Abstract:As the global internet protocol (IP) traffic volume growth puts more pressure on network connectivity, bandwidth and latency requirements, crucial network elements such as switches need continuous improvement. To this end, we report a monolithically integrated, ultra-compact 8×8 optical space switch based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) gates, utilizing ultra-compact bends and denser SOA placement and demonstrating a strictly non-blocking broadcast and select (B&S) switch architecture on-chip. The switch circuitry comprises 80 SOAs, 112 multimode interference (MMI) splitters, and hundreds of waveguide bends and crossings integrated onto a 4.6×8 mm2 generic indium phosphide (InP) die with I/O access on the same side. In addition, the SOA waveguide geometry is specifically optimized to improve output saturation power by 2 dB and enable WDM operation. The physical layer characterization shows lossless operation on-chip due to the three SOAs in a path that provides enough gain to compensate for on-chip passive losses. The best-case OSNR is higher than 40 dB. We perform static data signal routing with four-channel wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) data signals at 25 Gb/s and 35 Gb/s, resulting in a worst-case 2 dB power penalty on receiver sensitivity. Additionally, we dynamically switch data signals at bit rates up to 35 Gb/s obtaining a power penalty similar to the static routing. The recorded rising and falling times are 4 and 6.4 ns, respectively, suggesting this chip is suitable for packet-scale fast switching applications.

Abstract:The enormous traffic growth sets a stringent requirement to upgrade short-reach optical links to 1.6 TbE capacity in an economically viable way. The power consumption and latency in these links should be as low as possible, especially for high-speed computing. This is possible to achieve using high baudrate on-off keying links thanks to a better noise tolerance and a relaxed requirement on linearity for electronics and photonics. In this regard, we demonstrate a 200 Gbaud on-off keying link without any optical amplification using an externally modulated laser with 3.3 dBm of modulated output power operating at 1541.25 nm wavelength. We achieve transmission over 200 meters of single-mode fiber with performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction threshold for each baudrate and all selection of modulation formats. We also show 108 Gbaud on-off keying link with superior performance without decision feedback equalizer up to 400 meters of single-mode fiber. In addition, we benchmark the short-reach optical link with 112 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation and 100 Gbaud six-level pulse amplitude modulation. For 108 Gbaud on-off keying and 112 Gbaud four-level pulse amplitude modulation, we can achieve an even lower bit error rate.

Abstract:A broadband and fast optical space switch is a crucial part of optical networks. A broadband, compact, and fast monolithically integrated InP/InGaAsP strictly nonblocking optical space switch based on semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA) gates has been designed, fabricated via the generic InP technology and characterized. The component losses, gain, and switching properties of the optical switch are analysed. The gain of three SOAs on a path was measured to be 31 dB on average and is enough to balance component losses whenever a reasonable number of waveguide crossings is encountered (< 25). An optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) and extinction ratio (ER) as large as 42.4 dB and 37.6 dB, respectively, are obtained in the best path. The performance can be further improved with optimized optical routing and design of lower loss crossings. These results pave the way to scale the switch to higher port counts by using this switch as a building block on a modular basis. Additionally, the use of ultra-compact bends and the number of components integrated on this single chip also shows to be promising for achieving compact optical switches in generic technology.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a wavelength-selective nonblocking 4 × 4 silicon optical router based on microring resonator for use in future integrated photonic interconnection networks. We successfully demonstrate 12 possible I/O routing paths and present 13 nonblocking operating states, including four broadcasting states, with worst-case extinction ratio and cross talk of 21.05 and -21.56 dB, respectively. Thermal tuning is employed to compensate the resonance shift of microring resonators caused by fabrication errors and adjust the resonance to match the International Telecommunication Unit grid with the channel spacing of 100 GHz.

Abstract:Large-scale silicon optical switches are essential to support the ever-increasing data traffic. Among the various switching architectures, the well-known switch-and-select (S&S) architecture has the advantages of low crosstalk and strict non-blocking. However, it suffers from high path-dependent losses as the waveguide crossings increase dramatically with the number of ports. In this paper, a large-scale 32 x 32 S&S optical switch on a multi-layer Si3N4-on-SOI platform is reported. The optical switch chip incorporates 1984 broadband thermo-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-based switch elements, 246 016 three-dimensional (3D) waveguide crossings, and 2048 interlayer couplers. Both approximate to 1-mdB-loss 3D waveguide crossings and approximate to 0.3-dB-loss interlayer couplers are realized, significantly reducing the overall insertion loss and footprint of the switch chip. The measured average fiber-to-fiber insertion loss is 12.88 dB at the 1580 nm wavelength. In addition, the crosstalk is less than -20.7 dB over the 110-nm wavelength range. The power consumption of the entire switch chip is only approximate to 0.98 W due to the air trenches and substrate undercut. High-fidelity optical transmission of a 50 Gb s(-1) quadrature phase-shift keying signal verifies the high-performance routing capability of this chip. These results indicate that the large-scale optical switch with broadband, low crosstalk, and high-power efficiency is promising for datacenter optical network applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate all-optical wavelength routing of 80 Gb/s data packets without using electronic control. The system consists of an optical wavelength converter and a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two coupled lasers, exhibiting single-mode operation, having a 35 dB contrast ratio between the states, and switching its state in about 2 us. The wavelength converter is optically controlled by the optical flip-flop. We show that the optical set and reset pulses can force the optical flip-flop to switch its continuous-wave output light between two specific wavelength positions. The output light feeds the wavelength converter, which, in turn, converts the data packet into the flip-flop's output wavelength, causing the data packet to be routed into a specific port.

Abstract:This paper discusses the architecture and provides performance studies of a silicon photonic chip-scale optical switch for scalable interconnect network in high performance computing systems. The proposed switch exploits optical wavelength parallelism and wavelength routing characteristics of an Arrayed Waveguide Grating Router (AWGR) to allow contention resolution in the wavelength domain. Simulation results from a cycle-accurate network simulator indicate that, even with only two transmitter/receiver pairs per node, the switch exhibits lower end-to-end latency and higher throughput at high (>90%) input loads compared with electronic switches. On the device integration level, we propose to integrate all the components (ring modulators, photodetectors and AWGR) on a CMOS-compatible silicon photonic platform to ensure a compact, energy efficient and cost-effective device. We successfully demonstrate proof-of-concept routing functions on an 8 × 8 prototype fabricated using foundry services provided by OpSIS-IME.

Abstract:Demonstration of all-optical packet switching at 160 Gb/s over a total of 110-km field installed optical fiber link is reported. The packet switch architecture is based solely on photonic circuits: an optical filter as label processor, an all-optical flip-flop as memory element and an ultrafast wavelength converter as router. Both flip-flop and wavelength converter uses semiconductor optical amplifiers which allows for photonic integration. The switch operates at low power levels and shows potential scalability. Error-free operation is shown without forward error correction technology.

Abstract:We present some progress in the field of optical signal processing that could be; utilized in all-optical packet switching. We demonstrate error-free 160 Gb/s optical wavelength conversion employing a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The gain recovery time of the semiconductor optical amplifier is greater than 90 ps. Assisted by an optical bandpass filter, an effective recovery time of 3 ps is achieved in the wavelength converter, which ensures 160 Gb/s operation. This optical wavelength converter can be controlled by a monolithically integrated optical flip-flop memory to route 80 Gb/s data-packets all-optically. The routing is realized without electronic control. The integrated optical flip-flop is based on two-coupled lasers, exhibits single-mode operation, has 35 dB contrast ratio between the states and switches state in about 2 ns. We demonstrate that the integrated flip-flop is able to control the optical wavelength converter up to 160 Gb/s. The system is capable of routing 80 Gb/s data packets with duration of 35 ns, separated by 15 ns of guard time.

Abstract:Abstract Due to the emergence of high-speed applications, demand for more bandwidth has increased exponentially in last a few years. To serve each user for his demand very fast processing and propagation of data is desired. These two requirements of high-speed communication can be fulfilled using optical fiber technology. In the same view in past many optical switch designs have emerged with their respective advantages and disadvantages. This paper proposes a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)-based switch incorporating arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) as wavelength router and fiber delay lines (FDL) to create optical buffer. Proposed switch design is compared with recent switch design and it is found that both in terms of BER and packet loss probability the performance of proposed design is much better in comparison to earlier designs.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate for the first time a hybrid optical packet and wavelength selective switching platform for high-performance data center networks. This architecture based on cascaded silicon microrings and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) supports wavelength reconfigurable packet and circuit switching, and is highly scalable, energy efficient and potentially integratable. By combining the wavelength-selective behavior of the microring and the broadband behavior of the SOA switch, we are able to achieve fast switching transitions, high extinction ratios, and low driving voltages, which are all requirements for future optical high-performance data center networks. Routing correctness and error-free operation (<10(-12)) are verified for both 10-Gb/s and 40-Gb/s packets and streaming data with format transparency. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America
