Abstract:Silicon photonics have been extensively demonstrated as the promising solution for low-cost and high-performance transmission network. We show that silicon Mach-Zehnder IQ modulators are capable for next-generation metro network applications. The transmission distances cover whole metro transmission range, up to 960 km. We experimentally demonstrated different modulation formats for different scenarios with these modulators. For 320-km transmission, 56 Gb/s single-sideband discrete multitone transmission was achieved. For 480 km, 80 453.2-Gb/s polarization division multiplexing (PDM) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing hybrid 8-64 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) dense wavelength division multiplexing signals transmission was achieved. Finally, 80 337.9-Gb/s transmission of Nyquist-WDM PDM-16QAM was achieved for 960 km.

This experiment was successfully enabled by digital-signal-processing (DSP) pre-equalization of transmitter-side impairments and DSP post-equalization of the channel and receiver-side impairments. Nyquist-band is considered in the pre- equalization to enhance the tolerance of the polarization-division multiplexing 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation to the aggressive spectral shaping. The bit error rate for each of the 6 channels is smaller than the limitation of the forward-error-correction limit of 3.8 ×10-3 after 1200-km SMF-28 transmission.

Abstract:Intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) is a promising solution for short-reach links. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate transmission of 128-Gb/s discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-spread 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in an IM/DD optical system. Vestigial sideband (VSB) modulation with 20-dB suppression ratio enabled by a cost-effective interleave or a tunable optical filter (TOF) is employed to eliminate chromatic dispersion (CD) induced power fading. Meanwhile, a combination of advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, such as pre-equalization, nonlinearity equalization (NE), and decision-directed least mean square (DDLMS), are utilized to mitigate the system distortions and improve system performance. By using this scheme, the 32-GBd DFT-spread OFDM signals can be successfully transmitted over 320-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with the measured bit error ratio (BER) under the soft-decision forward-error- correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 x 10(-2). We also achieved 144-Gb/s for 80-km SSMF transmission. Additionally, 4 x 128-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) DFT-S OFDM signals transmission over 320-km SSMF is experimentally investigated. To the best of our knowledge, this work reports the longest transmission distance for beyond 100-Gb/s IM/DD system.

Abstract:We have transmitted a 7 x 224 Gb/s/ch Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexed signal over a 1600-km conventional single-mode fiber (SMF-28) with 80 km per span and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier-only amplification. Each channel on the 50-GHz grid is modulated using polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature-phase-shift-keying at 56 Gbaud giving a record spectral efficiency of 4 b/s/Hz. Both the post filter and the Viterbi maximum likelihood sequence detection are introduced into digital signal processing, to suppress the undesired noise, linear crosstalk enhancement, and filtering effects. The bit error ratio of all channels after transmission over a 1600-km SMF-28 is smaller than the forward error correction limit of 3.8x10(-3).

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.

Abstract:By an orchestra of multiple enabling techniques at the transmitter and receiver, we experimentally demonstrate a single-channel 102.4-Gb/s transmission up to 240-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) at C-band with direct detection. At the transmitter, we realize Nyquist-pulse shaping PAM-4 (NPAM-4) modulation and single-sideband modulation by using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator. At the receiver, we use FFE and high-order terms of Volterra filter, Hilbert superposition cancellation, to mitigate the linear and nonlinear interference. The fiber dispersion can be compensated at either the transmitter or receiver.

Abstract:We demonstrate three-channel WDM transmission of 12.84-Tb/s/ch polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 64-QAM over 320-km SMF-28 with hybrid amplification spans. Each 10-Tb/s superchannel comprises one hundred Nyquist DWDM subchannels in 1275-GHz spectrum occupancy, yielding a spectral efficiency of 7.9 b/s/Hz. The BER of all channels after transmission over 320 km is measured smaller than 2×10-2, the third generation FEC limit.

Abstract:We demonstrate the transmission of beyond-100 Gb/s Nyquist half-cycle 16-quadrature-amplitude modulation (16-QAM) subcarrier modulation (SCM) signals with a compact silicon-based GeSi electro-absorption modulator. In combination with nonlinear compensation, the measured bit-error rate (BER) after 2 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission is below the 20% hard-decision forward error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 1.5x10(-2) for single-lane 160 Gb/s operation. The presented modulator shows great potential for high-capacity and low-power-consumption silicon-photonic transceivers for data-center interconnects.

Abstract:Nyquist pulse shaping is a promising technique for high-speed optical fiber transmission. We experimentally demonstrate the generation and transmission of a 1.76Tb/s, polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) Nyquist pulse shaping super-channel over 714km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) with Erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) only amplification. The superchannel consists of 40 subcarriers tightly spaced at 6.25GHz with a spectral efficiency of 7.06b/s/Hz. The experiment is successfully enabled with the modified single carrier frequency domain estimation and equalization (SCFDE) scheme by performing training sequence based channel estimation in frequency domain and subsequent channel equalization in time domain. After 714km transmission, the bit-error-rate (BER) of all subcarriers are lower than the forward error correction limit of 3.8 x 10(-3). (C) 2013 Optical Society of America
