Abstract:<p>Control coupling and synchronization of lasers has been a promising topic, while complex lasers in disordered system make this more challenging and interesting for their potential applications in the internet of everything. Here, a way to realize the interaction and synchronization of random microcavity lasers, is proposed. The lasers are developed based on homemade amorphous microcavities, performing as nodes that can work in a single-shot coherent random lasing regime. The nodes connect with each other by multimode fibers with variable coupling strength, and their multiple lasing modes can be well-synchronized pulse-by-pulse through injection locking. A spectral coding method is demonstrated, providing an attractive way to generate and share information between disordered nodes. The synchronization is also extended to a one-to-many network, laying a solid foundation for the study of photonic interconnection and networking of complex systems.</p>

Abstract:We reviewed our recent studies on chaotic microcavity lasers. Although most microcavities are designed to have regular shapes, boundary roughness, which is introduced unintentionally during the fabrication process, can throw the regular ray dynamics into chaos. Fortunately, the dynamical localization makes the perform- ance of microcavity lasers robust with respect to the boundary roughness and corresponding ray chaos. In a chaotic microcavity, the lasing modes may be pulled away from the cavity boundary to avoid the reduction of lasing gain by surface recombination. Moreover, the carriers injected to the central region of a cavity can contribute to lasing. Despite counter-intuitive, a chaotic microcav- ity laser could produces directional output beams. Unfortunately the threshold of chaotic microcavity lasers is usually high. We demon- strated that the lasing threshold in a fully chaotic open microcavity can be minimized by tailoring its shape factor.

Abstract:We numerically investigate the chaos synchronization and message transmission between two mutual coupling semiconductor lasers (MCSLs) subject to identical unidirectional injections (UIs) from an external cavity semiconductor laser (ECSL). The synchronization between the MCSLs is realized through injection locking in conjunction with symmetric operation. The simulation results show that stable isochronal synchronization between the MCSLs can be achieved under proper driving injections. This type of synchronization is robust to parameter mismatch up to tens of percentage and frequency detuning of several tens of gigahertz, which is much better than those of the MCSLs systems with self-feedback. Moreover, the investigations on the mutual chaos pass filtering effects and the message transmission indicate that the isochronal synchronization allows mutual message exchange with a bit rate higher than 10 Gb/s, when the chaos modulation technology is adopted. In addition, the MCSLs can synchronize with the ECSL for proper UI and MC, which provides an opportunity for array chaos synchronization and chaos communication networks. Finally, leader/laggard synchronization can also be achieved in the proposed system.

Abstract:This paper reports a coherent random microcavity laser that consists of a disordered cladding（scattering） layer and a light-amplification core filled with dye solution. Cold cavity analysis indicates that the random resonance modes supported by the proposed cavity can be effectively excited. With introducing the gain material, random lasing by specific modes is observed to show typical features of coherent random lasers, such as spatially incoherent emission of random modes. By inserting a metal nanoparticle into the gain region, emission wavelength/intensity of the random lasers can be considerably tuned by changing the position of the inserted nanoparticle,opening up new avenues for controlling output of random lasers and sensing applications（e.g., small particleidentification, location, etc.）.

Abstract:Chaos synchronization and message transmission of a mutually coupled system consisting of two semiconductor lasers (SLs) and a partially transparent mirror (PTM) in between are investigated theoretically. Analytical results show that two types of chaos synchronization schemes, named as isochronal synchronization (IS) and leader/laggard synchronization (LLS), can be achieved by adjusting the reflectivity and position of PTM. By establishing SIMULINK model, numerical simulations illustrate that as the PTM is positioned at the center of two lasers, IS is available when the reflectivity of PTM is moderate. The LLS is achieved when the reflectivity of PTM equals to 0.5, which means feedback strength equals to coupling strength. Its lag time is just determined by the difference of feedback delay time. The investigations of mutual chaos pass filtering (MCPF) effects and the secure chaotic communication simulations indicate that IS allows real-time bidirectional message transmission on a public-channel, while LLS can achieve higher security chaotic communication by using its lag time as cryptography key. The demonstrated system can be used as a rudiment of array chaos communications system.

Abstract:The generation and synchronization of unpredictability-enhanced chaos in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are investigated numerically. The master VCSEL is subject to variable-polarization optical feedback. Two injection schemes, the polarization-preserved optical injection (PPOI) and variable-polarization optical injection (VPOI) are considered for the slave VCSELs. The influences of unpredictability degree on the synchronization quality and the synchronization properties of unpredictability-enhanced chaos are focused on. For the PPOI scheme, the synchronization quality is hardly affected by the unpredictability degree; high-quality synchronization can be achieved between unpredictability-enhanced chaos due to injection locking. However, for the VPOI scheme, the unpredictability degree affects the synchronization quality significantly. High degree of unpredictability leads to low synchronization quality. Only the low-unpredictability chaos can be well synchronized, while the unpredictability-enhanced chaos cannot be synchronized even with large injection strength. The achievement of unpredictability-enhanced chaos synchronization by the PPOI scheme is extremely useful for the security-enhanced VCSELs-based chaos communication systems.

Abstract:The cavity form of complex microcavity lasers predominantly relies on disordered structures, whether found in nature or artificially prepared. These structures, characterized by disorder, facilitate random lasing through the feedback effect of the cavity boundary and the internal scattering medium via various mechanisms. In this paper, we report on a random fiber laser employing a disordered scattering cladding medium affixed to the inner cladding of a hollow-core fiber. The internal flowing liquid gain establishes a stable liquid-core waveguide environment, enabling long-term directional coupling output for random laser emission. Through theoretical analysis and experimental validation, we demonstrate that controlling the disorder at the cavity boundary allows liquid-core fiber random microcavities to exhibit random lasing output with different mechanisms. This provides a broad platform for in-depth research into the generation and control of complex microcavity lasers, as well as the detection of scattered matter within micro- and nanostructures.

Abstract:Enhanced chaos synchronization communication between vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is investigated numerically, by adopting a polarization communication protocol where one polarization mode is used as the chaotic carrier and the orthogonal polarization mode is used as the disturbed signal. The chaos synchronization quality for the receiver laser (RL) and attacker laser (AL) are analyzed in terms of the cross-correlation coefficient. There are two distinct regions of good synchronization quality in the injection parameters space. In the first region, good synchronization quality can be ensured for both the RL and AL. In the second region, only the RL can realize chaos synchronization. We further discuss the security enhancement by comparing the communication performance between RL and AL for injection parameters within the second region. The results show that successful and robust decoding is only achievable for the RL.

Abstract:Most of the previous treatments of chaos synchronization use common optical feedback. In this paper, we introduce a new feedback type called phase conjugate feedback in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSEL) to achieve synchronization. For comparison, models of synchronization using both phase conjugated feedback (PCF) and common optical feedback (COF) are given, where the nonlinear and dispersion effects on transmitted signals in a fibre link are also considered. Numerical simulation shows two peaks when calculating the shifted correlation coefficient. In the phase conjugate feedback scheme, the larger peak always corresponds to anticipating synchronization while this does not hold true in the common optical feedback scheme. When anticipating synchronization takes place, the value of the correlation coefficient for phase conjugate feedback is larger than that for common optical feedback, and their discrimination is more than 0.1. Decoded messages in chaotic shift keying undergo less distortions when the phase conjugate feedback scheme is considered, because of the distortion correction characteristics of phase conjugate light. All this indicates that the synchronization performance of the former scheme is better than that of the latter.

Abstract:It is well known that the dynamical characteristics of nano-lasers (NLs) have been extensively studied, but there is limited research on chaotic synchronization communication. In this paper, we propose a closed-loop system of mutually coupled NLs. Firstly, the autocorrelation function is employed to evaluate the capability of the system to conceal the time-delayed signature (TDS), and then, based on this, we specifically analyze the effects of the injection strength, frequency detuning, and parameter mismatch of two NLs on the chaotic synchronization performance, as well as the bidirectional communication. The detailed studies indicate that the proposed closed-loop mutually coupled system based on NLs can achieve high-quality chaotic synchronization with a low TDS and large bandwidth. In addition, the system maintains high-quality chaotic synchronization and communication performance even under significant parameter mismatch.

Abstract:Based on the theoretic modal of the erbium-doped fiber dual-ring lasers,the chaotic synchronization by using multivariable unidirectionally coupled scheme is set up.Two different fiber lasers have been investigated and the condition for realizing chaotic synchronization is given.Numerical simulation of the model is established on Simulink and results show that one of the erbium-doped fiber dual-ring lasers as the master laser drives the another slave laser,and they can be completely synchronized even though the decay rate of the two lasers are different and the larger the feedback coefficient is,the faster two lasers achieve synchronization.The feedback coefficient have relationship with decay rate and coupling coefficient.It is also shown that the initial value of the lasers cannot affect the synchronized system,the synchronization is maintained very well.And when the effects of the Gauss noises are considered in the system,they can still reach good synchronization.

Abstract:Chaos synchronization and message transmission between two semiconductor lasers with extremely unsymmetrical bidirectional injections (EUBIs) are discussed. By using EUBIs, synchronization is realized through injection locking. Numerical results show that if the laser subjected to strong injection serves as the receiver, chaos pass filtering (CPF) of the system is similar to that of unidirectional coupled systems. Moreover, if the other laser serves as the receiver, a stronger CPF can be obtained. Finally, we demonstrate that messages can be extracted successfully from either of the two transmission directions of the system.

Abstract:This review systematically examines various types of microcavity complex lasers from the perspective of microcavity structures with different degrees of disorder. It primarily focuses on the historical development, characteristics, regulation, and applications of disordered microcavity lasers and concludes with a discussion on the future trends in the development of microcavity complex lasers. Microstructures, characterized by gain, nonlinearity, internal scattering, and boundary effects, offer an exceptional platform for exploring complex optical phenomena such as random lasing, chaos, and multidimensional speckles. Specifically, complex lasers generated within microcavities and optical fibers, where strong light confinement and scattering play diverse roles, have become a significant branch of laser research. Recently, the rapid advancement of materials, micro‐nano technologies, and artificial intelligence has introduced new opportunities and challenges for the generation, control, and application of complex lasers. This review systematically examines various types of microcavity complex lasers from the perspective of microcavity structures with different degrees of disorder. It primarily focuses on the historical development, characteristics, regulation, and applications of disordered microcavity lasers and concludes with a discussion on the future trends in the development of microcavity complex lasers.

Abstract:Lasing was achieved in a new type of random laser: the planar random microcavity laser. The laser consists of a planar microcavity with a random gain layer. Optical confinement by the two-dimensional random cavity and the one-dimensional planar microcavity drastically reduces the number of resonant modes. As a result, the laser output is highly directional (the divergence angle is 1.68 degrees) with an extremely narrow-linewidth and ultralow threshold. All these phenomena are explained in terms of the coupling of random cavity modes and planar microcavity modes. The results demonstrate an important step towards applications of random lasers.

Abstract:A theoretical construction of one-to-many (OTM) and many-to-one (MTO) chaos synchronization communications using semiconductor lasers is presented. One center laser provides strong injections (strong link) to other side lasers, and the side lasers also provide weak injections (weak link) to the center one. Simulation results show that the side lasers synchronize with the center laser through injection-locking. In addition, messages transmitted via the strong links or the weak links experience strong chaos pass filtering, enabling us to realize OTM and MTO communications.

Abstract:We propose and numerically demonstrate a secure optical communication scheme in a small-world semiconductor lasers network based on cluster chaos synchronization and false-message scrambling. According to the symmetries of network, the semiconductor lasers are divided into sets of heterogeneous coupled clusters. The properties of cluster chaos synchronization, the performance and security of optical chaotic communication, as well as the influence of false message on the synchronization of clusters are systematically investigated. It is demonstrated that, by properly setting the parameters of the lasers network, high-quality chaos synchronization can be achieved between the intra-cluster lasers, whereas incoherent states are observed between inter-cluster lasers. Moreover, by inserting false messages into the inter-cluster couplings, the privacy of chaotic carriers transmitted over the inter-cluster public links can be significantly enhanced, as such secure bidirectional communication among intra-cluster lasers is achievable with a message bit rate of several Gbit/s. Compared with the conventional point-to-point communication systems, the proposed scheme supports multipoint-to-multipoint secure communications.

Abstract:The properties of the leader-laggard chaos synchronization (LLCS) in two mutually coupled external-cavity semiconductor lasers are studied systematically. We theoretically analyze the general conditions for the LLCS based on the symmetric operation mechanism and numerically investigate the influences of operation parameters, the mismatch robustness, the chaos pass filtering effects, the communication performance, and the security of the system. It is demonstrated that stable LLCS, which allows simultaneous bidirectional message exchange in virtue of mutual chaos pass filtering effect, can be achieved in a wide operation region; moreover, high-quality LLCS and satisfactory communication performance can be maintained under a relatively large device parameter mismatch. Compared with the isochronal chaos synchronization in the same system, LLCS provides a wider operation region, a better mismatch robustness, and a stronger chaos pass filtering effect. In addition, the investigations on the security of private key message transmission under some potential attacks indicate that the security can be enhanced by increasing the bit rate moderately, exchanging messages with different bit rates, or monitoring the LLCS.

Abstract:Nonlinear dynamics of mutually coupled vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are studied theoretically. We consider both identical and nonidentical cases, respectively. For identical cases, where the device parameters and the operating conditions are the same, both lasers show the same behaviors with an identical output, and some typical nonlinear states, including period-one, period-two, multi-period and chaos, are observed. However, for nonidentical cases, the symmetric behaviors are broken. Due to the mismatch of the bias current of these two lasers, the system nonlinearity is increased and the synchronization performance is degraded greatly. Nevertheless, it is found that the coupled VCSELs can still exhibit a form of localized synchronization when they operate under the periodic state introduced by either the weak coupling or the frequency detuning.

Abstract:A chaotic optical communication system based on external optical feedback is constructed. By introducing the Langevin noise sources, the master-slave rate equations including spontaneous emission noise characteristics are deduced. Utilizing the obtained mathematical model, two kinds of possible chaos synchronization in the system, i.e. complete chaos synchronization and generalized mode-locking chaos synchronization, are studied. The effects of the spontaneous emission noises of the two lasers on the two types of synchronization as well as the chaotic outputs of the transmitter and receiver are discucsed. Finally, for a sequence of pseudorandom digital bits at 2.5Gb/s bit rate, the encoding/decoding process basing on chaotic masking method is presented, and the effects of noise on decoding performance are examined.
