in the literature. The proofs depend on suitable choices of functionals and working spaces. We also study the multiplicity of these mountain pass solutions.

Abstract:We generalize a theorem of Bismut–Zhang, which extends the Cheeger–Müller theorem on Ray–Singer torsion and Reidemeister torsion, to the case of infinite Galois covering spaces. Our result is stated in the framework of extended cohomology, and generalizes in this case a recent result of Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai. It does not use the determinant class condition and thus also (potentially) generalizes several results on L2-torsions due to Burghelea, Friedlander, Kappeler and McDonald. We combine the framework developed by Braverman–Carey–Farber–Mathai on the determinant of extended cohomology with the heat kernel method developed in the original paper of Bismut–Zhang to prove our result.
Anomaly and invertible field theory with higher-form symmetry: Extended group cohomology

Abstract:In the realm of invertible symmetry, the topological approach based on classifying spaces dominates the classification of 't Hooft anomalies and symmetry protected topological phases. We explore the alternative algebraic approach based on cochains that directly characterize the lattice lagrangian of invertible field theories and the anomalous phase factor of topological operator rearrangements. In the current literature, the algebraic approach has been systematically described for only finite 0-form symmetries. In this initial work, we generalize it to finite higher-form symmetries with trivial higher-group structure. We carefully analyze the algebraic cochains and abstract a purely algebraic structure that naturally generalizes group cohomology. Using techniques from simplicial homotopy theory, we show its isomorphism to the cohomology of classifying spaces. The proof is based on an explicit construction of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces and their products.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:We consider the elliptic problem $$ -\Delta u-\lambda u=a(x) g(u), $$ with $a(x)$ sign-changing and $g(u)$ behaving like $u^p$, $p> 1$. Under suitable conditions on $g(u)$ and $a(x)$, we extend the multiplicity, existence and nonexistence results known to hold for this equation on a bounded domain (with standard homogeneous boundary conditions) to the case that the bounded domain is replaced by the entire space $\mathbb R^N$. More precisely, we show that there exists $\Lambda> 0$ such that this equation on $\mathbb R^N$ has no positive solution for $\lambda> \Lambda$, at least two positive solutions for $\lambda\in (0,\Lambda)$, and at least one positive solution for $\lambda\in (-\infty,0]\cup\{\Lambda\}$. Our approach is based on some descriptions of mountain pass solutions of semilinear elliptic problems on bounded domains obtained by a special version of the mountain pass theorem. These results are of independent interests.

Abstract:One of our main goals in this paper is to understand the behavior of limit sets of a diverging sequence of Schottky groups in the group of isometries of the N-dimensional hyperbolic space. This leads us to a generalization of a classical theorem of Bowen on variations of Hausdorff dimension of limit sets; and to a method of transforming a diverging sequence of Schottky groups into an almost converging sequence in the group of isometries of the infinite dimensional hyperbolic space. Our results apply in particular to an example of McMullen and generalize a previous work by Mehmeti and Dang.

Limits of limit sets in rank-one symmetric spaces

Abstract:We consider the question of continuity of limit sets for sequences of geometrically finite subgroups of isometry groups of rank-one symmetric spaces, and prove analogues of classical (Kleinian) theorems in this context. In particular we show that, assuming strong convergence of the sequence of subgroups, the limit sets vary continuously with respect to Hausdorff distance, and if the sequence is weakly type-preserving, the sequence of Cannon-Thurston maps also converges uniformly to a limiting Cannon-Thurston map. Our approach uses the theory of extended geometrically finite representations, developed recently by the second author.

Abstract:A recent development in graph theory is to study local separators, vertex sets that need not separate graphs globally but just locally. We use this idea to conjecture an extension of Stallings' theorem to finite nilpotent groups. We provide an example demonstrating that the assumption of nilpotency is necessary, and prove a stronger form of this conjecture for low connectivities, as follows.

Abstract:We give a generalization to convex co-compact semigroups of a beautiful theorem of Patterson-Sullivan, telling that the critical exponent (that is the exponential growth rate) equals the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set (that is the smallest closed non-empty invariant subset), for a isometries discrete group of a proper hyperbolic space with compact boundary. To do that, we introduce a notion of entropy, which generalize the notion of critical exponent of discrete groups, and we show that it is equal to the upper bound of critical exponents of Schottky sub-semigroups (which are semigroups having the simplest dynamic). We obtains several others corollaries, such that the lower semi-continuity of the entropy, the fact that the critical exponent of a separate semigroup, that is defined as an upper limit, is in fact a true limit, and we obtain the existence of "big" Schottky sub-semigroups in discrete groups of isometries.

Abstract:The concentration compactness framework for semilinear elliptic equations without compactness, set originally by P.-L.Lions for constrained minimization in the case of homogeneous nonlinearity, is extended here to the case of general nonlinearities in the standard mountain pass setting of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz. In these setting, existence of solutions at the mountain pass level is verified under a single penalty condition analogous to that in the Lions' case. Problems on the whole space and problems with critical nonlinearity are considered. Particular attention is given to nonhomogeneous critical nonlinearities that oscillate about the "critical stem".

On the symmetry of finite sums of exponentials II

Abstract:In this note we extend our study of the rich geometry of the graph of a curve defined as the weighted sum of two exponentials. Let $\gamma_{a,b}^{s}: [0,1] \rightarrow \mathbb{C}$ be defined as $$\gamma_{a,b}^s(t) = (1-s) \exp(2 \pi i a t) + (1+s) \exp(2\pi i b t) $$ in which $1\leq a < b$ are two positive integers and $s \in [-1,1]$. In the first part we determined the symmetry groups of the graphs of $\gamma_{a,b}:=\gamma_{a,b}^0$. The main aim of this note is to study the continuous transition of the graph of the curve when $s$ changes from $-1$ to $1$. As a main result we determine the winding numbers $\mathrm{wind}(\gamma_{a,b}^s,0)$ for $s \in [-1,1] \setminus \{ 0 \}$ as well as the set of cusp points of each such curve. This sheds further light on our initial symmetry result and provides more non-trivial albeit easy-to-state examples of advanced concepts of geometry and topology.
