Abstract:We propose an approach to generate neuron-like spikes of vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) by multi-frequency switching. A stable temporal spiking sequence has been realized both by numerical simulations and experiments with a pulse width of sub-nanosecond, which is 8 orders of magnitude faster than ones from biological neurons. Moreover, a controllable spiking coding scheme using multi-frequency switching is designed and a sequence with 20 symbols is generated at the speed of up to 1 Gbps by experiment. Furthermore, we investigate the factors related to time delay of spiking generation, including injection strength and frequency detuning. With proper manipulation of detuning frequency, the spiking generation delay can be controlled upto 60 ns, which is 6 times longer than the delay controlled by intensity. The multi-frequency switching provides another manipulation dimension for spiking generation and will be helpful to exploit the abundant spatial-temporal features of spiking neural network. We believe the proposed VCSEL-neuron, as a single physical device for generating spiking signals with variable time delay, will pave the way for future photonic spiking neural networks.

Abstract:Based on the Yamada model and rate equation model of vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with a saturable absorber (SA), we numerically simulate the spiking response of VCSEL–based optical spiking neuron under incoherent and coherent perturbations, respectively. First, we simply analyze the dynamics of the laser system based on the Yamada model. Then we discuss the dependence of spiking characteristics, including threshold, response time, response spike’s amplitude and pulse-width, with the amplitude of perturbations, the driving current of gain and SA region for single optical pulse injection. Finally, we study the dependence of relative refractory period of VCSEL-based optical spiking neuron with different amplitudes of perturbations. Since VCSELs are ease of integration, it provides new opportunities for realization of large-scale and ultrafast neuromorphic computing systems.

Abstract:The dynamical response properties of photonic neuron based on vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) subject to orthogonal polarized optical pulse injection stimuli have been numerically investigated. Based on the well-known spin flip model, we first reproduce some experimental findings of neuron-like dynamics in VCSELs, such as phasic spiking with a single abrupt pulse, and tonic spiking with multiple periodic pulses. Besides, we further go beyond in three directions and obtain several novel results. The operating parameter ranges corresponding to different neuron-like dynamics are identified by extensive bifurcation analysis. In addition, the effect of the time-varying pump current on the neuron-like dynamics for VCSELs under given optical injecting pulse strength is also discussed. For a given pump current, the spiking frequency dependence on the stimuli strength is further revealed in VCSELs with time-varying optical pulse injection. Such controllable neuron-like response dynamics and spiking frequency dependence in VCSELs are interesting and valuable for ultrafast photonic neuromorphic systems and neuron-inspired photonic information processing.

Abstract:We propose a photonic neural system composed of three cascaded vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with an embedded saturable absorbers (VCSEL-SAs) and numerically investigate the encoding, propagation and storage characteristics of the spiking patterns in this system. The results show that, with suitable perturbation strength, the first VCSEL-SA (VCSEL-SA1) can convert the stimulus into spike response. Increasing both the perturbation strength and the bias current of active region is beneficial to improve the conversion rate. Moreover, the spiking patterns generated by VCSEL-SA1 can be stably propagated into another two VCSEL-SAs (VCSEL-SA2 and VCSEL-SA3) with a certain delay through adjusting the coupling weight. Additionally, after introducing a feedback into VCSEL-SA1, the fired spiking patterns can be successfully stored in this proposed system. The obtained results can offer great potential for future, brain-inspired ultrafast neuromorphic computing system.

Abstract:Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are highly promising devices for the construction of neuromorphic photonic information processing systems, due to their numerous desirable properties such as low power consumption, high modulation speed, compactness, and ease of manufacturing. Of particular interest is the ability of VCSELs to exhibit neural-like spiking responses, much like biological neurons, but at ultrafast sub-nanosecond rates; thus offering great prospects for high-speed light-enabled neuromorphic (spike-based) processors. Recent works have shown the use the spiking dynamics in VCSELs for pattern recognition and image processing problems such as image data encoding and edge-feature detection. Additionally, VCSELs have also been used recently as nonlinear elements in photonic reservoir computing (RC) implementations, yielding excellent state of the art operation. This work introduces and experimentally demonstrates for the first time the new concept of a Ghz-rate photonic spiking neural network (SNN) built with a single VCSEL neuron. The reported system effectively implements a photonic VCSEL-based spiking reservoir computer, and demonstrates its successful application to a complex nonlinear classification task. Importantly, the proposed system benefits from a highly hardware-friendly, inexpensive realization (built with a single VCSEL and off-the-shelf fibre-optic components), for high-speed (GHz-rate inputs) and low-power (sub-mW optical input power) photonic operation. These results open new pathways towards future neuromorphic photonic spike-based information processing systems based upon VCSELs (or other laser types) for novel ultrafast machine learning and AI hardware.

Abstract:Driven by the increasing significance of artificial intelligence, the field of neuromorphic (brain-inspired) photonics is attracting increasing interest, promising new, high-speed, and energy-efficient computing hardware for key applications in information processing and computer vision. Widely available photonic devices, such as vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs), offer highly desirable properties for photonic implementations of neuromorphic systems, such as high-speed and low energy operation, neuron-like dynamical responses, and ease of integration into chip-scale systems. Here, we experimentally demonstrate encoding of digital image data into continuous, rate-coded, up to GHz-speed optical spike trains with a VCSEL-based photonic spiking neuron. Moreover, our solution makes use of off-the-shelf fiber-optic components with operation at telecom wavelengths, therefore making the system compatible with current optical network and data center technologies. This VCSEL-based spiking encoder paves the way toward optical spike-based data processing and ultrafast neuromorphic vision systems.

Abstract:The concept of neuromorphic computation, implemented by physical devices, has obtained significant attention owing to its exceptional performance in handling specific tasks. These devices have the characteristics of neuron-like output and can mimic the brain's methodology of information transmission and computation. However, a significant limitation lies in the prevalent encoding methods for neuromorphic computation, which primarily rely on either rate or temporal encoding, thereby causing inefficiencies in the execution of computational tasks. In this article, we introduce an effective and biologically inspired encoding approach for a photonic spiking neural network (PSNN), utilizing vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with an embedded saturable absorber (VCSELs-SA). Our method encodes data information by modulating the intensity of an injection rectangular pulse, which subsequently triggers the emission of spikes from the VCSELs-SA. The proposed PSNN can recognize four spiking patterns and classify the Iris dataset. What's more, we get an accuracy of 94.67% in the classification task with only six neurons.

Abstract:The spike encoding properties of two polarization-resolved modes in vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with an embedded saturable absorber (VCSEL-SA) are investigated numerically, based on the spin-flip model combined with the Yamada model. The results show that the external input optical pulse (EIOP) can be encoded into spikes in X-polarization (XP) mode, Y-polarization (YP) mode, or both XP and YP modes. Furthermore, the numerical bifurcation diagrams show that a lower (higher) strength of EIOP is beneficial for generating tonic (phasic) spikes; a small amplitude anisotropy contributes to wide (narrow) tonic spiking range in XP (YP) mode; a large current leads to low thresholds of EIOP strength for both XP and YP modes. However, the spike encoding properties are hardly affected by the phase anisotropy. The encoding rate is shown to be improved by increasing EIOP strength. Moreover, dual-channel polarization-multiplexed spike encoding can also be achieved in a single VCSEL-SA. To the best of our knowledge, such single channel polarization-resolved and dual-channel polarization-multiplexed spike encoding schemes have not yet been reported. Hence, this work is valuable for ultrafast photonic neuromorphic systems and brain-inspired information processing.

Abstract:Multiple controllable spiking patterns are obtained in a 1310 nm Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) in response to induced perturbations and for two different cases of polarized optical injection, namely parallel and orthogonal. Achievement of reproducible spiking responses in VCSELs operating at the telecom wavelengths offers great promise for future uses of these devices in ultrafast neuromorphic photonic systems for non-traditional computing applications.

Abstract:We propose to generate excitatory and inhibitory neuron-like dynamics in vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) by applying simultaneously the orthogonally-polarized CW optical injection (OPCWOI) and parallelly-polarized pulse optical injection stimulus. Based on the spin flip model, excitatory and inhibitory neuron-like dynamics accompanying with reverse polarization switching is numerically investigated. It is found that, due to the injection locking effect or beating effect between two injected fields, the excitatory phasic and tonic spiking dynamics can be obtained in the originally dominated polarization mode. Moreover, the unwanted relaxation oscillation followed by the excitatory spiking dynamics at the end of the stimulus pulse, which is present in previous reported photonic neuron based on the VCSELs subject to a single orthogonally-polarized optical pulse injection, can be completely suppressed. In addition, the inhibition of tonic spiking dynamics can also be achieved, and the transition from tonic spiking dynamics to phasic bursting dynamics can be obtained, when the two injected fields have the same frequency. These results are interesting and valuable for the ultrafast photonic neuromorphic systems and neuron-inspired photonic information processing.

Abstract:We propose a neuron-like optical spiking generation based on silicon microcavity. In the setup, the micro optomechanical oscillation modulates the silicon cavity, and combined with the coupling between the optical oscillation and spontaneous self-sustained oscillation. The silicon-based photon microcavity chip enters the nonlinear dynamical state, and finally output neuron like spiking pulses. We prove that the optical pulse have all the typical characteristics of nerve spiking pulse, including 4 stages: excited state, oscillated state, relative refractory period I and relative refractory period II. The spiking pulse width is only about 4ns, which is about 1 million times faster than typically biological neuron spiking. Compared with the traditional neuron scheme, the chip size of our optical microcavity has reached about 10 gm, being highly fast processing networks. Especially, the neuron-like spiking is implemented on silicon materials, owning the natural compatibility with CMOS process and good integration scalability. We have also established corresponding physical models for theoretical simulation, and the results show that neuron-like optical spiking can be generated in silicon-based photonic microcavity.

Abstract:In this Letter, we propose an optical delay-weight spiking neural network (SNN) architecture constructed by cascaded frequency and intensity-switched vertical-cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs). The synaptic delay plasticity of frequency-switched VCSELs is deeply studied by numeri-cal analysis and simulations. The principal factors related to the delay manipulation are investigated with the tunable spiking delay up to 60 ns. Moreover, a two-layer spiking neu-ral network based on the delay-weight supervised learning algorithm is applied to a spiking sequence pattern training task and then a classification task of the Iris dataset. The proposed optical SNN provides a compact and cost-efficient solution for delay weighted computing architecture without considerations of extra programmable optical delay lines. Abstract:We propose and investigate an image encoding and recovery scheme based on an excited 1550-nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL). The results show that VCSEL subjected to orthogonal optical injection can exhibit some neuron-like behaviors including injection locking, spiking exciting and inhibition, and damped oscillations. Based on the excited spiking patterns, the image can be encoded into continuous, up to GHz-rate optical spike trains, and then be successfully recovered after adopting a post-processing technique. Additionally, the experimental results are almost identical to that of theoretical simulations, and the image recovery accuracy (IRA) can reach 98.3% in experiment. This proposed image encoding and recovery approach can open a new window for future high-speed all-optical signal processing in the photonic spiking neural networks (PSNN).

High-Speed Time Series Prediction with a GHz-rate Photonic Spiking Neural Network built with a single VCSEL

Abstract:Photonic technologies hold significant potential for creating innovative, high-speed, efficient and hardware-friendly neuromorphic computing platforms. Neuromorphic photonic methods leveraging ubiquitous, technologically mature and cost-effective Vertical-Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are of notable interest. VCSELs have demonstrated the capability to replicate neuronal optical spiking responses at ultrafast rates. These characteristics have triggered research into applying these key-enabling devices in spike-based photonic computing. Here, a GHz-rate photonic Spiking Neural Network (p-SNN) using a single VCSEL is reported, and its application to a complex time-series prediction task is demonstrated for the first time. The VCSEL p-SNN combined with a technique to induce network memory, is applied to perform multi-step-ahead predictions of a chaotic time-series. By providing the feedforward p-SNN with only two temporally separated inputs excellent accuracy is experimentally demonstrated over a range of prediction horizons. VCSEL-based p-SNNs therefore offer ultrafast, efficient operation in complex predictive tasks whilst enabling hardware implementations. The inherent attributes and performance of VCSEL p-SNNs hold great promise for use in future light-enabled neuromorphic computing hardware.

Abstract:Neuromorphic computation based on physical devices has attracted wide attention due to its high performance in solving specific tasks. The chosen devices usually imitate the way the brain transmits information and calculates. However, the majority of existing encoding methods for neuromorphic computation rely on either rate or temporal information, resulting in inefficiency in accomplishing computing tasks. Here, we present an efficient and biologically plausible encoding method for a photonic spiking neural network (PSNN) based on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with an embedded saturable absorber (VCSELs-SA). In the proposed method, the date information is encoded into the strength of the injection rectangular pulse and then converted into spikes emitted by VCSELs-SA. We can obtain timing and threshold characteristics by adjusting the injection intensity which is beneficial to process the data in the following steps. The encoding method is verified by recognizing four spiking patterns and four expressions. Furthermore, we classify the Iris data set based on the encoding method with only four pre-neurons and two post-neurons. The encoding method and structure further explore the application of PSNN to pave the way for the hardware implementation.
Photonic-electronic spiking neuron with multi-modal and multi-wavelength excitatory and inhibitory operation for high-speed neuromorphic sensing and computing

Abstract:We report a multi-modal spiking neuron that allows optical and electronic input and control, and wavelength-multiplexing operation, for use in novel high-speed neuromorphic sensing and computing functionalities. The photonic-electronic neuron is built with a micro-scale, nanostructure resonant tunnelling diode (RTD) with photodetection (PD) capability. Leveraging the advantageous intrinsic properties of this RTD-PD system, namely highly nonlinear characteristics, photo-sensitivity, light-induced I-V curve shift, and the ability to deliver excitable responses under electrical and optical inputs, we successfully achieve flexible neuromorphic spike activation and inhibition regimes through photonic-electrical control. We also demonstrate the ability of this RTD-PD spiking sensing-processing neuron to operate under the simultaneous arrival of multiple wavelength-multiplexed optical signals, due to its large photodetection spectral window (covering the 1310 and 1550 nm telecom wavelength bands). Our results highlight the potential of RTD photonic-electronic neurons to reproduce multiple key excitatory and inhibitory spiking regimes, at high speed (ns-rate spiking responses, with faster sub-ns regimes theoretically predicted) and low energy (requiring only ~10 mV and ~150 microW, electrical and optical input amplitudes, respectively), similar in nature to those commonly found in the biological neurons of the visual system and the brain. This work offers a highly promising approach for the realisation of high-speed, energy-efficient photonic-electronic spiking neurons and spiking neural networks, enabling multi-modal and multi-wavelength operation for sensing and information processing tasks. This work therefore paves the way for innovative high-speed, photonic-electronic, and spike-based neuromorphic sensing and computing systems and artificial intelligence hardware.

Abstract:We propose a fully-connected photonic spiking neural network (SNN) consisting of excitable vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with an embedded saturable absorber (VCSELs-SA) to implement spike sequence learning by a supervised training. The photonic spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) is incorporated into a classical remote supervised method (ReSuMe) algorithm to implement supervised training of a photonic SNN for the first time. The computation model of the photonic SNN is derived based on the Yamada model. To optimize the learning process, we further propose a novel measure, the so-called spike sequence distance, to quantitatively evaluate the effects of controllable parameters. The numerical results show that, the photonic SNN successfully reproduces a desirable output spike sequence in response to a spatiotemporal input spike pattern by means of the iteration algorithm to update synaptic weights continuously. These results contribute one step forward toward the device-algorithm co-design and optimization of the all-VCSELs-based energy-efficient photonic SNN.

Abstract:We investigate experimentally and theoretically the communication of inhibited spiking dynamics between two interlinked photonic neurons based upon the vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). We show that the sub-nanosecond speed spiking dynamics fired by a Transmitter-VCSEL (T-VCSEL) can be inhibited under the arrival of suitable external stimuli and that the inhibited spiking behaviors are propagated into another Receiver-VCSEL (R-VCSEL). Both VCSELs exhibit analogous inhibited spiking dynamics in response to stimuli with different temporal durations and strength. In addition, a very good agreement is found between theoretical simulations and experiments. These results offer greater prospects for future networks of VCSEL-based photonic neurons for neuromorphic computing platforms.
